Rationale of the study Managing time is very important especially for those students who dont have and idea how to manage their time in school. Improper using of time it might cause or affects their personal life. Time management for the students is important skill because as students they need to different activities in school. Time consuming but relatively unimportant tasks can consume a lot of your day. Prioritizing tasks will ensure that you spend your time and energy on those that are truly important to you. Most students are poor about time management because they dont have an idea what to do regarding time priorities and responsibilities being a student. (Patagan, 2012). Time management is an essential skill used to manage for accomplishing tasks and goals. It also includes planning, spent time organizing, delegation, setting of goals, scheduling and prioritizing. Planning your day can help you accomplish more and feel more in control of your life. Write a to-do list, putting the most important tasks at the top. Keep a schedule of your daily activities to minimize conflicts and last minute rushes. Time management referred to just business or work activities, but eventually the term broadened to include personal activities. The University of Cebu-Maritime Education and Training Center (UC-METC) is known as one of the best universities in country producing competent and fully equipped graduates. The quality education encourages many students to enroll this school because of high quality of teaching and visible equipment in regards of their shop works that will enhance the student to

develop their performance and skills. These way of schooling training will prepare them in the actual field make them competent in any ways. This research is for BSMARE students of UC-METC. The purpose of the research in order the students know how to manage their time and improve their skills as well. With this studies, the research help us in a way of prioritizing time the validity of the research was made strong by the information and data they gathered and the references they referred to. THEORETICAL BACKGROUND Also known as the theory of hierarchy of needs, Abraham Harold Maslow, an American professor on psychology, effectively combined time management with our needs. He built a hypothetical pyramid where our physiological level needs (food, water, shelter),etc., were put at the base of the pyramid while self actualization was placed on the top of the pyramid. In between these two extreme levels, safety, human bonding and self-esteem were positioned. The 5 levels were examples different strata of human life. The theory doesnt specify the time period required to attain them, but it actually helps you to understand the importance of these elements in your life. Once you understand your needs, you differentiate between them and set a time period during which you can fulfill them. For example, the first motive behind earning money is to meet the physical demands of your body and then we become capable of taking care of our family and other concerns. A greater portion of our life and most of the time is dedicated to improving standards of living by satisfying ourselves in every possible way. Once we have plenty of resources to spare, we knock at the door of self actualization, that requires minimum time. You

can plan your road map in referring to the theory of hierarchy of needs with incorporation of effective time management strategy.(Maslows Thoery of Hierarchy,1940-50s). The pickle jar theory is very simple to understand and execute. The experiment is actually a time management model, that will aid you in prioritizing your work and in reaching the milestones of your life. To understand the concept, you can try it practically. Take a pickle jar and fill it with rocks. You observe that the spaces in between the rock stones could be filled up with pebbles. The jar becomes more compact after filling up with pebbles but still there are inconspicuous spaces that can compacted with sand. Now pour water over it and close the lid. The pickle jar is the replica of your life. The major responsibilities of your life or your goals are represented by the rocks that occupy most of the space. This infers that, you should dedicate more time to such goals. The chipped stones or the pebbles symbolize your hobbies that require comparatively lesser time than the important goals. Lastly, the daily chores of your life are the sand particles that placed perfectly between your goals and hobbies. The distractive force in your life that takes away your attention from the path of success is the water. Apart from teaching us the right way to manage time, this theory also makes us aware of the fact that distractions that lead to mismanagement should be avoided completely in order to follow the right track.(Pickle Jar Theory, 2002).

Literature Review Time management among of college students have been topics of interest for many years. Time perhaps you are one of those who plans to do so many things in a day that you never get to the most important ones. Perhaps you dont plan, lettering events take you where many, and on many days dont accomplish much at all. Learning to manage your time better will serve you very well is the future, both at work and in your personal life (Schemerhorn). According to Carter, Bishop, &Kravits (2007), time management allows you to complete work on a reasonable schedule and minimize stress. The purpose of time management is to accomplish goals and tasks by effectively constructing and managing ones schedule. In the book Keys to College Studying: Becoming an Active Thinker, Carter, Bishop, & Kravits (2007) state that goal achievement is directly linked to effective time management. If an individual fails to set and stick to a strict schedule that encompasses all their tasks, goals, and responsibilities in a realistic timeframe, it will then be difficult to accomplish everything in a given period. To help develop a plan when focusing on time management strategies, it is important. Time Management. Having a schedule for the study is an important study technique. Zimmerman (2000) agrees that the student should plan the study schedule. By planning the schedule, the student learns important lessons on time management. Boehler (2000) study show that the study schedules soon after school is very effective. The student is still in the school work mode and assignments are fresh in mind. Colombrado (2002) also noted that it is more effective to spread learning over a period of time instead of cramming all at once. Ideally, the plan

schedule would be at the same time, and the same length each day. Dunn (2002) suggests that there be a minimum time for planned study schedule regardless of the students activities. Britton and Tesser (1991) found that students who practiced certain time management techniques averaged a GPA nearly four tenths higher than students who did not. They also suggested two interesting facts. First, that strong time management skills will translate to success outside of the college environment. Second, that time management skills can be learned. (Williams & Cooper 2002). Time management is not optional; it is something that everyone has to acquire in order to work effectively, to achieve work-life balance and most importantly helping us to stay focus on what we did. Forsyth (2003), time management is about working actively to create efficiency and effectiveness in a way that makes achieving your target more likely. Good effective time management is a core skill, a differentiating factor which allows you to have an edge over other people. (Replicate from E/C Patagan, Edward R and etc.2012) Students should be highly motivated. They should come to the realization that is through studying that they will achieve their goals. To determine the causes that affects the time management issues a student should take a close look at what portions of his or her tasks are not being completed. To do this the student should keep a written list of items that have not been accomplished; this should be done for at least one week. Within the one-week timeframe the student should be able to see the areas in which he or she is lacking in the time management area. The next step that would be necessary would be to find helpful. Household Chores. Most students are able to concentrate for a very short period of time. It is not common for the students to be able to focus for just 80 to 110 seconds. However with a little

organization and better time management skills, you can generate more free time for your family and reduce the stress in your personal life. Organization is the key to becoming a better manager of your time. Time management is merely a series of choices - a skill that enables you to differentiate between what you need to do and what you prefer to do (Mancini, 2003 ). One of the first steps to getting organized is to create a list of all the tasks or assignments that a person has for that day or week. Some people may find it easier to create a list for the work environment and then a list for household tasks. Large assignments on the list that seem overwhelming should be broken down into smaller parts to avoid being discouraged (Holmstrom, 1998). In addition to creating a checklist, one key belief is to use some type of prioritizing for your tasks or assignments. One useful method is to write down your assignments and then allocate each of them a priority code with the most critical being at the top of your list. This is a very important step because it will help you focus on your assignments and allow you to accomplish. Rest and Recreation. A students activity can create environments conductive to or detrimental to learning. The attitude of delaying essential task or assignments for later time and instead doing unnecessary task or assignments is known as Procrastination. There is great saying by Norman Vincent Peale If you put off everything till you're sure of it, you'll never get anything done. This study examined (1) Time management by gender and year in school (class status) of college students. We expected that would be differences across year in school in time management in regards in their time priorities, and acquired coping capabilities of each class

7 (e.g., freshmen leaving home and adjusting to group living, sophomores facing major field curricular decision, and seniors facing job research or postgraduate training decisions), and also time management of college students. The study used to examine which sources of time management cause the highest levels of time priorities among college students. In developing a time management strategy is to overcome poor time management skills and to understand what time management. Effective time management will be rewarding as the student can achieve his or her goals and reduce the stress level in his or her daily life. To find a solution the student must first find the causes of the problem, find tools that can address the issue, and then apply the tools in an effective manner. It is in this premise that the researchers want to propose this study. The researcher, as BSMARE wants to ascertain the skills in time management of selected BSMARE student of University of Cebu-Maritime Education and Training Center (UC-METC). With this, the researchers may be able to suggest ways on how to manage time properly basis on their learning they got from their research and distinguish the correlation of that certain problem and give the effect of proper time management.
