Introduction to "Resume Expanded"Tonight, I wanted to take a broader look at my professional resume, found here or here, and tryto add in a few more details that normally don’t fit within the format.

I’d like to call it “My Resume, Unabridged version.”

Employment History It really all started back in 1996 when I was conducting a workshop on MS Excel inside one of CentralMichigan University’s computer labs. When one of the students who attended told me that his older brother had gotten a job creating websites for a movie studio, I pretty impressed. I had only startedto dabble with HTML and creating a personal page, but even then it sounded like a lot of fun to buildwebsites for a living. Later on, I continued to work on my personal website during my down time at the Journalismdepartment’s MAC lab. The site was pretty simple with a couple of pages, and text links for navigation. Ipieced together a quick logo and called the site “Jon’s World.” After I graduated from CMU in 1997, I applied for a position with HomeTown Online. I shared printedcopies of my personal website as a part of my portfolio, and would end up working there as a full timewebpage designer and computer support technician.

Besides those main responsibilities, some of my notable accomplishments included creating a formwhich helped us when we met with clients to learn what they were looking for in a website, the designand production of a 8-paged booklet which advertised HomeTown Online’s services and was passedout during one of the local home shows, I attended editorial meetings and offered suggestions on waysin which the online version of the newspaper could complement the news stories in the printed edition, and I improved the newspapers’ online presence with a redesigned site and a streamlined process for uploading news content. I also began writing a computer column for the Livingston County Press in 1999, shortly beforeHomeTown Online was dissolved. After a job search and a brief stint at the Cromaine Library as a part-time computer technician, I beganworking for the Michigan State Medical Society in Okemos as a Website Coordinator. My duties included

maintaining the website, compiling and sending out weekly membership e-newsletters, converting anduploading the organization’s newsletter and magazines onto the site, and the development of newsections. Among my highlights, I implemented a redesign of their website which introduced a moreengaging homepage, and I contributed to the organization’s Technology Plan. Around 2001, I started working for Special Olympics Michigan as a Public Relations Assistant andWeb Designer. This position brought many challenges as I balanced the work of a web developer, which included web maintenance and page creation, with work in public relations. I was responsible for redesigning the website, coordinated two yearly banquets, managed the Celebrity Autographs during thestate games, and sent out a regular e-newsletter which I initiated. In 2003, I joined Dow Chemical’s Video Conference Help Desk. My main two duties at the helpdesk wasto connect video conference rooms prior to meetings, and to answer tech support questions over the

phone. I also maintained the team’s knowledgebase. I learned a lot during this job about system analysis, problem solving, audio-video hardware, and teamwork. I later transferred to Dow Chemical’s EmployeeTraining Center where I maintained the equipment in half a dozen conference rooms, responded toquestions or trouble calls during meetings, and assisted with A/V projects. Finally, I joined the staff at EduGuide in 2007 as their Community Support Coordinator, and currentlywork there as the Web Services Coordinator. During the four years that I’ve worked for EduGuide, I’vebeen responsible for the creation and maintenance of several marketing landing pages, the monitoringof web metrics, production of numerous video tutorials and a series of live teleconference calls, user testing, quality assurance, bug tracking and resolution, and user documentation. I’ve also contributed to

Skills and AbilitiesIf I said that I could jump over tall buildings, you probably wouldn’t believe me.

Some things that I definitely can do is contribute to a business or organization that want toengage with their audience via the Internet. If I already know how to do something I’ll hitthe ground running and produce results, but if its new I will size things up and offer somesuggestions.

One thing that I’ve repeatedly been able to do is leverage the experience I’ve gained fromprevious jobs. At the Michigan State Medical Society, I continued to use the skills I learned incollege to give their website a “newsy” look and feel, and hopefully engage their audience withricher content. At Special Olympics Michigan, I used new software and techniques to improvetheir website’s appearance. And, while I’ve worked at EduGuide I’ve been able to apply all of the skills I’ve gained towards user interface design, communication, and media production.

And, along the way I’ve also been watching trends in social media, podcasting, and electronicpublishing.

QualificationsI have a broad knowledge of computer hardware, web design, social media, quality assurancetesting, media production and project management which I’m always excited to apply towards a

 job or project.

I’m also able to analyze a system, break it down, and then describe in basic terms. Thishas come in handy in the past when I’ve worked as a support technician or written user documentation.

Recently, I have played a critical role as a project and product manager, quality assurance lead,as well as bug verification.

ObjectivesMy objective in life is, ultimately, to contribute my talents to a cause that is bigger than me. Ialso crave the chance to be innovative, and maybe redefine myself as I learn or discover newthings.Ideally, I’d like to work somewhere that allows me to take advantage of my writing, problemsolving, and user interface development skills, but I’m always looking for new opportunities for growth.

AddressBoth my wife and I come from smaller towns, so it wasn’t long after we moved to Shepherd,Michigan that we decided that we were going to stay here for a very long time. Eight years later,we have truly put down roots here in Central Michigan.

During the time that we’ve lived here, I’ve made new friends, guided my kids through their first days of school (as well as a first day of middle school), volunteered during the village’sSesquicentennial celebration, and currently serve on the zoning board.
