Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County has ex-pressed appreciation for the support of the Cathedral par-ish during the collection that was held in May of this year. $2,310.00 was contributed. Funds will support housing, employment, school readiness, after-school pro-grams, veteran’s programs, ESL, mental health and ser-vices for older adults. Thank you. Support Group for Families of Incarcerated Persons The Diocese of San Jose, through the Office of Restorative Justice, has formed a support group for family members of incarcerated persons. This group meets at 7:00pm on the third Tues-day of each month at the Women’s Gathering Place (First Presbyterian Church) 49 North 4th Street, San Jose 95112. The purpose of this group is to pro-vide support, encouragement, and prayer during this difficult time.

Es importante leer el Evangelio de hoy y del próximo domingo como dos partes de un relato sin-gular. Estas lecturas marcan un momento decisivo en el Evange-lio de Mateo. Esta semana escu-

chamos a Jesús nombrar a Simón Pedro, como la roca sobre la cual edificará su Iglesia. La próxi-ma semana, el mismo Simón Pedro es nombrado “Satanás” por Jesús cuando reacciona negativa-mente a la predicación de Jesús sobre su pasión y muerte. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús pregunta a sus discípulos lo que la gente dice acerca de su identidad. Los discípulos indican que la mayoría cree que Jesús es profeta de Israel. Entonces Jesús les pregunta a sus discípulos lo que creen que él es. Simón Pedro contesta, identificando a Jesús como el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios. Jesús elo-gia a Simón Pedro por su profesión de fe, indi-cando que su ingenio ha provenido de Dios. De-bido a la contestación de Simón, Jesús lo llama la “roca” sobre la cual Jesús edificará la Iglesia. Esta es una jugada de palabra porque la Palabra “Pedro” en griego significa “roca.” Pedro es da-do autoridad especial por Jesús, una llave simbó-lica al Reino del Cielo. Pedro tendrá un papel importante para la comunidad primitiva Cristiana como portavoz y líder. En el Evangelio de hoy, el reconocimiento de la identidad de Jesús proviene de una revelación por Dios. Esto va en contraste con la severa rega-ñada que Jesús le dará a Pedro el próximo do-mingo. Cuando Pedro rechaza la predicación de Jesús de su pasión y muerte, es que Pedro ya no piensa como Dios sino como ser humano. El uso del término iglesia en el Evangelio de hoy es una de solamente tres en el Evangelio de Ma-teo. A Pedro en este Evangelio se le da mérito por ser el cimiento de la Iglesia, un privilegio concedido a él debido a su reconocimiento de la identidad de Jesús. La Iglesia sigue siendo arrai-gada en la fe de que Jesús es el Señor.

S aint of the Week Saint Monica 331-387 Although she was a Christian, her parents gave her in marriage to a pagan, Patricius, who lived in her

hometown of Tagaste in North Africa. Patricius had a vio-lent temper and was unrestrained. Monica also had to bear with a cantankerous mother-in-law who lived in her home. Monica’s prayers and example finally won her husband and mother-in-law to Christianity. Her husband died in 371, one year after his baptism. Monica had at least three children who survived infancy. The oldest, Augustine, is the most famous. At the time of his father’s death, Augus-tine was 17 and a rhetoric student in Carthage. Monica was distressed to learn that her son had accepted the Manichean heresy that “all flesh is evil,” and was living an immoral life. For awhile she refused to let him eat or sleep in her house. Then one night she had a vision that assured her that Augustine would return to the faith. From that time on, she stayed close to her son, praying and fasting for him. In fact she often stayed much closer than Augustine wanted. When he was 29, Augustine he told his mother one night that he was going to the dock to say goodbye to a friend. Instead he set sail for Rome. Monica was heart- broken when she learned of Augustine’s trick, but she still followed him. She arrived in Rome only to find that he had left for Milan. Although travel was difficult, Monica pursued him to Milan. In Milan, Augustine came under the influence of the bishop, Saint Ambrose, who also became Monica’s spiritual director. She accepted his ad-vice in everything and had the humility to give up some practices that had become second nature to her. Monica became a leader of the devout women in Milan as she had been in Tagaste. She supported her son during his years of instruction. At Easter 387, Saint Ambrose baptized Augus-tine and several of his friends. Soon after, his party left for Africa. Monica knew her life was near the end. She told Augustine, “Son, nothing in this world now affords me de-light. I do not know what there is now left for me to do or why I am still here, all my hopes in this world being now fulfilled.” She became ill shortly after and suffered for nine days before her death. Almost all we know about St. Mon-ica is in the writings of Saint Augustine, especially his Confessions.

A pesar de ser Cristiana, sus padres la dieron en matrimonio a un pagano, Patricio, que vivía en sus mis-mo pueblo de Tagaste en el norte de África. Patricio era de carácter violento y sin límites. La suegra necia también vivía con ellos. Las oraciones y el ejemplo de Mónica finalmente conquistaron al marido y a la suegra al Cristia-nismo. A pesar de las dificultadas, Mónica lo siguió. En Milano, Agustín cayó bajo la influencia de San Ambrosio que llegó a ser el consejero espiritual de Mónica. Aceptó sus consejos y sacrificó algunas prácticas que ella acostum-braba. Mónica encabezó un grupo de mujeres devotas y apoyó a sus hijo durante los años de su instrucción.
