usually easy to tell the two (9) . Almost all kinds of plants stay in one place, but nearly

all species of animals move about under their own power. Most plants make their own food

from air, sunlight, and water. Animals cannot make their own food. The basic units of all life,

called cells, are also different in plants and animals. Most plants have thick walls that (10)

a material called cellulose. Animal cells do not have this material.

Passage 5:GARBAGE

(1)________ of the garbage we produce every day is a major problem in cities around the

world. In the United States, over 160 million tons of garbage are produced every year. Ten per

cent is recycled, ten per cent is burned, and the rest is put in landfills. But finding (2)________

for new landfills is becoming more difficult.

A city that has solved this problem in an unusual way is Machida, in Tokyo, Japan. They have

developed a totally new (3)________ to garbage disposal. The (4)________ to the operation is

public cooperation. Families must divide their garbage into six categories:

1. Garbage that can be easily burned (that is, combustible garbage), such as kitchen and garden

trash.

2. Noncombustible garbage, such as small electrical appliances, plastic tools and plastic toys.

3. Products that are poisonous or that (5)________ pollution, such as batteries and fluorescent

lights.

4. Bottles and glass containers that can be recycled.

5. Metal containers that can be recycled.

6. Large item, such as furniture and bicycles.

The items in categories 1 to 5 are collected (6)________ different days. (Large items are

collected upon request). Then the garbage is taken to a center that looks like a clean new office

building or hospital. Inside the center, special equipment is used to sort and (7)________ the

garbage. Almost everything can be reused: garden or kitchen trash becomes fertilizer;

combustible garbage is burned to (8)________ electricity; metal containers and bottles are

recycled; and old furniture, clothing, and other useful items are cleaned, repaired, and resold

cheaply or given away. The work provides (9)________ for handicapped persons and gives

them a (10)________ to learn new skills.

Nowadays, officials from cities around the world visit Machida to see whether they can use

some of these ideas and techniques to solve their own garbage disposal problems.

Passage 1: ‘A WHALE’ OIL SKIMMER ARRIVES FOR BP OIL SPILL CLEAN-UP

- Oil cleanup workers are testing a new and very large ship built to clean the oil polluted

waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Crews began testing the Taiwanese ship named "A Whale" on

Friday. Test results are expected on Monday. The huge ship takes in seawater through 12

openings. Then it separates the oil from the water and sends the clean seawater back into the

Gulf. The manufacturers of "A Whale" say it can clean up to 80,000,000 liters of oily water a

day.

1. The ship named “A Whale” holds Taiwanese nationality.

2. The ship has been approved and in official operation in the Gulf of Mexico.

3. According to its manufacturer, the ship can separate the oil from the water, and the oil

will be processed into lubricants.

4. On average, the ship can clean up to 3.3 million liters per hour.

Passage 2:FLOODS THREATEN THE TAJ MAHAL

- Floodwaters in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state are threatening the TajMahal, one of

the Seven Wonders of the World. Officials say the monument, which stands on the banks of the

YamunaRiver, is dangerously close to being impacted by the floodwaters. The water level in

the Yamuna crossed the danger mark following heavy rains. At least 15 districts in Uttar

Pradesh state have been flood-affected. India's monsoon, which last year delivered the weakest

rainfall in 37 years, is causing extensive flooding in several parts of northern Indian states over

the last several weeks.

1. The TajMahal and 14 districts in Uttar Pradesh are facing the flood water.

2. The water level in the Yamuna crossed the danger mark following heavy rains.

3. Last year’s monsoon in India delivered the weakest rainfall in 37 years.

Passage 3:HEALTH EFFECT OF SMOKING

smoking, depend on it, and can hardly get rid of it. If they do not smoke for hours, they will feel

a craving for a cigarette. They often chain-smoke that means they light one cigarette after

another. Smoking is often considered anti-social because many people do not like the smell of

cigarettes or the sight of the smoker's stained fingers and of ash-trays full of cigarette-ends.

Above all, smoking is harmful to health. In many countries, they forbid to advertise cigarettes

and a warning is printed every packet of cigarette that is “Smoking is bad for your health”.

country toward energy independence. The new president told federal environmental officials to

study requests made by at least twelve states. The states want increased regulations for

pollution released by automobiles. In the past, the Bush administration had blocked a request

from California to further limit emissions. Mr. Obama also told the Transportation Department

Passage 5:AN OIL SENTENCE FOR BIRDS.

An oil soaked Brown Pelican off QueenBessIsland in Louisiana. As the oil spill hits day

47, the crisis is increasingly taking a toll on wildlife. On Friday the government reported that

527 dead birds were collected dead over the past 45-days along the GulfCoast, although not all

of those birds showed signs of oil.

Of particular concern, is the brown pelican, which was only removed from the endangered

species list last year.QueenBessIsland is one of three sites in Louisiana where the brown pelican

had been reintroduced.

BP's latest effort to stem the flow, has shown signs of improvement, but the collection rate is

still only about one-third of one day's flow from well, which has been estimated by the

government at about 19,000 barrels per day. BP does not expect to fully halt the oil flow until

August, when two relief wells are due to be completed.

Now the oil slick unleashed after a Deepwater Horizon rig exploded on April 20, killing 11

workers is landing in places like BessIsland, where some fear what was once a kind of

sanctuary for wild life will turn into a death trap.

1. 527 birds were found dead because of their oil-soaked feathers.

2. The brown pelican have been reintroduced throughout Louisiana.

3. BP’s oil collection rate is slow in comparison to the amount of oil per one day's flow from well.

4. It is expected that the oil flow will have been stopped by September.
