ESPECIAL PUBLICIDAD ADVERTISING SPECIAL EDITION
G7 was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, almost 13 years ago. From the beginning, the magazine established itself as a space of diffusion for diferent
cultural expressions in a way unknown to the local market: with contents of high quality. Among the stories that we wanted to tell, of course, were many
related to advertising. Therefore, shortly after having printed the first magazine, we decided to double the bet and do, every year, a special edition de-
dicated to that universe. For this move to be complete, we found it relevant to translate it into English and distribute it at the Cannes Lions Advertising
Festival. Thus, in the last decade many things may have changed, in the advertising world and the world in general, but in one way or another G7 was
always there – here - to celebrate creativity.
Fortunately, other things have not changed these years: both Argentine agencies and production companies continue giving us reasons to celebrate. We
could talk about the appointment of Pablo del Campo as Worldwide Creative Director of Saatchi & Saatchi or recognitions that our compatriots harvested
in recent months, but that's what the pages that follow are for. You will also find, of course, several lines dedicated to the FIFA World Cup. The matter is not
only worth it because of the fact that Lionel Messi is Argentine, but also because it is an event that, in much of the world, far exceeds sports.
We hope you will enjoy it.

Mucha.

“Estar ahí no

We have a lot. The truth is that we have never been in a network that is so

We have to like it and it has to work for the brand. There´s not much more to

NUEVOS DESAFÍOS / NEW CHALLENGESALMOST A YEAR AGO, WPP GROUP ANNOUNCED THE CREATION OF GLOBAL GEOMETRY, A NEW ACTIVATION AGENCY. IN CHARGE OF OPERATIONS IN LATIN AMERICA, IS GERMÁN YUNES, CEO OF OGILVY & MATHER LATINA SOUTH. "I'M MORE THAN SATISFIED WITH OUR POSITION IN THE REGION", HE STATES.
belcorp, bat, unilever o Kfc.
tENIENDo EN cuENta El EscENarIo argENtINo, ¿quÉ buscaN
es un must. Para nosotros, esto es clave. Hoy no sólo cambió la publicidad;
IN busINEss tErms, what Is your assEssmENt of thE last
moNths IN thE rEgIoN?
The business is in a good time. But conditions are not equal in Colombia,
Chile or Argentina, to name three different cases. We are so entrenched
with our global customers and have excellent links with local and regio-
nal clients, whereby the business averages good stability and growth ex-
pectations for 2014. Nonetheless, there are scenarios such as Argentina,
where projections for business face instability, which makes it difficult to
forecasts. Even so, in general terms, I can make a positive and optimistic
balance about the business of the advertising industry in the region.
CASI UN AÑO ATRÁS, EL GRUPO WPP ANUNCIÓ LA CREACIÓN DE GEOMETRY GLOBAL, UNA NUEVA AGENCIA DE ACTIVACIONES. A CARGO DE LA OPERACIÓN EN LATINOAMÉRICA, ESTÁ GERMÁN YUNES, CEO DE OGILVY & MATHER LATINA SOUTH. “ESTOY MÁS QUE SATISFECHO CON NUESTRO POSICIONAMIENTO EN LA RE-GIÓN”, DICE.
In July 2013, the cEo of ogilvy & mather latina south was also appointed
cEo of geometry global latin america, the new group´s project of wpp
after the merger of ogilvyaction and g2. Nowadays , the new company
has 11 active branches (in argentina, brazil, chile, costa rica, colombia,
Ecuador, mexico, peru, puerto rico, Dominican republic and venezuela),
seven of which were opened from scratch in the last six months.
"that was one of the main goals of my administration," said yunes.
"geometry global was born tobe the biggest and strongest activations
network globally. and in the region we are achieving that in less than a
year. I was able to build a large regional team with top talented people in
creative, shopper, business Intelligence, planning, Data and Innovation,
and in addition, it strengthenedthe business with brands such as coca
cola, belcorp, bat, unilever or Kfc. that serves to demonstrate the ro-
bustness with which geometry is positioning."
gIvEN thE argENtINE scENarIo, what arE braNDs looKINg for
at a commuNIcatIoNal lEvEl thEsE Days?
Brands are always looking for their agencies to accompany them, advi-
se and manage their communication needs. Maybe today there is grea-
ter need for differentiation in the market, which makes the idea to put the
focus on innovation as a must. For us, this is a key factor. Today not only
advertising changed; consumer trends too. Therefore, we must anticipate
the needs of consumers and between agency and client, we must lead the
way of defining trend based on the communication objectives of each client
with their brand, together. It's a different dynamic. There are also new lan-
guages, such as digital, that while it had been among us for several years
now, it has strengthened in the last few years. Therefore, it is important to
join hand in hand to brands, to be at the level of the business projections
and be true communication consultants. That makes us partners with our
clients, that makes the difference.

Vital is a brand for infant nutrition that wanted to show the importance
of the mother in the first months of a baby’s life. Based on this idea, a
hypothesis emerged: if the beating of a mother’s heart comforts her new-
born baby, it can have the same effect on a larger child. We did a docu-
mentary affirming this hypothesis and generating a machine with which
mothers could record their heart beats and give them as a present to their
children. It was a way to enable them to return to something relevant to
them, speaking to them in their own codes. On the other hand, we wan-
ted this intimate encounter between the heartbeat of the mother and their
son/daughter to happen through a mobile app. The objective was to unite
two worlds as distant from each other as apps and emotions. So we crea-
ted an "emotional" application among all the functional apps. The result
was very good at all levels: acceptance, use, interaction, viralization ... The
activity was intended to live on social platforms and on the street, but had
such an incredible impact that the customer wanted to do an adaptation
for the television.
"BRANDS KNOW OUR EXPERTISE, SO IF THEY COME TO US, IT IS BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY NEED TO GET UNCOMFORTABLE" SAYS NICOLÁS PIMENTEL, CO-FOUNDER OF THE INNOVATION AGENCY +CASTRO. CUSTOMERS LIKE GOOGLE, DISNEY OR MONDELEZ ALREADY TRIED IT AND, SO FAR, IT DID NOT TURN OUT BAD AT ALL FOR THEM.
+castro, the innovation agency, led by Nicolás pimentel and pedro saleh,
has turned four years since it was created. During all this time, his team
focused on breaking molds again and again, applying an infallible for-
mula in this time of change: creativity, new technologies and production.
customers like mondelez latam, google, Disney latam, Danone, loJack,
quilmes or absolut vodka already tested them.
at this level, brands that get in contact with them already know what to
expect. "companies that call us have an interest in doing something di-
fferent from the rest," says pimentel, co-founder and +castro`s director
of innovation. "brands know our expertise, so if they come to us, it is be-
cause they know they need to get uncomfortable. In a context such as the
actual one, where consumers are moving faster and faster, companies
feel that in order to surprise and captivate them, they need to connect
with them from another angle, changing the way of doing things. today,
more than briefs, we receive challenges."
This work achieved global outreach and incentivized Google to create a
new service for agencies in Latin America. In cooperation with the R&D de-
partment of LoJack we created the LoLab and began to build a pipeline of
products for 2015 (we already launched the first product together in August
2013). Furthermore, for the presentation of Clights new juice flavours, we
gave consumers the chance to design a line of rings and generate the first
line of "drinkable accessories", made 100% of Clight juice. Finally, we ca-
rried out the Absolut Transform Today, an innovation within the art world.
What we did was to build a chain of transformation showing how eight artists
from multiple disciplines (photographer, visual artists, writers, fashion de-
signers, etc.) could change things, starting from a bottle and in just 24 hours.
whEN DEvElopINg a Job for a clIENt, what Do you wEIgh morE,
INstINct or rEsEarch?
A very important part of our job is to inform ourselves and investigate stea-
dily. Read, get together with new people, learn from interesting people who
generally have nothing to do with our profession. Curiosity is really key to
innovation. And of course, this whole research process turns itself into a tool
for intuition to do its own thing. They are two factors that constantly coexist
and complement each other.
you bEgaN thE yEar by aDDINg "rulo " gowlaND to thE agENcy.
what DoEs hE aDD to thE tEam?
Rulo is a great addition from every point of view. Because of his profile, he
was a Castro even before Castro itself existed. Besides being a great person,
he is a sort of mashup between the world of Pedro (production and techno-
logy development) and mine (creativity and strategy). Rulo was incorporated
as general director to promote the culture of innovation across the company,
helping us to climb up the business ladder even higher and take the quality
of projects to another level.
what arE your plaNs for thE comINg moNths?
Luckily, the second half of 2014 is full of action. We are finishing up produ-
cing and developing an activity for Quilmes that will cause a great impact.
It took months and months of research into new technologies and develop-
ments. We will also be working with Disney LATAM, a very innovative brand,
in a super secret project that apart from being intense, it will fills us both
with new learning. Furthermore, the incubator Fly Garage by Mondelez will
turn three this year, transforming the internal culture of the company. This
second semester will be no exception. We already have several confirma-
tions from cities all around the world. The truth is that we expect a very
nutritious second half of the year that will surely come up as news in this
magazine in the coming months.
whIch rEsults Do braNDs obtaIN through such campaIgNs?
In addition to communicating a message, we look for innovation to create
a story in itself, adding another layer of storytelling. In addition to telling
the story of "what", it is telling the story of "how". We know that when there
is striking innovation in the center of the scene, it is echoed in the media.
This allows the brand to reach a public they never had contact with before.

historia. Yo amo a Maradona.

how DID your customEr basE EvolvE IN rEcENt tImEs?
PUIGGARI: Fortunately we are having new assignments, such as the digital
business Bubba, and we added Halls and Zurich to our client portfolio. We
were able to develop projects for launching products for brands such as
Sony. And we continue to grow in different areas of our customers thanks
to the collaborative work of the group operations, such as Momentum
and Shopper. The secret when talking to customers is to provide solu-
tions that focus on their growth and in giving them the most creative so-
lution possible.
how woulD you DEfINE thE prEsENt sItuatIoN of thE agENcy?
D' EMILIO: Mccann Buenos Aires remains being a key support for the net-
work in Latin America and in the world. In the last year we took part in ma-
jor projects for the global brands of the agency. In particular, I had to face
a renewal in the region, with the focus set on creativity, which is showing
results in the performance of the festivals. In that sense, Buenos Aires has
a strong presence in the network. In the local context, the agency is not ex-
cluded from the scenario that the industry is going through, but we would
like to have more exposure. Hopefully we keep growing with the local cus-
tomers in order to continue providing the alternative that we are achieving.
whIch placE occupIEs thE DIgItal arEa wIthIN thE agENcy?
PUIGGARI: Today the digital area occupies the whole agency. We like to talk
more about the digitization of people in general than about a specific area.
And in that context the agency is going through a process of transformation
that is great.
WITH SANTIAGO PUIGGARI AND CHAVO D' EMILIO LEADING, THIS AGENCY LIVES ITS PRESENT SITUATION WITH ENTHUSIASM . "NOWADAYS LATIN AMERICA IS CONSIDERED FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE, CREATIVITY LEADS THE WAY AND WHAT WE ADVERTI-SERS DO HAS HUGE EXPOSURE" SAYS CHAVO D' EMILIO, MCCANN´S EXECUTIVE CREATIVE DIRECTOR.
"currently there is a great need to transcend, and having this scena-
rio in mind, social viralization remains being the big carrot for any
brand," says chavo D' Emilio, executive creative director of mccann
buenos aires. "and it´s needless to say that everything goes hand in
hand with measurable and favorable results."
In pursue of this objective, the agency has been working closely,
day after day, alongside their clients, which include brands such as
mastercard, l' oréal, Nestlé, coca cola and chevrolet. "personally, I
love what we did for Zona Jobs," says santiago puiggari, president of
mccann buenos aires. "that work and the launch of the aquatic sony
headphones are the works that stood out in the last few months."
how Do you mEasurE thE succEss of aN IDEa?
D' EMILIO: It depends. We continue to trust in the feeling we get when first
confront with an idea. This intuition, this criterion, which happens at an
emotional level, is a barometer that cannot and should not be missed. Then
there are measurement variables. Such as festivals, popular culture, views,
likes, the price of shares on the stock market. Each one focuses on its own
game. All of them respect each other.
what sEDucEs you about aDvErtIsINg aftEr all thIs tImE?
D' EMILIO: The present of the world. To me it seems a moment with so many
opportunities, we have to be aware of the role we occupy in it, which gives
me a strong push to look with open eyes at an industry that reinvents itself
by an almost superior force, against the technological progress and the sig-
ns of the times. Today Latin America is considered from a different perspec-
tive, creativity leads the way and what we do has huge exposure, never seen
before. The world is really crazy. And advertising continues to be the key to
assist in the task of redefining the place of brands and their duties towards
society. What can be better than being immersed in this advertising world in
order to try to change things!
messi is perhaps the best football player in history. who is, for
you, the messi of the advertising industry?
D' EMILIO: I do not know, I do not think that Messi is the best football player
in history. I love Maradona. For me there has never been and will not be
anyone like Diego. It must be because I do not play games on PlayStation or
maybe, because of the fact that I do not believe a lot in marketing gimmicks.

sony, cadbury, bgh y andes.

Argentine creativity is recognized worldwide. This is the result of hard
work, which took our national industry many years. That effort was accom-

people. This link between advertising and consumers goes far beyond the
cyclical crisis the country may live. It is what makes our creativity so alive

PABLO DEL CAMPO, ONE OF THE MOST AWARDED PUBLICITY AGENT OF ARGENTINA, WAS JUST APPOINTED GLOBAL CREATIVE DIREC-TOR OF THE SAATCHI & SAATCHI NETWORK. ACCORDING TO HIM, THE KEY TO SUCCESS IN ADVERTISING LAYS IN THE CONSISTENCY OF IDEAS. "IN ARGENTINA, THE LINK BETWEEN ADVERTISING AND CONSUMERS GOES FAR BEYOND THE CYCLICAL CRISIS", HE SAYS.

Because of its consistency over time. Nothing is stronger than consistency.
From the time of Hugo Casares or David Ratto, until today. Agencies fell
in love with Argentina recognizing the fertile land and the Argentineans
started to ask for advertising that thrills and entertains them as much as

Latin America in general has grown. A little bit because of the contagion

they work for, adding value to the advertising industry.

“me encanta”, insiste.

Nowadays, given the current situation of the country, there are all advan-

important issues are the partnerships we have built in recent times, which
allow us to offer various specialized and quality services, maintaining our
structure. The most important partnership is the one we have with Grupo
Vía, the largest media conglomerate of indoor advertising in the country,
with whom we have established a strategic link to expand and enhance
the services that both companies offer. This relationship allows us to have
the support, experience and structure of Grupo Vía, uniting resources and
enhancing our internal graphical, digital and audiovisual production de-

so.

GRAU: Through networks, brands have many contact points with people,
and in each of them, you can implement a different strategy. While the
brand and the tone will be the same throughout the campaign, the strate-
gy has to change. It is the famous crossmedia. In that sense, the entry of
Juan Korman is fundamental. Today you have to be very attentive to what
happens in social networks, to the reactions. The behavior of the brands
on the web is much more interactive that in a television ad, which does not
change over time. The networks demand a dynamic and immediate res-
ponse system, so it is important to have someone who pays attention to it.
RODRÍGUEZ COHEN: Nevertheless, it is the zone of the uncontrollable: it
is unpredictable to say what could happen there. It can even convey you to
change the focus of a campaign. For this reason we need to have someone
at the agency who understands this world and has the ability to respond
to it.

RODRÍGUEZ COHEN: This activity in particular was for the launch of the
Smart account on Twitter, so it was 100% digital. After that, Baptism came
out, a collaboration between Nike and Boca where players renewed their
commitment to the shirt. The implementation of the campaign was based
purely on this digital concept: "Burrito" Martinez erased all his followers
on Twitter and proposed winning them all back through his actions on the
court. It was a descent of a traditional campaign into social networks, but
we did not put a link on the TV commercial to raise likes, we rather sear-
ched for a proper idea on Twitter.
GRAU: The television can tell one story and social media can tell another,
although there is a bigger picture that unites them. It is good to consider
THE AGENCY OF CARLOS PÉREZ AND DANIEL MELERO KEEPS GROWING IN ALL SENSES: INCREASES ITS TEAM, RECEIVES AWARDS AND REFORMULATES ITS STRUCTURE IN ORDEN TO KEEP UP WITH THE PRESENT. HOWEVER, THE CHIEF CREATIVE DIRECTORS RAMIRO RO-DRÍGUEZ COHEN AND RODRIGO GRAU POINT OUT THAT THE ESSENCE OF THE ADVERTISING INDUSTRY REMAINS THE SAME. "IT ALL COMES DOWN TO HAVING A MOBILIZING IDEA" THEY SAY.
at this level of circumstances, there is no need to talk about the speed of things. Nowadays everybody knows that in a matter of days, hours,
minutes, seconds, everything can change. advertising, of course, lives at the heart of it, running on a winding, endless highway at full speed.
along the way, it should tramp new paths, taking shortcuts and routes that no one has ever transited before. given this scenario, agencies are
forced to reinvent themselves every day.
that is what bbDo argentina is about to do, the agency led by carlos pérez and Daniel melero, with ramiro rodríguez cohen and rodrigo grau
as chief creative directors. until now, it is not turning out bad at all. without going any further, in recent months, the company won the grand
prix of the Internet advertising bureau (Iab) for the fifth consecutive year, received a lápiz de platino (platinum pencil) and consolidated as
the most awarded agency in the history of the Effie awards in argentina. In between, their digital department reorganized itself with the incor-
poration of new talent.
"we took advantage of the departure of pablo tajer, our digital creative director, to reorganize ourselves," says grau. "patán tarazaga and
Daniel minaker retook his place, while Juan Korman is now our social media expert, a specialty that is essential today. In addition, several
months ago hernán Zamora had entered as director of innovation. It is a universe that was always among the priorities of the agency.” at his
side, rodríguez cohen adds: "today, in the search for ideas, we do things that were not done before. so we need people who can explore these
worlds for the first time. and it is good to know that there are people outside who can complement each other with their different knowledge,
with the objective of finding new ideas."

Do NEw tEchNologIEs mEaN NEw IDEas?
GRAU: It all comes down to having a mobilizing idea. In this sense, adverti-
sing is still the same as always. While there was a time where advertising
was about presenting the characteristics of a product, since some time ago
the essence has remained the same. What changes, based on the new me-
dia, is the language. The novelty of this media is that it breaks with the logic
of advertising interrupting something. In that sense, it is more democratic:
one chooses whether or not to participate.

GRAU: Daniel Melero and Carlos Pérez are very careful about deciding in
which pitch BBDO participates. They try to have a healthy balance between
the number of customers and the number of people working in the agency.
In this case, it was a pitch eagerly awaited by the entire industry because it
is a customer every agency wants to have. It is a category that is very good,
and a company that is building its brand for many years, with very good
publicity. It was the customer we wanted in the category we wanted. That,
plus the fact that we do not participate in many pitches, made us live the
experience with much enthusiasm. It was a shot of energy for the entire
agency.
RODRÍGUEZ COHEN: It's a category that opens up a world of possibilities
with regard to new formats. And it's all ahead of us.

Cup, but the first half of the year was very focused on that. Today you see
it in ads and you want people to stop talking about it very quickly [laughs].
Nevertheless, it is an interesting moment. There are all agencies and
all brands of all categories talking about it. In the tide of blue and white
everything gets mixed up, so everyone tries to find a different way to pre-
sent the issue. You have to try to get to think outside the World Cup eupho-
ria and say something that has to do with the advertiser.
GRAU: At times, it seems that we all work for the same brand: "Argentina"

our clients there are many massive consumer brands, a category in which
the effects are seen later, so that the workload at agency remains intense.

how DID you aNalyZE thE campaIgN for pErsoNal IN thIs coNtEXt?
GRAU: The brand concept is "Every person is a world" so we wanted to tell
the stories of three "survivors" of different World Cups. Each person lives
the World Cup differently: we all survived the football "tragedies".
RODRIGUEZ COHEN: We were trying to get away from the euphoria and

for the team in reality, beyond speeches and promises, and turn an unoc-

how DID you arrIvE at thE agENcy?
I always thought that what drives and inspires is to admire your bosses.
This time, I was invited by Marco Versolato, a man who built a reputation
not only as creative, but as a nice leader. He assembled a team of creatives
that any agency would envy. To be able to work alongside creative directors
such as Keka, Brandão, Zico, Pedroso, Mosterio, Pascua, Rica or Hector is
very inspiring, something that is not found everywhere. Working at DM9 is
an amazing experience and at the same time, a hell of a challenge for any
creative, not only from Brazil.
how was thE Impact of thE worlD cup IN thE braZIlIaN aD-

It had a positive impact on the whole market. All brands have devoted
much of their budget to the period of the tournament, even those that are
not sponsors. Over here, everyone is dressed in green and yellow, shouting
"Brazil" and showing a contagious joy. I think that the biggest challenge we
have as communicators is to make our brands stand out in the middle of
that pile of green and yellow.
LA AGENCIA BRASILEÑA ACABA DE CONVOCAR A LEO MACIAS PARA QUE LIDERE EL EQUIPO CREATIVO JUNTO A MARCELO PAS-CO Y ZICO FARINA. “ES UNA EXPERIENCIA INCREÍBLE Y, AL MISMO TIEMPO, UN DESAFÍO INFERNAL”, DICE EL FLAMANTE DIRECTOR CREATIVO Y PRONOSTICA, SIN DUDAR, QUE SU PAÍS SE QUEDARÁ CON LA COPA DEL MUNDO: “¡ESTA VEZ NO LA VAMOS A DEJAR ESCAPAR!”.
THE BRAZILIAN AGENCY HAS JUST CALLED LEO MACIAS TO LEAD THE CREATIVE TEAM TOGETHER WITH MARCELO PASCO AND ZICO FARINA."IT IS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE AND AT THE SAME TIME, AN INFERNAL CHALLENGE" SAYS THE BRILLIANT CREATIVE DIREC-TOR AND HE ALSO FORECAST THAT WITHOUT ANY DOUBT, HIS COUNTRY WILL WIN THE WORLD CUP: "THIS TIME WE WILL NOT LET IT GO! "leo macias, the amazing creative director of Dm9DDb has no doubt,
this year the champion will be brazil. "I'd love to say that colombia,
spain or argentina will win, but it will not be the case" he jokes. "brazil
is a powerful team and it has already learned from past experiences,
such as the last world cup. this time we will not let go! "he states.
macias is excited not only by the proximity of the world cup, but also
by his recent incorporation to Dm9DDb, who just turned 25. "In its his-
tory, the company has had big names and their work is already part of
the history of brazilian advertising. therefore, Dm9 respects its past,
but it is not associated with it in a nostalgic way. the presidents of
the agency, alcir gomes leite and paul queiroz want the new ideas, "
assures the creative, who won dozens of awards worldwide .

our customers feel proud. That is our daily task and with it come the

do en varios proyectos.

SEBASTIÁN STAGNO: Above all, the campaign we did for Aerolíneas Ar-
gentinas. It was a very difficult job that we are very happy and proud of. It
took us almost a year to reach the standard we expect for Madre, to get
where we wanted to be, and what can be seen now is just that: a beginning.
IN 2013, CARLOS BAYALA, FOUNDER OF MADRE, MOVED TO LONDON TO LEAD THE CREATIVE PART OF MOTHER. HOWEVER, HE CON-TINUES WORKING SIDE BY SIDE WITH HIS TEAM IN BUENOS AIRES. "WE TRY TO HELP RAISING THE STANDARDS OF THE PROFESSION" ,POINT OUT THE DIRECTORS OF THE AGENCY IN ARGENTINA.
In september 2013, carlos bayala assumed the position of global
creative director and global partner at mother, and moved to london.
however, he is far from being disconnected from madre buenos ai-
res, the agency he founded in 2005 together with his wife, gabriela
scardaccione, who is well aware of what is happening in argentina.
"carlos left for london, but he did not leave madre," says alejandro
Domínguez, his associate and chief strategy director at the agency.
"In fact, now madre argentina has a bigger influence on the head-
quarter of mother, so our goal is to accomplish more, with carlos
being there."
meanwhile, rafael D'alvia, associate and chief creative director to-
gether with sebastián stagno, state: "In addition, we continue wor-
king with carlos on various projects. In fact, we just presented the
largest pitch of the agency together with him. the difference is that

And obviously, create fresh, new work that people like. But there is so-

have acquired a better understanding of the possibilities we have and, abo-
ve all, we do not want to create a separate digital department, rather we
want to create consciousness about digital media and interactiveness in

SEBASTIÁN STAGNO: Sometimes we are the most cynical and we deni-
grate our own profession, but we are good at advertising: there are very
talented people, very good agencies and the world recognizes it. That same
extreme attitude that we have in our Argentine DNA applies as well to ar-
chitecture, technology, medicine and the arts. There are many Argentine
Messis in many different professions circling around the world. Our dream
would not only be to have Messis, but teams that choose to stay in Argenti-
na. The football analogy is dangerous, since the vast majority of first league
players are playing outside of Argentina. Ideally, we would not have to let
talents leave by airplane, as happened in Messis case. That's a challenge
for everyone. And the challenge for Madre, is that the guys who work here
prefer this agency to any other agency in the world, having something so
special, so unique, that maintains them doing their best from here.

"Today, many things can be Outdoor; from a static sign up to a show on public streets. That's what makes this category so fascinating. But every idea, no matter how disruptive it is, must have an end. And keeping that in mind is essential when judging. For me, the most impor-tant aspects of a piece are: the positive impact on people, the execution of the idea and, above all, that it responds to a clear strategy. The category has evolved a lot, so it will be a week for learning a lot."

"In Cyber, there are many variables that one evaluates. However, there are some that are key for a creative work to stand out: strategy, innovation, use of techno-logy, originality, production, impact and effectiveness. What brings more expec-tations to me is not knowing what I can find. The diversity of approaches in which the category can be addressed helps to make it surprise us every year. In addi-tion, the jury is very diverse, with people from many different countries, so it will be very enlightening to hear their points of view. "
"When evaluating a piece, there are many variables that come into play, but I would sum them up in three instances. For starters, creativity and innovation, previously an almost exclusive property of advertising, nowadays they are playing a significant role in PR. Then comes the im-pact, the capacity of the action of mobili-zing, changing paradigms. So to say, that blows your mind! And finally, the results. Personally, I expect a little more than a lot from this experience. And professionally, I will try to contribute to Argentina having an increasingly important role in the PR category. "

"I like what is disruptive, what opens diffe-rent paradigms, what is new and genera-tes something new. In any category, what should prevail is: creativity, risk taking, the ability to approach a problem from a different angle. And to see how that idea achieves a result that stands out. That freshness - which is difficult, complex and subjective - must be the flag that pushes any challenge. The idea of sharing criteria and discussions in Cannes excites me a lot. It's great to see the festival from the inside. The outside dazzles; maybe this time I can find something more genuine, real and concrete. "
"In this category, we seek a combination of creative quality of the idea, the way it is expressed in the real context and in multiple channels and, above all, its ability to make people change their be-havior. I admire and look for ideas that excel in these three ways, but I also care for them to have the potential to last over time and grow. TIM GORDON CREATIVE DIRECTOR AT DROGA5
1. I think things are going well for advertising in Ameri-ca this year. Droga5 has won its fair share of new business and the industry seems to continually be pushing itself to create exciting new work. The problem for me is that exciting new work (or an-ything exciting) is hard for me to deal with. Being from Canada, a nation of polite and reserved people, I’m unable to outwardly express any intense emotions. Even just writing this, I'm left with awkward smile on my face and my legs crossed as if I have to go to the bathroom really badly.
2. It’s pretty hard to define creativity at any point. But if I had to define it today, I would say it is equal parts personal expression, pro-blem solving and just trying things until something sticks. Mostly, creativity is looking at things from different angles and approaching situations in different ways. In the end, what I love about creativity the most is it knows no bor-ders, knows no master and knows no limits. Just like Master P.
UNITED STATES
TOR MYHRENPRESIDENT OF GREY NEW YORK AND GLOBAL CHIEF CREATIVE OFFICER OF GREY
1. The industry is in a much better place than in it was few years ago. Before, fear ruled. And it was fear not only considering the eco-nomic situation but also the possibility that adverti-sing could become totally irrelevant. Many said that it was running out, that Google would get it all, that television was dead. But it was nonsense. Storytelling in audiovisual format is nowadays more relevant than ever; It is what grows fastest online. While we
remain being great storyte-llers, the industry will still be relevant. 2. I truly believe that everyo-ne is creative. It's one of the things that we emphasize in Grey. The only reason why we get paid is to solve bu-siness problems creatively. That does not imply that the responsibility only lies by the creative department, but also by the other areas. To be creative in problem sol-ving: this is the current de-finition. Before it was more restricted and that was the reason why a person recei-ved full credit for the idea. Now it is about something broader.
UNITED STATES

ANDY SANDOZ CREATIVE WORK AT CLUB PARTNER
1. It’s like the re-start of a race, when the safety car is out. No one is actually firing on all cylinders or doing any impressive maneuvers, yet. But there is a lot of jocke-ying for places and warming up of tires. If you'll permit me to push the metaphor a bit more, people are also deciding which cars to climb in. In short, it feels like the race is about to restart in an exciting way, but as of right now... warm up those slicks.
2. It’s something to be pro-tected, respected, celebrated and most of all democrati-zed. It's now a fundamental differentiator in business, or perhaps it always was. But the tech rise simply makes it more important, and the In-ternet provides a whole new playground to those that can capitalize. Better ideas faster, as my kiwi mate Matt says, if he's reading this. But most of all, it means freedom.
UNITED KINDOM

1. I look over the Middle East and Africa, where advertising is like a man running after a bus called "international ad-vertising standards", whilstcarrying too much baggage and trying to talk on his mo-bile phone and send anemail. At the same time, he has to dodge wars and civil strife, shield his eyes from teargas and try to make sure he doesn’t get blown up by aterrorist bomb. It is, unfortu-nately, a massively unstable region, where the long term is not something you plan for. However, booming eco-nomies mean that our man runs pretty damn fast. Add to that the astonishing creativi-ty that is being unleashed by connectivity and even revolu-
tions, and you will find that he often overtakes that bus. Except that he is too busy torealise that. 2. Creativity today is still the same it has been for centu-ries: the ability to find sim-ple, elegant, extraordinary, mind-blowing solutions to problems.
MIDDLE EAST & AFRICA

1. Things are good, but as always, the market it mo-ving. The big TVC spot is still there, but it is all about en-gaging audiences and con-sumers with other means as well. Microsites, tweets, apps, events, etc, all play a major part of the toolkit needed. But also TV series based work, mini-documen-taries and branded content are more and more key. Bu-siness wise, it is difficult to
keep a retainer-based client, as most of the work is project based and agencies are held accountable on the hours they spent.2. Creativity is still the tool to engage and move people.

1. Slowly the industry is lea-ving the idea of just being an advertising company behind to become an industry that offers business solutions. In that way, we will be able to charge better since we will not only sell illusions, as some believe happens in the world of communication. The technology will help us to propose business solu-tions and globalization will permit that our ideas reach many corners of the planet. This does not mean that the commercials that we love so much and see at festivals like Cannes Lions will die. Maybe they will become cases be-cause the cases are now the new TV.
2. To be creative advertising professional means to keep aiming at winning awards at Cannes, after having won a Grand Prix and 20 Lions.

MEXICO
FLAVIO PANTIGOSOEXECUTIVE CREATIVE DIRECTOR AT YOUNG&RUBICAM LIMA
1. Peru is going through a time of great excitement and enthusiasm, reflecting a sense of pride and self-esteem that is derived from a leading economic growth in the region. The advertising business is growing faster than the GDP and nowadays the market share is around 700 million USD. Almost all major international agen-cies are here. However, it is a market still ruled by traditio-nal media, being the TV the king media. The digital area grows every year about a 30%, indicating a clear trend in the eyes of advertisers. Mobile comes with great for-ce, as there is a very strong growth in smartphone pe-netration in the market. The only limit is the lack of mass broadband in a country as complicated geography. Five years ago, in Y&R Lima we undertook the challenge of making an agency that would transcend the limits of our market, proving that we can and should be important actors on the international map. This created the feeling that it is possible to be prota-gonists and more and more agencies are adding to this philosophy: Mayo FCB, Fahr-enheit DDB, JWT, McCann ... Our goal is that advertising creativity gives us an added value as a country, as does culinary creativity nowadays, for example. In 2013, Peru was the third most awarded
South American country at Cannes Lions, a feat unima-ginable a few years ago. 2. Creativity means helping brands not only to meet their business goals but also to do so with a clear commitment to the Peruvian society that expects companies to take a role of transparency, respect, creation of an identity and inclusion. Helping to "think Peru" and finding our place in the world, in a dialogue way, sharp, provocative and constructive.
PERÚ

¿cuÁl Es El DIfErENcIal DE casta DIva buENos aIrEs?

mercial), luciano quilici (director), franco verdoia (director) y “tano”
celentano (director) asienten.

Si no me divierto, me preocu-
po.
convive intensamente.
¿IDENtIfIcaN cIErtas tENDENcIas EN la taNDa actual?
VALE MAGRINI: La tanda siempre me sorprende.
creando minuto a minuto.

WE HAVE A TEAM + cASTA DIVA BUENOS AIRES
what maKEs casta DIva buENos aIrEs DIffErENt?
MARCOS HERNÁNDEZ: It is an independent production company with
huge content of human quality. For us, each project represents a unique
challenge. Therefore, we face each one with close attention at all levels.
We establish a close relationship with both the agency and the client. This
allows us to consider the production design together, with high aesthetic
contribution of our directors, resulting in a product of excellent quality and
price. The team consists of four producers with great trajectory and ex-
perience in the market, and of talented directors with different styles. We
have recently worked among others for Chivas, Jeep, Visa, Coca Cola, Hei-
neken, Procter & Gamble, Kellogs, Danone and Grupo Peñaflor. In addition,
we opened a division of content production this year, where we develop
everything from fiction to branded content.
what Is thIs NEw DIvIsIoN about?
ROMINA KIVATINETZ: Through Casta Diva Buenos Aires Branded Content,
we generate content to meet the current needs and the use of new tech-
nologies, while we strengthen our position as a 360° production company.
Furthermore, it is an experience that enriches the work of our directors.
Fiction and film go hand in hand with the work of advertising; they feed
themselves from their feedback. This year we are committed to the growth
of this division.
CASTA DIVA HAS EXPERIENCED PRODUCERS, TALENTED DIRECTORS, PARTNERS WORLDWIDE AND NOW, A DIVISION OF BRANDED CONTENT. IN ADDITION, FLORA & FAUNO, A NEW DOUBLE OF DIRECTORS, HAVE RECENTLY BECOME PART OF THE TEAM. HOWEVER, IT´S CORE STRENGHT IS THE UNITY OF THE GROUP. "OUR BASE IS TEAMWORK", THEY COMMENT.
those responsible for casta Diva buenos aires know it well: in this indus-
try, the human element is central. therefore, in recent years they for-
med a staff that enjoys the links that are created in each project, not only
within the production company and the agency but also with the client.
"our base is teamwork," says marcos hernandez, executive producer.
beside him, carolina legovich (producer), romina Kivatinetz (content
producer), valeria magrini (commercial producer), luciano quilici (di-
rector), franco verdoia (director) and "tano" celentano (director) agree
on the following: "we are a group that is constantly growing, taking new
risks and challenges," continues marcos.

LUCIANO QUILICI: I am very happy. I had forgotten how funny it was to film
here. And the truth is that I'm enjoying it a lot. Not only do I like the talent
of the people I work with, but also the possibility of laughing when I work.
Moreover, filming with Argentine actors is always the best option.
taNo, you also camE bacK to worK for thE argENtINE marKEt.
how Do you sEE thE marKEt?
TANO CELENTANO: After working for many countries, coming back to film
in Argentina fills me with inspiration and pride. Each project in the country
is a challenge. Without demeaning any market, Argentine creative people
are unique, as well as their ideas; they are always looking for the best, what
is new, what has an impact. We work closely together for each project to be
transcendental. I think it's in our DNA.
fraNco, how Do you facE Each worK?
FRANCO VERDOIA: For me, every project is an opportunity to learn so-
mething new. Advertising has something that fascinates me: the frantic
pace, the constant change, the speed of ideas and the mixture of people
involved in each process. My fuel is joy. If I don´t have fun, I become worried.
I love integrating groups of inspiring people, it inspires me. And I like to think
of each project as a transitional family within which one lives intensely.
Do you IDENtIfy cErtaIN trENDs IN thE currENt batch?
VALE MAGRINI: The string of commercials always surprises me. Either with
many or few resources, creativity always stands out. A "magic moment" oc-
curs when they succeed to put themselves in the place of the people and
rescue the strongest insights to generate identification and awaken emo-
tions. Good ideas are the engine of the memorable.
whIch stagE of shootINg Is thE oNE you ENJoy most?
CAROLINA LEGOVICH: Above all, the moment when we see our work re-
flected, to see the directors at their best, working together and creating
minute after minute. Filming has the distinction of being 100% the result of
teamwork, which involves many people, and that makes it human. We need
everyone involved and it is essential to achieve a good atmosphere. And that
depends on the director and the producer. To Casta Diva, creating a good
environment is a must in every shooting. It is there where the link between
the agency and client becomes stronger.
casta DIva Is prEsENt IN sEvEral cItIEs worlDwIDE. how Is
thE rElatIoNshIp wIth othEr offIcEs?
CAROLINA LEGOVICH: Having partners in cities around the world allows us
to always have different proposals to requests from agencies and clients.
We have a variety of directors and locations, and can shoot in other coun-
tries at an Argentine market price. That's a big differential. We have the
possibility of filming in Mexico, San Pablo, Prague, Istanbul or the most
recognized cities in Italy. This year we opened an office in Los Angeles,
and this expanded our director´s staff. On the other hand, thanks to the
devaluation in Argentina, in recent months more possibilities linked to pro-
duction services emerged, since we offer very competitive prices.

pliadora y reveladora.
bicam, soho square, DDb, ogilvy, publicis, leo burnett, lowe ssp3

INSTANTES MÁGICOSSTANDING IN FRONT OF HIS OWN STUDIO, PHOTOGRAPHER MARTIN KÖHLER STATES THAT, IN A WORLD FULL OF IMAGES, THE PICTU-RES THAT PREVAIL ARE THOSE THAT CAPTURE THE ESSENCE OF A MOMENT. IN RECENT YEARS, HE WORKED ON ADVERTISING, EDITO-RIALS AND PRODUCTS FOR FIRST LEVEL AGENCIES AND COMPANIES.
martin Köhler took his first steps in gonzález Eusevi & Köhler, his
fathers´ advertising agency. when he was just a boy, during his holi-
days, he liked to spend time looking at sketches in the art room. but
his favorite place was always a room where there was a camera, tri-
pod, lights, an enlarger and a revealer. "when no one saw me, I slip-
ped through and shot pictures with the camera, even though it did not
have reels. It was exciting. that were, without a doubt, the moments I
developed interest for this vocation" he says.
today, martin is standing in front of his own studio, which he defines
as "global and creative". "we provide all the services a production re-
quires," he says. "we receive the sketch, study it and provide feedback
with the aim for it to grow in all aspects." lately, Köhler studio conduc-
ted projects for companies and agencies such as coca cola, quilmes,
claro, Isenbeck, movistar, young & rubicam, soho square, DDb, ogilvy,
publicis, leo burnett, lowe ssp3 bogotá and ogilvy bogotá.
MAGIC MOMENTS
who forms part of thE tEam?
Lucas Peydro, my partner, is the producer of the studio, and Santiago Ba-
rros is the art director. Together we turn the project around and bring the
photographic focus to the fore, creating something that has its own iden-
tity. For post-production, we count on Guido Urrutia, our main retoucher.
With him, we finish giving it the shape we imagined it to have the day we
receive the proposal. We also work with 3D, but as a resource to meet cer-
tain needs of the image, not for performance sake.
whIch Jobs gENEratE most satIsfactIoN to you?
All projects generate satisfaction, to a greater or lesser extent. The ones I
like most are those we can really enjoy from the first moment, when they
allow us to propose ideas freely. In such cases, the client and the agency
end their relationship happier and therefore, we are happy as well. Howe-
ver, I'd say that the one that yields most satisfaction is always the most
recent one. This is the case of some shots we did in Colombia, 300 kilo-
meters from Bogota, in a historic village of artisans lost in the mountains,
for the agency Sancho BBDO. It was something new; 15 days before, we
never imagined that we would ever be shooting there. That´s why I am
telling you: each project involves a new challenge to solve, and that's what
generates satisfaction.
whIch aspEcts Do you focus oN whEN EvaluatINg thE qualIty
of a photo?
It depends for each photo. On a commercial level, I like when I'm surprised
by an idea or message; it's my first filter. Then, I want to be able to believe
that what I see really happened, or could happen. If it passes these filters,
I start to look at the technical aspects. On an artistic level, it is difficult
to answer the question because of what is happening today in the digital
world and social networks. There are many pictures to see all the time, but
that magical moment. And not everyone has the sensitivity to achieve this.
You can get lucky once, but the good ones do it all the time.
how Do you maNagE to call attENtIoN wIth a photo IN a
worlD ovErloaDED wIth ImagEs?
Being attentive. You must have the sensibility to see and perceive what
catches your eye, what worries you, what surrounds you, what happens
inside you. And then you have to have the creativity to capture that in a
picture. Surely that picture wakens the curiosity of the viewer.
how Do thE agENcy aND thE clIENt partIcIpatE IN thE proDuctIoNs?
The agency is always involved; it is good and necessary for it to be like
this. We like to work in a team with the creative director. On the other
hand, while the client has his own ideas for the photo, these ideas are not
always adequate for meeting the target. In these cases, we manage to
convince the client to trust in our experience and give us the freedom to
work alongside the creative team. It is important for them to relax and to
trust in themselves, in the reason why they chose us.
IN whIch fIElD woulD you lIKE to DEEpEN IN thE comINg yEars?
We're starting to film, because the photographer sometimes feels the
need to continue narrating what he wanted to convey with the image. I
am thinking about the picture of a movie billboard: it can be awesome
and narrate an idea or a special moment, but it produces the need to see
what follows.
IN thE yEar of thE worlD-cup, whIch ImagE Do you bElIEvE to rE-
prEsENt argENtINa bEst?
Argentina is a special country, geographically amazing due to its diversity.
As a society, there are times when it seems the most supportive country
on the planet, and others, when it seems the most selfish. Therefore, it
is difficult to answer the question. However, if I manage to find a picture
that represents us, I would not explain it you: I would send you the picture.

JOSE ALFREDO ALQUICIRA: The culture of commercial communication in
Mexico is not as deep as in other economies. It means that here in Mexico,
when economic challenges present themselves, investment in communi-
cation decreases, which detriments results, sales and market penetration.
It is why 2013 was a difficult year for Mexico due to reform speculation and
government expenditures frozen or decreased. But we believe that com-
munication is a very useful tool for any organization. Nobody buys what is
not present in his head, so that - even in such challenging conditions as
an economy in downturn, it is important to keep advertising investment
flowing and perhaps even increase it.

such as BTL activations or digital strategies, for example, tend to increase.
However, considering the bigger picture, the increase is slight.
what Is thE maIN obJEctIvE of braNDs toDay?

functional benefits but also emotional and social ones.

The activity about challenges we called “por tus colores o nada” ("for your

ticipants in Latin America, compared to all the other adidas federations.
It was very important to have challenged consumers to see how far they
were willing to go to be able to see the National Team. In particular, the
tattoo challenge or the challenge of describing a goal were successful and
had the peculiarity of being carried out in our own stores, which made the
activity even more integral to the brand.
FOR MORE THAN 40 YEARS, THE BRAND ACCOMPANIES THE ARGENTINE NATIONAL TEAM. FOR THIS FIFA WORLD CUP, THE BRAND PERFORMED SEVERAL ACTIVITIES WHICH HAD GREAT RE-SULTS. "WE WERE WORKING TOWARDS THIS TOURNAMENT FOR OVER 18 MONTHS", SAYS PABLO CAVALLARO, BRAND MARKE-TING MANAGER AT THE COMPANY.
the relationship between adidas and the argentine football associa-
tion (afa) is more than a milestone, more than a temporary relation-
ship linked to a particular tournament. In fact, it is one of the most
extensive connections in history between a brand and a federation.
"for adidas it is an honor to accompany the argentine National team
for over 40 years," says pablo cavallaro, brand marketing manager
at the company. "and the world cup, of course, is a unique moment
for the entire company, both from the business perspective as well

the development of the first Official LED TV of the Argentine national team.

gana, me rapo”.
¿quÉ otras accIoNEs DEsarrollaroN alrEDEDor DE EstE coNcEpto?
ES HORA DE ALENTAR / IT'S TIME TO SUPPORT THE TEAM
+ REXONA
rexona.com.ar
how DID thE campaIgN EmErgE?
The brand message is " MAKE: MORE ". The most common at this time is
that all of us make an unusual promise to make the team win but usually
it ends up in nothing. Therefore, we proposed to turn the equation around
and invite fans to promise less and do more to really support the team.
Thus, the players can get to know that here there are 45 million people
motivating them to do more. With the hashtag #PorArgentinaHagoMás (for
Argentina I do more), fans share photos and videos where they show their
promises fulfilled. Enough of people saying: "If Argentina wins, I shave my
entire head." The idea is that, directly, they shave their heads and share
it with everyone. Rexona collects all these actions and shows them to Ja-
vier Mascherano to motivate him and the rest of the team to follow giving
everything on the court.
why DID you DEcIDE to rElatE thE braND to thE fIgurE of Ja-

Mascherano was elected as the new ambassador for Rexona, since he is
a clear example of our new brand philosophy. He is a player who always
has something more to offer, he tries his best and leaves the soul in every
game.
IN THE YEAR OF THE FIFA WORLD CUP, THE LEADING BRAND OF ANTI-PERSPIRANTS REMAINED VERY ACTIVE. IN RECENT MONTHS THE BRAND PRESENTED A NEW PRODUCT AND DEVELOPED A COMPREHENSIVE CAMPAIGN THAT INVITES THE PUBLIC TO SUP-PORT THE ARGENTINEAN NATIONAL TEAM IN DIFFERENT WAYS.
according to those responsible of rexona, the company is always loo-
king forward to be close to the people with proposals that are alig-
ned with consumer tastes. therefore in the year of the world cup,
the brand sought to live the football fever with his followers. "with
that goal in mind, we presented a new variety: fanatics" says her-
nán sperber, senior brand manager for rexona. "this is a limited
edition, which apart from offering rexona’s motionsensetm techno-
logy, presents a theme designed with the colors of the argentinean
flag." along with this release, rexona presented the campaign less
promises and more action (prometé menos. hacé más). this campaign
seeks to promote the interaction with the fans.
what othEr actIoNs DID you DEvElop arouND thIs coNcEpt?
The campaign is completed with a commercial that communicates the
campaign mainstream, three TV commercials starred by Mascherano, a
press event, radio publicity, graphic publicity, public publicity and a ven-
ding machine that captures promises fulfilled in different parts of the city
and, moreover, it will be on Fox Sports floor for guest to programs to have
the opportunity to fulfil a promise live. Finally, we are inviting people to join
the 10K Rexona Fiestas Mayas marathon, on 25 May. The idea is that 10,000
people fulfil one last promise for Argentina.

They are central to the strategies of multiple interactions. In many cases,
they allow the creation of a new vehicle known as "free media", becau-
se of the fact that the contents become viral and reach beyond what was
originally thought for. In return, communication can escape our control;
hence it requires monitoring and ongoing dedication. In this sense, costs

eso es sólo la c”, aclara.
¿hubo uN momENto partIcular EN quE tE hayas ENamoraDo
Cito a otro gran fotógrafo, Paul Graham,
EN El proyEcto If oNly for a sEcoND (auNquE sEa por uN sE-
guNDo) trabaJastE coN uN tEma DIfÍcIl DE uNa maNEra orIgI-
Nal.
slow food.

DIVINA OBSESIÓN
what Is your fIrst mEmory rElatED to photography?
I have two. The first one is looking at my parents wedding photos. I was the
10th child, so I was seeing my parents much younger in these photos; they
would open to me a time before I existed. I could look at them for hours
and try to imagine how things were then. I think that memory, as much
as aesthetic, is one of the more important aspects of photography. I come
from a big family, we are 11 children and my parents would take a family
photo perhaps every six months. That’s my second memory: we would line
up from youngest to oldest. Again, I think that most of my memories from
this period come from these images.
HE WAS NOT A CHILD WHEN HE HAD HIS FIRST CAMERA, BUT SOON PHOTOGRAPHY BECAME AN OBSESSION AND HE DEVELOPED A METEORIC CAREER. IN RECENT YEARS, HE PRODUCED ADVERTISING CAMPAIGNS FOR FIRST-CLASS BRANDS WITH AN UNMISTAKABLE STYLE THAT MIXES FANTASY AND REALITY. It is hard to believe: vincent Dixon was 22 years old when he received
his first camera as a gift. born in Ireland, he already lived in paris,
where he discovered his passion for photography. shortly after star-
ting his professional career, he shot campaigns for first-class brands
such as absolut and perrier, which quickly gained him notoriety
throughout the advertising world.
his work exhibits sense of humor, a refined style and a precise atten-
tion to detail. New technologies are an integral tool in his work, since
they help him to merge the fantastic with reality. In recent years, he
won dozens of awards for his pieces (including several recognitions in
cannes lions) and collaborated with Nissan, pepsi and adidas, among
other companies. for one of his latest projects, If only for a second,
he immortalized the moment in which 20 cancer patients opened their
eyes and saw the result of an extraordinary makeover. Dixon says that
his influences go from the clash to caravaggio. “and that’s just c”, he
explains.
was thErE a partIcular momENt, a KIND of aN EpIphaNy, IN
whIch you fEll IN lovE wIth photography?
Not really. I quickly became obsessed and photography became my life.
At first, I only shot in black and white and would literally see in black and
white. I photographed all and everything. I have never studied photography,
but was obsessed: I ate, slept and dreamed photography.
strEEt photography was your fIrst lovE. what Is It about It
that attracts you so much?
I love to discover. The street is always changing, you are always changing
and that can make for an exciting combination. You have to be very focused
when you are shooting on the street and sometimes, when everything is
right, you really start seeing. There is beauty everywhere, you just need to
look for it.
how woulD you DEscrIbE your stylE?
I try to make photographs. Gary Winograd said that he photographed to
see how things would look in a photo. I love that definition. As a commer-
cial photographer, that is not as easy as it seems. There is always pres-
sure to perfect everything and soon you finish with a bad illustration. I try
to make images that are not perfect: it’s the accident that makes things
interesting. To quote another great photographer, Paul Graham: “Photo-
graphy is easy, photography is difficult”. When working for myself, I try to
connect emotionally. It is really not intellectual or conceptual. I simply try
to capture a moment that might or should exist as a memory.
IN your proJEct If oNly for a sEcoND, you worKED wIth a
DIffIcult subJEct IN aN orIgINal way. how DID you comE up
wIth thE IDEa?
The idea was not mine, it came from Leo Burnett Paris. My friend Xa-
vier Beauregard is ECD there and, when he told me about the campaign,
I really wanted to be part of it. I had to capture the moment in which the
subjects discovered their make over, so I thought about drilling a hole in a
mirror as well as shooting through a two way mirror. Fortunately the two
way mirror worked, gave us a lot of flexibility and allowed us to shoot stills
and video simultaneously. Shooting the people with their eyes closed was
not part of the original brief, but I asked everyone to close their eyes as I
focused, and it was so beautiful, the calm before the smiles and laughter,
that I shot that too. It was a really moving experience. The idea was so
strong that I wanted to use the simplest Light, so that nothing distracts
from the makeover and the expression.
IN a worlD that Is full of ImagEs, what Is thE KEy to catch
thE pEoplE’s EyEs?
I think that changes constantly and depends on the audience, so in the end
we really just work for ourselves as we are the only people who we can be
honest with. It is great when others appreciate our work, but that can di-
sappear and if it did, would make the work less valuable? When you study
your own work, you get an intuition for what is good and when it does not
work. You have to trust yourself.
how Do you thINK that photography wIll EvolvE IN thE futurE?
Cameras will get smaller and will record everything continuously. We will
focus after the event. And when we do, there will be many other recordings
of the same moment from everyone present, so we will have a cubist vi-
sion of everything, seen from many perspectives, all probably in 3D. But
I wonder if we remember everything, do we forget it simultaneously. Ed-
ward Weston, one of the great 20th century photographers, would spend
days preparing for one exposure. One image. We are moving away from
that type of thinking, but I think a lot of people will go back to that, like
slow food.
