Liebe Leserin, lieber Leser
Und dann sagen vielleicht auch Sie: «Music was my first love...»

Dear Reader,
When music lovers hear the name Revox, their eyes invariably brighten
up and they rave about it.There is barely any other brand in the field of
home entertainment equipment that holds such fascination as Revox.
Music is a meaningful accompaniment to our lives, and one which has
an effect upon us from the moment we are born. Music can lift our spir-
its up at joyful and festive events, but it can also move and support us in
sad moments.
Music is like wine – a bad wine is a dreadful experience for a connois-
seur, and those who love music only wish to hear it at its best.
This is why the founder of Revox, Dr. Willi Studer dedicated himself to
reproduce music that sounds as close as possible to the original. The
demand for quality and his ability to interpret it have made Studer and
Revox a worldwide «standard» for musical recording and reproduction.
All the big names in the music world, from the Beatles to Bernstein, have
worked with his «machines».
In the meantime some things have changed and this transformation has
occurred rapidly, particularly in home entertainment equipment. Revox
products continue to fulfill the demand for high standards of quality. You
should always be able to enjoy music, whether it is a feature film on DVD
in your home cinema, a symphony in your armchair, or party music with
your friends.
With the world leading multi-room system from Revox, you can now
enjoy your music not just in one room but in up to 32 rooms within your
home. And there is more to it! The system allows you to listen to eight dif-
ferent kinds of music at the same time.
Then you too might say – «Music was my first love...»

tiven, sondern an architektonischen Ansätzen.
Freiheit. Gut ist, was gefällt und umsetzbar ist. Jedoch ist Frankreich eher
traditionell.
What is your design philosophy?Iria Degen: The main focus for me is how people live and work in a
space. What I find important is furniture and fixtures that will last as well
as providing a sense of peace and harmony. Therefore I focus on an
architectonic approach, rather than a decorative one.
André Treina: I want to create rooms that are ready to come to life.I like
strong, challenging and timeless architecture that can accommodate any
style of furnishing.
What does this mean in real terms?Degen: I prefer natural materials such as wood, stone, fabric and metal
over synthetic materials such as plastic. I am happy to work with muted
colours like beige or shades of grey, and am not comfortable with garish
ones. The furnishings should offer a neutral base because it is the people
who add the colour.
Treina: I appreciate high rooms that are enhanced by a flood of natural
light. Light brings shape and makes the room tangible. Shadows and the
play of light brighten it up. I use colours selectively as a natural shaping
feature.
Iria Degen, you also live in Paris. What are the currenttrends in the city of design?Although there is a continuous flow of new trends, I feel that there is a
great deal of freedom at the moment. Anything goes if you like some-
thing and it is adaptable. But whereas I find Milan avant-garde and
Switzerland plucky, France tends to be traditional. I wouldn’t like to be a
trendsetter – I like timeless modernity.
What part does sound play in a room?Degen: What I produce is easy on the eye and sound has to appeal the
ears. The two must go hand in hand and the design of the music equip-
ment is, of course, very important to me.
Treina: Sound is a part of the room, the architecture and the idea, just
like light. If music resonates with you then you should incorporate it into
the planning and design from the outset.
You also work with Revox. Why is that?Degen: Top quality and elegant design. Revox is constantly developing,
and the pieces of equipment are adaptable and can be deployed indi-
vidually.
Treina: I have to agree with that. The name has a tradition, and also the
equipment can be combined well with control systems for the household.10

an. Das muss zusammenpassen. Natürlich ist mir auch das Design der
Musikanlagen sehr wichtig.

Ernst Schmids. Ein Protokoll der
60 Tage, nachdem die Künstlerin
1990 am «California College of
Arts & Crafts» in Oakland als
«Master of Fine Arts» ausgezeich-
net wurde. «Alle Felder sind
Symbole für meine Geschichten,
die ich aufs Wesentliche kompri-
miere und dem Betrachter öffne.»
Häufige Themen der Rappers-
wilerin: Spiritualität, fremde Kul-
turen, Religionen, Politik.
Die Gemälde von Hedi-K. Ernst
Schmid sind oft aus Beton und
Gips. Materialien, mit denen man
rasch arbeiten muss. «Schon
darum kann ich nicht zu lange
herumfeilen. Ich spüre immer,
wann meine Bilder fertig sind», so
die Künstlerin. Um einen Dialog
geht es bei ihren Skulpturen.
Schlanke Figuren aus Bronze oder
Ton, die sich Richtung Himmel
winden. «Weil die Figuren gleich
gross wie ich sind, kann ich eine
Beziehung mit ihnen aufbauen.»
Sixty colourful squares arranged
like a chess board tell part of the
story of Hedi-K. Ernst Schmid’s life
– a diary of sixty days after the
artist was awarded her Master of
Fine Arts at the California College
of Arts & Crafts in Oakland in 1990.
«All the squares are symbols for
my stories, broken down into the
essentials and offered up to the
viewer.» The recurrent themes for
this artist from Rapperswil are spir-
ituality, foreign cultures, religion
and politics.
Hedi-K. Ernst Schmid’s relief paint-
ings largely consist of concrete
and plaster of Paris – materials
which have to be worked speedily.
«For this reason I can’t spend too
long perfecting them and I can
feel when my pictures are ready»,
says the artist. The dialogue is the
main subject in her sculptures:
Slim figures in bronze or clay
which spiral up skywards. «Becau-
se the figures are the same height
as me, I am able to build up a rela-
tionship with them.»

Butoh Drawing
Wer kommuniziert,hat verschiedene Möglichkeiten: Sprache,Bild,Klang,
Tanz, Installation, Inszenierung.
Ernst Schmid?
«Natürlich gibt mir Musik Energie. Ohne sie könnte ich nicht leben.
Allerdings spielen äussere Einflüsse immer weniger eine Rolle. Mich
inspirieren mehr die inneren Werte.» Darum ist es für Hedi-K. Ernst
Europa lebe. Ich geniesse die Kultur, die Vielschichtigkeit Europas.»

Butoh Drawing
We all have various ways of communicating: language, pictures, sound,
dance, installations and performing. This 55-year old artist is entering a
new phase. «I am now trying to put my messages across with Butoh
Drawing.» She illustrates this by slowly drawing circles in the air with
her foot and her hand. «I am also going to paint a white picture, draw-
ing in all the light from outside and from around me.» As one who has
devoted herself to the colour black, Hedi-K. Ernst Schmid is taking a
risk here.To illustrate the point she quotes the fashion designer,Christa
de Carouge: «As I grow older my needs become ever simpler until all I
will need is a chair, a table and a bed.»
This lifestyle has also been transplanted into the home of Hedi-K.Ernst
Schmid and her husband Alfred Schmid above Lake Zurich. The rooms
are light and are furnished in a slick and contemporary style that is
uncompromising. This is also how one should enjoy music. «When we
started to build the house in 2000 we looked no further than Revox. The
name is a legend.» Listening to music is also without a compromise: In
the living room the acoustic ceiling ensures a rich sound and a sense
of well-being.
Music to support the mood
«I find the ingenious technology of the multi-room system fascinating,
because it allows you to enjoy various types of music in different rooms
using the Revox audio-server», says Hedi-K. Ernst Schmid. The artist
works to the strains of jazz and classical music in her studio.
What does music mean to the work of Hedi-K. Ernst Schmid? «The
music gives me energy, I couldn’t live without it, even though external
influences are playing an ever decreasing part. It is inner values that I
find more inspiring.» Thus it no longer matters to Hedi-K.Ernst Schmid
where she works. «Of course, after twelve years as a professor of art in
the USA I miss the openness of those people, but ultimately it is up to
me personally whether I continue to live out this freedom in Europe. I
enjoy Europe’s culture and its multi-faceted nature.»

Prozess und Inszenierung
Im Herbst 2002 wurde die Vision von Egon und Kurt Babst, Besitzer der
Wellis AG,Wirklichkeit,das «foroom.willsau» eröffnet. Auf 2000m2 wurden
Fabrikcharakter bewahrt und neue Installationen geschaffen. So wie die
Bar und VIP-Lounge, ein Beton-Kubus der Zürcher Architektin Pia
Schmid.
Setting the scene
In Autumn 2002 the dream of Egon and Kurt Babst, owners of Wellis AG,
became a reality with the opening of «foroom.willsau». The factory
character has been preserved and new installations created across its
2000m2 area. An example of this is the bar and VIP lounge – a concrete
cube designed by the Zurich-based architect, Pia Schmid. However, the
space will never actually be finished as such: «Maybe one day some
young designers will produce new furnishing and fitting concepts in the
course of a seminar. foroom can be offbeat and lively.» This is Edith
Zankl’s definition of setting a scene.
The network extends still further, however. As well as the sister compa-
nies,Wellis, and Bel Etage – the hotel fitters, key partners such as Revox
are financially and conceptually involved with foroom. «All participants
are using synergies and are placing themselves in the public eye»,
according to Zankl. So is this a PR initiative? foroom is enacting its own
drama at the club – there is much whispering on the «hotel grapevine»
about whether the furniture manufacturer is simply promoting itself
there by staging some kind of publicity stunt. Hardly – because there is
no back-slapping at foroom, instead the target clientele is being actively
embraced. It will not be long before the clapperboard is heard beyond
the country’s borders.
