F_AIR - Florence Artist In Residence è il primo programma di residenza nel centro storico di Firenze e ha il suo punto di forza nell’essere parte integrante della struttura accademica della School of Fine Arts di Florence University of the Arts. La tripla articolazione di F_AIR come residenza d’artista, galleria e dipartimento d’arte ne determina la mission. Fondata e promossa da Florence University of the Arts, F_AIR offre ad artisti e studenti di tutto il mondo l’opportunità di poter crescere, sperimentare e produrre cambiamenti di vita grazie al contatto diretto con le realtà contemporanee in città e con ambienti stimolanti della struttura accademica della scuola. Con una fitta programmazione di mostre, artist talk, attività laboratoriali, e tre residenze l’anno per artisti tra i 25 e i 38 anni, F_AIR svolge un ruolo attivo nella vita artistica e culturale di Firenze.

F_AIR is the art residency program in the historic center of Florence and hosts artists from all over the world. Founded by Florence University of the Arts and located at the institution’s Fine Arts campus, F_AIR creates stimulating opportunities to connect artists and students to contemporary art in Florence and offers a rich program of artist’s talks, laboratory activities, exhibitions, and three residencies a year for artists between 25 and 38 years of age.

Riflesso di memorie: apparizioni effimere, evanescenti, si manifestano come scorci di vita vissuta che riaffiorano alla mente a testimonianza di un passato che ancora agisce sull’oggi.

Le fotografie di Sara Menegatti sono attivatori di coscienza, si basano sul potere evocativo d’oggetti ed ambienti quali silenti narratori di storie passate. Lo specchio è il mezzo scelto dall’artista per farci intraprendere questo straordinario viaggio della memoria: attraverso di esso si accede a dimensioni altre, dell’inconscio, del sogno, della fantasia.

Melanconia e romanticismo: una visione poetica raccontata con immagini semplici ma simboliche. Il tempo si riavvolge, il passato ed il futuro coincidono in questi scatti in cui magicamente negli specchi viene riflesso un tempo differente. Le fotografie di Sara ci narrano per immagini la vita vissuta. La casa, scenografia del “racconto”, viene “dipinta” come il simbolo della famiglia, del focolare domestico, del femminile, luogo di protezione dal mondo, ma anche teatro della messa in scena dell’amore, del dramma, del decadimento e dell’abbandono.

Questa giovane ragazza vive il suo tempo e ci racconta molto più di quello che razionalmente cristallizza attraverso l’obiettivo. Una volta che lo specchio di Alice viene varcato il flusso del pensiero che ne scaturisce è incontrollabile: la paura del decadimento, delle occasioni perdute, l’incognita della vita. Emergono così i grandi temi esistenzialisti: la vita, l’amore e la morte.

L’immaginazione dell’artista si nutre di memoria e di desiderio, cosicchè le sue opere sono il risultato di un’attenta e delicata visualizzazione della sua personale dimensione mentale e sentimentale. Per citare le parole di P. Florenskij, in una situazione in cui la percezione del reale “si muove”, risulta inevitabile che la poesia e l’arte si rivolgano al passato ed alla memoria per raccontare la fugacità del presente.

La vita quotidiana è movimento e ansia di progettazione del futuro per mezzo di uno sguardo lungimirante. Sara Menegatti chiede di fermarsi, di mettere in discussione tutto ciò che è diventato ormai oggetto della routine per guardare verso un passato fatto di ricordi e immagini sfuocate. Lavorare sulla memoria significa estendere i confini e costruire le basi del futuro. Ambienti abbandonati e oggetti banali diventano protagonisti di sequenze fotografiche che invitano lo spettatore a non concepirli più come luoghi da vivere frettolosamente o da usare disinteressatamente, ma di collegarli ad un vissuto pregno di memoria. Le stanze ritratte nelle sue opere, così come le bambole o le scarpe, sono appartenute realmente all’artista e oggi vengono utilizzate come un pretesto per consentire a sé stessa e a chiunque altro di rievocare immagini e sensazioni di tempi lontani attraverso un viaggio che spazia dal singolare all’universale. I soggetti delle sue fotografie devono essere letti come tracce informative a proposito di eventi, sensazioni e idee appartenute al trascorso di Sara, nei quali però tutti possono riconoscersi e fare propri. Al centro della poetica di Sara c’è il ricordo del suo e di riflesso del nostro vissuto considerato come un periodo di forza da cui attingere per affrontare le insidie della vita odierna,

Reflected memories: ephemeral moments, evanescent, glimpses of life that come to mind as evidence of a past that has somehow lead to today.

The photographs by Sara Menegatti activate one’s consciousness using the evocative power of objects, environments, and silent narrators of past stories.

The artist uses the mirror to help us experience the extraordinary journey of memory. “Through the mirror” gives us access to other dimensions, places of the unconscious, dreams and fantasy. There is a subtle melancholy in the emptiness of these intimate rooms, Menegatti’s personal memories being delicately articulated. Still present in the room, though not reflected, is a pair of lone high heeled shoes, an accessory of feminine seduction. As the love in the scene disappears, so vanish the shoes from the little white bed. Yet thru this all, they reappear in memory and in the mirror. The scene captures a pure memory of love, a dreamy lightness, and a moment of suspended time.

Melancholy and romance: a poetic vision told with simple but symbolic images. Time rewinds, past and future coincide in these photographs where the mirrors magically reflect the same place but in a different time. Sara’s photographs are images of her lived past. The house, the set of the “story”, is “represented” as a symbol of family, feminine values and a place of protection from the world; yet at the same time, they hold feelings of intense love, drama, decay and abandonment.

This young girl lives her life and tells us more than even she has concretely come to understand. Once Alice’s mirror is crossed, the incoming flow of thought becomes uncontrollable. She experiences intense fear of decay, lost opportunities and the great uncertainty of life. It is here that the great existentialist themes regarding life, love and death emerge.

The imagination of the artist feeds on memory and desire. Her works are the result of a careful and delicate visualization of her personal life. As Pavel Florensky said, “in a situation where the perception of reality ‘moves’, it is inevitable for poetry and art to turn toward the past and the memory to tell the transience of the presence.”

Our daily lives are made up of constant forward motion and anxiety about the future. Sara Menegatti’s photographs encourage viewers to stop and call into question all they know of their past, routine, and confused blurred memories. Studying past memories means extending our known boundaries and building strong foundations for the future. Abandoned environments and everyday objects become the protagonists of photographic scenes. Viewers are invited to conceive these spaces not just as a place to live a rushed and fevered life, but to connect all of one’s experiences to live a life full of rich memories.The rooms and props shown in Menegatti’s works really do belong to the artist. Sara’s personal scenes and objects are used to evoke universal and common images and mixed feelings of a time long ago. We must recognize that although the subjects in her photographs are of Sara’s specific experiences, we can use these images to easily recognize ourselves and discover our own personal memories and feelings.At the center of her artistic expression, there are not only her own memories, but also her reflections of your life. She hopes her photographs will help you gain strength to withstand the exhaustive nature of modern life.

Come vincitrice del Premio gAt 2013 promosso da Artour-O, Sara Menegatti è protagonista di una mostra personale a F_AIR Florence Artist in Residence, scaturita dalle relazioni tra Artour-O e Florence University of the Arts. Artour-O e Florence University of the Arts condividono gli stessi ideali positivi riguardo l’educazione all’arte contemporanea e al supporto dei suoi giovani talenti.

BIOGRAFIASara Menegatti è nata a Ferrara nel 1988. Dopo aver preso la maturità si è iscritta all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna al corso di Decorazione, dove si è laureata nel 2011. Durante gli anni di studio ha sviluppato un interesse per la fotografia. I suoi scatti fotografici hanno come tematica la Memoria Involontaria, ‘sperimentata’ nella vita quotidiana ed evocata da oggetti e luoghi da concepire come elementi impregnati dell’essenza delle persone con i quali sono venuti in contatto. A questo tipo di ricordi non sempre le persone danno un valore, proprio per questo lei li ricrea nelle sue fotografie, bloccati e resi visibili tramite la fotografia considerata da sempre “testimone di ciò che è stato” e tramite uno specchio, elemento che accompagna sempre l’artista, diventando a volte una porta attraverso la quale ci è possibile vedere ciò che è stato, i ricordi legati a quei luoghi e quegli oggetti, e a volte incarnandosi direttamente in quei luoghi e in quegli oggetti diventando loro stessi specchi del loro ricordo. Altre sue opere hanno come tema l’Incomunicabilità e i segnali di chiusura, comportamenti e riflessi involontari che assumiamo inconsapevolmente nei confronti delle altre persone e degli ambienti che circondano costruendo delle vere e proprie barriere immaginarie.Ora sta per prendere la laurea specialistica di Fotografia Sperimentale presso il Biennio Specialistico di Fotografia, sempre presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna.

As winner of the gAt Award 2013, promoted by Artour-O, Sara Menegatti is the protagonist of a solo exhibition at F_AIR, outcome of the collaboration between Artour-O and Florence University of the Arts. Artour-O and Florence University of the Arts share the same ideals about the education towards contemporary art and the support of its young talents.

BIOGRAPHYSara Menegatti was born in Ferrara in 1988. After the high school she enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, where she graduated in 2011. She developed an interest in photography while she was still a student. The theme of her photographs is the Involuntary Memory, ‘experienced’ in everyday life and evoked by objects and places impregnated with the essence of the people with whom they came in contact. People do not always esteem these type of memories: this is why she recreates them in her images, capturing and making them visible visible through photography - always considered as “witness of what it was”, and through a mirror - a recurring element for the artist. At times the mirror becomes a door to what has been, to memories of those places and those objects; sometimes it incarnates directly those places and those objects turning themselves into mirrors of their memory. Other works by Sara Menegatti revolve around the theme of Incommunicability and the signals of closure, involuntary behaviors we unconsciously assume by building imaginary barriers towards people and environments. At the moment she is receiving her MA degree in Experimental Photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna.
