LA SPIAGGIA PERFETTA PER TE... • Natura

Per i veri amanti del mare e per coloro che sognano una giornata più avventurosa, la spiaggia ideale è Mezzavalle, una baia completamente immersa nella natura del Parco del Conero tra Ancona e Portonovo. 15 minuti di un ripido stradello nel verde conducono in una delle spiagge più suggestive del Conero. A Mezzavalle non ci sono ombrel-loni e lettini ma solo un piccolo bar/ristorante; i bagni e le docce sono pubblici.

The ideal beach for true sea lovers and for those who dream of an adventurous day is Mezzavalle, a bay completely surrounded by Conero Park, located between Ancona and Portonovo.A fifteen minute walk up a steep road surrounded by greenery brings you to one of the most evocative beaches in Conero. There are no umbrellas or sunbeds in Mezzavalle, just a small bar/restaurant; the beach has public toilets and showers.

Tra Numana e Sirolo, a nord del porticciolo turistico, raccolta in una baia naturale e sovrastata da una scogliera si trova la Spiaggia del Frate. Una spiaggia di ghiaia in parte libera ed in parte attrez-zata, un piccolo gioiello dove tra-scorrere una giornata cullati solo dal rumore del mare turchese.

In the high part of Numana, just north of the small, tourist port, we find the Spiaggia del Frate. Enclosed by a natural bay and dominated by a cliff, this bathing establishment with fine gravel, is a small jewel where you can spend the day lulled with the sounds of the turquoise sea.

Portonovo famosa per la natura incontaminata e la bellezza delle sue spiagge è immersa in una baia verde. Qui si susseguono spiagge selvagge e stabilimenti balneari attrezzati, l’arenile è in ghiaia e sassi. Alcune spiagge, per l’esposizione a particolari venti, sono diventate la meta prediletta dai surfisti.Camminando in riva al mare po-trete incontrare insolite sculture di sassi in equilibrio che ricordano primitivi totem: sono opera degli artisti di stone balance disciplina che a Portonovo ha trovato la sua patria tanto che ha ospitato il primo raduno internazionale di quest’arte.

Portonovo famous for its unspoiltnature and lovely beaches issurrounded by a green bay. Here you will find a succession of wild beaches and bathing establishments, with a pebbly, rocky shore. Some beaches are the preferred destination of surfers on account of its exposure to particular currents. Walking along the seashore you will discover unusual balanced rock sculptures which are reminiscent of primitive totem poles: they are the work of stone balance artists, a discipline which has found its home in Portonovo, so much so that the first international convention of this art form was held here.

Per gli amanti della natura / For nature lovers SIROLO:SPIAGGIA URBANI, SAN MICHELEE I SASSI NERI

Dal centro di Sirolo si può scen-dere per una strada lunga un km e raggiungere la Spiaggia Urbani che, con la sua forma a mezza-luna, si inserisce in un magnifico scenario delimitato da una grotta e una rupe di roccia bianca.Sempre a Sirolo, percorrendo il sentiero del Parco della Repubblica si arriva nella rilassante natura della Spiaggia di San Michele, un’immensa spiaggia di ghiaia fine e sassi, in parte libera e in parte attrezzata. Da qui potete poi raggiungere l’adiacente Spiaggia dei Sassi Neri il cui nome deriva da alcune rocce scu-re che si intravedono nei fondali.

From the centre of Sirolo you can descend along a one km long road which leads to Spiaggia Urbani. It has a lovely crescent moon shape, and is surrounded by exquisite scenery bordered by a cave and a cliff. Also in Sirolo, if you follow the path of the Republic Park you will reach the relaxing nature of the Spiaggia di San Michele, a wide beach with fine gravel and rocks, part wild beach and part bathing establishment. From here you can reach the adjacent Spiaggia dei Sassi Neri whose name derives from the dark pebbles which characterize it.

Per una giornata nel cuore della natura lontani dalla vita da om-brellone sono due le mete con-sigliate: la Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle che prende il nome dai bianchi faraglioni che spuntano tra le onde e l’adiacente Spiag-gia dei Gabbiani. Quest’ultima tra i suoi bianchi massi nasconde i resti della Grotta degli Schiavi dove si dice che un ammiraglio saraceno lasciasse i suoi schiavi. Entrambe sono raggiungibili solo via mare.

If you want to spend the daysurrounded by nature, far fromumbrellas and bathing establishments, we recommend two destinations: the Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle which ta-kes its name from the white sea-stacksrising out of the waves and theadjacent Spiaggia dei Gabbiani.Between its white boulders, the latter conceals the remains of the Grotta degli Schiavi where, as the story goes, a Saracen admiral sorted his slaves.Both may be reached only by sea.

Altra spiaggia particolare inca-stonata nel centro cittadino è la spiaggia del Passetto di Ancona, un’oasi naturale nascosta tra le rocce al di sotto del monumento dei caduti, a pochi passi dalle centrali vie dello shopping. Ideale per un bagno veloce in pausa pranzo e per una serata in qualche locale su palafitte.

Another unique beach set in the town centre is the Passetto di Ancona beach, a natural oasis concealed between the rocks beneath the war memorial, just a

stone’s throw from the main shopping streets. This is the ideal location for a quick swim during your lunch break or for an evening spent in a pub on stilts.

Due sono le spiagge che possono per legge ospitare i cani, di qual-siasi taglia:- La prima è un tratto di spiaggia posizionato a sinistra della foce del Fiume Musone nel lungomare nord di Porto Recanati.- La seconda si trova invece nell’estremità opposta di Porto Recanati, nel lungomare sud, all’altezza del fiume Potenza.Entrambe le spiagge sono libere e vige l’obbligo di tenere i cani al guinzaglio.

There are two beaches were dogs of any size are permitted by law:- The first is a stretch of beach located to the left of the Musone River along the north promenade of Porto Recanati.- The second is instead found at the opposite end of Porto Recanati, in the southernpromenade, parallel to the Potenza River.Both are public bea-ches and dogs be must kept on a leash.

A pochi passi dal centro di Nu-mana Alta si trova La Spiaggiola, una spiaggia attrezzata di ghiaia e fondali sabbiosi. Un luogo inti-mo e raccolto, protetto alle spalle dalle pendici del Monte Conero e affacciato su un mare particolar-mente calmo grazie agli scogli al largo che fanno da frangiflutti.Proseguendo poi verso sud si giunge a Numana Bassa, piccolo golfo, un tempo borgo di pescatori, dove sfila un vivace susseguirsi di spiagge attrezzate e libere. Ancora più a sud si trova Marcelli, una località caratterizza-ta da un tratto di costa in ghiaia e sabbia dorata lungo circa 6 km con ogni servizio dai ristoranti alle strutture sportive, ideale per bambini e famiglie.Poco prima di entrare nel centro di Porto Recanati si incontrano le spiagge di Scossici con ampie distese di ghiaia, il luogo ideale dove dedicarsi allo sport in riva al mare o per rilassarsi coccolati dal sole. Le spiagge di Porto Reca-nati, di fronte al centro cittadino, regalano una magnifica visione del Monte Conero con una co-lorata fila di stabilimenti balneari che si estende fino alle spiagge della zona Pineta a sud del fiume Potenza.

Just a stone’s throw from Numana Alta we find La Spiaggiola, a bathing establishment with a pebbly beach and sandy sea floor. This is an intimate, secluded spot, sheltered by the slopes of Mount Conero and overlooking a particularly calm sea, thanks to the offshore rocks which act as a breakwater. Continuing south we reach Numana Bassa, a small gulf once fishing village, with a lively succession of bathing establishments and wild beaches.Further south we find Marcelli, an area with a stretch of coastline approximately 6 kilometres in length, characterized by pebbles and golden sand. This beach is ideal for families and children as it has every service, from restaurants to sports facilities.A short distance from the centre of Porto Recanati we find the beaches of Scossici with wide stretches of pebbles. This is the ideal location to engage in sports along the seashore or relax in the sunshine. The beaches in front of Porto Recanatigrant a magnificent view of Mount Conero with a row of brightly-coloured bathing establishments which extend all the way to the Pinewood, in the area south of the river Potenza.

Today Osimo, an elegant city ofPicentine origin, is a treasure of artand architecture recounting its noble past through a vast itinerary ofchurches and monuments. This cityhas also spread underground, hidden in a secret world which was dug, amidst caves and tunnels, out of sandstone. Another famous hypogeal city isCamerano with its magnificent grottos.

Each place between the hills of Conero is full of potential waiting to be discovered. You can select religious itineraries which lead you all the way to the Holy House of the Madonna of Loreto passing by the magnificent Osimo Duomo, or choose to go on a historical-artistic tour amongst themuseums and architectural gems found in these hills. Poco lontano da Sirolo, nella rigogliosa natura del Parco del Conero si stendono i circa 70 ettari del Conero Golf Club.Un percorso campionato a 18 buche e un campo executive a 5 buche avvolti da un ampio bosco di querce, tamerici, ciliegi e ginestre. Not far from Sirolo, in the luxuriant greenery of the Conero Park, we find the Conero Golf Club: an expanse measuring approximately 70 acres.There is an 18-hole championship course and a 5-hole executive course surrounded by a large forest of oaks, tamarisks, cherry trees and Scotchbroom. ORE 19 DI VENERDÌ: aperitivo a Piazza del Papa ad Ancona e cena in uno dei tanti locali cittadini per provare lo stoccafisso. In estate non potete perdervi l’emozione di ce-nare letteralmente in riva al mare in qualche locale di Portonovo.

SABATO MATTINA: tour del centro cittadi-no di Ancona, tra chiese e musei per finire poi la mattinata con un po’ di shopping, pranzo in una trattoria d’altri tempi e via verso i paesi della costa.

SABATO POMERIGGIO: tra Sirolo, Numana e Porto Recanati, una passeggiata tra i vicoli dei centri storici e poi un po’ di sole in spiaggia. Serata al mare con cena di pesce e passeggiata sul lungomare.

DOMENICA MATTINA: verso l’entroterra, una visita alle città sotterranee di Camerano e Osimo per finire nel primo pomeriggio a visitare il Santuario di Loreto.

È proprio dal porto che ha avuto inizio la storia di Ancona, la sua posizione da protagonista negli scambi tra oriente ed occidente le ha fatto guadagnare l’appellativo di Porta d’Oriente. Crocevia di genti e culture, del cui passaggio è rimasto un segno nelle numerose opere artistiche che fanno delle strade di questa città un vero e proprio museo a cielo aperto. L’arco di Traiano è la porta che conduce all’Ancona più antica, salendo verso il colle Guasco si incontra la Cattedrale di San Ciriaco, chiesa medievale unica in Italia per il suo stile che fonde arte romanica, gotica e bizantina. Sorta sulla sommità dell’antica acropoli greca, sulle rovine di un tempio dedicato ad Afrodite, protettrice dei navigato-ri, dall’alto continua a vegliare sul mare offrendo uno dei panorami più suggestivi di Ancona. The story of Ancona starts with its harbour. Its position was strategic to trade between the East and the West. In fact, that is precisely why it was called the Gateway to the East.It represents a blend of people and cultures, whose presence is stillevident throughout the numerous works of art that make the streets of this city a real open air museum. The Arch of Trajan is the gateway that leads to the most ancient part of Ancona. By going up towards Guasco hill, one can see the of San Ciriaco Cathedral, a medieval church with no equals in Italy in terms of its style.In fact, it represents a blend ofRomanesque, Gothic and Byzantine art. It was built on top of the ancient Greek Acropolis, or, more precisely, on top of the remains of a temple dedica-ted to Aphrodite, the patron of sailors. From the top, it continues to watch over the sea while offering one of the most beautiful scenic views of Ancona. The major town’s museums are also worthy of being mentioned, and include the National Archeological Museum of Marche, which provides a succession of works that helped to piece together the entire regional history in a most absolute manner.

Scendendo dalle bianche e imponenti scalinate del Passetto si arriva nella spiaggia cittadina di scogli e sassi, da qui si può proseguire in una suggestiva passeggiata lungo la colorata fila di grotte dei pescatori. Vere e proprie grotte scavate nella roccia, un tempo rifugio per le imbarcazioni, oggi sono ogget-to di colorate personalizzazioni che ne fanno delle abitazioni estive. Pesce fresco e pennichella pomeridiana sono gli ingredienti dell’estate dei “grottaroli”... e la sera, dal mare la costa diventa un firmamento illuminato dalle fitte lucine delle grotte di Ancona.

Numana preserves its seaside origins from above, where a network of narrow streets embrace the colourful fishermen’s homes while unwinding over an extensive scenic view of the sea. There is a terrace that offers a unique view of the entire coastline of the Conero Riviera. It is possible to descend towards the harbourfrom the centre of the town bystrolling down theancient step street, which was used by the fishermen every morning at dawn. Here lies the lowest part of Numana, which is also the most modern and lively part of the town: full of bars andestablishments.

The story of Numana begins in ancient times, so ancient that there are records of human settlements in this area that date back to the Neolithic era. Evidence of this ancient past is preserved at the state Antiquarium, where prestigious

archaeological findings are exposed forall to see.The traditions of this village are tied to the miraculous Crucifix that is preservedin thehomonymous sanctuary. According to tradition, it was made by those who affixed the body of

Christ onto the cross. In any event,it still remains a work of great artistic and historical value with Byzantine characteristics that go beyondthe legend.

An ancient f isherman village on the Adriatic Sea immersed in the vegetationof the woodlands of the Park of Conero.

Le spiagge e le acque di Numanada anni vengono premiate con iltitolo di Bandiera Blu europea per la pulizia e la vivibilità che le contraddistingue. Un lungomare che dalla parte alta della città si snoda fino a Marcelli declinando litorali diversi adatti a qualsiasi esigenza. Dalle spiagge selvag-ge e nascoste delle insenature del monte Conero, alle ampie distese di ghiaia degli stabi-limenti balneari attrezzati con tutti i servizi.

The beaches and waters

of Numana have been

rewarded with the

many years now thanks to

their cleanliness and the

from others. The seaside promenade,

which unwinds to Marcelli from the upper

part of the city, reveals different coastal

from the wild beaches that are hidden

by the nooks of Mount Conero, to the

Numana conserva la sua origine marinara nella parte alta, dove un fitto reticolo di viuzze abbraccia le colorate casette dei pescatori e si apre poi in un ampio belvedere affacciato sul mare. Una terrazza dal panorama unico che spazia su tutta la costa della Riviera del Conero. Dal centro si scende verso il porto attraverso l’antica via a gradoni che i pescatori per-correvano ogni mattina all’alba. Qui c’è la parte bassa di Numana, quella più moderna e vivace, ricca di locali e stabilimenti.

La storia di Numana ha inizio in tempi remoti, tanto che già nel Neolitico si contavano insediamenti umani. Testimo-nianze di questo antico passato sono conservate nell’Antiquarium statale dove sono esposti reperti archeologici di grande pregio. Le tradizioni di questa città sono spesso legate al miracoloso Crocifisso, conser-vato nell’omonimo Santuario.Secondo la tradi-zione fu eseguito da coloro che de-posero il corpo di Cristo dalla croce, in ogni caso al di là della leggenda rimane un’opera di notevole pregio artistico e storico con le sue fattezze di stile bizantino.

amanti della cucina di mare, non potete non godervi una gustosa cenetta nei numerosi ristoranti sul lungomare o nel pittoresco centro storico. Da provare: i sardoncini“a scottadito”... sardoncini freschissimi passati in un tritodi aglio, pan grattato e prezzemolo e cotti alla brace.

If you are visiting Numana and love seafood cuisine you cannot miss out on a tasty dinner in one of the many small restaurants on the promenade or in the picturesque old town centre. Worth trying: European anchovies “a scottadito”… freshly caught European anchovies coated with ground garlic, bread crumbs, parsley and char-grilled.

“AL LEVARDELLASCIABEGASI CONOSCELA PESCA”

Tutti i martedì dei mesi estivi la Pro Loco di Numana, con la col-laborazione dei Traghettatori del Conero, organizza delle escursio-ni mattutine in mare per assistere allo spettacolo dell’alba. Si parte alle 5.30, si costeggiano le spiag-ge ai piedi del Monte Conero e in compagnia di cappuccino e brioches appena sfornate si as-siste al meraviglioso spettacolo del sole che albeggia sull’az-zurro del mare. Poi tappa alla spiaggia delle Due Sorelle per il primo bagno della giornata.

Numana, città di pescatori, negli anni passati era famosa per la pesca con la sciabiga. Una tra le più antiche tecniche di pesca del Mediterraneo, utilizzava del-le reti e poteva essere praticata anche dai non professionisti.

Some years ago the fishing town of Numana was famous for its trawling. One of the oldest methods of fishing, it made use of nets and could be practiced even by non-professionals.

QUANDO L’ALBA SI COLORAWhen dawnchanges hue

Every Tuesday during the summer months, the Numana Pro Loco (organization for the promotion of the territory),in partnership with the Conero Ferrymen, organizes morningexcursions by sea to take in thebeauties of the dawn. The ferry departs at 5:30 a.m., skirting the beaches at the foot of Mount Conero. Enjoy a cappuccino and freshly baked brioches as you take in the glorious sight of the sun rising over the azure sea. After sunrise there’s a stop-over at the Due Sorelle beach for your first dip of the day.

Nella centralissima piazza di Porto Recanati sorge il medievaleCastello Svevo, costruito come difesa dagli attacchi dei pirati, all’interno delle sue mura si svolge-va l’intera vita cittadina. Nell’ampio cortile è ospitata l’arena intitolata al tenore recanatese Beniamino Gigli che durante l’estate diviene il palcoscenico di un ampio carnet di eventi culturali. A pochi passi dal centro cittadino si trova un sito archeologico che con i suoi numerosi reperti ha riportato in vita l’antica città romana di Potentia, una testimonianza delle origini por-torecanatesi come colonia romana. Ogni estate, durante il Palio di S. Giovanni, per le strade del cen-tro diverse ciurme di “sciabegotti” (pescatori con la sciabiga) si sfida-no in una corsa con ceste di vimini colme di pesce. Una festa che rievoca un passato in cui i pescatori correvano per essere i primi ad arrivare al mercato.

Una vacanza ecologica alla scoperta del territorio: Porto Recanati si caratterizza per l’ampio spazio dedicato ai percorsi cicla-bili. Tratti che si dispiegano nei pressi del lungomare più movimentato e si inoltrano poi nelle campa-gne circostanti alla scoperta di luoghi più raccolti ed immersi nella natura, proseguendo quindi alla volta di Loreto.

In the central square of PortoRecanati, there is a medieval castle called Castello Svevo. Originally built to defend the town from pirates, the inhabitants lived within its walls. In the large courtyard, there is an arena that was named after the tenor from Recanati, Beniamino Gigli.During the summer, this arena becomes the perfect setting for many cultural events. A few steps away from the town centre, there is an archaeological site where many findings helped to bring the ancient Roman city of Potentia back to life. Evidence that Porto Recanati was, originally, a Roman colony. The Palio of Saint John is one of the most popular events in Porto Recanati. Every summer, along the streets of the old town centre, various crews of “sciabegotti” (fishermen who fish with a trawl) compete in a race holding wicker baskets laden with fish. This is a festival commemorating a time when fishermen would race to be the first to arrive at the market.

Alla periferia di Porto Recanati sorge una vera e propria cittàromana dove si possono respi-rare le atmosfere dell’antica Roma. Si tratta dell’anticoinsediamento di Potentia del quale si sono conservati molti reperti statuari, oggi conservati a Castello Svevo, e i resti dell’anti-co tempio dedicato a Giove.

In the outskirts of Porto Recanati rises a veritable roman city where one can take in the flavour of ancient Rome.We are talking about the ancient settlement of Potentia, with its

well-preserved statues which aretoday house in the Svevo Castle, and the remains of the ancient temple dedicated to Jupiter.

Nelle campagne di Porto Recana-ti, in zona Scossicci, nascosta tra il verde sorge la Chiesetta della Banderuola. Eretta nel luogo dove si dice sostò la Santa Casa prima di essere deposta nella sua attuale sede a Loreto. Il nome dato alla chiesa trova origine dalla bandiera che indicava ai marinai la via verso la Madonna di Loreto.

In the countryside surrounding Porto Recanati, near Scossicci, hidden in an oasis of green rises the Chiesetta della Banderuola (Small Church of the Flag). It was erected on the spot where it is said that the Holy House once stopped before it was placed in its current headquarters in Loreto. The church was named after the flag which showed sailors the way to the Madonna of Loreto.

Il Santuario di Loreto è la maestosa costruzione che in tre secoli, grazie alla collaborazione di una schiera di valenti artisti tra cui il Bramante e il Sansovino, è sorta per accogliere i pellegrini in un avvolgente abbraccio. Una costruzione tanto imponente è stata edificata per custodire “come una perla preziosa” le mura della Santa Casa di Maria di Nazaret che secondo la tradizione, venne prodigiosamente trasportata in volo dagli Angeli fino a Loreto. All’interno di questa modesta di-mora è anche conservata la statua della “Madonna Nera” protettrice degli aviatori e al centro della devozione mariana.

The Sanctuary of Loreto is a majestic construction that was built over three centuries to welcome pilgrims with a warm embrace. It was built with the help of a series of talented artists, including Bramante and Sansovino. There is an imposing construction that,”like a precious pearl”, was built to provide shelter to the walls of the Holy House of Mary of Nazareth.According to legend, it wasmiraculously flown to the cityof Loreto by angels. Cartesio venne a Loreto per ringraziare la Madonna delle scoperte fatte e chiedere di continuare a farne ancora, Cristo-foro Colombo mandò a Loreto un suo marinaio a ringraziare la Madonna di essere sopravvissuto a una grande burrasca, molti sono i pellegrini famosi che sono passati da Loreto: Galileo Galilei, Casanova, Alfieri e Mozart.

Ancora oggi il pellegrinaggio a Loreto resta un’esperienza sug-gestiva e di grande spiritualità, il più celebre e sentito è quello che ogni anno a giugno parte a piedi da Macerata.

Descartes came to Loreto to thank the Madonna for the discoveries he had made and petition that he continue to make more; Christopher Columbus sent one of his sailors to thank the Madonna for sparing his life during a storm, many famous pilgrims passed by Loreto. Galileo Galilei, Casanova, Alfieri, Mozart and still others are all remembered on a marble slab in the corridor leading to the vestry. Even today a pilgrimage to Loreto is an evocative and deeply spiritual experience. The most celebrated and famous pilgrimage takes place every year in June on foot from Macerata.

Ripercorrere i passi delle guar-die nei camminamenti di ronda.Per difendere il Santuario della Santa Casa dalle incursioni dei pirati, vennero costruiti dei ba-luardi difensivi che hanno reso il Santuario un’inespugnabile citta-della della fede. I camminamenti di ronda sono visitabili per poter ripercorrere oggi gli stessi passi delle antiche guardie medievali. Il percorso dura circa 45 minuti e offre una vista unica sull’intera Riviera del Conero.

Bulwarks were built to defend the Holy House’s Sanctuary from pirate raids and thanks to them the Sanctuary became an impregnable citadel of the faith. The chemin de ronde may be visited to retrace the steps of the medieval guards of old. The route lasts approximately 45 minutes and offers a unique view of the entire Conero Riviera.

The city of Osimo has a double life which even continues underground, stories and legends are narrated even there. A maze of tunnels, burrows and underground passageways dug out of the sandstone which extends for kilometres under the town. A labyrinth all to be discovered which provokes imaginings and affects the visitor’s imagination. The Grotte del Cantinone, adjacent to the IAT Office, serviceable by the tourist, were modified and used in Medieval times, and hold interestingfigures and engravings of a spiritual character (info and reservations Toll Free Number 800228800).San Giuseppe da Copertino, Osimo’s Patron Saint, is also the protector of students. Inside the Basilica which is dedicated to him, its crypt holds his remains, are still visible the small rooms in which he spent his final years. These contain, besides the Saints personal objects, many of the ex-votos left by those who obtained his intercession.

Enveloped by a vast, imposingcity wall, Osimo from atop a knoll dominates the Musone and Aspio valleys. The panorama from the Public Park on Via Saffi is breath-taking, to say the least. Ogni scorcio, ogni costruzione del centro storico sussurra fatti e aneddoti legati a questo prezioso bagaglio storico: dalle rinomate mura e Fonte Magna alle statue acefale romane - all’origine dell’appellativo “Senzatesta” per indicare gli Osimani - fino alleimportanti sue chiese, tra le qualieccelle la Cattedrale di San Leopardo, dallo stile romanico-gotico, con una cripta (XII sec.) ed un Battistero assolutamente da visitare.

All’interno della Basilica a lui de-dicata, la cui cripta ne conserva le spoglie, sono ancora visitabili le stanzette in cui visse i suoi ultimi anni. Queste, oltre ad oggetti personali del Santo, contengono molti degli ex voto lasciati da chi ne ha ottenuto l’intercessione.

Every glimpse, every construction of the historical centre whispers facts and anecdotes tied to its precious historical baggage: from the renowned walls and Fonte Magna to the acephalous Roman statues - the origin of using the nickname “Senzatesta” (“Headless”) to refer to the people of Osimo - to its important churches, among which stands out the Cattedrale di San Leopardo, of a Romanesque-Gothic style, with a 12th century crypt and a Baptistery, all of which are an absolute must see.


Dedicato a S. Leopardo, primo vescovo di Osimo, l’edificio in pietra dei secoli XII-XIII, dalle forme romanico-gotiche, sorge su una primitiva chiesa del V sec. e sopra un preesistente tempio pagano. Degni di nota sono i due preziosi portali lavorati in pietra,la lunetta a destra di questi,il grande rosone adornato.Di particolare fascino è l’antico crocifisso in legno custodito al suo interno che pare essere stato protagonista di un vero e proprio miracolo: nel 1796, alla presenza di oltre cento testimoni, avrebbe spalancato occhi e bocca. La cripta (XII sec.), vero sancta sanctorum, custodisce i sarcofagi dei principali vescovi e martiri osimani.

Dedicated to S. Leopardo, first bishop of Osimo, the Romanesqueand Gothic stone building of the twelfth-thirteenth century was developed on a primitive church of the fifth century, rising above a preexistent pagan temple. Noteworthy are the two precious stone portals, the lunette to their right and the big decorated rose window. The ancient and particularly fascinating wooden crucifix inside the church seems to have been touched by a real miracle: it is said to have opened its eyes and mouth in 1796, in the presence of over a hundred witnesses. The crypt (twelfth century), which is the real holy of holies, contains the sarcophagi of the major bishops and martyrs of Osimo.

In the atrium of Osimo’s Town Hall you are greeted by a parade of acephalus statues of roman origin. This is the source of the monikergiven to the inhabitants of Osimo:“headless”. There are manyhypotheses regarding this unusualdecapitation halfway betweenhistory and legend.

In un paese illuminato solo dalle luce di lanterne, oltre 200 confratelli incappucciati e vestiti di nero conducono il cata-falco del Cristo Morto per le vie del centro. Questo emozionante momento è accompagnato dal suono sordo e un po’ sinistro delle battistangole, uno strumento costituito da una tavoletta con anelli di ferro.

Camerano is the birth village of the painter, Carlo Maratti, who left a significant artistic heritage behind. This heritage is preserved and exposed in the Palazzo Comunale, the municipal hall. Maratti also conferred prestige to the local church of San Nicolò of Bari by transferring the remains of Saint Faustina, which were previously preserved in the Roman catacombs, to this location. The third century church of San Francesco is also artistically and architecturally prestigious. The Saint had it built when he was in Ancona during one of his trip to the East.One may ascend the Bell tower and enjoy the incomparable panorama.

CASTELFIDARDO SORGE ALL’INCROCIO DELLE VALLATE DEL FIUME ASPIO EMUSONE, SU UNA COLLINA, IMMERSA NEL RILASSANTE VERDE DI UNA SELVA UNICA IN EUROPA PER IL SUO ECOSISTEMA.

Castelf idardo is located where the valleys of the Aspio and Musone Rivers meet. It is immersed in the midst of the soothing vegetation of a European forest that is unique for its ecosystem.

Dall’alto di una collina un monumento unico nel suo genere, realizzato in bronzo dallo scultore Vito Pardo, commemora la battaglia risorgimen-tale che nel 1860, sullo sfondo di Castelfidardo, ha visto il contrapporsi dell’esercito piemontese e di quello pontificio. La pietà dei cittadini “castellani” li indusse a costruire un Sacrario dove potessero riposare, in una distesa rasserenante di verde, le spoglie dei soldati dell’uno e dell’altro schieramento.

The top of a hill, is home to a monument made of bronze by the sculptor Vito Pardo, which is one of a kind, in memory of the battle of the Risorgimento that took place in 1860: a battle between the army of the Piedmont region and that of the Papal States. The “castellani”, or the castle’s citizens’ piety led them to build a sacred place where the remains of all the soldiers who lost their lives could be laid down to rest in the midst of a serene area full of vegetation.

Castelfidardo è famosa perla produzione artigianaledella fisarmonica, uno dei simboli della musica italiana nel mondo. Il Museo Internazio-nale della Fisarmonica allestito all’interno del Palazzo Comunale ripercorre le tappe della storia di questo strumento e delle mae-stranze artigiane attraverso una rievocazione precisa e anche un po’ nostalgica.

Castelfidardo is renowned for its handmade accordions, one of the symbols of Italian music throughout the world. The International Museum of Accordions is set up inside the Palazzo Comunale, the town hall, and exhibits the historical stages of this instrument and of the artisans’ expertise through a realistic and nostalgic commemoration.

The town of Ostra Vetere was built in the inland areas of the Marche, more precisely,where the hills follow a harmonious succession of up and down curves.

L’impianto urbanistico a terrazze del centro urbano di Ostra Vetere offre immagini e richiami suggestivi: svelte scalinate salgono a raggiun-gere caratteristici scorci. Il profilo della città è tracciato dalla Chiesa di S. Maria di Piazza che con le sue alte guglie svetta sull’intero abitato. Una costruzione che, seppure relati-vamente recente, col suo campanile slanciato e la elegante cupola neo-gotica, propone un colpo d’occhio spettacolare e di irripetibile effetto. Nell’ex convento delle Clarisse è conservata una collezione d’arte che reca testimonianza di uno splendore non dimenticato: quello

dell’antica abbazia benedettina e della chiesa di S. Fran-cesco, un tempo ubicata nell’area di Piazza della Libertà e demolita all’inizio del Novecento.

Maria di Piazza, which dominates the entire

town with its tall spires. It is a construction

that, though relatively recent, offers a

spectacular and unique view thanks to its

soaring bell tower and elegant neo-gothic

dome. An art collection that bears

evidence of unforgotten splendours

is preserved in the former convent

of the Poor Clares: that of the ancient

Benedictine abbey and of the church of S.

Francesco which once stood in Piazza della

Libertà, liberty square, but which were

later demolished at the beginning of the

tenth century.

This medieval town nestles amongst the soft hills, where nature displays shades that range from bright green to variousgradations of yellow providing a ref ined array of colours.

Come in un antico castello medie-vale il cuore della città è avvolto attorno ad una cinta muraria che si inerpica per erte salite, fino al suo cuore: la Rocca. Costruita dagli anconetani nel 1454-55 per difen-dere la loro posizione di dominio sui territori circostanti, la Rocca di Offa-gna rappresenta un notevole esem-pio di architettura militare. Oggi al suo interno è ospitata una mostra di armi antiche. Da non perdere il Museo della Liberazione e il Museo di Scienze Naturali Luigi Paolucci con le sue numerose collezioni.

Like in an ancient medieval castle,

a wall that goes up a very steep hill

until it reaches the centre surrounds

the heart of the town: the Rocca,

the rock it was built by the people of

Ancona, between 1454-55, to defend their

dominant position over the surrounding

territories. The Rocca of Offagna

represents a significant example of military

architecture. Today inside is own structure

is hosted an ancient weapon show. Not to

lose the Museum of the Liberation and the

Museum of Natural Sciences Luigi Paolucci

with its numerous collections.

C’era un tempo in cui diversi comuni sudditi della città di Ancona ne costituivano una corona serrata di fortificazioni difensive, tra questi Agugliano si distinse sempre per grande fedeltà. Poco rimane della pianta originale del borgo, si può invece visitare Castel d’Emilio, antico castello con torre a pianta quadrata e con una cinta muraria ancora ben conservata. Agugliano è celebre anche per il suo gelato artigianale che ogni anno a giugno diviene protagonista di un goloso Festival che ospita maestri gelatai da tutto il mondo.

Once upon a time various municipalities,

which were vassals to the city of Ancona,

formed a circlet of defensive fortifications.

Among these, Agugliano always

distinguished itself for its great

faithfulness. Little remains of the original

town layout, however you can visit

Castel d’Emilio, an ancient castle with

a square-shaped tower and well-preserved

surrounding walls. Agugliano is also

renowned for its homemade ice-cream.

Each year in June, ice-cream takes the

centre stage at a delicious Festival

attended by the best ice-cream makers

in the world.

La particolare posizione di Camerata Picena, su un’altura e nei pressi del fiume Esino, ne ha fatto una vera e propria fortezza naturale che da piccolo borgo si trasformò in castello. Al centro di un impianto di mura circolari mantiene intatta la forma del nucleo originario, strut-turandosi come un classico borgo di poggio. Camerata Picena faceva parte del sistema di fortificazioni difensive del contado di Ancona con altri borghi vicini, tra cui anche

il Castello del Cassero.

Camerata Picena’s strategic location,

on top of a hill near the Esino River, made

it a natural fortress. In fact, it started as a

small village before being transformed into

a castle. The castle emerges from the

centre of a circular wall system.

It managed to maintain its original nucleic

form even though it is structured like a

classic hilltop village.

Tra gli eventi da non perdere a Polverigi: Inteatro, la rassegna internazionale di teatro contemporaneo nella splendida cornice di Villa Nappi e la Festa delle Streghe, un fine settimana di incanti e magie che popola il borgo di streghe e creature spaventose.

Santa Maria Nuova al centro della provincia di Ancona, a ridosso di un colle, pur avendo origini antichissime risalenti alla prei-storia, ha trovato la sua attuale ubicazione solo a partire dal XV secolo. Suggestive testimonian-ze dal passato di questo borgo sono state rinvenute in diversi siti archeologici; in località Pie-trolone sono stati ritrovati resti di un edicola funeraria e di una villa decorata entrambe di epoca romana.

A town enclosed by the walls of an ancient castle, affectionately called “Roccolo” (bird snare) by its inhabitants due to its round shape.The Church of the Holy Sacrament, whose style falls somewhere between the Romanesque and Gothic, houses works of great artistic value and entire pictoral cycles. Some events worth attending in Polverigi: Inteatro, the international festival of contemporary theatre held in the majestic setting of Villa Nappi and the Festival of Witches, a weekend of enchantments and magic which fills the town with witches and frightening creatures.

Santa Maria Nuova is in the centre of the province of Ancona. It lies behind a hill and its origins date back to prehistoric times. This town settled in its present location only after the fifteenth century. Suggestive evidence relating to the past of this town was found in various archaeological sites; in Pietrolone, the remains of a funerary shrine and of a villa, which were both decorated with element.

DAL MARE DELLA RIVIERA DEL CONERO AI MONTI SIBILLINI, DALLE CITTÀ D’ARTE AI BORGHI CARATTERISTICI DELL’ENTROTERRA, UN’OFFERTA COSÌ AMPIA DACREARE QUASI L’IMBARAZZO DELLA SCELTA.

There is an extensive selection from which to choose: from the Riviera to the Sibillini Mountains, from the artisticcities to the characteristic inland villages.

Nelle immediate vicinanze della Riviera del Conero, sulla vetta di un colle sorge la Recanati che ha dato i natali al poeta Giacomo Leopardi e che ha fatto da scenario alla sua pro-

duzione poetica. Sono visitabili i luoghi leopardiani, il Palazzo e l’annessa biblioteca che conta più di 12.000 volumi. Ma anche il Colle de “L’infinito” che da tanta parte il guardo esclude, i resti dell’antica torre di Sant’Agostino che ha ispirato “Il passero solita-rio” e la piazzuola de “Il sabato del villaggio”.

Le Grotte di Frasassi, a circa 60 km da Ancona, costituiscono un percorso sotterraneo di grande fascino. Un mondo rovesciato, fatto di ambienti suggestivi e ricchi di straordinarie concrezioni, dove il silenzio è rotto solo dallo stillicidio delle gocce d’acqua che rende il complesso vivo ed in continua evoluzione. Le grotte sono aperte al pubblico durante tutto l’anno.

Urbino, dichiarata dall’UNESCO patrimonio dell’umanità, è una delle capitali del Rinascimento italiano. Ogni angolo di questa città ha qualcosa da raccontare del suo passato, in particolare della raffinata cultura che in questo contesto si è formata. Si-curamente il monumento che più rappresenta Urbino e che già di lontano ne connota la fisionomia, è il Palazzo Ducale con l’annessa Galleria Nazionale delle Marche.

Altra città di incantevole bellezza è Ascoli Piceno, nessuno come Jean Paul Sartre poteva meglio sintetizzarne l’essenza con questa felice definizione: “Una passeggiata per le strade della città vecchia ascolana è come lo sfogliare a caso un volume di storia dell’arte e avere la fortuna di incontrare le illustrazioni più rappresentative e espressive dei vari periodi dell’arte italiana”.

Impossibile non citare tra le meraviglie delle Marche una catena montuosa come quella dei Sibillini, i “monti azzurri” cantati dal Leopardi che, oltre ad offrire un paesaggio naturale di assoluta magnificenza, fanno da sfondo a centri urbani che sono perle di arte e cultura.

Macerata con la sua arena Sferisterio nei mesi estivi offre un meraviglioso scenario per una prestigiosa stagione lirica sotto il cielo stellato.

Recanati standing on top of a hill near the Conero Riviera was the birth place of the famous poet, Giacomo Leopardi and home to a large part of his poetic literary works. It is now possible to visit the places that belonged to Leopardi, such as his Palace and its adjoining library, which contains more than 12,000 volumes. But, there is also the hill of “L’infinito”, the infinite hill, where for some reason our curiosity excludes the remains of the ancient tower of Sant’Agostino, which inspired “Il passero solitario”, the lonelysparrow, and the location of “il sabato del villaggio”, the town’s Saturday.

Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Urbino is one of the capitals of the Italian Renaissance. Every corner of this city has something to recount about its past or of the refined culture that took shape within its setting. Certainly, the monument that best represents Urbino and whose structure can be seen from afar is the DucalePalace and the adjoining National Gallery of Marche.

This is also a city of fascinating beauty. No one could have better summed up the essence of Ascoli Piceno than Jean Paul Sartre with his delightful definition: “Walking through the streets of the old town of Ascoli is like leafing randomly through the pages of a volume on the history of art and having the chance to see the most representative and expressive illustrations of the various periods of Italian art”.

It is impossible not to mention the Sibillini mountain chain amongst the wonders of the Marche region: Monti azzurri, the blue mountains, as sung by Leopardi, offer natural sceneries of sheer beauty and provide the perfect background to the urban centres: little pearls of art and culture.
