1• In March 1993, the artificial feeding and hydration of 22-

year-old Tony Bland was withdrawn after nearly four years, during which he had been in a persistent vegetative state and shown no sign of improvement. Andrew Devine, aged 26 at the time, suffered similarly and was later diagnosed as being in a persistent vegetative state, but in March 1997 – a month short of eight years – it was reported that he had emerged from the condition and was now able to communicate using a touch-sensitive pad. Thus, Tony Bland was the final victim.

• Jon-Paul Gilhooley was the youngest victim. He had died aged 10. It is said that it was his death that inspired his cousin, a famous footballer, to reach the heights that he did in his career.

• What caused the deaths of Bland and Gilhooley?

2 ( bigger pic on next slide)• Due to his desire for accuracy, X added the logo of a real-life airline, Y, to

the crash debris in one of his comics. This upset Y and a representative complained to X about the adverse publicity that they might suffer, arguing, "It's scandalous, none of our aircraft has ever crashed. You have done us a considerable wrong." Y had cooperated closely with X, facilitating his research by providing voluminous reading material, contemporary photographs, and film footage of India and Nepal, especially of Delhi and Kathmandu. The crashed aircraft's tail number remained "VT", the correct country code, but X agreed to change the airline logo in the published edition to the fictional Sari-Airways.

4• In 2010, a poster using the handle Snowqueens Icedragon

posted a Twilight fanfic called “Master of the Universe” on a Twilight fansite. Brief description of the story reads:

• “When her friend is too ill to attend a vital job interview, Bella Swan takes her place and meets multi-millionaire CEO Edward Cullen for the first time. Cullen takes an interest in her and introduces her to realms of desire she had never thought possible.”

• As the story became popular, its writer pulled it off the internet. Who is Snowqueens Icedragon? OR What did this piece of fan-fiction later develop into?

9• This is Virginia Wade, a British tennis great, criticising a certain

appointment.

• "I thought it was initially a joke. There’s not quite the same intensity about him as maybe a year ago. Having Lendl there really made him think, ‘I’ve got him watching me so I better be absolutely full tilt all the time’.It’s hard to read him. Appointing X was a total shock, I thought they were all fooling around. I think again he’s maybe trying to mess with everybody. She was a great player, she’s a great person. I think she was a little fragile mentally because she had the capabilities of beating everybody. She’s laidback, she’s a very nice, mature person. But I can’t work it out at all. You like to try to get behind people’s thinking but I can’t really with this one. You try to see what somebody’s going to offer that player. Unless he just needs somebody there to say ‘Well done’, which is possible, too. As a player you need somebody to endorse you sometimes and not try to change anything.”

10• The X theory about Y states that ____(1)__ is just a figment of Cameron's

imagination, similar to the plot of X, and Sloane is a girl Cameron secretly loves but hasn't ever interacted with before. Sloane's boyfriend is ___(1)____, again similar to the plot of X where the narrator is able to interact with the girl of his dreams only by becoming ____(2)_____.

• Part of the reason the three characters can see so much of Chicago in less than one day is that Cameron is alone, just imagining it all. This theory would also explain the more fantastic aspects of the film, like how the entire city ralles around the 'sick' _____(1)_____.

• Some critics also argue that X is an unoffcial sequel to Y and that Cameron and _______(1)____ of Y are actually the narrator and ______(2)______ in X. They say that Cameron still has unresolved issues with his life and they manifest themselves in more violent ways in X.

13. These are the characters of a show called The Honeymooners. What famous TV show did they inspire?

Ralph Kramden: He is frustrated by his lack of success, and often develops get-rich-quick-schemes. Ralph is very short tempered, frequently resorting to bellowing, insults and hollow threats. Well hidden beneath the many layers of bluster however, is a soft-hearted man who loves his wife and is devoted to his best pal. He enjoys bowling, playing pool and being a member in the Loyal Order of Raccoon Lodge.

Alice Kramden : Ralph's patient, level-headed but sharp-tongued wife of 15 years. She often finds herself bearing the brunt of Ralph's insults, which she returns with biting sarcasm.

Edward Norton: Ralph's best friend (and upstairs neighbour). He is considerably more good-natured than Ralph, but nonetheless trades insults with him on a regular basis. Ed often gets mixed up in Ralph's schemes, and his carefree and rather dimwitted nature usually results in raising Ralph's ire, while Ralph often showers him with verbal abuse and throws him out of the apartment when Ed irritates him.

Trixie Norton: Ed's wife and Alice's best friend. She did not appear on every episode and had a less developed character, though she is shown to be bossy towards her husband.

• The Germans sometimes refer to the red card as "Arschkarte" which literally translates to 'ass card'. This came from a practice of football referees to keep the yellow card in their shirt breast pocket and the red card in the rear pocket of their pants. Why did the referees do this?

Page 123: Roobaroo spent finals
Page 124: Roobaroo spent finals

16

• Back in the days of black-and-white TV, the only way viewers could differentiate between the yellow and red cards was the fact that the referees drew the cards from different pockets

• “"Raj bhai proposed Sachin's name to us in that meeting. Two of my mates felt he was too young to take on Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. But I countered them saying if Ian Craig can play at 17, Hanif Mohammad can play at 18, why not Tendulkar at 16? After all he was much better than all of them? year old daughter. According to X, his daughter is his biggest critic and she does not like any of his films since they have only "policemen, people getting beaten up, etc". X even dedicated the film to his daughter, who wanted him to make "song-and-dance" films.

• Curiously, X's inspiration in real life, Y, also made a 3-D fantasy movie in 2011 after his wife told him "Why don't you make a film our daughter can see for once?". The movie is based on a children's book, written by Brian Selznick, that Y was reading to his daughter one night.

• "I thought, wouldn't it be nice to make a movie she could see, or that we could see together. Just watching her turn the pages of the book (which has 284 pictures), I knew that people would respond...I don't consider it a children's movie. I think it's a movie children should see with their parents. Then talk about it," says Y.

the 1993 Academey Awards for her role in a lightweight comedy, prevailing over Miranda Richardson, Joan Plowright, Vanessa Redgrave and Judy Davis.

• One critic explained it by saying "Every voter thought Vanessa Redgarve was a shoo-in and gave X a 'pity-vote' and, well...she ended up winning".

• Others went even furthur and argued that the presenter, Jack Palance, had had erroneously called out the wrong name because he was unable to read the printing on the card inside the envelope, became confused, or was too "drunk" or "stoned" to announce the winner properly.

• However, this theory was disproved when the Academy explained that two officials from PWC have been stationed in the wings at every Academy Awards ceremony since 1953 just in case such a situation should arise. If a wrong name were ever read, one of the officials would immediately step up to the podium and announce the correct winner.

Rude Removal is an episode segment of the a popular TV series X. The episode was produced during the original run of X, but the channel refused to let it air due to the characters swearing, even though the swear words were censored.

The title card for "Rude Removal" shows B gesturing with her middle finger as well as A mooning towards the audience.

A invents The Rude Removal System, a machine to remove the rudeness from his sister B. However, B thinks A is the one who is rude, so they start fighting and wander into the machine. Inadvertently, the Rude Removal System is activated, splitting the pair into well-behaved and rude halves. This creates two evil, rude duplicates, who use profanity and harbor destructive tendencies. The evil clones proceed to insult their mother and destroy the house. A and B now have to stop their rude halves from causing trouble and consequently being punished by their Mom, who believes the actions of the evil clones were that of her children.

At first, the producers were looking for a "quintessentially American person" to play the role of X. At the time of the casting session, actor A was in Namibia. He assembled an audition tape in a hotel bathroom, the only place with enough light,

and apologized for its appearance. A improvised, using an umbrella as a substitute prop. Singer was very impressed by his performance and commented on how well the "American actor" was able to grasp the character.

A credits the accent to "a misspent youth watching too much TV and too many movies".
