On Tuesday Stephen, Sue and Roger joined me at McDonalds, Brookman Street to present the owner with a cheque for a percentage of the monies raised in the money spinner over the past few months.

Wednesday night saw a group of us manning the chocolate wheel for the Lighting of the Christmas Tree. What a fun, busy night. A very enjoyable couple of hours. Thank you Roger, Sue, Ross, Gloria, Angelo, Kelsey, Gavin and Stephen.

Our next Rotary event is on Sunday 7 December when we will be cooking and serving the BBQ for the Norton Gold Christmas Party. Those of us who assisted last year thoroughly enjoyed the event.

Our last meeting for the year is on 15 December. This will be a family night. It will be a good opportunity to thank our

families for their support throughout the year. We have decided not to have a Secret Santa or exchange gifts. Instead we will be contributing to St Jude's School to assist to fund a teacher and hopefully a student for a year. The Board has agreed to bring the total amount up to $1000.

We will the have a break for a few weeks. Our first meeting back will be a social lunch on Sunday 11 January at Ken and Charmaine’s home. More details will follow.

That then gives us a couple of weeks until Australia Day and the Great Aussie Breakfast. Gloria will be seeking assistance from members to get together the supplies we need for the morning.

WHAT IS THE “FAMILY OF ROTARY?”

In pursuing the first Object of Rotary, we seek “to encourage and foster the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.” Friendship and fellowship was the foundation, the bedrock on which Rotary service was built.

WHY IS “FAMILY” A FOCUS OF ROTARY?

Because Rotary is about community. The community we live in, the worldwide community and the community of Rotarians. When we share in community, your problems become my problems and your joys - my joys. Therefore, Rotary families matter to Rotary, the family of Rotarians and the Rotarian's family. If we are to live out the Rotary ideal, to create a better world, we must start with the family. We need to care for all the members of our Rotary family, because without each other there is no community. Because we want to increase Rotarian satisfaction, improve retention, involve more people in Rotary events, make service projects more successful, and have greater support for The Rotary Foundation and International projects, we place emphasis upon:

Enjoyment Retention

Recruitment Foundation support

WHO COMPRISES THE “FAMILY OF ROTARY?”

Rotarians (Active and Honorary)

Spouses, widows/widowers, children, grandchildren and other relatives of Rotarians,

Rotary Foundation Alumni (Ambassadorial Scholars, Cultural Scholars, Peace Scholars, Rotary Grants for University Teachers and Group Study Exchange Members)

Rotary Youth Exchange Students

Rotaractors and their sponsors

Interactors and their sponsors

Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) participants

GARY C.K. HUANG RI PRESIDENT 2014-15

PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE December 2014

If you take a look at the Rotary calendar, it's easy to see where our priorities as an organization lie. The Rotary year begins in July; in August we mark Membership Month, in September we celebrate New Generations, October is for vocational service, and so on, turning our attention to different topics that are important in Rotary.

It's a great idea to do this, because it reminds us to talk about subjects that we might otherwise overlook during our busy Rotary year. But we all know that every topic on our calendar – from fellowship to our Foundation – is important. All of them are part of what makes Rotary what it is, and what makes all of us Rotarians.

In Rotary, December is Family Month. Looking back on my years as a Rotarian, I have seen how important family is in Rotary – and how important Rotary can be to our families.

My wife, Corinna, chose to join Rotary just a few months ago, after many years as a Rotary spouse. All three of our children are also Rotarians. All of them joined their own club, in their own time. All of them have found unique interests in Rotary. As we have watched them find their own paths, we have been struck by how wonderful it is to have so many members of our family involved in Rotary service.

Rotary gives us something good that we can all do together. With Rotary, we always have interesting things to talk about at dinner. We are all involved in different service, in different clubs, so when we sit down together, we are talking about humanitarian needs of every kind, in every part of the world. There is always something new to learn.

Our conversations are also a wonderful way to teach our children, through our own actions, what is really important in life. They learn about what life is like in different parts of the world, and how all of us have an obligation to help others when we can. I can think of no better lessons to teach our families than the lessons of Rotary service.

I hope that in this Rotary year, many of you will encourage your family members to join Rotary, Rotaract, or Interact. Bringing your family into Rotary doesn't just Light Up Rotary – it lights up your own lives as well.
