My dear Club Presidents and fellow Rotarians:

Rotary’s message of international cooperation as a path to world peace Last month I explained that Rotary’s strength is a result of the diverse skills, personalities and energies of our one million plus members around the world. Despite our differences, we are all united by the ideal of service. At times, we need more than an ideal to help keep us focused on our day-to-dayservice work. That is when we turn to Rotary’s Manual of Procedure. It provides a framework within which to operate, a structure to guide our work. Few Rotarians have read the MOP, as it is known, from cover to cover. I have done so, many times, and can assure you that it is a liberating and not a limiting operating manual. Specifically, it is as liberating as you will allow it to be. When I was in training with my District Governor classmates in San Diego,I found that many of them seemed to be looking to the MOP for permission - permission to organize their Districts following a certain pattern; permission to raise or spend money in unconventional ways; permission to offer innovative forms of recognition. My colleagues were looking in vain. The MOP is a relatively short compilation of guidelines, and as such it cannot possibly list everything that a Club or District leader can or cannot do. Rather, the MOP aims to describe a foundational set of values upon which Rotary leadership decisions should ideally be based. To give a simplistic example, the MOP does not specify the need to open a window, or to turn on the air-conditioning. It does not even specify a room temperature. It simply states that a healthy environment is important to success, and leaves the details to the club and district leaders to work out. Read the MOP, and read it as guidance concerning how to approach the challenge of Rotary leadership rather than as a checklist of dos and don’ts. That way, you – and Rotary – will gain the most benefit from the more than 100 years of wisdom contained in this fine Manual.

So I have three questions for each of you:

Most Rotarians have a story about what first attracted them to Rotary. For William Pollard Jr., 2008-09 Governor of District 7600 (Virginia, USA), that story includes a retired banker named Tommy. Pollard recounted the details when he visited clubs in his district during his term to talk about recruitment and retention. He shared his address with Rotary International News in honor of Membership and Extension Month: When I think of why we should ask someone to join Rotary, I think of Tommy. Two years after starting my bank-ing career in Richmond, I was asked to work in my hometown of Petersburg. One of the first people to visit me was Tommy Adkins, a retired banker, who asked me to attend a Rotary club meeting. While I was growing up in Peters-burg, Tommy lived on the same street as my family. I even delivered his newspaper. I had no idea what Rotary was but accepted Tommy’s kind invitation to visit the Rotary Club of Petersburg. Tommy passed away several years ago, and he probably never realized the

PeAce throuGh service

For about a year now, we here at Rotary International have had the pleasure of sharing the elevator, the cafeteria, the lobby, and a corner of the 18th floor with a white-haired man of impeccable manners, who laughs easily and seems genuinely happy to see us. A smile erupts on his face when he says hello, bowing his head and adding a gentle chuckle. He moves among us

gracefully – with his interpreter Eiko Terao – maintaining his signature cheer without revealing whatever else might be on his mind. However, he is probably thinking about Rotary. To hear him tell it, the only time Sakuji Tanaka is not thinking about Rotary is when he is sleeping and eating. “Rotary pretty much occupies my every waking moment,” the new president of Rotary International playfully admits.

Tanaka says that his wife, Kyoko, would describe him as “a Rotary nut.” A glance at his résumé supports this claim. He has been a member of the Rotary Club of Yashio, Japan, for 37 years. He has served Rotary at every level, including district governor, training leader, regional Rotary Foundation coordinator, member of the Polio Eradication Advocacy Task Force and Future Vision Committee, chair of the

those who know him well may not be so quick to agree. They might recall that not so long ago, Tanaka and a Rotarian friend began to clean the streets in their neighborhood. Tanaka would pull weeds, pick up litter, and cart the trash away. He would even remove the occasional dead dog or cat. “Before,” he says, “there were some very dirty places. However, people would see me and others spending the day cleaning the area in front of their houses. Eventually they would join in and, even better, would keep the area tidier on their own.” What started as a two-man effort soon evolved into a project of the local Rotary clubs, which carried out a neighborhood cleanup once a month. This expanded into a com-munitywide effort, with 59 groups cover-ing neighborhoods across Yashio twice a year, and the city’s mayor coming out to participate and address the volunteers.

Tanaka has said that after joining the Yashio club, he realized that “by helping others, even in the simplest of ways, I could help to build peace. Peace, in all of the ways that we can understand it, is a real goal and a realistic goal for Rotary.” He has established an endowed Rotary Peace Fellowship, and in January, he announced that he had chosen Peace through Service as the RI theme for his year. “Peace is not

something that can only be achieved through treaties, by governments, or through heroic struggles,” Tanaka said. “It is something that we can find and that we can achieve, every day and in many simple ways.” He later elaborated: “Peace and conflict resolution should start at home. The family is the smallest unit of society, so we should start from there. If you are mindful of peace with your partner and your family members, that gives you an opportunity to reflect on your family life and to spread that sense of peace by example. Peaceful families lead to greater peace for everyone.” The Japanese tradition of putting the needs of society above the needs of the individual parallels the Rotarian concept of Service above Self, Tanaka says. He notes that this view has been instru-mental in helping Japan rebuild after the tsunami and earthquake that ravaged the country in March 2011. The cooperation among individuals throughout the recovery effort also presents a positive lesson that the world can learn from, he says. “I believe that Rotary is contributing to that lesson, especially in training and educating members of the younger generation through its Rotary Peace Centers. They will bear the personalresponsibility to society and work to make the world a better place.”

Through it all, and after 49 years of marriage, Kyoko has been a willing com-panion on his Rotarian journey. Together, she and Tanaka are Paul Harris Fellows, Benefactors, and Major Donors. Although she does not speak English, he says his wife has a knack for communicating with people through gestures and body language, and that she is a “jolly, uplifting person.” Tanaka balances this patience with practiced efficiency. The former president of the National Household Papers Distri-bution Association of Japan says he has learned the value of a clean desk, in both a literal and virtual sense. He uses email extensively and maintains a lean inbox, saving only the messages he needs. “My personality is that of someone in a hurry,” he says. “It’s not my style to let things pile up. I like to get things done and move on.” Tanaka is not all business all the time, but even when he is in relaxationmode, he puts forth his best effort. Duringone evening of karaoke, he set a personalrecord by singing 54 consecutive songs, without a break. He recalls that three-hour crooning marathon with shy pride and quickly doubts that he would ever have the energy or stamina to do it again. However,

Like many non-Rotarians, I have heard of Rotary but never quite knew what it meant. When I had the opportunity to attend a Rotary’s public relations workshop, I prepared by searching, “What is Rotary?” in advance. The Internet showed a smat-tering of projects on humanitarian, polio vaccine, and literacy but it could not help me to define Rotary. After meeting actual Rotarians at the one-day workshop, I began to see why it was hard to explain Rotary to strangers-- Rotarians are a diverse group. Although attendees were typically mid- to late-career professionals, their interests ranged widely from helping flood victims, bringing medical care to remote areas, to promoting arts and culture. The diversity is Rotary’s strength, no doubt but it presents a challenge in describing a Rotarian. The common trait of Rotarians I noticed was the desire to help others. What about you? How would you describe Rotarians?

Held on Thursday, 19 July and Friday, 20 July, the seminar objectives were to motivate Rotarians to develop and implement the RI strategic plan; to support and strengthen clubs and districts through membership development and RI programs; and to enhance our public image and awareness. In addition, the event helped Rotarians from Zone 6B to share their experiences and best practices in humanitarian services while strengthening their bonds of friendship.

The most valuable resource available to Rotary Inter-national and clubs around the world is “members.” If a club is strong in members, then it can undertake all kinds of activities. Unfortunately, it is clear that if numbers are too low, a club may be limited in the activities it can plan and complete.

In discussing about building clubs, two questions are frequently asked: 1) How can we increase club membership? 2) How should we treat to keep members in our club?

If you read my article that follows, answers to these and other questions will be answered. July is the first month for Rotary administrations, and already we have the pleasure to welcome new members. The Rotary Club of Nonthaburi has four new members, Rotary Club of Ramkhamhaeng welcomed two new members and Rotary Club of Bangkhorlaem is now richer by two new Rotarians. Congratulations to all Rotarians.
