From Mrs. J Westphal:

Kindergartners have been enjoying guest readers thanks to the Wausau Early Birds Rotary Club! Once a month, volunteers read a book to our K classes on Webex, and then students each receive a book of their own to take home and keep. These books go along with a different theme each month. So far, we have enjoyed books about the alphabet and rhyming. Coming up next will be Fairy Tales! Each child also received an “On the Go” bag in which to keep their books. These bags can be great for taking along in the car, using while waiting somewhere, or simply enjoying at home. Consider adding a box of crayons and some paper to practice being an author,

too! This has been a very rewarding experience in all of our kindergarten classrooms and something our students look forward to. Be sure to look for your child’s new

book each month!

Free breakfast and lunch for all DCE students The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced it will allow summer meal program operators to continue serving free meals to all children through the end of the school year. This means all D.C. Everest students are eligible to receive a free school breakfast and lunch through June 30, 2021.

• If students choose additional ala carte items with their breakfast or lunch, they will be charged for those items. The basic breakfast/lunch meal is free.

• Elementary students who are not free or reduced status will be charged $.40 for a daily snack milk, if they choose milk for their morning snack.

Families may choose to keep their meal funds in their student’s online account or may request a refund. To request a refund, please contact the School Nutrition Office at 715.241.9700 (x 2407) or [email protected]. Breakfast and lunch take-home options for students Students at the D.C. Everest Middle School, Junior High and Senior High may pick up grab-and-go breakfast and lunch to-go bags at the end of their in-person instruction days to take home with them and enjoy on days when they are not participating in in-person learning. If a student has two days of remote learning ahead, they can choose to bring home enough options for both days.

Reading: We are learning about tall tales! All tall tales have a main character, a setting, a problem and solution, and they all have exaggerations! Some exaggerations we learned about are Paul Bunyan brushing his beard with a tree, Pecos Bill squeezing a snake so hard he was as skinny as a rope, and Johnny Appleseed having skin as tough as elephant hide. We compare and contrast stories we read and relate them to our own lives too. Writing: Our writing unit has been fun because we get to write facts about topics we want to teach people about. We wrote step by step instructions for brushing our teeth, building a snowman, and even cleaning our desks. We also do some fun science projects in writing. We built a tower out of paper, made our own creepy crawly bugs, and learned why emojis were created. Second graders have also been writing compliments to practice sentence structure. We write compliments to spread kindness to whoever needs it, whether it be teachers, friends, family, or even ourselves.

Math: We just finished a unit on measuring. If you ask any second grader, they will tell you that 100cm=1 meter! Now, we are counting money and straws by ones, tens, and hundreds. A place value mat is a helpful tool when you are learning about place value. We have virtual place value mats right on Canvas for us to use whenever we need them! Sometimes, we get to do partner activities to practice our math facts, but we always remember to sanitize before and after sharing materials. As hard as we’ve been working, we’ve still had a lot of fun. Second graders made pictures out of fall leaves, using the leaves in tons of different ways!

Greetings from Music! This is our new greeting that we’ve been using in music class this year! The students love it and a great positive way to start our time together in music! I have been able to teach second and third students so far this year and it’s been a blast! In second and third grade, we have been utilizing and exploring with Canvas, Webex music classes, a new music website, and more! Our subscription to a new music website has been a great resource of new fun games that we’ve been using in music. Ask any second or third grader about Poison rhythm or poison melody! We learned a lot about beat, rhythm, and pitch; but we’ve also taken some time to have some fun with different Halloween songs, dances, and even a rap! We learned about and sang America the Beautiful and did some fun body percussion to the Stars and Stripes Forever. We are finishing our time exploring and learning about Native American music. In second grade we also really focused on tone color and really listening to tell the difference between different instrument families and individual instruments. In third grade, we also learned about ostinatos, pitch names on the Treble Clef, and RECORDER! They’ve really enjoyed using our new music website to help put all of their rhythmic, pitch, and recorder knowledge together to play songs! I will be starting to teach fourth and fifth grade in the new music room starting on Monday, November 30th! I will be teaching kindergarten and first grade music starting March 4th.

Hey Good Day! Hey hey hey good day! Oh yeah it’s music time! Music time, music time!

Reset your day with music time!

It been a lot of great learning fun with second and third grade and I look forward to teaching K-1 and 4-5! Musically Yours, Mrs. Zell

This month Mrs. Sloan’s class learned about Holidays Around the World. We made passports so we can keep track of all the countries we visited. Our travels included stops in The Netherlands, India, Germany, Israel and Sweden! We learned about Sinterklaas, Diwali, the history of the Christmas tree, Hanukkah and St. Lucia Day just to name a few. The students had fun making some crafts that went with each of our stops. We also talked about our own holiday traditions and wrote about what we do to celebrate with our families.
