Saami Mittens

The Saami are indigeonous European

people that live in the northernmost areas

of the Scandanavian countries. Beth will share with

us their lively mitten knitting tradition. We’ll spend 9 class hours on the project. Most knitters will find

that they are able to complete one mitten and make a start on the second mitten.

Learn the special details of mitten construction

of the nomadic Saami peoples, by

knitting a mitten in multiple colors, circularly on

double pointed needles. Make a three color braided

cast-on, create the classic afterthought thumb (without a gusset), work different

bands of patterning, and the

pointed tip shaping at the end of the mitten. Some

of the motifs will require three yarns to be

worked within one round. A simple finger braiding technique will be demonstrated for

the traditional cord. Handling multiple yarns and designing will be discussed.

Skill Level: Must be proficient with

double point needles, Magic Loop, or

working with two circulars. Stranded

color knitting experience helpful.

Supply List:

• For Adult Sized pair: 2 oz each of

4 colors of worsted weight yarn

(traditional colors are white, red,

yellow, green and/or blue.)

Yarn kit available for Saami class in

traditional colors at additional cost of

$20.00

• One set of dp needles each US sizes

6 or 7 (4.0 or 4.5 mm) Approximate

gauge is 24 sts and 28 rnds/4 inches

or 10 cm.

• Tapestry needle, stitch markers, sticky

notes or magnetic board for reading

the charts.

Homework: NoneNorwegian Purl

The Norwegian Purl, a variation of the conventional Continental purl, is noted for its

superior tension control, and ease of

execution. The yarn always stays behind the work,

making ribbing a breeze and two-color textured knitting a pleasure. A

swatch will be knitted in class to practice this

technique and its applications:

Proper tensioning of the yarn, the conventional Continental

purl and knit stitches, the Norwegian purl, purl garter stitch,

ribbing with the Norwegian purl on the right side and on the wrong side, the

Scandinavian method of working with two yarns in the left

hand (knitting, purling, and weaving the floats) on the right

side and the wrong side of the work, as well as corrugated

ribbing on the right side and the wrong side of the work.

We’ll spend 3 hours Sunday afternoon learning Norwegian Purl.

Skill Level: All. It is helpful to have

the ability to knit Continental–working

yarn in the left hand–but it is not

mandatory.

Class Supplies

• Two contrasting colors of the same

weight yarn, either sport or worsted

weight.

• A pair of appropriately sized circular or

short straight needles. (Example: Size

4.5 mm or 5 mm for worsted yarn, size

3.75 mm or 4 mm for sport yarn.)

Homework: None.
