The Sahel region is grappling with a severe food and nutrition crisis. The humanitarian

community is scaling up response to this crisis, but significant funding gaps remain. Urgent

support is needed to ensure that programmes are in place before the crisis peaks in June.

The crisis is further exacerbated by the consequences of the conflict that has plagued northern

Mali. Widespread humanitarian needs persist in Mali while neighboring countries are faced with an

influx of refugees to areas already among the most severely affected by the food and nutrition crisis.

In addition, a meningitis epidemic continues to affect Chad, the Gambia, Burkina Faso and Mali. Cholera is also

expected to get worse as the rainy season approaches, particularly in Cameroon, Chad, Nigeria, Niger and Mali.

    IDPs

    Refugees

Malian refugees in Burkina Faso, Mauritania,

Niger and Algeria are living in areas already

severely affected by the food and nutrition crisis.

More than half of refugees are children.

Continuing population movements (includinglimited returns) complicate accurate IDP assess-

ments. Data on refugees also remain incomplete,

particularly for those arriving with livestock or

    transferred into camps.

    Major humanitarian needs include food,

medecines, WASH, shelter & non-food items,

protection, education and livelihoods support for

    IDP and host communities.
