KVM Overview

What is a KVM switch?

KVM stands for keyboard/video/mouse (otherwise known as

peripherals). A KVM switch is a hardware device that allows you

to control multiple computers from a single set of peripherals.

A KVM switch is useful wherever there are multiple computers,

but there is no need for a dedicated keyboard, monitor and mouse

for each one. KVM switches are frequently used where multiple

servers are placed in a single rack with a single keyboard,

monitor and mouse.

The application of using a KVM switch:

Large amount of servers to manage and control.

Cost-sensitive solution (limited IT personnel but with a large

amount of servers).

KVM Overview

Analog KVM switch

An analog KVM switch provides its user with a

local connection to all supported devices. You have

access to supported devices only when you are on-

site. Analog KVM switches can be considered as a

“basic version” of KVM switches.

A digital KVM switch provides its user with a

remote access via IP (i.e., web browser). You can

access all connected devices from anywhere in the

world at any time.
