One thing that makes me believe the Land Rover Freelander 2 is near perfect is that the diesel engine is more powerful, quieter and even more fuel efficient. In addition, it has recently extended its travel distance in covering more than 1,000kms with just one tank of diesel.
The updated Land Rover Freelander 2 has a new Stop / Start system for its manual transmission gear box. Not only that it saves fuel when it is coming to a complete stop, it also saves when charging of the battery is done though a mild hybrid system while electricity is generated from slowing or braking.
How does it work? The stop/start system controls throttle closing, ramps down fuelling, turns off the alternator to ensure the engine can stop smoothly. It is now equipped with a bi-directional crank sensor plus a trigger wheel to establish the crankshaft position in no time, hence improving start-up time up to 22 per cent.
Freelander 2 now features a new 2.2-litre direct-injection turbo diesel engine, claimed to be much quieter and more refined than before. It has 110kW of power with an updated manual transmission gear box. Torque is up to 420Nm (20Nm more than the outgoing models). Fuel economy (combined driving condition) is 6.6L/100km. The CO2 emission level is reduced to 174-185g per km. In addition, the new diesel engine can now accept 10 percent of biodiesel fuel increased by just 5 per cent from the previous model.
Most importantly, the whole car has been given a whole revamp in noise reduction. In terms of noise reduction, special noise absorbing materials and cover were designed to arrest and reduce radiated noise targeted at the top and bottom part of the engine. That results in a 2db reduction in noise level.

always my pick. It has plenty of power and torque, simple and straight forward technology with latest input from common rail direct injection technology and water-cooled variable geometry turbo-charger. It is stronger, more reliable, more powerful and saves fuel consumption. Hydraulic power assisted rack and pinion steering is impressive, not only that it is clear and directive, it is also balanced in terms of both feel and weight.
Suspension is balanced between a tall, solid four wheel drive and a comfortable family SUV. It retains all its traits and due to its stiff and strong chassis, riding comfort is excellent as well. When corning in windy country road, I felt a sense of security. As it is a real 4 wheel drive, it has a wading clearance of 210mm which is good enough for a mid size 4 wheel drive.
Obviously, with its unique four wheel drive ability from the Range Rover family, it has out-weighted most of the other popular competitors in this segment. Equipped with gravel, snow, sand and rut setting on the terrane control dial, the Freelander 2 is fun to drive almost in all road conditions.
In Australia, recently, we used to come across different and sometime very adverse weather, it is highly practical for anyone to buy in a car that can travel in almost all sorts of road condition. In particular, there are still plenty of rugged outback and country roads to be explored during the weekends. On the other hand, it still saves fuel and has fun in the urban jungle, day in and day out.
