FJ Cruiser is quite a distinctive face amongst the Australian four-wheel drives market, especially, when you traced its heritage with the 1960s Snowy Mountain scheme. Currently, there are Land Rover Defender, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited dominating the retro style segment, while others go for a bit contemporary like the Range Rover Vogue and the Grand Cherokee.
Style and image are important, or else, someone will rather walk than to drive a golf cart in the city, unless you want to make a statement for something. The aesthetic of the FJ Cruiser designer team tried to capture the roughed pioneering spirit of a famous old work horse; they maybe right, but the FJ Cruiser is far more important than just a show pony.
Undoubtedly, it has the right DNA from Toyota Prado’s V6 petrol VVT-I engine and its 5 speed automatic gear box. With a proper high and low gear range for doing the right Four Wheel Drive stuff while camping off road holiday, the
adventurer’s credential is up there on top of the list.
When you look further, you will discover that the styling makes more sense. Toyota has purposely dropped that oval bull Viking emblem yet retaining the somehow identical text only brand name on a simple grille extended with a large wrap around the indicator cluster. The rear hinged half doors on both sides give more passage space to the rear seated passengers. While there may be no passenger, the half door is just good enough in comparing to the three-door Toyota Prado. The flooring materials are rubber like compound and all seats are treated with water repellent coating. FJ Cruiser still enjoys a short overhang for the front and the departure angle for the back is generous; so, completed with a set of large and tough off road rubber and alloy wheels, it can wade and climb with no fuss.
When you look at the price, it is cheaper than a three-door Prado. Most people

believe that’s an ideal incentive for young adventurers who don’t want too much electronics such as all terrain assist and hill climb or descent assist, but they just want to do it themselves with their skilled off road manoeuvring and thus saving some money for the driving around Australia adventure real deal.
When you look at the car, like the Hummer H3, it instantly gives you a gigantic monster look. As a matter of fact, FJ Cruiser is really a mid size SUV 4 wheel drive. The more upright wind screen gives you 3 wipers for its rather narrow military like but also panoramic front view. Sitting on top of the central control above the central air vents are the optional but necessary gauge cluster with compass, outside temperature read out and vehicle pitch display.
Inside the car, the automatic gear shift knob and the low range knob are finished in metal cylinder style that gives you a “cool” cyber feel. The central instrumental panel is truck like with painted metal in matching colour with the body panel. It is absolutely useful for Radio/CD MP3 control and its climate air controller. All the knobs are in larger size with good touchy feel. There is something that I like while sitting in the cabin: there seems to be a no nonsense straight forward, go everywhere and go anywhere motto lying somewhere in the car.
The seats are supportive, apart from the rear legroom is slightly just right. Many drivers may have a word with the chunky “C” pillar; but, that is heavily compensated by extra huge truck style side mirrors and extremely useful rear parking camera and sensors. But then the car is so Cyber Space Star Trek like that it simply turns heads with it dramatic fresh and bright colour code complemented well with a contrasting white top. The rear of the FJ is still
going for a wrap around rear windows but has opted for the right hand opening door.
How does it drive like?I love 21 and 25 seater buses; FJ Cruiser is just my cup of Chinese tea. When you have that small truck or small bus driving experience, the FJ Cruiser is just enjoyable. For real people with real money to buy the FJ Cruiser, they won’t be disappointed. The Toyota durability and technology credentials are everywhere. As the FJ Cruiser is not as big as the 5 door Toyota Prado and not to mention the Land Cruiser 200 series, the FJ Cruiser is a bliss to travel with. Steering is clear, precise and informative. The V6 petrol does it job well with stop start traffic condition, highway traffic and off road adventure. The FJ Cruiser is slightly leaning towards mild and medium off road set up; however, people will also appreciate it as an urban jungle wanderer with a coupe styled cabin as well. There is just one issue, sitting cushions of the rear seats have to be taken off, in order to make way for a relatively flat floor in carrying cargo. Apart from that, it is all nice to me.
