Oglethorpe University Receives National Recognition for Community Service, Named to 2012 President’s Honor Roll
[ATLANTA, GA] – For the seventh year in a row, Oglethorpe University has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-‐learning and civic engagement. OU is the only school in Georgia to make the general honor roll seven years in a row.
The Corporation for National and Community Service, which administers the annual Honor Roll award, recognized colleges and universities across the country for their impact on issues from literacy and neighborhood revitalization to supporting at-‐risk youth. The Corporation oversees the Honor Roll in collaboration with the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Campus Compact and the American Council on Education.
“Congratulations to Oglethorpe University, its faculty and students for its commitment to service, both in and out of the classroom,” said Wendy Spencer, CEO of CNCS. “Through its work, institutions of higher education are helping improve their local communities and create a new generation of leaders by challenging students to go beyond the traditional college experience and solve local challenges.” Honorees are chosen based on a series of selection factors, including the scope and innovation of service projects, the extent to which service-‐learning is embedded in the curriculum, the school’s commitment to
long-‐term campus-‐community partnerships, and measurable community outcomes as a result of the service.
At Oglethorpe, the OU Center for Civic Engagement takes the lead in community service initiatives that include student, faculty, and staff volunteers. The Center focuses on four key areas of service: education, environment, health and wellness, and homelessness and hunger. During the 2011-‐2012 academic year:
• 611 students engaged in community service through OU’s Center for Civic Engagement
• 72 volunteer projects were completed and 9,801 volunteer hours were contributed through CCE projects and programs
• 9 Civic Engagement dialogues were hosted for students to participate in
The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll honors the nation’s leading higher education institutions and their students, faculty and staff for their commitment to bettering their communities through service. These are institutions that reflect the values of exemplary community service and achieve meaningful outcomes in their communities.
The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is a federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in service through Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, the Social Innovation Fund and other programs, and leads President Obama’s national call to service initiative, United We Serve.
