NEWS IN BRIEF Here is a brief look back at some of the stories that have been covered since the last e-news.

Live Below the Line At the start of May, I took the LiveBelow the Line challenge whichencourages people to feed

themselves on 1 a day for five daysto highlight the fact that 1.4bn peoplelive in extreme poverty globally.

Southside Association at 40 I was delighted to join members of theSouthside Association to celebratethe groups 40 th anniversary .

The event offered the chance to lookback at the work of members overthat period and to look to the future.

    Pedal on Parliament

I joined around 2,500 cyclists fromacross Scotland at the Pedal onParliament rally campaigning forimproved facilities and funding forcycling.

The completion date for the new Sick Kids hospital has once again been pushed back to early 2017.

The latest delays to the project, whichwas initially due to open early nextyear, have hung on a land swap dealbetween NHS Lothian and Consort the firm which owns and operates theEdinburgh Royal Infirmary (ERI).

The health board want to build thenew hospital on land occupied by acar park at the ERI. They have built areplacement car park and want toswap the land with Consort.

However, delays have occurred whileConsort negotiates agreement withthe banks involved in their operationof the ERI.

Early delays to the project came as aresult of the Scottish Governmentsdecision to change the way thebuilding would be funded .

Initially, the Scottish Government wasgoing to pay for the project usingpublic money as theyre doing for thenew Southern General in Glasgow.

However, in 2010 they announcedthat the building would be deliveredthrough the Non-Profit Distribution(NPD) model.

Under this model funding would comefrom private investors to deliver thebuilding. NHS Lothian would then

Over the last couple of months, communities across Edinburgh havebeen taking part in the NationalSpring Clean.

The campaign , organised byKeep Scotland Beautiful,

supports communities toorganise local clean ups to helpimprove their area.

The clean-ups have involved allkinds of community andresidents groups, schools, youthclubs and businesses.

Ive heard from residents whohave set to work picking up litter, cleaning graffiti from walls andremoving fly posters. I also joined aclean-up in Dalry.

One of the things that strikes memost about these events is the waythat they have brought membersof the community together.

pay an annual fee to the developersto use the site.

Since the change to fundingarrangements was announced, Ivereceived assurances that the ScottishGovernment remains committed tothe project.

However, we still have no firm datefor completion and NHS Lothiansambitions to develop chi ldrens

services have been left in limbo. Now the board is being forced toreconsider remaining at the currentSciennes hospital which wasdeemed not fit for purpose by theChild Health Support Group in 2003.

Until there is more clarity, theconcerns of staff, patients, tradeunions and others will persist aboutthe prospect of Edinburgh losing outwhile c hildrens healthcare servicesare centralised in Glasgow and I willbe continuing to press for the ScottishGovernment to act to break thecurrent deadlock.

The events have involved people ofall ages giving their time to helpimprove their area and it is amazing

the difference that can bemade in a short space oftime.

The outcome of these typesof event is overwhelminglypositive

    - Residents benefit from moreattractive local spaces,

    -Visitors get the chance toappreciate what a beautifulcity Edinburgh is and;

-Those who are thoughtless enoughto drop litter are sent a clear messagethat the community will not put upwith it.

If you are interested in finding outmore about how you can organise aclean-up in your area, visit the KeepScotland Beautiful website .

I was recently made aware of a new project to help provide support for vulnerable people.

The Heres a Hand project is aninnovative tool for older or disabledpeople allowing them to access helpwhen they need it.

The service allows users to set up acontact network of people, such as

friends and neighbours, who couldhelp with everyday tasks.

If a person needs something done, such as changing a blown lightbulb orpicking up some shopping they cansend a text message to the service.

It will then automatically contact thenetwork to see if someone can helpout.

The service is running a pilot projectbefore rolling it out on a permanentbasis.
