Stabile Holzverbindungen werden am besten mit Weißleim hergestellt – die Verbindung muss dann knapp eine halbe Stunde lang aufeinan-der gepresst werden, wobei der Anpressdruck möglichst gleich-mäßig auf das Werkstück verteilt werden sollte. Eine ideale Aufgabe für Schnellspannzwingen, denn diese lassen sich in ausreichender Zahl schnell in Position bringen. Wirklich? Gerade in der Handha-bung zeigten viele der getesteten Zwingen deutliche Schwächen, an den Spannwerkzeugen von Go On, Lux Tools, Stanley und Work Plus kann man sich sogar empfindlich klemmen. Umso positiver konnte unser Testsieger aus der Easy-Baureihe von Wolfcraft zeigen, wie man es richtig macht: Die Betäti-gungshebel sind abgerundet und griffgünstig geformt, die Zwinge lässt sich auch einhändig präzise führen und feinfühlig zusammenfah-ren. Somit kann auch die Position der zu fixierenden Teile während des Spannvorgangs gut kontrolliert und korrigiert werden. Wie gut sich die Zwingen in Position bringenlassen, hängt wesentlich von der Form der Griffe ab – und von der Griffposition: Bei Bessey und Wolfcraft ist die Handhabung von

oben und unten möglich, Bei Lux Tools, Meister und Stanley sollte die Hand von der Schienenseite aus zugreifen. Bei den optisch ähnlichen Zwingen von Go On, Silverline und Work Plus ist ein Zugriff aus Richtung der festste-henden Spannbacke günstiger. Bei der Positionierung der Spann-werkzeuge sollten Sie daher nach der Bauform der Griffe entschei-den, wie die Zwingen am besten amWerkstück ausgerichtet werden. In der Praxis ist vor allem wichtig, einen ausreichend hohen Flächen-druck aufzubringen. Bei Verleimun-gen mit Weißleim wird ein Druck von wenigstens 0,2 Newtonmetern pro Quadratmillimeter empfohlen – das entspricht immerhin einer Gewichtskraft von 20 Tonnen pro Quadratmeter! Um diese Presskraft auf einem Werkstück von 50 x 10 Zentimetern aufbringen zu können (nötige Presskraft: rund eine Ton-ne), sind mit unserem Testsieger also 20 Zwingen erforderlich. Unser Praxisbeispiel zeigt, dass die erziel-bare Presskraft ein wichtiger Faktor ist. In dieser Disziplin sind erwar-tungsgemäß die voluminös gebau-ten Zwingen von Bessey und Stan-ley im Vorteil – die ebenfalls groß gebauten Produkte von Go On und

Silverline bleiben allerdings deutlich hinter den Erwartungen zurück. Eine höhere Haltekraft kann dabei einen höheren Kaufpreis rechtfertigen: Bei Nutzung der Bessey-Zwinge werden für Verleimarbeiten nur halb so viele Spannwerkzeuge benötigt wie mit dem Wolfcraft Easy-Modell – das spart auch Stress bei einer Offenzeit von nur ein paar Minuten. Andererseits ist Kraft nicht alles: Bei verwinkelten Werkstücken ist es vorteilhaft, kleinere Zwingen zur Hand zu haben. Viele der geteste-ten Zwingen zeigten zwar unmittel-bar nach dem Fixieren eine hohe Haltekraft – die sich jedoch schon nach Sekunden merklich reduzierte. Der Effekt beruht auf zu elastisch ausgelegten Kunststoffen und war bei der kleinen Zwinge von Stanley und bei Work Plus am stärksten. Ebenfalls wichtig ist die Länge der Spannarme, denn bei breiteren Werkstücken kann nur mit weiter in die Fläche reichenden Fixierpunkten eine gleichmäßige Druckverteilung erreicht werden. In dieser Disziplin schiebt sich der Klassiker Klemm-sia an die Spitze, nur die großen Einhandzwingen von Silverline, Stanley und Wolfcraft reichen an ihre gut 10 Zentimeter Armlänge heran.

Stable wood bonding is done best with casein glue - the bonds must be held for just under half and hour, where the clamping pressure is as equally distributed along the workpiece as possible. An ideal job for quick clamps as they can be put in position with sufficient speed. Really? Even in handling, many of the clamps tested showed clear weaknesses, clamps from Go On, Lux Tools, Stanley and Work Plus are very sensitive to clamp. Test winners from the Easy range from Wolfkraft show more positively how it can be done right: The acti-vating levers are rounded with convenient handles, the clamp can be precisely guided and delicately clamped with one hand. This means the position of the parts to be fixed can be well-controlled and corrected during clamping. How well the clamps are brought into po-sition depends sigificantly on handle shape – and from the handle position: It is possible to handle Bessey and Wolf-craft from both above and be-low, for Lux Tools, Mesieter

and Stanley the hand must grip from the rail side. For optically similar clamps from Go ON, Silverline and Work Plus access from the fixed jaw direction is more conven-ient. During positioning of the clamping tool then the decision is made depending on the han-dle shape, where it should be best placed on the workpiece. In practice it is above all im-portant to apply a sufficiently high surface pressure. During glueing with casein glue, a pressure of at least 0.2 Newton metres per square millimetre is recommended – this means an applied force of 20 tons per square metre! In order to apply this pressure on a workpiece of 50 x 70 centimetres (re-quired force: around a ton), 20 of the test winner clamps are required. Our practical ex-ample shows that the achieva-ble force is an important factor. In this discipline as expected, the larger volume clamps from Bessey and Stanley have an advantage, the equally large build products from Go On and Silverline however remain clearly below expectation.

A higher clamping force can then justify a higher purchase price: When using Bessey clamps for glue work only half as many clamps are required as with the Wolfcraft Easy model – this also saves stress of an opening time of only a few minutes. On the other hand, force is not everything: For angled workpieces it is an advantage to handle smaller clamps. Many of the tested clamps have a high clamping force immediately after appli-cation – however it reduces signifcantly after seconds. The effect affects springy plastics and impacts smaller clamps from Stanley and Work Plus the most. Also important is the length of the clamping arm, because for wider workpieces equal pressure distribution is only possible with sufficient fixing points along the surface. In this discipline the clas-sic Klemmsia claims the top spot, only the larger one-hand clamps from Silverline, Stanley and Wolfcraft come close with their 10 centimetre arm length.
