ISLAM
• Satan (الشيطان) was originally a Jinn • Name was Iblis• When Adam (as) was created, refused to
prostrate to him• Reason he gave: “I am better than him: You
created me from fire, and You created him out of clay” (Surah al-A’raf: 12).
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ADAM AND SHAYTAN
• Four ‘ayns
• Shaytan was ‘abid, ‘arif, ‘alim• He was not an ‘ashiq• Adam (as) and Shaytan both made mistakes• Difference is that Adam (as) repented
• "Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers.”
CHRISTIANITY
Satan was an angel
Name was Lucifer
Literally means “light-bearer” and was used to refer to the dawn
appearance of Venus, which indicates the arrival of daylight
Was one of the greatest angels
Reason for downfall is not very clear in Christianity
“For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will
exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the
mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend
above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High”
(Isaiah: 14: 13-14).
BATTLE
In book of Revelation, it says, “And there was a
war in heaven: Mi’-cha-el and his angels fought
against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his
angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place
found any more in heaven. And the great dragon
was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil,
and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he
was cast out into the earth, and his angels were
cast out with him” (Revelation: 12: 7-9).
Material used later by people like Milton to
describe the actual battle in Paradise Lost.
FINAL ABODE
According to Dante, Satan is
currently resting in the center place
of Hell, which is frozen over in ice.
Henchmen of Satan are dispatched
around earth to tempt and deceive
mankind.
A good example of deception
methods of Satan comes in C.S.
Lewis’ work The Screwtape Letters.
