The 18th Annual Bluegrass and Folk FestivalPresented by the Sonoms County Folk Society andThe California Bluegrass AssociationFrom our 2018 Festival Director, Kevin Russell

Ok, everybody, circle the wagons! Pull out your guitars, banjos, fiddles, dobros and mandolins! It’s time for blue-grass in the north bay! Well, very nearly time.

Of course I’m talking about the upcoming Sonoma County Bluegrass & Folk Festival, coming up on Satur-day March 10th at The Sebastopol Cultural Community Center! Oh, what a great music day it will be.

The music will start at noon and end at 10:00pm that night.

The festival will be presenting a nice range of kinds of music: bluegrass (of course!), but also Celtic Deadhead, western swing classics & originals, modern folk, and a fair amount of acoustic-driven-not-yet-defined music. I think it was Gram Parsons who said there’s basically two kinds of music: good and bad. Heck, you tell me what it is after you hear these great performers.

*We’ll kick off the festival with Wake the Dead, a band that seamlessly blends Grateful Dead material with strains of a deep Celtic influence.

*The Carolyn Sills Combo is a modern western swing outfit that draws heavily from the roots of Bob Wills for it’s contemporary material. You might want to bring your dancing shoes for these guys!

*Next up is the now all-acoustic version of Missy Raines and the New Hip. Having dropped the drums and electric guitars of a past incarnation, the current band focuses on acoustic folky bluegrass songs, played with staggering technical virtuosity! Prepare to be knocked out!

*Closing out the afternoon session will be the irrepress-ible Joe Craven and his pals—The Sometimers! How to define this? Parsons would simply say it’s the good stuff. I’ll add that Joe and company play some the most creative, fun, adventurous music you’ll ever hear. I think of Joe as our sorta west coast John Hartford—a creative musical genius who engages the audience with his infec-tious smile and mind-blowing musicality! Big fun here!

*In addition to these featured performers, this year we’ll have a series of “tweener” acts, including guitar ace Doug Adamz, local folky trio More Joy, longtime north-bay modern folk heros - The Ruminators, western swing duo Wine Country Swing and a very bad Peter, Paul & Mary imitation by Mike Stadler, Cori Wood and...well, me!

During the 5:30 to 7:30 dinner break, classes will be offered. They are TBD at this point but we’re hoping to offer something on bluegrass guitar, mandolin, fiddle and possibly bass, maybe even a vocal workshop. This is still in the planning stage. Check the CBA website for updates on this.

The evening program will be a full on bluegrass con-cert with one of the best young bluegrass bands in the bay area: Blue Summit featuring AJ Lee! And, let me tell you, these guys have done their homework! They are the leading edge of west coast bluegrass and will delight everyone with their enthusiasm, material and stellar musicianship. The band will be opening for our headlin-ers, John Reischman and the Jaybirds!

If you’re familiar with bluegrass music, especially bay area bluegrass, you already know how freaking amazing John and the Jaybirds are. But in case you’re not familiar with them (or you’ve been living under a rock) they are simply one of the best bands in bluegrass music today. They have five critically acclaimed records and two Canadian Folk Music award nominations. As their web-site proclaims: “the group fashions a stylish, elegant take on bluegrass that is at once innovative and unadorned, yet unselfconsciously new.” In other words, beautifully rendered songs and tunes with gorgeous vocals and superb musicianship. Plus, they’ll have their brand new CD, “On That Other Green Shore” to celebrate with us.

Don’t forget: this year you can buy an all-festival pass for both the day and evening program, or just a separate evening pass. A Full Event Pass will get you into both the day and evening program ($35 advance Full Festival Pass, $40 at the door). This year we are also offering a separate evening-only pass for those who can’t make the daytime events but wouldn’t want to miss this stellar evening of West Coast Bluegrass ($20 advance, $25 at the door). You can purchase pre-event tickets through Peo-ple’s Music, The Last Record Store or the CBA Website.

Food will be available on site, vendors with musi-cal supplies will be on hand, and the ever-popular Uke Raffle (thanks to KALA) will again be held! Jamming will be encouraged throughout the day! Hope to see you on the 10th!

Occidental Center for the Arts

from Andrea Van Dyke, OCA Event Coordinator

Occidental Center for the Arts, located at the former Harmony School, was the brain child of local legends Doris Murphy and Kit Neustader, who envisioned a ‘Home for All the Arts’. Developer Orin Thiessen gifted the fledgling non-profit with an auditorium and a classroom after transforming the campus into a residen-tial village, and in April 2010, O.C.A. opened its doors. Thanks to a core of dedicated volunteers, O.C.A. today is a thriving hub of the West County arts scene and an intimate live music venue with great acoustics that can seat up to 180. O.C.A. sponsors a rich variety of music concerts, as well as dance, literary, film, theater and community events and classes; some for no admission. Our Art Gallery is open to the public on weekends and during events. The auditorium and classroom are also available to rent, as did the late Laurie Schaffer and Greg Abel to produce their popular acoustic music series. We are attempting to build a lobby, and we welcome the sup-port of our members and audiences to GROW the arts!

Folk and acoustic musicians of all persuasions have found a true foothold at our venue. Roland White drew a full house on a Tuesday in 2011, and we have since hosted fine touring and local talents e.g. Laurie Lewis, Holly Near, Bill Evans, Nell Robinson & Jim Nunally, Jim Kweskin & Meredith Axelrod, Claire Lynch, Lucy Kaplansky, Jayme Stone, Alan Reid & Rob van Sante, Carey Dubbert, Bryan Bowers, Teresa Tudury, Steve Gil-lette & Cindy Mangsen (back on March 10 for the fifth time!) and many others. Don’t miss Americana Masters Dan Crary, Bill Evans & Wally Barnick as a trio of talents on Sunday, March 4 at 3 pm. See you at the show! www.occidentalcenterforthearts.org

The Cloverdale Fiddle Festival is set to happen April 7, 2018. Your hosts, the Cloverdale Citrus Fair, the Califor-nia State Old Time Fiddle Association and the Sonoma County Folk Society are looking forward to presenting another fine festival.

In addition to the fiddle contest, you can look forward to performances and workshops on the California Blue-grass Associations Jamming Stage. Old Time banjoist and singer Debby McLatchey will again and perform and present a Charlie Poole style banjo workshop. The youth performance group Antioch Strolling Strings, the acoustic swing band Haute Flash Quartette and old time stalwarts, The Road Oilers round out the performers. A new addition this year will be a slow jam for relative beginning musicians conducted by John Karsemeyer. Check the web site for the schedule.

Fiddlers are encouraged to preregister to avoid the long lines incurred in same day registration. Rules are posted under contestant rules. Remember Cloverdale is an independent fiddle contest and not subject to the rules of the California State Old Time Fiddle Association; however, it does make a nice warm up for the National Contest in Weiser, Idaho.

We hope you continue to support this fine festival as we continue to carry the spirit of old time fiddling into the future. For more information, visit www.cloverdale-fiddles.com. If you need further information regarding contest issues, feel free to call Judith Jones at 707-337-3940 or email at [email protected].

RV and tent camping are available on a first come first serve basis. Electricity and showers are available, and patrons are encouraged to stay Friday and Saturday nights to take advantage of the jamming opportunities. Contact: 707-894-3992 or [email protected] for information regarding fairground services.
