The Fabulously Easy Shrug The Easy Shrug is a simple, but unique garment. (At least, I haven't seen anything like it.) Because it is easy to make, most of the class will be spent on planning your shrug to suit you. For each design element of the shrug, I will suggest at least two possibilities. All suggested techniques will be covered in class. Intermediate and Expert knitters are encouraged to go beyond my suggestions. There will be a follow-up session on Sunday for questions, help with techniques, or showing off your design.

Bring a pencil, measuring tape, crochet hook, calculator, 500-750 yards of yarn in the main color, and one ball of yarn in a complementary color, the needles that you use for the gauge swatch and your usual bag of tools. The amount of yarn and use of the complementary color will depend on your choices.

None Beginner to expert

Pick a pattern that looks the same on both sides. (6x6 ribbing or brioche or garter stitch or …) Cast on 30 stitches and knit in pattern until you have a square swatch. Wash and dry the swatch as you normally would for that yarn, and bring it to class. Also, make two swatches by casting on 30 stitches. Then, in stocking stitch, knit 6 rows of 6x6 ribbing. Leave the stitches live, (do not bind off), on the two small swatches.

Tunision Crochet Tunisian Crochet has been called the hybrid between knitting and crochet. This Introduction to Tunisian Crochet

class teaches 2 basic stitches - Tunisian Simple Stitch and Tunisian Knit Stitch - to get you started on a sample scarf. Depending on time

and students, may also learn Tunisian purl stitch.

A Tunisian Crochet hook 5.00 mm or 6.00mm or size , otherwise known as an Afghan hook, which can be ordered via Amazon, or usually carried by Michaels or your LYS. I prefer the kind with a flexible cord at the end, such as Chiaogoo brand, but a long straight hook is fine for this how-to class.

Oops: Fixing Knitting Mistakes

For knitters who already know the basic

stitches &who have made a project or two.

Making mistakes comes with the territory. It’s

helpful to learn how to correct without

always starting over. And learn how to decide

when to correct, or when to just live with it.

In this class you will learn: to “read” your

knitting, how to unknit ("tink"), how to take

out several rows for those mistakes that must

be ripped back, how to fix a dropped

stitch with or without a crochet hook, how to

fix a dropped stitch that has run down several

rows, how to drop a stitch on purpose &

correct a stitch, how to correct if you've

added extra stitches, how to correct if you

don't have enough stitches, how to add a

yarn over if you forgot one, how to get the

stitches back on the needle if you accidentally

pull the needle out and tips for avoiding

Fair Isle and Steek – Part 1

(you must also take Part 2 Sun. 9:00 – 12:00

Fair Isle is a traditional knitting technique used to create patterns with multiple colors. It is named after Fair

Isle, a tiny island in the north of Scotland that forms part of the Shetland islands. Fair Isle knitting gained considerable popularity when the Prince of Wales

(later to become Edward VIII) wore Fair Isle tank tops in public in 1921.

Traditional Fair Isle patterns have a limited palette of five or so colors, using only two colors per row that are worked in the round, limiting the length of a run

of any particular color. You will learn how to work with two colors at the same time during the workshop with a steeking area knitted in the round. You will finish

steeking the cotton coaster and learn how to finish the 2 day class – 1st day create the coaster, 2nd day steek and

Gauge is NOT a Four -letter Word

In the class we will cover how to accurately measure gauge and how to use that gauge to predict if the garment you want to knit will turn out the correct size, or larger or smaller. We will see how yarn, needles and the knitter can all make a difference in gauge. We will learn how you can change your yarn but still get the right gauge, or how to use the gauge you get to achieve the correct size.

.

None tape measure or ruler, scissors, yarn and needles that were used to make swatches.

None Using any smooth, light colored, worsted weight wool or wool blend yarn make 3 swatches. Use size 8 needles for one, a size 6 needle for one, and a size 10 needle for one. For each swatch cast on 20 stitches (this is important if you want to see how to use the gauge-o-knit) and knit several inches in stockinette stitch (knit one row, purl one row). Bind off each swatch and label them so you know which size needle you used for each one. This can be done easily by tying knots in the tail – 8 knots for the size 8, 6 knots for the size 6, etc. If you have time and want to compare wool to cotton to see how the fiber can affect gauge do another swatch with same # of sts on the same size 8 needles using a worsted weight cotton yarn.
