INFORMATIVE, MATCHMAKING& PROJECT PITCHING PROGRAM

DEDICATED TO THE PROMOTION OFSMART URBAN TECHNOLOGIES

ACROSS AFRICA

The SMART CITY concept is growing in popularity all over the world as more and more connected technol-ogies emerge.

In developed countries, it has become synonymous with high-tech urban innovation where technology-based solutions leverage existing infrastructure in innovative ways to solve the daily challenges of city life.

Since five billion people are expected to live in urban settings by 2030, smart cities are expected to drive sustainable economic growth, competitiveness, prosperity and a better life for citizens, thanks to new urban technologies having the potential to deliver multiple benefits, within their environment, in real time, and with a high-level of accuracy.

In such an environment, African cities are well positioned to leap frog the development of global smart cities. Many African leaders – and increasingly many multinational companies – are starting to recognize the poten-tial for uniquely African smart cities to join the top rank of global tech-centers. Furthermore most African cities do not suffer from the crippling costs associated with the maintenance of legacy infrastructure and systems.

As an example, Africa has jumped directly to mobile and wireless services, rather than bothering with fixed-line options, and new edge solutions for telecommunications or the infrastructure that has been expanding to solve city problems daily. The continent already boasts the fastest mobile subscriber growth in the world – with the average subscription rate at 72 percent and expected to reach 97 percent by 2017 – mobile surge is one of the key factors affecting the growth of smart cities.

Additionally, given that 62 percent of the continent’s population is under 25 years of age, many international brands will be attracted to an African market full of young consumers. With the mindset of these young Af-ricans, who operate within an environment where anything and everything is possible – an attitude, which tends to stimulate entrepreneurship and the spirit of innovation – Africa is well positioned to take off as a new place for smart cities.

To meet these needs, SMART CITY AFRICA, an informative, matchmaking and project-pitching program is born and will be deployed across the continent in 2016 to promote smart and new urban technologies that can meet the needs of the African metropolises of tomorrow, and generate related growth opportunities.

Not only will the program concentrate and advance the visions, ideas and solutions of urban technology; SMART CITY AFRICA will also serve to position African countries, both regionally and internationally, as leaders in the development of the urban sector economy.

THE SMART CITY AFRICA AGENDA

With the dramatic shift of migration from rural to urban areas increasing, new opportunities for the urban tech-nology sector have become critical to Africa’s economic development and sustainability goals. Moreover, due to galloping urbanization on rural land, governments have now realized the cities that are primed for urban living are also magnets for investment.

The launch of the SMART CITY AFRICA falls in line with this vision, as it will bring new attention to innovative and smart urban technologies that can make life better for the tens of millions of people who live in cities across Africa.

The SMART CITY AFRICA is a matchmaking, informative and project-pitching agenda that will provide a unique platform to convene civil servants, entrepreneurs, advocates and decision-makers to discuss opportu-nities and challenges with founding smart cities across Africa. This initiative can create sustainable economic development and high quality of life by excelling in multiple key areas: economy, mobility, environment, peo-ple, security, recreational standards and governance. The 3-day agenda will consist of:

A. MATCHMAKING SESSIONSIndeed, with the technology industry booming, we are seeing the emergence of a remarkable cohort of new companies from all over the world with urban ambitions and increasingly frequent forays into new areas of economic and social life. Forty of these international companies offering urban technologies in the following sectors of activity will be taking part in matchmaking sessions organized in advance with qualified buyers.

• HABITAT & SECURITY • ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

• EDUCATION & HEALTHCARE • TRAFFIC & CONNECTIVITY

• WATER & WASTE MANAGEMENT

B. INFORMATIVE SESSIONSParallel to the matchmaking sessions, a conference program will assemble internationally recognized smart city experts who will debate important current and future trends for urban technology, as well as identify strategies and cutting-edge ideas with the potential to improve services and bring rapid changes of city dwellers in Africa.

The fast track, compact, non-disruptive, conference program will be tailored for civil servants eager to bring greater efficiency to their cities, and for guest speakers to brainstorm ideas and share their deep knowledge of how life works in densely populated places.

C. PROJECT PITCHING SESSIONSSMART CITY AFRICA will be partnering up with private international funds servicing early-stage, high-growth start-ups across Africa to roll out an accelerated program aimed at entrepreneurs engaged in Africa’s nascent smart urban solutions ecosystem.

The program will provide them with access to investment and working capitals, global mentors, opportunities to develop ideas and partnerships, and connection with the marketplace.

On the last day of each SMART CITY AFRICA program, local entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to show-case their ideas, connect with potential backers, possibly get their projects financed and rub shoulders with world experts.

They will also be able to pitch eligible projects to a panel of urban technology industry key players and poten-tial backers ready to kick start Africa’s transformation into the most smart city-friendly continent.

Winners will be invited to travel abroad to attend an all-expenses paid 6-week program that will provide them with resources to further develop their ideas and scale their solutions

They will receive mentorship by specialists in the areas of smart cities, hardware, manufacturing, transporta-tion, technology and entrepreneurship, marketing and strategy; and will be presented with cost-cutting strat-egies and solutions to solve problems associated with rapid urbanization and industrialization.
