2서울역사박물관과 유럽문화원연합(EUNIC_European Union National Institutes for

Culture)이 공동 개최한 유니크(EUNIC) 영화제가 올해로 제 4회를 맞이합니다. 해를 거듭할수록 유럽 주요 도시의 최신 이슈를 담은 고전 영화, 미개봉 영화 등 양질의 유럽 영화를 발굴하여 소개하고, 국내 외 영화 감독, 평론가 등 전문가 초청 강연과 감독과의 대화 등 교육적 내용을 더하여 서울 시민들에게 유럽 문화에 대한 이해를 높이고자 합니다.

유럽 전역에 큰 파장을 일으켰던 1968년의 50주년을 기념하며, 이번 영화제의 주제는

입니다. ‘자유와 독립을 위한 투쟁’, ‘권위에 대한 반발’, ‘성공하지 못한 혁명’, ‘실패한 젊은 날의 초상’으로 기억되는 혼란의 1968년을 기억하고자 합니다. 체코, 프랑스, 독일, 헝가리, 이탈리아, 스페인, 스웨덴, 영국 등 유럽 8개국 대사관 및 문화원에서 선정한 9편의 영화를 통해 관객들이 당시 유럽의 시대상을 간접적으로나마 느끼고, 촛불 혁명을 지낸 우리의 과제에 대해 생각할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

당시 이탈리아 정치투쟁을 이끌었던 젊은이들을 재조명하는 진지한 다큐멘터리뿐만 아니라 당시 시대상황과 일상 생활을 담아낸 스페인 드라마와 헝가리 코미디 작품까지 다양한 장르의 영화를 통해 주제를 다양한 각도로 조명고자 합니다. 더욱이 바르샤바조약 이후 체코슬로바키아의 정상화 시기를 묘사한 ‘거지 같은 시기의 아름다운 시절(1997)’과 독일의 당시 고등학교 교실의 이야기를 다룬 ‘부인, 저는 코끼리입니다(1969)’는 국내 최초로 공개되는 작품이며, 유럽을 대표하는 거장 영화 감독인 장 뤽 고다르(프랑스)의 ‘중국여인(1967)’, 잉그르 베르만(스웨덴)의 ‘페르소나’ 그리고 스탠리 큐브릭(영국)의 ‘2001 스페이스 오디세이’ 등 주옥 같은 고전 영화를 통해 사회적으로, 정치적으로 많은 변화와 혼란의 시기였던 유럽의 1968년에 대해 생소한 관객들도 부담 없이 영화제를 즐길 수 있을 것입니다.

각 대사관 문화원에서 초청한 영화 전문가의 짧은 강연은 유니크 영화제만의 매력으로 자리 잡았습니다. 강연과 더불어 헝가리 코미디의 대부 포뇨 게르게이 영화감독과 독일의 안드레아스 쾨칭 문화학자를 모시고 영화 상영 후 대담의 시간을 마련하였습니다. 어느 때 보다 풍성하게 마련된 이번 영화제를 통해 유럽 역사와 문화를 이해하고, 그 이해를 발판으로 서울과 유럽이 더욱 가까워질 수 있기를 기대합니다.

The EUNIC Film Festival, co-organized by the Seoul Museum of History and the EUNIC Korea (European Union National Institutes for Culture), celebrates its fourth anniversary this year. As the years go by, we have introduced high quality European films, including classic movies and films that have never before been screened in Korea dealing with the latest issues in major cities in Europe. In addition, we have invited the professionals such as domestic and foreign film directors, critics and other specialists, to provide short lectures before screenings to increase the understanding of European culture to the citizens of Seoul.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the year 1968, we hope to remember this tumultuous period as a ’fight for independence and freedom’, a ’protest against authority’, an ’unsuccessful revolution’, and a ’portrait of the failed days of youth’. Through 9 selected films by the Embassies and Cultural Institutes of the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Sweden and UK, Seoul citizens will be able to indirectly identify with what happened in 1968 in Europe and also think about what has happened after our candlelight revolutions.

From various points of view, we would like to focus on a theme through the various genres of film, not only the documentaries focusing on young people who led Italian political struggle, but also Spanish drama and Hungarian comedy reflecting the times and daily life. In addition to the gemlike classic films, the Czech Republic's “Those Wonderful Years that Sucked” (1997) depicting the time of normalization after the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia and Germany's “Madame, I am Elephant” (1969) are being screened for the first time in Korea. Through masterpieces of outstanding European directors such as Jean-Luc Godard’s ’Chinese Woman’(1967), (France), Ingmar Bergman’s ’Persona’(Sweden) or Stanley Kubrick’s ’2001 Space Odyssey’(UK) the Korean audience can become familiar with the ‘ –tumultuous year of 1968 as a period of social and political changes’.

Short lectures of renowned cinema experts, invited by the Embassies and Cultural Institutes, become the EUNIC Film Festival’s major attractions. This year we specially prepared a time for the talks after film screenings with Gergely Fonyó, called the godfather of Hungarian comedy, and Geman culturalist Andreas Kötzing. The audience can share and appreciate films with these two film professionals. We believe, that the EUNIC Film Festival will contribute to the better understanding of European culture and history in Korea and thus tie Europe and Korea closer together.

SynopsisMiki’s family left Hungary after the defeated 1956 Hungarian Revolution against the communist government and the invader Soviets. But in the mid 60’s, when everyone else was fleeing to the West, Miki and his parents leave behind the American dream and return to Budapest. The rebellious boy has a new dream: to spread rock'n'roll in the communist Hungary… He has one choice: to apply to a talent show and prove to everybody that he has a place in this old-new world. Miki's music made the first crack on the Iron Curtain... The film is based on a true story of Miklós FENY , a popular Hungarian musician, the founder of the group “Hungaria”.

1968년 브레맨의 고등학교 교실의 이야기로 학교에서의 마지막인 3학년 시기의 수업, 저항, 개인적인 삶을 다룬다. 영화는 정치에 무관심한 혼란의 길에서 권위적인 교무행정부와 좌파 시위자 둘 모두를 취하는 트러블 메이커이자 선동자인 룰(Rull)의 이야기에 특히 초점을 맞춘다. 학생인 룰은 브레멘의 문법학교에서 발생한 일을 연습하고 학교의 권위주의적 구조를 파괴하려고 시도한다. 결과는 민주적인 학교 형태를 요구하는 유머러스한 저항 운동으로 나타난다.

SynopsisPaula, a single mother, falls in love with the political functionary Paul. Paul isn’t happy with his private life either. He knows his wife is cheating on him. Paula wants her new happiness by any means. At first, Paul is fearful and hesitant, until he realises that he may have found the love of his life. THE LEGEND OF PAUL AND PAULA is an enchanting plea for the right to individual happiness, even in a socialist state. The film was a huge success in the GDR.

SynopsisI’m an Elephant, Madame follows a class of high school students in 1968 Bremen during their last year at school, their lessons, their protests, their private life. Focuses in particular on the troublemaker & provocateur Rull who in his apolitical chaotic way takes on both the authoritarian school administration and the leftist protesters. The pupil Rull rehearses the uprising at a grammar school in Bremen and tries to break through the authoritarian structures of his school. The result is a humorous protest movement that demands a democratic school form.

3악장으로 이루어지듯, 세 부분으로 나뉘는 이 영화는 우리가 알고 있는 당시의 느낌을 표현하고 있다. 개인적인 기억, 역사, 반성의 순간, 그리고 변화에 대한 염원을 자료 선별과 편집을 통해 엮어 내었다.

SynopsisIn Madrid, the orphan sisters Irene, Ana and Maite are raised by their austere aunt Paulina together with their mute and crippled grandmother after the death of their mother and their military father Anselmo. Ana is a melancholic girl, fascinated by death, after seeing her mother having a painful death and her father dead in bed.

SynopsisExclusively made from documentary archive material, the film recounts the parabola of the youngsters who enlivened the extra-parliamentary political battles between 1967 and 1977 and who, with their passions and dreams as well as their violence and crimes, followed the idea of a revolution in an attempt to “storm the heavens.” Divided into three movements as though it were a musical score, the film expresses the feeling we have today about those years, and its choice of materials and editing mixes personal memories, history, moments for thought, and a wish for transfiguration.

SynopsisElisabet Vogler is a famous actress. In the middle of a performance of Electra, she falls silent. Even prolonged treatment at a psychiatric clinic fails to make her speak. The doctor in charge suggests to her nurse, Alma, that she should spend some time in isolation on the coast with their patient. Faced by the obstinate yet also sympathetic silence of Elisabet, Alma begins to tell her more than she should. Impressed by the physical resemblance between the two of them, she even identifies herself, subconsciously, with the actress. But the friendship is disturbed when Alma discovers from an unsealed letter to the doctor that the actress is observing her coolly and amusedly. Alma now becomes almost hysterical, trying to project her own feelings of guilt and anguish on to Elisabet, urging her wildly to speak. Back at the clinic, Alma breaks down after a final outburst.

SynopsisThose Wonderful Years That Sucked is a nostalgic comedy based on an autobiographical novel written by a best-selling Czech author Michal Viewegh. A story seen through the eyes of a growing boy Quido captures the life of one typical Czech family from the period of relaxed atmosphere at the beginning of 60s, through very painful times of the Warsaw Pact Invasion and following normalization till the fall of the communist regime. Quido seems to be a genius boy with a literary talent, what makes him many troubles. After the Warsaw Pact Invasion his father loses his position and the family escapes to the countryside. His unyielding father, who wanted to maintain his dignity, makes some compromises to ensure a better life for the family. But the life in the time of normalization drives him insane…
