THE SITE IS ON A BEAUTIFUL QUAY LOCATED IN KLEIVAN, VESTVAGØY MUNICIPALITY, IN LOFOTEN, AND IT CONTAINS THREE BUILDINGS WHICH DATE BACK TO THE EARLY 1800´S.

A fishermen’s cottage (Rorbu), a cod liver oil production building (Trandamperi), and a cod salting building (Brygge) were part of a now abandoned fishing village. These are considered historically important for being the remains of a form of life prevalent in this region which has ceased to exist. For this reason the area was listed in the “Cultural Heritage Plan for Lofoten” in 2007. It now it will be restored and turned it into an Art and Culture production Centre meant to be a public ressource to become a reference for similar initiatives throughout the region.

THE MISSION OF THE SCARCITY AND CREATIVITY STUDIO IS TO IMPROVE THE USE OF THESE PROTECTED BUILDINGS; BY CREATING A MEETING POINT WHICH WILL PROVIDE ACTIVITY AND SOCIAL LIFE TO INCREASE THE USE OF THE QUAY, AND MAKE IT MORE PLEASANT FOR VISITORS; ARTIST GROUPS, LOCAL PEOPLE AND SUMMER TOURISTS.

THE PROJECT WILL PROVIDE A SAUNA AND MULTIPLE OUTDOOR FACILITIES SUCH AS AN OUTDOOR FIREPLACE, BARBECUE, OUTDOOR EATING, FISH CLEANSING, ETC., WHILE ENHANCING THE TRADITIONAL FISHING ACTIVITIES OF THE TOWN.

The SCS project is located at the end of the quay aiming for a sensitive relation with the landscape and a direct contact with the water. All facilities are contained in a three bands folding system. The ondulating bands connect the different levels of the site, providing opportunities for lounging, furniture, and when they rise, interior spaces.

SAUNA

The sauna is created by the rising of the three bands that are clearly legible in the interior due to their ondulating movement and the gaps allowing light to pass into the interior. The wood cladding on the inside signifies the continuity of the bands within the sauna. The use of glass and polycarbonate for the end facades underlines their presence by using translucency and transparency. The completely open front façade offers an exceptional view of the distant landscape.

THE TERRACE

The band system creates the terrace that connects all site levels and all outdoor equipment. Indeed the bands are folded and subdivided to form naturally integrated furniture and benches. There are three major areas that are distributed on both sides of the sauna: An outdoor fireplace which is a meeting point where seats are made by the band through level difference; a cooking area where you find a long table incorporating a barbecue and benches directly in continuity with the sloping roof of the sauna; and finally a south facing rest area where you can sit and enjoy the sun and also practice fishing.

SCS

The Scarcity and Creativity Studio (SCS) is a design and build studio within the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) whose focus is on ‘translations from drawing to building’. The studio’s aim is to expose students to the full architectural process, from interacting with the clients to building their designs. SCS seeks challenging contexts in which local conditions and creativity are employed to make the most of scarce resources. SCS welcomes proposals for projects from individuals and groups who need buildings to facilitate their community activities. The work to date can be seen in scs.aho.no
