snippetsMarch sees autumn starting to find its way in, while it gently herds out our hot and clammy summer. I do believe I like autumn, though it calls upon winter, which is my least favourite season... But all is well in the land of continuous summer ... all is well indeed.
This edition we have some interesting articles ... we meet the Galliot family, Natanie covers the issue and love of pets, this I know is the most difficult subject, but agree it must be covered. Living in a road full of pet escape artists, I understand the frustration, the flip side too is once a free agent always a free agent and it costs to keep these little darlings in, neighbours talking to neighbours what a novel concept, love it!
How cute is the genet! A beautiful animal indeed. We are blessed with an abundance of animals in KZN and especially here in Seaward. The other morning a meerkat crossed the road in front of us, chirping us badly, only to be followed by the smallest one I have ever seen, and mom was in no mood for us to get any closer. So she ushered baby quickly over the road and into the bush close by. It was just the perfect way to start the day.
Be blessed, love hard and chat soon!

AGM, individual issues are handled by the relevant sub committees. Nominations and motions must be in by the 25th February so that they can be circulated and properly considered.
The audited financials for the year ending 30 September, 2013 have been completed and await ratification. The Association remains in a healthy financial position with an increase of R1,128,255 in reserve funds amounting to a total of R4,799,448, this is after the purchase of the Estate office. -Levy debtors have been reduced by approximately 50% year on year and collections are being achieved. The sword of Damocles however hangs over us in the form of provision for bad debt which is now close to R2,000,000 this all being attributed to liquidations which have taken place the main one being the hotel site, which still appears to be going no-where slowly.
Some of the financial year end reserves have unfortunately been depleted by the work in opening up the San Jose water course – we did however get a park out of it.
A little gem of knowledge came our way after we made enquiries about a possible claim against our public liability insurance where a member of the Association may be involved in an accident on the estate – the answer back was quite curt – as the Association is made up by its members a member cannot claim against himself. In essence I suppose it makes sense, as it would be self-destructive to sue yourself!
Cheers

Damned if you Do and damned if you DoN’T – I refer here to the new speed hump that has been erected near the end of Pascal Drive. The hump was designed to serve two important purposes:
1. The San Hills intersection off Pascal is a design nightmare not of our making, when approached from the San Hills side the topography makes it impossible to see vehicles in Pascal. In addition because the road rises steeply as does the entrance road to San Sydney it was essential to ensure traffic calming was introduced.
2. The other reason for the hump and angle at which has been placed is to divert storm-water which could have had an effect on the units in San Sydney which were flooded last year. The hump was built to the specifications laid down by AARTo and is legal, the best we can ask for is please slow down. As an added precaution we have ordered mandatory speed limit signs to go with the current signage indicating recommended speed is 10 kph.
We are still getting some residents sneaking contract workers into the Estate to carry out alterations for which plans have NoT been submitted, please follow the rules and laws controlling this, we hate having to play policeman.
The Annual General Meeting is to be held on the 26th March, 2014 you should all have received the notice by now and will be getting the agenda shortly, if you have a pressing issue which you require to be raised please give these to your JRC member in a motion format. only issues which affect the entire Estate are considered at the

Please note when opening the visitors system please establish that you do in fact know who is at the gate before you press the 9 ? As many residents do not even talk but ‘JuST” open. This not only compromises’ YouR security but that of “ALL” the other residents as well.

once again the subject of refuse raises its dirty head. Please bear in mind that with the current ‘Monkey” situation it has become somewhat of a timing exercise when putting out your refuse.
Please note that household refuse is collected on Tuesdays and Fridays during the course of the day (we cannot get a fixed time). So it is imperative that these bags are not put out any time other than on those days.
Then garden cuttings and refuse (the white bags) get collected on Fridays, please note that the limit is 2 bags per household and Dolphin coast rigidly stick to this quota.
It is also not cricket to dump your bags on another resident’s verge as they then inherit your mess should the monkeys get to the bags first or you increase the number of garden bags over 2.
We will appreciate every resident’s co-operation in this regard.
Motorcyclists while it’s nice for you to nip around our speed bumps this creates a hazard as you will disappear from site of any other road user while you are next to the kerbing. So try and ride in the centre of your lane?

From the administration managers desk
Hello everyone,
Your pets are there for your
enjoyment, however not every single
person living in our community are
pet lovers, thus we ask that you
please ensure that they stay within
the curtilage of your property, and
that they do not cause a nuisance.
If you have a problem with your
neighbour’s pets, please go and
speak to them and resolve the
problem amicably. There are more
pressing issues that we as Estate
Management have to deal with than
play police, and make sure that you
and your neighbour play nice. We
also request that you ensure that
your pets are on a leash when taken
for walks.
We will be starting a number of
audits towards the end of the year,
and we ask that you please ensure
that if there are any problems
that you please take a minute to
come and see us regarding the
same to ensure that there are no
inconveniences caused in this regard.
Most of you would have noticed that
when you phone the office, there is a
voice prompt system in place. Due to
us sharing office space with SDP, and
to ensure you reach the person that
you want to chat to, the following
will assist you in the same.
The options for the different
extensions are as follows:
1. Seaward Estate Management
office: Pravina, Mel, Nat, Dave
& Joe
2. Sustainable Development Projects
(SDP): Simon, Alex, Roxanne,
Calum
3. Estate Security (on a 24hour
basis): M4 Security Gate. our
office hours are from Monday
to Friday, 8am – 4pm, excluding
weekends and public holidays.
Please note that on weekends,
public holidays and after hours,
the estate office is closed, and we
ask that you please utilize option
3 on the voice prompt service, as
any other extension will not be
available.

a male dominated family with three boys and one girl all living with a very special Mom
and Dad. We live in Johannesburg but dream to live in our holiday home in Ballito someday. Dad is a Financial Director at SA’s largest Logistics companies and Mom is a sales manager at the company that makes all those yummy Woolworths
pies. We are a very loving family with a very strong bond. We are all very unique and people love spending time with us.
Kaelee is the eldest daughter, 17 years old and currently at St. Dominic’s doing her final year at school. Not much longer and she will be joining the busy life and pressures which you don’t
experience in school. The eldest brother is Regan who is 10 years old and attends Martin School Primary along with his twin brothers Matthew and Kyle. The twins are 7 years old and are now in Grade 1.
We have a very spoilt little Jack Russell named “Bella” which runs around so freely in the evergreen bushes around our home. She loves

it!!! The family sport would have to be quad biking, boogie boarding and fishing as it is enjoyed by all. The boys all caught their first fish off the rocks of Willards beach in December. All 3 boys are great swimmers and have been chosen to swim in their school galas and I believe will soon be South Africa’s next Chad!
We moved into our home in San Karina in Sept 2008, after a long and patient wait for the house to be built (2 years). Whenever we have a gap we try and come as often as we can as we love the tranquillity and vibe Ballito has to offer. We love coming to Ballito as it is our getaway from the rat race of the “BIG city” and allows us to relax and rejuvenate after
hard work and stress. We love the beach which is our second home, so much so that people no longer have to ask where or what we are doing whilst in Ballito. We feel safe and enjoy the community life at Seaward Estate. We have made many friends and look forward to every trip down to the North Coast, our happy place.

Genet CampinG in San Sydney?
Much ado has been made of the
recognition of a genet within the
estate. Genets belong to the
largest family of carnivores, the
viverrids, which include the civets
and the mongooses, the latter being
species we are quite familiar with.
There are a number of species of
genets that have been discerned,
three of which are resident in Africa
and one species, the common genet,
reaching into Europe.
The genet encountered in Seaward
Estates is the “large spotted”,
“tigrine” or “blotched” genet
(Genetta tigrina), possibly the
most widespread of all the genet
species. They are able to easily
adapt to variable environments, but
prefer forest and woodland, which
makes the Estate an ideal habitat.
In addition to swamp and coastal
forest existing within the estate,
the human presence brings with it
all sorts of habitat that may lure
genets into gardens including caged
birds, fruiting trees, lighting (which
attracts insects) and possibly the
occasional vermin.14| Seaward Estate
Seaward Estate | 15
Genet CampinG in San Sydney?Genets are excellent climbers
but are just as capable of agile
movements across open ground,
preferring to hunt at night and
take refuge during the day. This
means that trees, as well as holes
and leafy scrapes are occupied
during the day, avoiding predators
and disturbance. If encountered,
a genet may arch its back and
flare its tail in response to any
approach…a common threat
posture often displayed to other
males. Genets are generally
solitary animals, however as
described above, males will
aggressively defend their territory
against other males. A male’s
territory may cover as much as
5km2, which he will patrol almost
daily, enticing females into the
area through vocalisation and scent
marking.
Genets, like the striped weasel,
also found within the estate, are
testimony to the opportunity
presented by urban development
in former canelands, particularly
where some cognisance is given
to the maintenance of open space
and natural habitat. Preservation
of habitat, particularly in gardens
that abut conservation areas,
serves to provide increased habitat
and refuge for such species, while
preventing alien and unwanted
species, such as the ubiquitous
mynah bird, dominating such areas.

FoR THE BuNS
• 625g/1.3lb strong white flour, plus extra for dusting
• 1 tsp salt• 2 tsp ground mixed spice• 45g/1.5 oz unsalted butter,
cut into cubes, plus extra for greasing
• 85g/3oz sugar• 1 lemon, zest only• 1½ tsp fast-action yeast• 1 free-range egg• 275ml/10fl oz tepid milk• 125g/4oz mixed dried fruit
FoR THE ToPPING
• 2 tbsp plain flour• vegetable oil, for greasing• 1 tbsp golden syrup, gently
heated, for glazing
1. For the buns, sieve the flour, salt and ground mixed spice into a large mixing bowl, then rub in the butter using your fingertips. Make a well in the centre of the mixture, then add the sugar and lemon zest and yeast.
2. Beat the egg and add to the flour with the tepid milk. Mix together to a form a soft, pliable dough.3. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured work surface. Carefully work the mixed dried fruit into the dough
until well combined. Knead lightly for 5 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.4. Grease a large, warm mixing bowl with butter. Shape the dough into a ball and place it into the prepared
bowl, then cover with a clean tea towel and set aside in a warm place for one hour to prove.5. Turn out the proved dough onto a lightly floured work surface and knock back the dough. Shape it into a ball
again and return it to the bowl, then cover again with the tea towel and set aside for a further 30 minutes to rise.
6. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured work surface and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten slightly into a bun shape using the palms of your hands. Cover the buns again with the tea towel and set aside to rest for 5-10 minutes.
7. Grease a baking tray with butter and transfer the buns to the tray. Wrap the tray with the buns on it loosely in greaseproof paper, then place inside a large polythene bag. Tie the end of the bag tightly so that no air can get in and set aside in a warm place for a further 40 minutes to rise.
8. Preheat the oven to 240C/475F/Gas 8.9. Meanwhile, for the topping, mix the plain flour to a smooth paste with 2 tablespoons of cold water.10. When the buns have risen, remove the polythene bag and the greaseproof paper. Spoon the flour mixture into
a piping bag and pipe a cross on each bun.11. Transfer the buns to the oven and bake for 8-12 minutes, or until pale golden-brown. As soon as you remove
the buns from the oven, brush them with the hot golden syrup, then set aside to cool on a wire rack.
