2013. Journal of Reinforced Plastics & Composites. This study deals with the preparation and characterizationof thermoplastic composites using polypropylene, high-density polyethylene and polylactic acid matrices andincluding whole chicken feathers as reinforcement. The behaviour of the composites was determined in termsof physical and mechanical properties, which were related to the fibre–matrix compatibility analysed by Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

Available now, theElastostat® masterbatch opens up large fields of application, the company says, particularly for industrialpackaging such as big bags and plastic drums or cans. Other application sectors are the automotive industry,and packaging and transport systems for electronics.

Proceso y evaluación del desempeño de los ultrasonidos, lainducción y la resistencia a la soldadura de termoplásticosavanzados materiales compuestosPublicada el 21/08/2013

<p> La posibilidad de montaje a través de la soldadura es una de las principales características de losmateriales compuestos termoplásticos y contribuye positivamente a su coste-eficacia en la fabricación. Esteartículo presenta una evaluación comparativa de ultrasonidos, inducción y la resistencia de la soldadurareforzados con fibra de sulfuro de polifenileno (PPS) muestras compuestas termoplásticas individuales decarbono que comprende un análisis del comportamiento mecánico estático y dinámico de las articulaciones,así como de las principales variables del proceso. El proceso de soldadura por inducción tal como se utiliza enesta investigación beneficiado de la naturaleza conductora de las fibras de refuerzo. Por lo tanto, ninguna desusceptor se colocó en la interfaz de soldadura. La soldadura por resistencia utiliza una malla de aceroinoxidable fina tejida como se aplicaron el elemento de calentamiento y presiones bajas y tiempos desoldadura para evitar que la corriente de fuga. Directores de energía triangulares moldeados en una cintaaparte de la resina PPS se utiliza para concentrar el calor de ultrasonidos en la interfase de la soldadura. Laresistencia a la cizalladura de una sola vuelta estática de las articulaciones se encontró similar para lainducción y la soldadura ultrasónica.

2013. Trends in Food Science & Technology. Aerogels are porous andlightweight materials capable of active sorption and releasing desiredcompounds and/or bearing mechanical load. Using polysaccharides asaerogel matrices instead of silicate or synthetic polymers has additionalbenefits. Polysaccharides can be developed as bio-based, biodegradable,and/or edible materials in food applications. Polysaccharides that could beused to prepare aerogels include cellulose, hemicelluloses, marinepolysaccharides, and starch, all of which have in common the ability toform gels either by themselves in the presence of water or with dications,other cross- l inking agents, and/or other, blended, or mixedpolysaccharides.

2014. Journal of Food Engineering. The use of pH and conductivityelectrodes as non-destructive methods for monitoring changes in thefreshness status of packed fish is explored. The electrodes monitorchanges in the electrical properties of an aqueous phase positioned in theheadspace of the fish package. Volatile compounds produced in/on thepacked fish and released in the headspace dissolve into this aqueousphase. Several compounds affect the electrode signals.

2014. LWT - Food Science and Technology. Gum Cordia based edible films were fabricated as a function ofplasticizer type and concentration and their thermal, mechanical and gas permeation were investigated.Solution casting method was adopted for film fabrication. Glycerol, sorbitol, PEG 200 and PEG 400 in therange of 0.1–0.3 g g1 dry polymer weight basis were used as plasticizer. Film properties were found to bedependent on the plasticizer type and concentration. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy revealedsome interaction between plasticizers and the polymer. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) supported thatplasticizers were miscible with the polymer.

2013. Journal of Cleaner Production. Reduction of packaging waste hasbeen a European target for more than 40 years. However, packaging isindispensable for protecting what it carries. In this study, an analysis of theEuropean regulations on packaging and of their resulting effect onrecycling performance was performed by means of a literature survey andthe national results published in the European Database, Eurostat. Basedon these data, two series of five Life Cycle Assessments (corresponding tothe national situation of five European countries: France, Germany, Italy,Spain, Sweden) were conducted on three olive packaging solutions:doypacks, glass jars and steel cans.

Efecto de envases nanocompuestos que contengan diferentesproporciones de ZnO y Ag en la calidad de la carne de pechugade polloPublicada el 01/10/2013

2014. Journal of Food Engineering. This study reports the antimicrobial capacity, nanoparticle migrationproperties and the influence on some meat quality traits of a packaging based on a low density polyethylene(LDPE) blended with a nano-antimicrobial master batch composed of Ag and ZnO (5% and 10% w/w). Meatwas aged for storage times of 0, 7, 10, 15 or 21 days. Composition of the package atmosphere, somemicrobiological analyses, meat sensorial quality, meat color, visual appearance score and lipid oxidation index(TBAR) values were determined. Irrespective of the packaging, the O2 concentration decreased and the CO2concentration and count for all types of microbe increased with storage time. Redness, yellowness and Chromaof the breast meat increased until to 7 days whereas maximum lightness values were found at 15 days.

However, the key question whichstill remains unanswered is the ultimate fate and biodegradability of these polymers. During a short-time frameonly the oxidized low molecular weight fraction will be amenable to significant biodegradation. The short-timeframe biodegradation potential of different LDPE-transition metal formulations was, thus, explored through asimple chemical extraction of oxidized fraction.

Formation of zinc oxide nanoparticleswere confirmed by using UV–Vis spectrophotometer, Fourier transforminfrared spectrometer and X-ray diffractometer. The particles size (100 nm)and structure of nanoparticles were studied under scanning andtransmission electron microscope. The nanoparticles were used againsttwo prominent foodborne pathogens, Salmonella typhimurium andStaphylococcus aureus and were found highly effective against both ofthem.

Polymer additives manufacturer AkzoNobel has unveiled a new range ofantifog additives that stop the formation of water droplets on plastic films.Armofog 151 enhances the hot and cold fog performance of polyethyleneand ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) food packaging films. AkzoNobel is alsooffering a product called Armofog 151-XE35, which is a free-flowinggranular form which can be applied directly to the extruder and includes35% active antifog additive.
