Step One

Put your note cards into order by sub-topic

Decide which subtopic should go first, then second, then…………..

Most Logical.

Most Powerful.

Step Two

Page 5: Sentence Outline

Order each sub-topic.

Look at each card and decide the proper, common-sense, logical order of each card.

Repeat for each sub-topic.

Step Three

If you have any cards designated for your introduction or conclusion, order them now.

Make a stack and get ready to enter them in your sentence outline.

I suggest numbering your cards to keep them in order - in anticipation for your research paper.

IntroductionFollowing the directions in each part

of the outline, highlight the directions and replace it with a sentence that answers the prompt. DO NOT USE QUESTIONS, ONLY DECLARATIVE STATEMENTS.

Remember to use formal language and make your sentences clear and concise, avoiding unnecessary phrases, cliché, slang, and first/second person.

Quick note: If you are introducing a title that will need an acronym, identify that somewhere in your introduction……perhaps in the Key Terms section. Ex. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that…….

My Idea Cards

Do NOT use your “My Idea” cards in the body of your paper.

Keep them in order in your card stack so that you can include the “my idea” cards later when you write your paper.

The first time you introduce a source, use a first signal phrase.

See your handout and use your Hacker book for any other type of in-text citation that you may need such as when you have multiple authors.

Don’t forget to put the (page number if you have one; if not, don’t use one).

The period goes after the parenthesis.

You will need your updated Working Bibliography so that you can name the author’s first and last name and their

credential.

MAGAZINE PRESSURE

The models in magazine articles and ads continuously send the message that skinny is healthy and beautiful.What the reader never sees is the turmoil that these models and celebrities go through to look that way.

Notice the list of SWEET verbs on p. 113?

Instead of repeating the phrase.....”Bo

“This article tells,” use

more descriptive verbs like:

Contends

Declares

Points out

Rejects

Compares

Confirms

Admits

Assets

Believes

You are only allowed to use the verbs “says” and “tells” once!!!

Now you try it.

Take out some scrap paper and create your first entry for your sentence outline. Use the first card in your stack. Introduce it with a signal phrase, use a sweet verb and end it with a parenthetical page number if you have one.

The amount of time a teen spends watching television affects the amount of pressure celebrity images have on them. Statistic prove that 60% of teens spend 40 hours or more a week watching television.

The article “Skinny is Killing Hollywood,” details that the amount of time a teen spends watching television effects the amount of pressure celebrity images have on them.

What if you don’t have an author’s name…….

The second signal phrase looks like this.

The amount of time a teen spends watching television effects the amount of pressure celebrity images have on them (“Skinny is Killing”).

You may abbreviate the title for a second signal phrase.

Keep it simple, please!

Each entry is one sentence only. You will be able to use the remaining information on your cards as you write your paper. Because of this, keep your cards in order!

If you have a quote that is long, use ellipses to shorten the quote and use only the main idea.
