Primera Lectura: Eclesiastés 1: 2, 2: 21-23 Todas las cosas, absolutamente todas, son vana ilusión. Hay quien se agota trabajando y pone en ello todo su talento, su ciencia y su habilidad, y tiene que dejárselo todo a otro que no lo trabajó. Esto es vana ilusión y gran desventura. En efec-to, ¿qué provecho saca el hombre de todos sus trabajos y afanes bajo el sol? De día dolores, penas y fatigas; de noche no descansa. ¿No es también eso vana ilusión? Palabra de Dios, Te alabamos, Señor Salmo Responsorial 89: Señor, ten compasión de nosotros. Segunda Lectura: Colosenses 3: 1-5, 9-11 Hermanos: Puesto que ustedes han resucita-do con Cristo, busquen los bienes de arriba, donde está Cristo, sentado a la derecha de Dios. Pongan todo el corazón en los bienes del cielo, no en los de la tierra, porque han muerto y su vida está escondida con Cristo en Dios. Brothers and sisters: If you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry. He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’ And he said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’ But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.” Gospel of the Lord, Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ

ONLY GOD IS GOD
There is a Spanish adage that says “greed breaks the sack;” in other words, accumulating so much can cause the bottom of the sack to give out. This means that avarice and accumulating things for ourselves does not have posi-tive consequences. Usually it is not good to be accumulat-ing because it often means cheating or climbing over oth-ers or many other objectionable things. We can see the reality of this by looking at the recent financial scandals and deceit that have benefitted large banks, insurance and mortgage companies. We witness the unfortunate consequences not just for those who are guilty of scams, but also for thousands of innocent people and economies of countries. There are people who always want to have more and more that they create gods and idols and put their entire beings at their service, and above all their intelligence and capacity to scheme and manipulate. Oftentimes, it is not just money that is sought; sometimes the desire can be to possess another person at whatever cost; and it always seems to lead to their downfall. At the end of the day, that kind of person ends up paying for their evil ways with insani-ty, prison, or death. Perhaps we may not end up in jail for
our small acts of selfishness; but we must rec-ognize that eventually, they always leave a bad taste, while generosity always seems to multiply what has been given. Today’s readings warn us over and over what should be evident, but sometimes escapes us in the small details. To struggle excessively in order to attain things doesn’t lead anywhere; it is vanity and in the end, a waste of time.
Paul exhorts us to look at the things above and Jesus insists on the craziness of those, who consider that accumulating lots of wealth means that they have it made. So why work? Are we being invited to become lazy, unconcerned, and irresponsible? No, rather, it seems that it is an invitation to examine at why things are done; to think that only God is God. We cannot transform things, positions or honors into our personal gods; this only leads to dissatisfaction, since we will never achieve enough to feel truly satisfied. We will always desire more and it will lead to problems, anguish, lies, and a lack of freedom. Sooner or later, what seemed to give us peace of mind, because it secures the future, only produces terrible uncertainty. The selfish person is not one who works and generously shares for the wellbeing of others, but one who accumu-lates time, energy, money, possessions of all types, and even people for themselves. He, who selfishly controls eve-rything, does not leave room for God or for appreciating everything received. In the end, the only thing that remains is disappointment and emptiness. It is about working for the wellbeing of others, putting all our trust only in God. For Reflection What do I work for? Do I consider that if I attain certain ma-terial things, I have it made? What is most important for me? Do I have gods that are not God?
REFLEXIÓN DOMINICAL / SUNDAY REFLECTION SOLO DIOS ES DIOS
Existe un refrán español que dice que “la avaricia rompe el saco”; es decir, que al acumular tanto, el fondo del saco se puede romper; lo cual es como decir que la avaricia y el acumular para uno mismo nunca tiene buenas consecuen-cias. Normalmente no sale bien estar acumulando, porque hay que hacer trampas, pasar por encima de otros y mil co-sas poco agradables. Vemos la verdad que se encierra en esto cuando miramos los casos de escándalo financiero y de engaños para el beneficio de grandes bancos, asegurado-ras y compañías inmobiliarias. Vemos las consecuencias fu-nestas no solo para los culpables, sino también para miles de personas inocentes y para la economía de los países. Hay gente que siempre quiere tener más y más, que se fabri-ca dioses e ídolos a su medida y pone a su servicio todo su ser y sobre todo, su inteligencia y capacidad de maquina-ción y manipulación. A veces no es solo dinero lo que se bus-ca; a veces se desea también poseer a otra persona cueste lo que cueste; eso siempre parece llevar a la ruina. Al final de cuentas, ese tipo de persona termina pagando por su mal-dad con la locura, la cárcel o la muerte. Quizá nuestros pe-queños actos de tacañería no nos lleven tan lejos como pa-ra que nos metan en la cárcel; pero tendremos que recono-cer que, eventualmente, siempre nos han dejado mal sabor de boca, mientras que la generosidad siempre parece que multiplica lo entregado. Las lecturas de hoy nos advierten una y otra vez de lo que se nos debería haber hecho eviden-te, pero que a veces se nos escapa en los pe-queños detalles. El esforzarse obsesivamente en conseguir cosas no conduce a nada; es vani-dad y en el fondo pérdida de tiempo. Pablo exhorta a mirar las cosas de arriba y Jesús insiste en la locura de quienes piensan que por tener acumuladas muchas ri-quezas ya la tienen hecha. entonces, ¿para qué trabajar? ¿Se nos invita a la flojera, la despreocupación y la falta de responsabilidad? No, parece, más bien, que la invitación es a mirar por qué se hacen las cosas; a pensar que solo Dios es Dios y que no podemos hacer de las cosas, ni de las posicio-nes, ni de los honores, nuestros dioses personales; esto, lo úni-co que eso produce es insatisfacción, porque nunca se al-canzará lo suficiente como para satisfacerse uno mismo. Siempre se querrá más y eso llevará a más problemas, angus-tias, mentiras y falta de libertad. Tarde o temprano, lo que parecía que iba a dar la tranquilidad de asegurarse el futuro, produce una terrible inseguridad. El avaro no es el que trabaja y comparte generosamente para el bien de otros, sino el que acumula para sí mismo tiempo, energía, dinero, posesiones de toda clase e incluso personas. Quien todo lo tiene controlado por sí mismo no deja espacio a Dios ni a la gratitud por todo lo que se recibe y al final, lo único que queda es insatisfacción y vacío. Se trata de trabajar por el bien de los demás, poniendo toda la confianza únicamente en Dios.
Para la Reflexión ¿Por qué cosas me esfuerzo? ¿Pienso que si consigo algu-nas cosas materiales ya la tengo hecha? ¿Qué es lo más importante para mí? ¿Tengo dioses que no son Dios?

Solo Para Jóvenes… / Youth Corner... 30 PIECES: WHAT ARE

They paid him thirty pieces of silver, and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to hand him over.
The day before the Triduum, I was supposed to wake up at 5 am in order to have time to eat, have coffee, get ready, say a prayer, maybe have some more coffee, and be out of the door by 6 am. I woke up at 5:52 am. This spiraled me into such anger about being late and having to get up at the (butt) crack of dawn. I had to put on my heels so that I could let out my frustration on the hardwood floor as I ran around the house like
a mad woman.
At 6:30 am, I found myself sitting in mass, still frustrated, but with myself for getting so angry in the first place. This cycle of frustration and then relentlessly beating myself up about my own frustration has been going on for a while now…it’s hap-pened about 3 times this week alone. But at this mass, I heard a homily that really spoke to my heart.
The priest was talking about the betrayal of Christ. Judas gives Christ away for 30 pieces of sil-ver. He spoke of how Jesus laid down His own life and gave Himself freely. There were countless times in Scripture where the crowds were ready to arrest Jesus then and there, but Jesus always managed to slip away. He illustrated that Je-sus in the midst of Judas’ betrayal could have once again slipped away, but He chose not to. The priest went on to state that Judas was really selling himself for 30 piec-es of silver, not Christ. Judas sold his own conscience, his own heart.
I began to think about how sad this reality was. It’s easy to see how Jesus Christ is worth more than 30
pieces of silver, but Judas as well is worth more than 30 pieces of sil-ver. Each person in this world is worth more than that, but how of-ten do we not see it? How often do we allow our own self condem-nation rob us of the worthiness of love we possess? Christ has al-ready given all that He is to show us He loves us. So often I see myself and others selling themselves short, selling themselves for 30 pieces of silver because we’re too focused on our sin, our weaknesses instead of looking at ourselves as Jesus does, with eyes of mercy. We can sell our hearts into the slavery of self-hatred, judgment, guilt, condem-nation…fill in the blank.
But our hearts have been won. Our dark-ness has been defeated, and true love and light are shining. It’s time to lay down the ways I block Christ’s love and allow His love to show me my worthiness. I pray and hope for a resurrection of mercy in your own hearts, for others and for yourself, that you may truly enter into the beauty of who you are.

¿Porqué debo votar?
No. La Iglesia no nos dice por quién votar cuan-do entramos en la cabina de votación. No apoya ninguna lista oficial de candidatos ni nos dice a cuál partido político deben unirse los católicos. En cambio, los católicos deben usar su criterio y seguir su conciencia para aplicar las enseñanzas de nuestro Señor Jesucristo y los valores funda-mentales de la fe en las decisiones que toman en la cabina de votación. Como católicos, siguiendo el camino difícil del discipula-do, tenemos que evaluar los temas y los candidatos a la luz de nuestra fe católica. Entonces, tenemos el reto de vivir nuestra fe involucrándonos activamente- por me-dio del voto y participando en otras actividades cívi-cas ...

Why should I vote?
No. The Church does not tell us whom to vote for when we enter the voting booth. It does not endorse an official list of candidates or tell us which party Catholics should join. Instead, Catholics are to use their judgment and follow their consciences as they apply the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ and the core faith values to the choices they make in the voting booth.
As Catholics, following the challenging path of disciple-ship, we need to evaluate the issues and candidates in the light of our Catholic faith. Then, we are challenged to live out our faith by getting actively involved — by voting and engaging in other civic activities..

“You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you” (Luke 12:20)
Hardly sounds like mercy! Unlike some contem-porary rich folks, there is no indication of lying, stealing, or cheating in Jesus’ parable. The rich
man made a living, not a killing. Why does Jesus name him “fool”? First, because of presumption. Five times in nine verses, the rich man declares, “I shall.” God’s not in charge here, I am! Second, selfishness—four times, “my/myself.” No God, no neighbor; he talks to himself, about himself: my pos-sessions, my productivity, my plans! So, instead of chasing “treasure for ourselves,” Jesus and Pope Francis’ Jubilee Year of Mercy bid us grow “rich in what matters to God” (12:21), namely, the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Give food, drink, cloth-ing, and healing; visit the imprisoned; bury the dead. Heal with Jesus’ own gentleness the doubt, igno-rance, and sins of others; comfort, forgive, be pa-tient; and pray for the living and dead.

“‘¡Insensato!’ Esta misma noche vas a morir” (Lucas 12:20)
¡Esto no suena misericordioso! En esta parábola de Jesús, a diferencia de algunas personas ricas de es-tos tiempos, no hay mención de mentir, robar o en-gañar. El hombre rico se ganaba la vida, no es un asesino. ¿Qué es lo que Jesús le quiere decir por “insensato”? Pri-mero, por arrogante. El hombre rico diciendo lo que va a hacer. Dios no está a cargo de la situación sino el hombre rico. Segundo, por egoísta. No hay mención de Dios, del prójimo; él hombre rico se habla así mismo de él mismo: ¡mis posesiones, mi productividad, mis planes! Así que en lugar de desear “abundancia de bienes” para nosotros; Jesús y el Papa Francisco en este Año Jubilar de la Miseri-cordia nos proponen crecer en aquello que “vale ante Dios” (12:21), es decir las obras de misericordia corporales y espirituales. Dar de comer, de beber, vestir y sanar; visi-tar a los prisioneros, enterrar a los muertos. Sanar con la misma gentileza de Jesús la duda, la ignorancia y las cul-pas de los prójimos, confortar, perdonar, ser paciente y orar por los vivos y los muertos.

However, parents should start every visit to the park with a discussion with their kids about safe-ty plan. Kids should know what to do if a stranger were to approach them, and who to go to if they feel uncom-fortable or threatened. Public parks are a great place to play, but they are exposed to the public. Having a safe-ty plan in place can help parents and kids feel secure and play safely this summer. TRANSFIGURACIÓN DE JESÚS
Fiesta: 6 de Agosto
Narra el santo Evangelio (Lc. 9, Mc. 6, Mt. 10) que unas semanas antes de su Pasión y Muerte, subió Jesús a un monte a orar, llevando consigo a sus tres discí-pulos predilectos, Pedro, Santiago y Juan. Y mientras oraba, su cuerpo se transfiguró. Sus vestidos se volvieron más blancos que la nieve, y su rostro más resplandeciente que el sol. Y se apare-cieron Moisés y Elías y hablaban con El acerca de lo que le iba a suceder pró-ximamente en Jerusalén.
Pedro, muy emocionado exclamó: -Señor, si te parece, hacemos aquí tres campamentos, uno para Ti, otro para Moisés y otro para Elías.
Pero en seguida los envolvió una nube y se oyó una voz del cielo que decía: "Este es mi Hijo muy amado, escuchad-lo".
El Señor llevó consigo a los tres apósto-les que más le demostraban su amor y su fidelidad. Pedro que era el que más trabajaba por Jesús; Juan, el que tenía el alma más pura y más sin pecado; Santiago, el más atrevido y arriesgado en declararse amigo del Señor, y que sería el primer apóstol en derramar su sangre por nuestra religión. Jesús no invitó a todos los apóstoles, por no llevar a Judas, que no se merecía esta visión. Los que viven en pecado no reciben muchos favores que Dios concede a los que le permanecen fieles. Se celebra un momento muy especial de la vida de Jesús: cuando mostró su gloria a tres de sus apóstoles. Nos dejó un ejemplo sensible de la gloria que nos espera en el cielo.
¿Qué nos enseña este acontecimiento?
Nos enseña a seguir adelante aquí en la tierra aunque tengamos que sufrir, con la esperanza de que Él nos espera con su gloria en el Cielo y que vale la pena cualquier sufrimiento por alcan-zarlo.
A entender que el sufrimiento, cuando se ofrece a Dios, se convierte en sacrifi-cio y así, éste tiene el poder de salvar a las almas. Jesús sufrió y así se despren-dió de su vida para salvarnos a todos los hombres. A valorar la oración, ya que Jesús constantemente oraba con el Padre.
A entender que el Cielo es algo que hay que ganar con los detalles de la vida de todos los días.
A vivir el mandamiento que Él nos dejó: “Amaos los unos a los otros como Yo os he amado”.
Habrá un juicio final que se basará en el amor, es decir, en cuánto hayamos amado o dejado de amar a los demás. Dios da su gracia a través de la oración y los sacramentos. Su gracia puede suplir todas nuestras debilidades.
