Doorways for Women and Families

Purpose

The purpose of this service project was to help families who were in need of food. A large group of people got together in a homeless shelter to make different types of food for those in need. These people were extremely poor and had no where to go. The shelter took them in and invited people to help take care of them.

What I Did:

First, I helped other prepared large amounts of food for the people in the shelter. After all of the food was prepared, we made a buffet style line to hand out the food. The people in the shelter lined up and received the food we had made for them. We did this for several hours and saw that everyone was very grateful and appreciative that we had come in their time of need.

What I learned:

From volunteering, I learned that many people are less fortunate than I am. Because of this, I learned to volunteer to those less fortunate. Just working half a day to prepare a meal for these people could have saved their lives. Each person I helped showed great appreciation and left with a big smile on their face. The project made me feel like good about myself, especially since it was a simple and easy gesture that meant everything to these needy people.
