RABBI STRAUCHLER’S SHABBAT HAGADOL DRASHA

PESACH MATTERS

HIDDEN DESIGNSHIDDEN DESIGNSHIDDEN DESIGNSHIDDEN DESIGNS

Being a Jew is a blessing; however, being a Jew is not easy. We know this in our day, as we work to bring in Pesach. We often don’t reflect on the added complexity in the days in which the laws of purity and impurity applied. Our parsha, describes the consequences of tzaraat. A person who found tzaraat upon the walls of his or her home would (upon a kohen’s orders) remove the stones upon which the tzaraat was found. In this situation, to be a Jew meant to literally deconstruct one’s house.

How terribly di@cult it must have been to see one’s home destroyed in this way! Rashi oJers a stunning comment to this obviously stressful moment, “Because the Amorites hid gold in the walls of their homes (before the Jewish people conquered them), God sent tzaraat upon the houses so that the Jewish people might find these treasures.” Rashi explains that what appeared to be a curse was in fact a blessing.

This Shabbat, I will give a Shabbat HaGadol Drasha on the topic of anti-Semitism and Pesach. We will ask the eternal question, “Why do they hate us?”

Rabbi Naftali Tzvi Yehuda Berlin (1817-1893) in his Imrei Shefer commentary to the Haggadah makes a startling claim about the horrible hatred toward our people. “When Jews seek to assimilate, the peoples of the world separate from them and persecute them.” He explains Pharaoh’s oppression with this insight, and he argues that God continues to engineer hatred toward our people so that we remain distinct. He claims that this is the meaning of vehi sheamda. The commitment that God made to Avraham was not simply that God would redeem Avraham’s children. God committed to preserve us by inciting enemies against us – from which God would protect us.

We cannot comprehend the ways of God. We cannot explain the human disease that is anti-Semitism. Yet, our sages try to understand and even see blessing in what on the surface is the absolute opposite. We face the scourge of anti-Semitism, once more. We must seek meaning in this eternal struggle. We must find blessing in God’s destiny for our people.
