Secret of shampoo

ShampooShampooWe use shampoo almost every day to remove sebum on our scalps.Shampoo helps your hair to become shiny and manageable. It is obvious that shampoo is useful. However, did you know shampoo has negative effects due to synthetic surfactants?Let me first introduce what a synthetic surfactant is and how it works.

What is a synthetic surfactant?

Surfactant is also called surface-active agent. It is the prime ingredient of shampoo. Most of Shampoo contains synthetic surfactants instead of natural surfactants which are more expensive.

How do surfactants work? The hydrophobic end secures itself in the oily layer of sebum while the hydrophilic end remains anchored in water. As the hair is rinsed, the soiled sebum is washed away.(Schwarcz)

Now I will talk about negative effects of synthetic surfactants in shampoo. Negative effect 1- hair lossAfter shampooing, If you do not rinse enough with water, synthetic surfactants will remain on yourscalp. And then the synthetic surfactants irritate your scalp. This can make your scalp have irritant contact dermatitis. Consequently, irritant contact dermatitis causes hair loss.

Negative effect 2- creating toxins in your body.Especially two kinds synthetic surfactants, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), are widely used to produce shampoo. Those two surfactantseasily penetrate into the skin, and stay in the liver, heart, lungs and brain for 5 days creating toxins.Negative effect 3- Protein denaturationSynthetic surfactants cause protein denaturation in cell.Negative effect 4- Dysfunction of liver.synthetic surfactants can make liver dysfunctional.

What can we do to be less affected by negative effects of synthetic surfactants?

What can we do? (1)We should avoid overuse of shampoo. Two pumps are recommended.

What can we do? (2)We should rinse thoroughly after shampooing.

What can we do? (3)We can replace with shampoo that contains natural surfactants instead of synthetic surfactants.
