Apex International Academy draws inspiration from the depth and richness of Chinese culture - the many gifts it has given the world through the ages, and the wisdom it holds for the future. As such, we recognize the context of students studying in China and take advantage of the unique opportunities of being in the center of economic development, while nur turing an understanding of China’s unique cultural heritage and values.

The APEX Spirit incorporates the classical Chinese values of knowledge, wisdom and prosperity as we commit to making a contribution to the lives of our young people who live in this transformational age of technological progress and globalization - where the only thing that is constant is ‘change’.

APEX is committed to continuous innovation, staying at the forefront of thinking in the global education community and being involved with our young people in service and action that makes a difference to others and to the challenges facing our planet.

The APEX Spirit is reflected in our rich school environment, which features cutting edge contemporary design, embracing modern and traditional influences, while celebrating Chinese culture.

What’s in a Name?

Our Chinese name “Ding Yu” is deep in meaning-‘Ding’ ( 顶 ) refers to being at the top, or being the best, while ‘Yu’ ( 誉 )is formed from the two characters ‘Xing’ and ‘Yan’. ‘Xing’ ( 兴 )refers to how the educated will be enlightened through appropriate inspiration, while ‘Yan’( 言 )refers to the words of a teacher. Together, ‘Yu’ speaks of promoting students’ imagination and innovation through a fostering of imagination. Our name “Ding Yu” reflects our ultimate educational objective - “quality education.”

Our English name draws from the Latin word ‘apexes’ and refers to the highest point that can be reached.

Together, our Chinese and English names merge to encapsulate what it is we do - our profound aspiration to provide a truly unique education that inspires and challenges while evolving in response to the ever changing world around us.

Our logo is designed around a stylized ‘A’ that represents the tall mountains so often represented in classical Chinese paintings. This mountain, standing shoulder to shoulder with many others has a strong, unshakable foundation. It is covered with trees growing in knowledge and understanding, its surfaces shaped by the elements and life’s experiences as they reach towards the summit, piercing through the highest clouds.

From this vantage point we look out across the world in all its wonder. Those who work hard and persevere in order to reach this pinnacle are strong in both character and spirit, able to fulfil their dreams and aspirations. We challenge and support each student to develop fully as an individual and reach great heights.

Welcome to Apex International Academy, an exciting new 21st century international school of the future scheduled to open in the Fengtai district of Beijing. The 38,000 square meter school enjoys a unique college campus environment set in picturesque Wanfeng Park, overlooking the Wanfeng River.

Apex International Academy merges the face-to-face and vir tual learning environments that suppor t student learning styles. In doing so, APEX extends the teacher-student and student-student learning interface beyond the formal school day and provides parents with online access to detailed information about student achievement. In our dynamic physical environment, the campus features a Performing and Visual Arts Center, Sports Center, Library, Information and Media Center, ‘Teahouse’ China Studies Center along with cafes and public galleries.

Apex International Academy is a community school and values the par tnership between school and home. We live in a world of unprecedented and exponential change. We have witnessed an explosion of information, new technologies, digital communications, as well as economic and cultural globalization. The oppor tunities available to us can often be overshadowed by the complexity and demands of daily life, global issues of pover ty, health and conflict, human rights and the environment.

In today’s rapidly changing, globally-interconnected world, it is becoming increasingly difficult to know exactly what education is needed to prepare our children for the future workforce. It is anticipated that many of today’s high paying jobs will soon disappear and many of the industries and jobs in which our children will work, do not yet exist.

Predictions abound that nearly half of all current jobs in the USA and other developed economies will be susceptible to computerization by 2035. This requires our students to develop an unique adaptability, an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit, and specific future ready skills and attitudes that are not part of traditional school curriculums.

The International Baccalaureate is more than its educational programmes, diplomas and certificates. At its heart is the motivation to create a better world through education. Student Centered – Learning Centered

Apex International Academy understands the power of digital technologies in enhancing the educational experience and enabling students to collaborate and share their work as part of a global digital learning community. At APEX we provide a sophisticated IT-rich environment. Learning is integrated within the physical and vir tual environments, which are available and supported throughout the week in the classroom, from home and on the move.

Technology plays a vital role in enhancing learning and empowering students to develop their higher order thinking skills. Applications include using a mix of software and hardware to compose and record a multi-track musical, using digital technology to track and evaluate movements and develop problem-solving skills in a physical education class, or computer modeling and printing a 3D prototype of a running shoe. By integrating technology into the environment and curriculum, the possibilities are endless.

Each student is required to have a laptop and an iPad as core digital devices used to create, collaborate, communicate and access digital resources. The school is also equipped with labs and studios to support teachers and students using these devices and empowers users to enhance their learning experience.

Apex International Academy’s learning resources are made available to students and parents via the web through our vir tual ‘Collaborative Online Learning Environment’ or ‘COLE’. COLE includes overviews, course content, video tutorials and micro lessons, assessments, calendars as well as student por tfolios and student progress repor ts, and is available through secure internet access to both students and parents. The system provides real-time, collaborative, online communication and a supportive environment between teachers, students and parents. It also provides 24/7 access to the school’s library, media and information services and to many specialized databases and subscriptions.

Digital Technology is also taught as a stand-alone subject within the curriculum from Grades 6 to 10. Dedicated technology coaches assist teachers in the effective use of technology throughout the curriculum. ‘Tech Coaches’ are available to students, staff and other members of the school community to develop technology skills in many different areas including digital media, design, programming and coding, and animation. Advanced and enrichment courses incorporating advanced level use of technology will also be offered through the extra-curricular and vacation programmes.

Students learn the skills and responsibilities of being a global citizen and to be conscious of both digital balance in their lives and their global digital footprint. As technology continues to advance at an increasingly rapid rate, high level digital literacy will be an assumed ability by future employers.

We aim to develop in our students a robust and agile digital skillset to ensure they have a competitive edge in the future job market. Our approach to digital technologies provides students with an adaptable set of foundation skills to ensure they are capable of embracing the jobs of the future that, as of yet, do not exist.

Global Languages and Culture – English and Chinese

Proficiency in English and Chinese are recognized as key skills in today’s world and are a core aspect of the APEX programme. Students work in an environment where they learn to think and study in English while still participating in a rigorous Chinese language programme. APEX provides suppor t and specialist teachers to allow students to reach their language goals. We also recognize the value of Chinese culture and identity and thus provide unique programmes that lead to a richer understanding and appreciation of these and one’s self within a global context.

English LanguageThe APEX English language suppor t programme is designed to provide additional support to students who already have a sufficient entry level English proficiency. This suppor t assists students to reach the required proficiency level to fully engage with, and be successful in, the school’s programmes within their first 18 months at school.

The language support programme includes in-class and pullout support. Individual support is also provided via mentoring and one-on-one meetings. Homework and study support is provided through learning labs, on-line study support and study hall.

Apex International Academy will also provide a variety of summer and vacation English immersion programmes to support English proficiency. These programmes are available during the vacation period prior to the beginning of each academic year and also during vacation periods while studying at APEX.

Chinese LanguageChinese language is available as both a study of literature (mother tongue speakers) and as a language acquisition course (Chinese as an additional language).

Apex International Academy’s school environment blends modern and traditional influences to a create a rich and exciting learning space that celebrates Chinese culture. The Teahouse China Studies Centre provides a space for cultural focus and is the site of ever changing exhibitions, cultural studies, workshops, guest speakers and artists in residence.

The China Studies programme is delivered through stand-alone study units and is also carefully integrated within all subjects in the curriculum through the concept of China engagement and the IB model of trans-disciplinary themes. In Art, for example, students study ceramics as a way to develop a deeper appreciation of Chinese philosophy, tea culture and design, creating their own ceramics in the process. In physical education, Tai Qi is incorporated not just as an activity, but as an appreciation of the important principles of health, control and philosophy. In these ways, students do more than just learn about Chinese heritage and traditions, they experience it - developing a deeper understanding of the topic and themselves.

Supporting Learning

APEX provides a comprehensive approach to supporting students in their learning. Our services, which include English Language Support, Enrichment, Special Learning Needs Suppor t and Counseling and Health Services, assist students in achieving success in the school’s programmes. APEX specialists work with families to discuss individual student needs, collaborating on strategies for support, differentiation and to empower optimum student learning. Students can access these services through self-referral or by request from teachers or parents.

Support is offered through in-class support using the inclusion model and pullout suppor t. Individual suppor t is also provided through mentoring and one-on-one meetings. Homework and study support is provided through learning labs, on-line study support and study hall.

Pastoral Care is provided by Homeroom Teachers to suppor t students in their organization skills, discuss emergent issues and suppor t personal and character development. This occurs throughout the school as well as at scheduled Pastoral Care classes.

The Pastoral Care programme is an essential time for students and teachers to be together. During this time, teachers serve as mentors and have the opportunity to get to know their students outside of the assessed academic subject areas. It ensures that each student has a close professional relationship with at least one adult in the school.

A key focus of Pastoral Care classes is on building relationships between teachers and students as well as relationships between students. Pastoral Care time also allows for incidental teaching of highly important issues, e.g. bullying, study skills, peer pressure, community and service projects, goal setting and self-management.

Assemblies also form a par t of the pastoral care structure and provide opportunities for student leadership, acknowledgement of individual and group achievement and developing a sense of group belonging.

Counselors are a critical part of creating a safe, inclusive and supportive school community, forming strong and trusting relationships with students and families. They work closely with teachers, administrators and other support services to support the social, emotional and academic needs of students. Counselors work at a variety of levels to support teaching and learning in the classroom. They also provide a range of support, such as peer mentoring and regular parent workshops.

Exciting Life Experiences

Extra-Curricular

Summer Programme

Apex International Academy focuses on the holistic and balanced development of each student and provides a wide range of activities designed to enrich the life experiences and social and physical development of each student.

Extracurricular activities extend students’ interests and abilities, providing opportunities for building relationships, cooperation and leadership, and help to develop healthy, balanced young people. They promote an active lifestyle, the development of social and interpersonal skills and encourage students to make positive lifestyle choices, manage time effectively and develop leadership skills.

The extra-curricular activities programme covers all areas of student interest including student leadership, community service, athletics, the arts and cultural groups. Programmes are available for students before school, lunchtime, after school, evenings, weekends and vacations. Our extra- curricular programme also includes par ticipation in interschool spor ts tournaments, arts festivals and special events throughout the year.

Apex International Academy provides a summer programme designed to offer exciting options aimed at extending, diversifying, and accelerating learning from the academic school year. It allows students to explore new learning paths not available through existing course offerings.

The ultimate wish of any parent is for their child to be a good person and to have happiness, health and success. We understand that character and values can’t be learned from a book - they need to be modeled, talked about and lived. Our extra curricular programme, ‘Service as Action’ and outdoor experiential learning programmes foster character growth and provide the opportunity for every student to develop their leadership skills.

The oppor tunities for learning at Apex International Academy extend far beyond the classroom and into both the community and outdoors. Apex's community service programmes provide opportunities to engage in challenge- based learning by exploring issues and needs within their community, developing plans, and taking action to make a difference. Outdoor education experiences are designed to allow students to disconnect from the technology and the distractions of daily life and connect with nature. Outdoor challenge-based learning and self-management activities are designed to promote independence and self-discovery as well as build resilience, collaboration and leadership.

Through these programmes, students grow personally, develop international mindedness, learn new skills, engage in leadership, work collaboratively, learn to persevere, and reflect on their actions. We aspire to create environments that people are inspired and excited to come to each day, are busy and intensely engaged with and never want to leave. Our learning community includes the social and emotional, physical, and virtual environments.

We strive to provide a caring and suppor tive environment that encourages students to ask questions, be innovative and make mistakes. A foundation of environment is caring relationships. Our pastoral care programme is designed to make sure there are teachers looking out for your child – that they are eating well, interacting socially, have friends, are happy, enjoying learning and keeping up with their learning activities and ultimately achieving to their potential. We do this through an interconnected pastoral care web of teachers, homeroom teachers, grade level leaders, specialist suppor t teachers and principals who discuss student issues and individual student concerns. Our counselors provide expert support to teachers, students and parents as needed.

Research in neuroscience has taught us much about how the brain learns. Learning needs to be relevant, active and meaningful in order to reach deeper learning.

In today’s world of on-demand access to the world’s knowledge and rich media content, people are always learning. Today’s schools are challenged to teach relevant subjects and to take up the challenge of teaching in ways that engage and extend students in their learning.

It is hard to drink in a deser t, and we believe it is hard to be inspired or be creative in an environment that is grey and lifeless. We take great care to create a stimulating learning environment that provokes inquiry and appreciation and that responds to the different styles of learning, while also reflecting an appreciation for Chinese cultural heritage. While our environment is aesthetically pleasant, the choices of color, design, furniture and layout of spaces are also very purposeful. The APEX environment is designed to suppor t collaboration, activity and interaction. Our ergonomically sound work tables and benches, for example, come in all shapes and sizes and allow students to sit and stand - making every space in the school a place and a space for learning.

We believe in creating a collaborative learning community for students, staff, parents and friends. To achieve this, Apex International Academy has conceptualized the Global Learning Center, a central hub for ‘people’ to come together and connect, learn, share, play and celebrate. This hub concept integrates an Ar ts Center, ‘STEAM’ science, ar t and technology center, the ‘Einstein’ Media, Communication and Research Center, the Global Studies Institute and Sports Center - all connected by galleries, lounges, quiet spaces, cafes and restaurants.

The Apex International Academy state-of-the art ‘STEAM Center’ will provide a focus in the integration of digital tools and literacies in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Design, and Mathematics to explore, design and create.

At APEX, we recognize that in the 21st century, we all have access to information at our fingertips, wherever and whenever we want it. We extend this access with a wide range of e-books and on-line subscription services. The school re-invents the concept of the library to one where the whole school is a walk through library and physical and e-books are located in pods throughout the school’s ‘public’ spaces, thus creating open reading and working lounges complete with collaborative and individual workspaces, as well as spaces for quiet reading and reflection.

The Einstein Media and Research Center provides a central Information and creation hub for the school. It incorporates a community meeting space, complete with a coffee shop bookstore concept, promoting socializing, networking, reading and the sharing of ideas.

The ‘working edge’ of the Einstein Media and Research Center, though, is found in the collaborative and creative suites, which are supported by teacher librarians, research assistants and IT support staff. The center includes green screen recording studios, video conferencing suites and team meeting suites.

The Media and Research Center also includes presentation and forum spaces as a focus for guest presentations and performances. This is located adjacent to the Performing Arts Center and Gallery, which hosts ar t and project exhibits together with presentations such as TEDx, visiting guest speakers, conferences and full-scale dramatic and musical performances. Practice music suites are also located within the Arts Center.

Open to our community, The Einstein Media and Research Center, together with the Arts Center, Sports and Aquatics Center, Teahouse China Studies Center, cafes and restaurants, form the core of the Apex Community experience.

In today’s world, the physical and vir tual worlds exist simultaneously. We have designed our synergistic, on-line learning environment to mirror and enhance our physical learning, collaboration and display spaces, as well as our interactions between teachers, students and parents.

Our programmes are available to students and parents through ‘COLE’, our ‘collaborative online learning environment’. This blended learning environment enables students to prepare for lessons, revise work, receive homework support, track assignment and test dates, join study forums, study for tests and also provides live assessment results and feedback.

COLE also includes curriculum content, including course overviews, lesson details, digital resources, teacher video tutorials, assessment deadlines and a personalized study calendar. Students can interact with teachers through ‘Study Help’ the on-line study support help desk, and can also join on-line homework discussion groups.

COLE provides real-time, collaborative online communication and a suppor t environment between teachers, students and parents, as well as access to the school’s library, media and information services and to many specialized databases and subscriptions.

Our collaborative online learning platform is designed to keep parents informed with their child’s learning and progress. At the same time, the school’s communications systems and social media presences are designed to keep parents in the loop with what’s happening in our busy school community.

Community is at the heart of our school. We embrace everyone as a member of our community - students, staff and parents - working, playing and celebrating together. We are more than a school; we are a community center that serves the needs and interests of parents as well as students.

We recognize that parents are a child’s first teacher and are their teacher for life. Many people are involved with the education of a child, and although teachers and schools take on a large responsibility in this, we believe that the process works best as a partnership between the school and home. We encourage parents to be partners in their child’s development and an active part of our community as we work together to be the village that cares for, nurtures, and mentors your child.

Apex International Academy is committed to providing a caring and supportive environment. The Apex International Academy programme is designed to suppor t students to gain entrance to overseas universities and to be successful not only at university but also later on in their careers and lives.

Entrance to university requires making decisions about career directions, courses of study and getting ready to live independently, often in a new country. It requires academic success, English language proficiency, maturity, independence and life skills.

The IB Diploma programme is highly regarded by universities worldwide and provides a strong foundation for success at university and in life. Students with high IB results gain entrance to the world’s top universities, often with advanced placement and scholarships offered.

The IB system of predicted scores helps inform students about which universities and programmes they can expect to be successful in applying to, and which schools may award scholarships and advanced credit.

APEX’s extra-curricular, leadership and community service programmes provide students with the experiences to present themselves as ‘stand out’ students in their applications and university interviews.

University counseling assists students and their families with planning for university. This includes career planning, college/university selection and applications, work-experience, mentoring and life experience workshops. APEX counselors work with each student and family to identify university goals and work with teachers and coordinators to help students achieve them.

Counselors work with students with the timing and step-by-step process of making university applications, including application and recommendation letters, preparing for and taking ACT tests, and managing IB predicted scores and university acceptances. APEX also makes arrangements for the ACT and other programmes, including preparation courses to help students achieve their best results.

Each year, APEX organizes a number of universities from North America, the UK and Asia to visit the campus to help students raise awareness of the range of university options available and gain a sense of university life by speaking directly with university representatives. APEX also organizes vacation study trips to selected universities each summer.
