The two women, Saunders the maid and Mrs. King the cook told their story clearlyenough.

They had been aroused from their sleep by the sound of an explosion, which hadbeen followed a minute later by a second one that was not as loud.

They slept in adjoining rooms, and Mrs. King had rushed in to Saunders.

Together they had descended the stairs.

The door of the study was open and a candle was burning upon the table.

Their master lay upon his face in the centre of the room. He was quite dead.

Near the window his wife was crouching, her head leaning against the wall.

She was horribly wounded, and the side of her face was red with blood. She breathedheavily, but was incapable of saying anything.

The passage, as well as the room, was full of smoke and the smell of powder. The window was certainly shut and fastened upon the inside. Both women werepositive upon the point. They had at once sent for the doctor and for the constable.

Detective Fiction Genre: a novel or short story in which a mystery is solved

mainly by the action of a professional or amateur detective. Where the mysteryto be solved concerns a crime, the work may be called crime fiction.

The traditional formula for the detective story starts with a seeminglyirresolvable mystery, typically a murder, features the astute, oftenunconventional detective, a wrongly accused suspect to whom thecircumstantial evidence points, and concludes with a startling or unexpectedsolution to the mystery, during which the detective explains how he or shesolved the mystery.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created by Scottish author and physician Sir

Arthur Conan Doyle. perhaps the most popular fictional sleuth, SherlockHolmes, who first appeared in A Study in Scarlet(1887).

Holmes is famous for his astute logical reasoning, his ability to take almost any

disguise, and his use of forensic science skills to solve difficult cases.

Doyle said that the character of Sherlock Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, for whom Doyle had worked as a clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Like Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing large conclusions from the smallest

    observations

    LOGIC

Deductive reasoning is one of the most valuable skills a student can have whenworking to prove a mathematical theorem, analyzing literature, or taking a

    standardized test.

Deductive reasoning is what allows a student to discover the correct answer to aquestion he or she may not have been anticipating.

At its most basic level, it is simply applying larger truths and over-arching facts

to smaller questions to arrive at the logical answers.

Deductive reasoning is how theorems are proven in mathematics and howSherlock Holmes solve his cases.

Deductive reasoning can be taught, but it is its regular practice that yields thebenefits to students.

The brain acts like a muscle and exercising it through logic, analysis, and

critical thinking is what gives it the strength to question, to learn, and to

    discover.
