Despite being a smaller city than

many of the world’s leading art

centres, Oslo has an impressive

reputation when it comes to galleries

and specialist auction houses. They

are testament to a city that works

hard to recognise the work of past

and present native artists and which

also pays homage to international

creatives. The city’s exhibition

spaces offer visitors the opportunity

to learn about Norwegian art history

as well as to experience the work of

the best contemporary names,

providing valuable insight for anyone

who is looking to invest in a piece of

Tjuvholmen is home to celebrated

has an excellent collection of works

artist Peder Lund has a gallery in

Oslo, as does Pushwagner, a

controversial pop artist whose

vibrant works deal with issues of

modern cultural excess.

To put such contemporary

names into context, a visit to the

National Gallery is essential. With a

strong focus on Norwegian artists

and the best collection of Edvard

Munch paintings in Oslo, it provides

a clear overview of Norwegian art

history. It also boasts the nation-

defining painting ‘Brudeferd i

Hardanger’ by Adolf Tidemand and

Hans Fredrik Gude who are

recognised as two of Norway’s most

important 19th-century artists, a

selection of Nikolai Astrup’s

colourful woodcut prints depicting

Norwegian landscape scenes, and

the experimental small-scale

paintings of Peder Balke.

Taking their lead from the

Norwegian masters, a host of

dynamic artists command

considerable attention in the modern

and contemporary sphere. Håkon

Bleken is one of the most prominent

Norwegian artists of the last 40 years

and has had immense influence on

contemporary art while Per Kleiva is

credited with taking pop culture in

an explicitly political direction.

Inger Sitter, a pioneer of

Norwegian abstract art, she is one

of the country’s most revered

female artists.

To make a piece of Oslo’s art

history your own, head to the

Blomqvist auction house, one of the

best places in the city to view and

buy art from different periods. It

frequently has prints by Munch and

Astrup, as well as an impressive

Scandinavian furniture and design

department. Alternatively, Oslo

Kunsthandel was started by three

experts, all with previous experience

at Blomqvist. It deals in historic and

contemporary art and aims to create

a social meeting place in its gallery as

part of the buying experience. With

a similar feel, Kunstnernes Hus,

which is found in one the city’s most

beautiful buildings, has a popular

restaurant and holds an annual sale

featuring works by artists who have

not exhibited before.

which represents Olav Christopher

Jenssen, one of Norway’s most

important contemporary artists;

1857, an artist-run exhibition space

specialising in work by young artists;

and OSL Contemporary for pieces

by conceptual artists including AK

Dolven and Dag Erik Elgin.

Aside from the many innovative

artist-run galleries and studio

schemes in Oslo, there are also

several free public art spaces around

the city. The famous Vigeland

museum and park is a stunning

destination, whose 200 statues by

Gustav Vigeland represent a life’s

work. Meanwhile, at Ekebergparken,

over 31 sculptures are dotted

amongst panoramic city views – a

vista that supposedly inspired

Munch’s Scream; the park is an ever-

evolving tribute to some

of the most innovative artists

working today.

And for a final artistic flourish,

don’t miss Grünerløkka, in the east

of the city. With a youthful, hipster

feel, this area has become an

important artistic destination in

recent years and is one the best places

in which to soak up the artistic vibes

of the city. Centred around the

Akerselva river, Grünerløkka is home

to several contemporary, artist-run

galleries, performance spaces and

studios, including the not-to-be-

missed TM51 and Galleri Vulkan.

And if you’re visiting Oslo at the right

time, you may be lucky enough to

catch the seasonal S9, whose spring

exhibitions are always impressive.

guaranteed world-class art in

impressive venues

With its 1970s Nordic décor

and special atmosphere, Fuglen

is one of the most stylish cafés

in Oslo. It stocks a range of

blends, some from local roasters

such as Tim Wendelboe and

recommended is the chai latte,

CAFÉ SOCIETYNorway has a unique approach when it comes

to cofee. Daisy Miller visits some of Oslo’s

leading roasters and cafés to fnd out more

Since the early 1990s, the coffee

scene in Oslo has turned from a

few specialist shops and niche

roasters to a city-wide passion for

the brew. The Nordic countries

roast their beans lighter than

anywhere else in the world, and

Oslo is where the very lightest

roasts and most subtle blends are

found. Most of the coffee in Oslo

is filtered or made in a stove-top

kettle and then consumed black

- sort kaffe - usually without sugar.

‘Oslo coffee is very fragrant,

bright and sweet,’ explains world

champion roaster and barista Tim

Wendelboe. ‘It is often fruity in

flavour and naturally sweet with

low bitterness.’

Every year, competitions and

awards for the best roasters and

the most skilled baristas put a

spotlight on the city’s coffee

culture. Solberg & Hansen,

Supreme Roastworks and Kaffa

are among the best roasteries; you

can find their coffee in cafés

throughout Oslo, and many

eateries now have their own

in-house roastery.

Page 33: SHOP Oslo SS16

T I M W E N D E L B O E

Renowned cofee roaster Tim

Wendelboe has won countless

awards for his cofee, and his tiny,

charming café is understandably

popular. Working on such a small

scale means the quality of the

cofee here is exemplary and each

cup is a treat for the senses. The

roasting machine takes pride of

place at the front of the shop, while

the service counter at the back has

a couple of stools to perch on while

you enjoy a cup of his signature-

blend brew. During the summer

months, don’t miss the creamy and

cold cappuccino al freddo, invented

by Wendelboe in 2007.

A true neighbourhood café, Java

is owned by roaster and barista

champion Robert Thoresen. The

beautiful green and white tiled

décor is dominated by a striking

wooden bar and, naturally, the

cofee is also outstanding. The

best beans are from the café’s sister

roastery Kafa, and the cofee is

brewed to order on a drip cone or

syphon – specialist equipment is

important here. Order a pastry

supplied by the popular Avent

One of the oldest cofee houses in

Oslo, this branch of Stockfeths

– there are several around the

city – was established in 1895 and

is a local favourite. The owners

are passionate about cofee and

the brewing here is among some

of the best in Oslo: the baristas

are famous for the distinctive way

in which they prepare each cup

– which has come to be known as

‘the Stockfeths move’ – adding

to the theatre of this classic

cofee destination. Don’t miss the

cortado, one of the few cofees in

Oslo that is served with plenty

of milk. Cosy and quirky inside,

Stockfeths has ample outdoor

seating in the summer.

HIMKOK

Since opening last year, Himkok

bar has become one of Oslo’s

coolest hangouts – and it has an

intriguing twist. Housing its own

distillery, Himkok serves three

house spirits: gin, vodka and

aquavit (a flavoured Scandinavian

spirit). It also produces its own

liqueurs, bitters and tinctures – in

total, Himkok’s own creations make

up 80% of its back bar. And with a

cocktail menu focused on local

ingredients and Norwegian

flavours, it’s easy to see why this is

one venue not to miss while in Oslo.

26: State Of The Art

Page 46: SHOP Oslo SS16

46

Vulkan.

Kunstnernes Hus
