Macquarie University
With one of the most culturally
diverse student populations in
Australia, Macquarie University has
established its global reputation
through partnerships with over 300
international universities, collaborative
research, delivery of offshore programs
and international student exchange.
Macquarie’s reputation for education
excellence continues to be reinforced by
the quality of its staff, students, teaching
methods and world-class research.
In an ongoing effort to strive for
excellence Macquarie University has
recently completed a renewal of its
undergraduate curriculum and now has
a new four faculty structure. These four
faculties are: Faculty of Business and
Economics, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of
Human Sciences and Faculty of Science.
In the new curriculum, some degree
names have been streamlined into
generalist titles such as ‘Bachelor of
Commerce’ with the opportunity for SIBT
students to major in more areas, such
as – accounting, applied econometrics,
business demographics, commercial
law, economics, finance, human
resources, international business and
marketing. SIBT students can also now
choose to do a double major when they
progress to Macquarie University.
The new curriculum will provide flexibility
and breadth, enhancing students’
learning experience and allowing them
to study subjects of interest both
inside and outside of their academic
department, – including units which
are termed ‘People’ and ‘Planet’.
‘People’ units of study focus on the
development of what it means to be
engaged, ethical, local and global citizens.
‘Planet’ units of study help students
to understand the nature of science
and the challenges and issues
facing the world at present.
It is anticipated that exciting units of
‘Participation’ will be implemented for
students who enrol from 2012 onwards.
In addition to outstanding academic
achievements and teaching facilities,
Macquarie University is rich in social,
sporting and cultural amenities, all
designed to enhance student experience.
Macquarie University opened Macquarie
City Campus in 2007. This location
gives students the opportunity to
study select Macquarie University
programs in the Sydney CBD.
SIBT students have access to
Macquarie University and Macquarie
City Campus services and facilities.

Minimum requirement is a •
pass in 8 Diploma units.
Some degree programs require •
a minimum Grade Point Average
(GPA). Refer to pages 16–19.
Australian citizens and permanent •
residents require a minimum GPA of 1.5.
A major advantage of studying in SIBT is the size of the classroom: no lecture has more than 50 students so the lecturer can give each student individual attention. I also like SIBT’s location on the Macquarie University Campus because I enjoy the same benefi ts as Macquarie University students, like the library, the computer labs, student discounts in the on-campus cafés, etc.
I have never regretted making the decision to study so far away from home. It is an enriching experience that has changed me for the better.

Important InformationAdvanced Diploma
Students are awarded an Advanced
Diploma upon successful completion
of 12 units. This includes the SIBT
Diploma (8 units) plus an additional
4 units. These additional units are
equivalent to the first semester of
second year Macquarie University.
Students will be offered a place in the
Advanced Diploma if they commence
their studies in October or graduate
from the SIBT Diploma in October. This
is because Macquarie University does
not offer classes between October and
February and the Advanced Diploma is
designed to allow students to continue
their studies at SIBT during this period.
Students who enjoy the SIBT learning
environment can also choose to continue
studying the Advanced Diploma.
Upon graduation, students progress
to the second semester of second
year of the relevant Bachelor degree
and will only need to complete a
further 1.5 years of study at Macquarie
University or Macquarie City Campus.
What is a GPA?
Each SIBT student who completes a
SIBT Diploma/Advanced Diploma will
receive a Grade Point Average (GPA).
This is a score between 0 and 4.0
that reflects the average academic
achievement during the course.
GPA calculations are relevant only
where there is a GPA requirement to
proceed to the related degree program
at Macquarie University. For example,
Bachelor of Business Administration
has a GPA entry requirement of 2.0.
GPA examples:
A student who achieves a grade of Pass •
in 8 units with no fails has a GPA of 2.0
A student who attempts 8 units •
and achieves 4 passes and
4 credits will have a GPA of 2.5
For further details and examples of
how the GPA is calculated please refer
to www.sibt.nsw.edu.au/GPA.htm
Additional notes:

Activity
8am I wake up around 7am and take the fantastic new train to Macquarie University station. During my
20-minute trip I revise my accounting lecture notes before class. Accounting is one of my best subjects
and my goal is to be an Accountant (which is why I chose Macquarie – it is famous worldwide for
Accounting!). I grab a coffee and a bagel from the SIBT ‘Globe Café’ before heading to class.
11am I have finished the first 3-hour block of an Accounting lecture of the day (we also have breaks in this time). The
lecturer was very clear in her teaching, she explained the theory well and gave practical exercises so we could further
understand what she was teaching. I am now heading to my tutorial for the same unit, which will go for about an hour.
My tutor is super friendly and very knowledgeable – he’s currently doing CPA, and I can ask him anything I need to.
12pm Lunchtime! So much choice… I usually choose between the food court (U @ MQ) on campus or go
across to Macquarie Centre, which has over 250 shops and restaurants. Today it’s U @ MQ and I am
meeting my lovely SIBT friends in the central courtyard. There are five of us in the group – from Korea,
Australia, China and India. There’s amazing diversity at SIBT and Macquarie, around 100 different
nationalities, so I have made a lot of friends from all around the world. I have Thai vegetable rice for
lunch and we talk about our upcoming tests and when we are going to meet next for study group.
1pm The next class is ISYS104 (Computing). Every week we have a quiz at the beginning of the class so
the lecturer knows if we have understood last week’s lecture. It’s great revision for me! The lecturer
always makes the class very interesting and lively. He also usually explains what we are going to
learn in practical class so this makes it so much easier when we get into this next class. In this unit,
I have learnt how to use Excel, Microsoft Word and even how to build a website from scratch!
6pm Class is over and I’m really excited because there is a Malaysian Club BBQ on at
Macquarie University Village. I love meeting new people and the students who come
along are actually from everywhere – not just Malaysia. It’s a good mix between typical
Aussie BBQ food, sausages and steak, and Malaysian food, mee goreng and curry puffs.
I meet Sally, an Australian girl who is studying a Diploma of Communication at SIBT.
She is really friendly and we make plans to meet up for a coffee next week.
9pm I say goodbye to everyone and catch the train back to my apartment. I revise
today’s lesson and quickly fall asleep! I want to get up early tomorrow to go to the
gym at Macquarie University’s Sports and Aquatic Centre after all the delicious
food I’ve eaten today!

Same Class. New Experience.
1. It’s convenient
We understand it is often easier to
get to the city, so studying some units
in the CBD could cut down travel
time and make life a little easier.
Students can take advantage of
the new railway line that operates
between Macquarie University and
Wynyard station. It’s never been
easier or quicker to travel between
campuses by public transport.
2. Experience two study lifestyles
Students can combine the
experiences of studying at Macquarie
University, with studying in the
heart of Sydney’s financial district
at Macquarie City Campus. Take
this opportunity to get more out of
your tertiary learning experience.
As the hub of Sydney’s business and
social activity, the CBD offers a variety
of options to socialise with friends
and classmates. Share lunch with
friends in Hyde Park or the Rocks,
or go to the movies after class – the
new experiences are endless.
3. Increased opportunities for part-time work
Studying in the city provides the
chance to gain part-time work close to
the campus and obtain valuable work
experience. At the same time, working
close to Macquarie City Campus means
you can more easily divide your time
between study and employment.
4. Same high quality education
It’s only the location that is different.
The unit content and exams are identical
at each campus, so wherever students
choose to study they will receive
the same high-quality education.

SIBT now has the same semester dates and one timetable across two campus locations. This means that
students can design their timetable to study some units at SIBT in the City and some at the SIBT
campus at North Ryde.
For example, a Diploma of Commerce student might choose to do a Finance unit in the city on Tuesday, Marketing
and Accounting at North Ryde on Wednesday and then head back to the City on Thursday for Computing.
Students have the flexibility to experience both campus lifestyles while still graduating with the same high-quality SIBT Diploma.
‘In this semester I designed my timetable to study two units at the City and two units at North Ryde. The campus at North Ryde has a huge range of facilities, and this combined with the smaller classes and quiet, modern learning environment in the City make my study lifestyle both convenient and always interesting! Next semester I’ll continue to study at both campuses as it makes university life more diverse and I can get more out of my time here by experiencing the advantages of both locations.’

James is now working as an Account Manager for TorchMedia,
a successful retail media firm in Sydney
After I left school, I was very unsure of my options and the direction my life was going to take. A friend suggested that I look at the SIBT website for ideas and the courses they offer. I soon enrolled in the Diploma of Commerce and rate this as one of the best life decisions I made. SIBT is an excellent stepping stone for people who didn’t quite achieve the grades to make it directly into Macquarie University.

Diploma of Arts, SIBT
Living in Sydney is such an amazing experience. How people think and what they do is just different from my country. Students at SIBT are more open-minded and tend to be more independent. This is one of the biggest advantages I have experienced. When I came to Sydney, I felt the language barrier and experienced a big culture shock. However the people around me were so friendly and I overcame this quickly with their support.

graduation from SIBT. The scholarship
includes the full payment of course fees at
Macquarie University for two years (subject
to continuing satisfactory performance at
Macquarie University). The scholarship is
awarded to three students each year.
SIBT Academic Awards

given to students who achieve outstanding
academic results and these are announced

Navitas bursary
Navitas offers financial support in the
form of family bursaries. A bursary
applies where two or more students
from the same family study with
a Navitas member institution.
The first family member can be studying
with a Navitas member institution at the
same time as other family members or
may have previously studied with any
Navitas member institution. For the
purpose of this bursary, a family member is
defined as a husband, wife, brother, sister,
mother, father, son, daughter or stepchild.
The bursary is granted to the second and
subsequent family members who study
with a Navitas member institution. The
bursary is equivalent to 10% of the tuition
fee for one program only (ie. High School,
Certificate IV, Foundation, Diploma,
Bachelor degree or Master degree with
a Navitas member institution) and is
credited to the eligible student’s tuition
fee account each semester (the amount
being relevant to the number of units
undertaken in that semester). The bursary
does not apply to additional units or
repeat units that may also be undertaken.
Please note:
1. The Navitas bursary is not applicable to English
language programs or any component of an
English language program offered by Navitas
member institutions. Please contact the relevant
Navitas member institution for more information.
2. The Navitas bursary applies to students
studying at ACN, CIC, Curtin Sydney, Curtin
Singapore, CRIC, Eynesbury, FIC, HIBT, ICM, ICP,
ICWS, LIBT, Macquarie City Campus, MIBT, MIBT

3. A completed application must be submitted to
the Navitas institution together with supporting
documents, such as birth certificate, or family
card. Application form can be obtained from the
Navitas institution where the student has enrolled.

studies at ACN, Curtin Sydney, Curtin
Singapore or Macquarie City Campus.
To be considered for the Navitas academic
merit scholarship, students must:
1. Have achieved a minimum average
of 70% in their high school final year
grades. Students who have completed
further studies, must have achieved
a minimum average of 70% in the
last 12 months of their most recent
studies to be eligible. Non-academic
subjects including physical education,
religion and languages are not
included in the assessment; and

2. Additional factors such as educational disadvantage,
membership of a specific equity group and/or

The SIBT advantage – one visa for all your studies!
SIBT can provide undergraduate
students with one visa for the entire
duration of their studies. This includes
the SIBT course, Macquarie University
Bachelor degree and English tuition,
if required. All you need to do is
complete the SIBT application form
and we will organise everything.
What should I know about an Overseas Student Visa?
Applying for a Student Visa
Prospective international students
intending to study in Australia must
obtain a student visa from an Australian
Diplomatic Mission in their home country
before embarking for Australia. Visa
regulations must be met before a student
visa is issued and these vary from
country-to-country. A SIBT
representative will be able to assist
you in applying for a visa.
To apply for a visa you will first require:
A Letter of Offer from SIBT.•
A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) •
issued by SIBT after the respective
fees and charges have been paid.
A medical check-up as required •
by immigration regulation.
Proof of financial support as required •
by immigration regulation.
Citizens of certain countries may need •
to obtain a Pre-Visa Assessment from
the Australian Diplomatic Mission
before making any payment to SIBT.
How long is my visa?
Your student visa will be issued for the
duration of the SIBT course as stated in
the CoE that you will receive from SIBT.
If you plan to continue your studies at
Macquarie University or Macquarie City
Campus, SIBT will issue a CoE for both
your SIBT and university courses.
Can I work while I study?
Permission to work in Australia will be
granted as part of the student visa.
Students can work up to 20 hours per
week while studying and full-time during
the semester breaks. The income earned
from part-time work is not adequate
to cover study and living costs.
Are there visa conditions?
Whilst studying in Australia students
MUST abide by visa conditions as
determined by the Department of
Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).
These include:
Complete course within the •
duration specified in the CoE.
Maintain satisfactory attendance •
and course progress.
Have sufficient funds to •
cover course fees and living
expenses while in Australia.
Students who wish to change •
education provider before completing
the first 6 months of their principal
course must obtain a release letter
from their institution and submit
an application to DIAC. If the visa
package includes both SIBT and
Macquarie University/Macquarie
City Campus, the principal course is
the Macquarie University degree.
Students must inform DIAC if they •
change their student status or withdraw
from the course they are enrolled in.
Students must extend their •
student visa before it expires.
Students are required to advise •
SIBT of changes to their Australian
address within 7 days.
Do I need Overseas Student Health Cover ?
It is a visa condition that all overseas
students maintain Overseas Student
Health Cover (OSHC) while in Australia.
If you have an accident or health
problem you will be able to redeem
some, or all of your medical costs.
SIBT will organise one policy for the
duration of your SIBT course and English
studies at CME or ACL (if required).
Costs are outlined on page 34.

course at no extra cost to you. Finally, if ACPET can not
place you in a suitable alternative course, the ESOS
Assurance Fund Manager will attempt to place you in
a suitable alternative course or, if this is not possible,
