Bio-Inspired Supercomputing and Big Data In order to convert data to knowledge, it is necessary to search (+ process) data sets that are on the order of zettabytes in size (Big Data). Conventional computers (uniprocessor systems) are unable to process Big Data in a timely manner. Inherent limitations on the computational power of sequential uniprocessor systems have lead to the development of parallel multiprocessor systems. The two major issues in the formulation and design of parallel multiprocessor systems are algorithm design and architecture design. The requirement of network symmetry ensures that each node in the network is identical to any other, thereby greatly reducing the architecture and algorithm design effort. For most symmetric network topologies, however, the requirements of low degree of connectivity for each node and low network diameter are often conflicting. Low network diameter often entails that each node in the network have a high degree of connectivity resulting in a drastic increase in the number of inter-processor connection links. A low degree of connectivity on the other hand, results in a high network diameter which in turn results in high inter-processor communication overhead and reduced efficiency of parallelism. Reconfigurable networks attempt to address this tradeoff. In a reconfigurable network each node has a fixed degree of connectivity irrespective of the network size. The network diameter is restricted by allowing the network to reconfigure itself into different configurations. In general, a reconfigurable system needs to satisfy the following criteria in order to be considered practically viable: (a) In each configuration the nodes in the network should have a fixed degree of active connectivity irrespective of network size, (b) The network diameter should be kept low via the reconfiguration mechanism and (c) The hardware for the reconfiguration mechanism (i.e. switch) should be of reasonable complexity. In this presentation, we discuss our design of a reconfigurable network topology that is targeted at medical applications; however, others have found a number of interesting properties about the network that makes it ideal for applications in computational biology as well as information engineering and information extraction (including knowledge engineering). The design presented in this talk is bio-inspired.

Wireless HD Video Transmission Technology: Challenges and Future Applications Wireless High Definition Video Transmission (WHDVT) over 802.11-based networks is an important enabling technology for home networks, viewing videos on the move, and N-screen environments. However, significant challenges exist in delivering smooth playback of HD content as WHDVT becomes more pervasive and multiple streams will need to be supported on the same network. These include lossy and delay prone nature of wireless media, unequal importance of video packets, and user mobility. This talk first introduces the basic concepts of WHDVT, which include characteristics of 802.11 networks, H.264 video compression, and video streaming protocols. Then, several solutions at the various layers will be presented, which include application, RTP/UDP and RTP/TCP, MAC, and physical layers. Finally, the talk will conclude with open research issues and future directions.

Large-Scale Small Cells via Hierarchical Cooperation: The Evolution Path beyond 4G Cellular Heterogeneous Cellular Networks (HCNs), consisting of macrocells overlaid with small cells (e.g., femtocells, picocells, microcells) provide a fast, flexible, cost-efficient, and fine-tuned design and expansion for existing cellular wireless networks to satisfy the ever increasing demand for network capacity. In HCNs, small cells serve as offloading spots in the radio access network to offload users and their associated traffic from congested macrocells. However, due to their large-scale deployment in random locations, limited transmit power, and the lack of complete coordination, the coexistence and efficient operation of small cells is very challenging. In this talk, we discuss the coexistence challenges posed to small cells and show that, with "hierarchical cooperation" (e.g., clustering and spectrum sensing), small cells can overcome the posed challenges and efficiently coexist in a multitier cellular wireless network. Then, we provide a general view of the evolution path beyond 4G cellular, considering the migration to higher frequency band (e.g., beyond 10 GHz) to accommodate very large number of antennas (i.e., massive MIMO), which will be a potential technology for small cells.

Participatory Urban Sensing: Challenges and Opportunities Mobile phones have evolved from basic communication device to powerful sensing platform with a rich set of built in sensors, such as microphone, GPS, accelerometer, and so on. They also provide convenient wireless interfaces (e.g., Bluetooth, WiFi) to connect to the external sensors. This led to what is called participatory urban sensing and monitoring applications that including healthcare, environmental noise, pollution, traffic conditions, and infrastructure protection. However, there exits significant challenges in terms of energy efficiency of mobile devices, sensing coverage, localization, quality of collected data, privacy and security, and middleware services. This talk will highlight the challenges and issues in participatory urban sensing and also describe the research opportunities in this emerging field. New solutions will be presented along with directions for future research.

Travel Information – About Cambodia & Siem Reap -

| About Cambodia | Cambodia, officially known as the Kingdom of Cambodia and once known as the Khmer Empire, is a country located in the southern portion of the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. It is a country of incredible beauty, with famous breathtaking temples, fertile plains dotted with rice fields. The dominant religion is Buddhism, which places value on hospitality and kindness. The capital and largest city is Phnom Penh, the political, economic, and cultural center of the country. Cambodia is notable for many places to experience the rhythm of rural life and timeless landscapes of dazzling rice paddies and swaying sugar palms. The South Coast is fringed by tropical islands, with just a handful of beach huts in sight. Inland from the coast lie the Cardamom Mountains, part of a vast tropical wilderness that provides a home to elusive wildlife and is the gateway to emerging ecotourism adventures. The mighty Mekong River cuts through the country and is home to some of the region’s last remaining freshwater dolphins. The northeast is a world unto itself, its wild and mountainous landscapes a home for Cambodia’s ethnic minorities and an abundance of natural attractions.

| About Siem Reap | Siem Reap is the most prosperous region of contemporary Cambodia. Its close proximity to the Angkor Wat temple complex has turned the city into one of the world’s premier travel destinations. The Angkor Temple Complex has been designated a UN Heritage Site and consists of hundreds of structures from the 9th to the 14th century. This vast collection of historical structures is decorated with intricately carved, priceless Khmer artwork. Structure range from partially renovated temples, pagodas and imperial residences to recently discovered ruins which are virtually untouched for the last 500 years. The heart of Siem Reap’s tourist district is known as Old Market, or Psah Chas. This part of town is home to a large concentration of restaurants and shops geared towards an ever-increasing number of American, British and European tourists. The influx of tourism has transformed a quiet little city into a bustling downtown area with an eclectic array of restaurants, bars, nightclubs and a night market that keep going well past midnight.

| Angkor and “Tomb Raider” | Angkor became more famous when the blockbuster Lara Croft: Tomb Raider were filmed there. One of the temples Ta Prohm, a beautiful temple bound by massive roots of huge trees, is known even to those who have never traveled to Cambodia before: this is where the most impressive scenes were created. Ta Prohm is now called the “Tomb Raider Temple” both in guide books and by the local tuk tuk drivers.

Travel Information – General Information -

| Banking Service | ATMs with international access are available across Siem Reap. The following cards are accepted at the ATMs: Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, Cirrus and Plus. All ATMs dispense in US dollars, sometimes we have the option of withdrawal in Cambodian currency. Banks are open from 8:00am to 3:30pm Monday to Friday and some banks are also open on Saturday mornings until 11:30am.

| Credit Card | Credit cards are accepted at most upscale hotels, shops and restaurants, some mid-range place and a growing number of other businesses. The most commonly accepted credit card is Visa, MasterCard, JCB, and AMEX. Most businesses charge a 2%-4% fee to accept credit cards.

| Currency | The currency unit is Cambodian Riel (KHR) which comes in notes of the following denominations: 50 KHR; 100 KHR; 200 KHR; 500 KHR; 1,000 KHR; 2,000 KHR; 5,000 KHR; 10,000 KHR; 20,000 KHR; 50,000 KHR; 100,000 KHR.

| Currency Exchange | Cambodian riel is the official tender in Cambodia but the US dollar is the de facto currency. Small transactions (less than a dollar) are usually done in riel. Foreign currency can be exchanged at the banks or one of the many currency exchange shops. Several exchange shops, such as Dina Exchange at Phsar Kandal, are located along Sivutha Blvd. Travelers Checks (T/C) are accepted in Cambodia and can be cashed at some money changers and most larger banks. AMEX in US dollars are the most widely accepted travelers checks. When accepting US dollars, inspect the bills carefully. Marred riel is acceptable tenderly, but the tiniest tear in a large US note renders it worthless in Cambodia. ANZ Royal Bank: Currency exchange, ATM, T/C exchange. No. 566-570, Samdech Tep Vong, Siem Reap. Canadia Bank: Full range of banking services, including: MoneyGram, T/C exchange, Foreign exchange, International credit cards & ATM service. Sivutha Blvd., Mondol 1, Svay Dangkum Commune, Siem Reap. SBC Bank: Currency exchange, ATM, T/C exchange, Western Union services. Lucky Mall Supermarket, Sivutha Blvd., Siem Reap.

| Electricity | Voltage is 220 Volt AC at 50 cycles per second. Flat 2-pin plugs and socket are widely used, but round 2-pin plugs are also used in some places. Please check up your plug and prepare the adaptor, if necessary.

| Mobile Phone | Mobile networks in Cambodia utilize the GSM 900 and 1800 systems. 3G (WCDMA), HSPDA and GPRS/EDGE networks are also available. International roaming onto these networks is possible if our operators allow it. If we have an "unlocked" GSM band mobile phone, we can buy a prepaid SIM card and use it with the phone here for cheaper rates instead of roaming service. Prepaid mobile SIM cards for visitors are available cheaply, but have valid time for only 1 or 2 weeks.

| Weather | January in Siem Reap is quite lovely. The weather is cool and dry with the day temperatures between 200C and 300C. It can get quite cool in the evening, but during the day it is still quite hot. The humidity is quite low around 50% during the day, but in the evening it often increases to about 80%. There is very little rain during this month. The sun is mostly present during the day. So we need to protect ourselves from the sun's rays using sun protection lotion, a hat and maybe even an umbrella. Always drink plenty of water when visiting the temples or if being out in the sun for long periods of time.

| Office Hours | Business Offices: Monday – Saturday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. Government Offices: Monday – Friday, 7:30am to 5:00pm.

| Time Zone | Cambodia is +7 hours GMT.

| Internet | Internet in Siem Reap is inexpensive and widely available at Internet shops and cafes all over town as well as at most hotels and guesthouses and many restaurants and bars. Free Wi-Fi is available in Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf and Spa Resort.

| To/From the Airport | The Siem Reap International Airport is a 6km, 15 minutes from town center. Taxis and tuk-tuks can be hired at the ticket desk located just outside the terminal doors. Taxis run $7 and tuk-tuks are $5 into town. Most hotels offer free transportation from the airport with advance reservations. Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra is located 8 kilometers from Siem Reap International Airport. It takes approximately 15 minutes to travel from the airport to the resort by car. The hotel offers airport transfer service from the airport. Transportations includes Ford van (8 passengers), Hyundai car (6 passengers), and Coaster or Bus (20 ~ 43 passengers). Airport transfer service should be booked in advance.

| Public Transport | There are plenty of ways to move around Cambodia and the best choice for long distances is by air. There are good and frequent connections between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap on President Air and Siem Reap Airways. Local buses can also provide an exciting means of travel and are good for those on a budget. The popular Mekong Express provides a luxury bus ride for just US$6 between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap every day. There are other companies offering the same route as well. You can also get between the capital and Siem Reap via boat in just 5 hours for about $US25. The best way to see the country at your leisure is to hire a car and a driver. You could drive yourself but it probably wouldn’t be as pleasant as having someone else drive you, especially through heavy traffic. Getting around in cities is best done by motorbike or by hiring a cycle or a taxi.

| Dress Code | Casual dress is the norm because of the hot and humid weather. However, more formal attire is preferred for meetings, official functions and major ceremonies or events. For any such occasions-in a suit or sports jacket and tie for men and formal dress for women. • Do not wear shorts or sandals to government offices, or swim suits, biker suits (lycra), bikinis, or see-through apparel in the city streets or villages. This dressing is considered offensive by local people. • Both men and women should be particularly sure to dress appropriately if visiting a religious site, for example, a pagoda (wat). Smart casual attire is recommended.
