    ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

NOTE: In this section, the terms "cold" and "hot" refer to the temperature of the coils. "Cold" means approximately -10C (14F) to 50C (122F). "Hot" means approximately 50C (122F) to 100C (212F).

INSPECT IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY 1.Check for DTCs. a.

  • NOTE: If any DTC is present, perform troubleshooting in accordance with the procedures for that DTC.

Remove the ignition coil assembly and spark plug. (See REMOVAL ). b.Check that sparks occur. c.

Disconnect the 6 fuel injector connectors. 1.

Fig. 6: Locating Fuel Injector Connectors Courtesy of TOYOTA MOTOR SALES, U.S.A., INC.

Install the spark plugs to each ignition coil, and connect the ignition coil connectors. 2.Ground the spark plugs. 3.Check if a spark occurs at each spark plug while the engine is being cranked. 4.

NOTE: Be sure to ground the spark plugs when checking. Replace the ignition coil if it receives an impact. Do not crank the engine for more than 2 seconds.

  • INSPECT SPARK PLUG 2.

NOTE: Never use a wire brush for cleaning. Never attempt to adjust the electrode gap on a used spark plug.

Check the electrode. a.Using a megohmmeter, measure the insulation resistance. 1.

Standard insulation resistance: 10 M or higher HINT:

If the result is 10 M or less, clean the plug and measure the resistance again. If a megohmmeter is not available, perform the following simple inspection instead.

Fig. 8: Measuring Insulation Resistance Courtesy of TOYOTA MOTOR SALES, U.S.A., INC.

Alternative inspection method: b.Quickly accelerate the engine to 4000 rpm 5 times. 1.Remove the spark plugs. 2.Visually check the spark plug. 3.

If the electrode is dry, the spark plug is functioning properly. If the electrode is damp, proceed to the next step.

Check the spark plug for any damage to its threads and insulator. If there is damage, replace the spark plug.

  • Recommended spark plug

    SPARK PLUG SPECIFICATION

    Manufacturer Spark Plug TypeDENSO FK20HR11

NOTE: Use only the listed spark plug or equivalent to ensure engine performance and smooth driveability.

Check the spark plug electrode gap. d.

Maximum electrode gap for used spark plug: 1.4 mm (0.055 in.)

If the gap is greater than the maximum, replace the spark plug.

Electrode gap for new spark plug: 1.0 to 1.1 mm (0.039 to 0.043 in.)

Fig. 9: Identifying Spark Plug Electrode Gap Courtesy of TOYOTA MOTOR SALES, U.S.A., INC.

    Clean the spark plugs. e.

If the electrode has traces of wet carbon, clean the electrode with a spark plug cleaner and then dry it.

    Standard air pressure: 588 kPa (6 kgf*cm2 , 85 psi)

Standard duration: 20 seconds or less

    HINT:

Only use the spark plug cleaner when the electrode is free of oil. If the electrode has traces of oil, use gasoline to clean off the oil before using the spark plug cleaner.
