Fourth Sunday of Lent
Today's Gospel Reading also spoke of the Light. (Jn. 9:1-41) As we heard, it was the story of the man who was
physically blind since birth. This reading reminds us that by nature, we are all born spiritually blind. Our blindness ends
when we were admitted into the Body of Christ through the Sacrament of Baptism. By remaining righteousness through
the Sacraments of Confession and the Holy Eucharist, we have maintained our sight. Should we choose to neglect our
blessed hope and shipwreck, surely, we will quickly find ourselves blinded by the darkness that surrounds us.
Jesus did not agree with such beliefs. Jesus said, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that
God's works might be revealed in him." (v.3) The reason why the man was born blind was to glorify God through the
manifestation of a miraculous cure. Without knowing it, the man was to become an instrument of God's power.
Having said the aforementioned words, Jesus spat on the ground, made mud with saliva and spread the mud on the
man's eyes. He then told the blind man to go and wash himself in the pool of Siloam, which means, "sent." The blind
man obeyed and returned with his sight having been restored. (Jn. 9:6-7)
Imagine going to a doctor to have your eyes tested and the doctor spits in his hands, mixes it with something, applies it
to your eyes and then tells you to go and wash yourself. I think 99% of us would not return to this doctor, finding him
pretty gross. Why then did the people not react when Jesus did this? It was because in those days, it was a common
practice. (Mk. 7:33, 8:23) The people believed that spittle had the properties of medicine.
In conclusion, "We must work the works of him who sent (us) while it is day; night is coming when no one can work."
(Jn. 9:4) As the blind man confessed Christ before others, through our Baptism we were called to plead the cause of the
Light. If we are rejected because of our spiritual calling, let us rejoice, for it is Christ Himself Who is being rejected
through our testimony. In the end, the words of Jesus shall be fulfilled, "For judgment I have come into the world." (Jn.
9:39)
Cuarto Domingo de Cuaresma La lectura del Evangelio de hoy también habló de la Luz. (Jn. 9:1-41) Como hemos escuchado, era la historia del
hombre que era físicamente ciego de nacimiento. Esta lectura nos recuerda que, por naturaleza, todos hemos nacido
espiritualmente ciegos. Nuestra ceguera terminó cuando fuimos admitidos en el Cuerpo de Cristo a través del
sacramento del Bautismo. Al permanecer en la virtud a través de los sacramentos de la Confesión y de la Eucaristía,
hemos mantenido nuestra vista. Si elegimos descuidar nuestra santa esperanza y naufragar, sin duda, nos encontraremos
rápidamente cegados por la oscuridad que nos rodea.
Jesús no estaba de acuerdo con tales creencias. Jesús dijo: "Ni este hombre ni sus padres pecaron, sino que nació ciego
para que las obras de Dios se manifiesten en él." (v. 3) La razón por la que el hombre había nacido ciego era para
glorificar a Dios a través de la manifestación de una cura milagrosa. Sin saberlo, el hombre se convertiría en un
instrumento del poder de Dios.
Habiendo dicho las palabras antes mencionadas, Jesús escupió en tierra, hizo barro con la saliva y untó el barro en los
ojos del hombre. Entonces le dijo al hombre ciego que fuera a lavarse en la piscina de Siloé, que significa "enviado". El
ciego obedeció y regresó con su vista restaurada. (Jn. 9: 6-7)
Imagínese que usted va a un médico para examinar sus ojos y el médico escupe en las manos, lo mezcla con algo, lo
aplica a los ojos y luego le dice que vaya y lávese. Creo que el 99% de nosotros no volvería a este médico, lo
consideraríamos bastante asqueroso. ¿Por qué entonces las personas no reaccionaron cuando Jesús hizo esto? es porque
en aquellos días, era una práctica común. (. Mc 7:33, 8:23) La gente creía que la saliva tenía propiedades medicinales.
En conclusión, "es necesario hacer las obras de aquel que nos envió mientras el día dura; la noche se acerca, cuando
nadie puede trabajar." (Jn. 9: 4) Así como el ciego confesó a Cristo delante de los demás, a través de nuestro bautismo
fuimos llamados a defender la causa de la Luz. Si somos rechazados debido a nuestro llamado espiritual, alegrémonos,
porque es Cristo mismo quien está siendo rechazado a través de nuestro testimonio. Al final, deberán cumplirse las
palabras de Jesús: "Para juicio he venido a este mundo." (Jn. 9:39)
