Throughout the fifteen weeks ten students worked on a

simple design to be realized (hypothetically) on a site

with rich characteristics.

The rich characteristics allowed each student to situ-

ate her/his design somewhere on the site in a way fitting

personal feelings and approach.

Some of the campus buildings that house restaurants

popular with foreign students face a wooded hill side

with rocky outcrops with the Dorim Stream running be-

low. The site holds a side valley of the Dorim stream

crossed with a bridge for car traffic.

15주간의 설계과정을 통해 10명의 수강생들은 풍부한 특징

을 가진 대상지에 가설적으로 실현될 간단한 디자인을 수행

한다.

대상지의 부분마다 자리할 수강생들의 디자인은 개인의 감

상과 접근방법에 의존하여 풍부한 특징을 드러낸다.

대상지 내 외국인 학생들이 자주 찾는 식당 건물은 뒷편으로

도림천과 그에 면한 수풀이 우거진 언덕이 자리한다.

대상지 가운데 관악교 아래에는 도림천과 수직한 방향으로

낮은 계곡 지형이 존재한다.

대상지와 설계과정

모든 수강생들은 개인별로 다문화공간을 발전시키는 가설적

인 과제를 수행한다.

국제적인 위상을 높이고 있는 서울대학교에서 외국인 학생

들을 위한 특수한 문화적, 종교적 배려 문제가 거론되어왔

다. 문화적 기대감을 만족시키려 하는 학생들은 음악을 연주

하거나 예술을 향유하고 축제를 벌일만한 공간이 없음을 불

평하고 있으며, 명상이나 기도에 관한 종교적 배경을 가진

학생들도 마찬가지이다. 금번 학기 스튜디오에서는 학생들

의 이러한 요구를 근거로 하여 다문화공간을 설계할 것이다.

전반적인 결과물은 일부 건축군을 포함한 오픈스페이스가

될 것임을 밝혀둔다. 설계에 참여하는 수강생 중 일부는 스

튜디오 강의를 처음 접하는 입문자이고 나머지는 학부경험

이나 직장경력을 갖춘 전문가들도 있다. 따라서 스튜디오는

요구되는 건축수준에 대한 유동적인 접근방식을 취하여 버

스정류장과 같은 간단한 건축물은 물론이고 상급수준의 수

강생의 경우 좀 더 복잡한 구조물을 설계할 수 있도록 조정

하였다.

다만 어떠한 경우에라도 전체 경관은 다문화적인 감상의 가

능성을 제공하도록 소란스럽거나 조용하게, 종교적, 예술적

경험을 위해 기쁨, 유희, 고립 등의 분위기를 조성하여야 하

며, 상징적 건축물은 그 일부로서 기능한다. 모든 외국인 학

생들이 경관요소와 건축요소를 하나로서 이해하고 이용할

수 있도록 경관요소와 건축요소는 강력한 관계성을 지녀야

한다. 건축물을 둘러싼 경관은 건축물의 모양이나 위치에 관

해 강한 관련성을 가져야 한다. 즉 건축물은 주변 경관을 설

계할 아이디어를 제공할 수 있어야 한다.

All students worked individually on a hypothetical as-

signment: developing Multi-Culti Space.

In becoming a global university, SNU wants to care for

the specific cultural and religious requirements of for-

eign students. On one hand there are the students with

cultural expectations who can not find a proper place to

perform their music, art, or enjoy festivals; on the other

there are students with religious backgrounds that re-

quire meditation- or prayer spaces of particular design.

In this Studio we will design a Multi-Culti Space to care

for these wishes and requirements: it is in fact an open

landscape with some architecture. The design student

group was composed of absolute beginners designing

for the first time, as well as professionals with a long ex-

perience. Therefore, the Studio took a flexible approach

to the required architecture. In its most simple form it was

a light structure the size of a bus shelter, more advanced

students experimented with more complex structures.

In any case the landscape had to provide possibilities for

multi-cultural appreciation - noisy or quiet – pleasure,

enjoyment, and seclusion for religious and artistic ex-

periences; the built architecture was to be part of it. All

international students should be able to use landscape

and architecture that should be perceived as a whole:

therefore the built and the green have a strong relation

to each other. The surrounding landscape had to play a

strong say to the shape and position of the building. In

return the building should give ideas to design the land-

scape around it.

Assignment 과제

The studio Site Design intended to teach fundamentals of

the design process in a systematic way. Students could

learn about the intellectual and creative processes be-

hind landscape design following a simple set of steps.

1 Site analysis (4 weeks)

2 Assignment and Concept (3 weeks)

3 Design (4 weeks)

4 Working up final presentations (4 weeks)

In the process experience was added or gained with

fundamental ideas of landscape-architectural space,

ideas that were developed using simple means: paper

and pen or pencil, clay, foam board, modeling materials,

and digital camera and word processing soft only. In the

last four weeks just any means to work up final presen-

tations was allowed.

Presenting many times one’s own work in English to the

class and to invited foreign fellow students and guests

critics was a good training in communicating about de-

sign. Communicating with foreigners of various cultural

backgrounds was an enriching experience, and could

with some struggle often be expressed successfully in

design.

단지설계 스튜디오는 체계적인 방법으로 설계과정의 기본을

가르치는 데 그 목적이 있다. 수강생들은 경관설계에 숨겨진

지능적이고 창조적인 과정을 다음의 간단한 단계를 통해 배

울 수 있다.

위의 단계를 거치면서 경관 및 건축적 공간에 대한 기본적인

아이디어들이 생겨나는데, 종이 위에 펜이나 연필, 점토, 폼

보드, 모델링 재료나 디지털 카메라, 워드프로세싱과 같이

단순한 도구로 발전시킨다. 마지막 발표를 위한 4주간의 준

비기간 동안에는 다양한 도구를 쓰는 것이 허용된다.

수차례 자신의 진행상황 및 결과물을 스튜디오에 초대된 외

국인 학생들이나 객원크리틱들 앞에서 영어로 발표하는 일

은 설계물을 커뮤니케이팅하는 훌륭한 훈련이 된다.

다양한 문화적 배경을 가진 외국인들과 교류함으로써 경험

을 쌓고, 설계를 성공적으로 표현하는 방법을 터득할 수 있

다.
