Taking an Interest in Social Issues

In the Word Search, you should have found 12 different social issues. Choose one social issue that you think may be interesting, and then an-swer the following questions:

1 Which social issue do you

think may be interesting?2 Why do you think this

social issue may be

interesting?3 Can this social issue be

found in Hong Kong?4 Does this social issue affect

Children;

Adults; or

Children and adults?5 Does this social issue affect

males, females or both

males and females?

Share this information with the rest of

the class.

Identifying a Social Issue

How do you know whether or not something is a social issue? You may think something is not fair, but it may not be a social issue. Consider the following three positions:

Position One

Your school’s principal has decided to make the eating of chocolate

within the school an offence. Any student found eating chocolate

on the school premises will have to complete 6 hours of detention. Is this a social issue? Explain your reasons.

__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

Position Two

Your parents agree with the school principal in position one and

confirm that you are no longer allowed to eat chocolate at home. If

your parents find you eating chocolate, you will be grounded and

will not receive any pocket money for 6 weeks.

viii

Page 10: Social Issues Sample

Position Three

The Hong Kong government has decided to make a law that makes

eating chocolate illegal unless a doctor has provided a special note.

If anyone is found eating chocolate who does not have a doctor’s

note, they will have to go to prison for three weeks and / or pay a

fine of HK$15,000.Is this a social issue? Explain your reasons.

To make sure we can recognise a social issue, it is important for us to be able to understand the definition of different social issues.

What is a

definition?

A definition is an exact statement, description or

meaning of something.

EXAMPLE (1): SCHOOL

A school is a place where children are educated.

EXAMPLE (2): STEAL

To steal is to take someone else’s property without

permission or legal right and without intending to

return it.

Every social issue has a definition, but some social issues may be very difficult to define. Here are some examples of simple definitions of a social issue.

SOCIAL

ISSUE

DEFINITION

HUNGER A person who has become weak because he or she

has not been able to eat enough food.BULLYING To use strength or power to harm or intimidate a

person or other people who are weaker than

yourself.HOMELESS A person without a home, and having to live on

the streets

So how do we write a definition of a social issue? We have to ask our-selves some questions that all begin with the letter ‘W’.

1 What is the name of the social issue?2 Who does the social issue affect?

Which group of people are affected?3 Why does the social issue affect them?

Why does the social issue have an affect on this group of people?

4 When does the social issue affect them?

Does the social issue affect them all the time or some of the time?

5 Where are they affected?

In what part of the world do the people who are affected by the social issue live?

x

iBooks Author

Page 12: Social Issues Sample

Let’s look at some sample answers to our ‘W’ questions and see if we can start writing a definition.

CRIME

1 What is the name of the social issue?

CRIME

2 Who does crime

affect?

People who have experienced the

affects of a crime and also those who

have had to change their lives as a

result of crime in their

neighbourhood.3 Why does crime

affect them?

Because there is a high crime rate in

their neighbourhood. They may be

scared to go out at night. The price of

their home will be lower.4 When does crime

affect them?

All the time

5 Where are the

victims of crime?

Anywhere in a district where there is

a high crime rate.

By using the information from the questions and answers, we can now write a definition of the social issue of crime.

The social issue of crime can be defined as being where a group of

people are affected by a high crime rate within their

neighbourhood and their lives have been affected.

Mind Maps

It can be helpful to draw a mind map when you are writing a definition of the social issue. Here is an example of what your mind map could look like.

xi

Now using a mind map and by answering the ‘W’ questions, see if you can write a definition for the social issue of hunger.

HUNGER

2 Who does hunger affect?3 Why does hunger affect them?4 When does hunger affect them?5 Where are they affected by

hunger?

Reading About Hunger

Revised from the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Na-tions

What is hunger?

We all know what hunger is. We know that feeling in our stomachs. And when we feel hungry, we don’t usually have a problem putting an end to it because we can get some food. But for more than 850 million people, hunger never ends.

Starvation

Try to imagine what it would be like if you were hungry and no food was available. None. Your body starts to feed on its own fat and body tissues. If you don’t eat for a long time, you may lose about 50 percent of your body weight. Your skin becomes thin, stiff, and cold. Your hair becomes dry and sparse and falls out easily. After about 8 to 12 weeks without food, you starve to death. Starvation caused by famine is the most serious form of hunger.

Many people have seen pictures of famine: children with swollen bellies and skinny arms and legs. These terrible pictures and news stories are often in the newspapers and TV news stories.

Most of the world’s hungry are not on the point of starvation. Their suffering doesn’t make the news.

People who are hungry don’t eat enough to get the energy they need to lead active lives. This makes it hard to study, work or even play. Hungry children do not grow as quickly as healthy children. Mentally, they may develop more slowly. Constant hunger weakens the immune system and makes them more vulnerable to diseases and infections.Mothers living with constant hunger often give birth to underweight and weak ba-bies. The World Health Organization estimates that well over 3 million deaths every year can be attributed to children being born underweight. Every day, millions of people around the world eat only the bare minimum of food to keep themselves alive. Every night, they go to bed not certain whether there will be enough food to eat tomorrow.

Answer the following questions:

1 Explain what happens to

your body when you do not

have enough food to eat and

you become hungry.2 Why does it become more

difficult for children to play

when they are hungry?3 How many children die as

the result of being born

underweight?

Here are some sample topics for discussion:

xv

iBooks Author

Page 17: Social Issues Sample

1 Discuss what you think it would be like to be able to eat only

one meal per day.2 Discuss why you think people who are hungry become more

vulnerable.3 Explain the differences between hunger and starvation.4 Explain how would share one cup of rice, two litres of water

and one cup of maize with a family of six people.5 Discuss how your class could raise HK$1,000 to send to a

charity that looks after people who suffer hunger.6 Design a poster that draws awareness to people who do not

have enough food to eat.
