An Introduction: Learning English Through Social Issues
In this course we are going to learn and develop our English language skills through social issues. Before we begin, it’s a good idea to make sure we understand what a social issue is.
SOCIAL Something related to society or community.ISSUES Important subjects or problems for debate or
discussion.
Definition of Social Issues
Social issues are something that directly or indirectly affect a
person or many members of society or community and are
considered to be a problem. Sometimes social issues have
something to do with moral or religious values.
VOCABULARY
When you are reviewing different social issues there may be new vo-cabulary that you do not understand. For example, look at the words in the left hand column of the box below, and then listen to how the words are pronounced.

Taking an Interest in Social Issues
In the Word Search, you should have found 12 different social issues. Choose one social issue that you think may be interesting, and then an-swer the following questions:

Identifying a Social Issue
How do you know whether or not something is a social issue? You may think something is not fair, but it may not be a social issue. Consider the following three positions:
Position One
Your school’s principal has decided to make the eating of chocolate
within the school an offence. Any student found eating chocolate
on the school premises will have to complete 6 hours of detention.Is this a social issue? Explain your reasons.

Position Two
Your parents agree with the school principal in position one and
confirm that you are no longer allowed to eat chocolate at home. If
your parents find you eating chocolate, you will be grounded and
will not receive any pocket money for 6 weeks.

Position Three
The Hong Kong government has decided to make a law that makes
eating chocolate illegal unless a doctor has provided a special note.
If anyone is found eating chocolate who does not have a doctor’s
note, they will have to go to prison for three weeks and / or pay a
fine of HK$15,000.Is this a social issue? Explain your reasons.

To make sure we can recognise a social issue, it is important for us to be able to understand the definition of different social issues.
What is a
definition?
A definition is an exact statement, description or
meaning of something.
EXAMPLE (1): SCHOOL
A school is a place where children are educated.
EXAMPLE (2): STEAL
To steal is to take someone else’s property without
permission or legal right and without intending to
return it.
Every social issue has a definition, but some social issues may be very difficult to define. Here are some examples of simple definitions of a social issue.

So how do we write a definition of a social issue? We have to ask our-selves some questions that all begin with the letter ‘W’.

Which group of people are affected?3 Why does the social issue affect them?
Why does the social issue have an affect on this group of people?
4 When does the social issue affect them?
Does the social issue affect them all the time or some of the time?
5 Where are they affected?
In what part of the world do the people who are affected by the social issue live?

Let’s look at some sample answers to our ‘W’ questions and see if we can start writing a definition.

By using the information from the questions and answers, we can now write a definition of the social issue of crime.
The social issue of crime can be defined as being where a group of
people are affected by a high crime rate within their
neighbourhood and their lives have been affected.

What is hunger?
We all know what hunger is. We know that feeling in our stomachs. And when we feel hungry, we don’t usually have a problem putting an end to it because we can get some food.But for more than 850 million people, hunger never ends.
Starvation
Try to imagine what it would be like if you were hungry and no food was available. None. Your body starts to feed on its own fat and body tissues. If you don’t eat for a long time, you may lose about 50 percent of your body weight. Your skin becomes thin, stiff, and cold. Your hair becomes dry and sparse and falls out easily. After about 8 to 12 weeks without food, you starve to death. Starvation caused by famine is the most serious form of hunger.
Many people have seen pictures of famine: children with swollen bellies and skinny arms and legs. These terrible pictures and news stories are often in the newspapers and TV news stories.
Most of the world’s hungry are not on the point of starvation. Their suffering doesn’t make the news.
People who are hungry don’t eat enough to get the energy they need to lead active lives. This makes it hard to study, work or even play. Hungry children do not grow as quickly as healthy children. Mentally, they may develop more slowly. Constant hunger weakens the immune system and makes them more vulnerable to diseases and infections.Mothers living with constant hunger often give birth to underweight and weak ba-bies. The World Health Organization estimates that well over 3 million deaths every year can be attributed to children being born underweight. Every day, millions of people around the world eat only the bare minimum of food to keep themselves alive. Every night, they go to bed not certain whether there will be enough food to eat tomorrow.
