Chub fishing is possibly my favourite style of fishing. They are a species that will feed all year round. no matter what the weather, if the river season is open, there’s a chance of catching a chub. i’m lucky enough to live close to a couple of nice stretches of river, with a good head of chub, and the odd barbel. popping out for an hour or two after work can be the most rewarding way of fishing, and chub are the perfect species for it!

my first tactic to target chub and barbel on rivers is to use a feeder. Chub can be greedy fish and love to eat. a feeder full of Sonubaits Cheesy garlic groundbait is sure to pull a few fish upstream. This groundbait has a strong smell that chub and barbel adore. i’ll start by introducing four feederfuls of Cheesy garlic groundbait into a couple of swims before i commence fishing to give the fish chance to switch onto the feed.

i’ll start by mixing the groundbait using 2 pints of water for 2kg of groundbait. if the river is pushing through quickly i’ll add a little more water to make the groundbait stickier. This makes sure that the bait in the feeder reaches the bottom.

after baiting the swim i’ll clip on my hooklength and attach a Cheesy garlic Oozing barbel & Carp pellet to the hair. This super smelly hookbait leaks masses of colour and flavour through the river, making any chub close by want to eat it!

When the fish really want some feed to keep them competing in the swim, a feeder stuffed full with Cheesy garlic halibut pellets is the way to go. Softening a mixture of 4, 6 and 8mm pellets in river water and packing them into a feeder will keep the fish grubbing around, until they pick up your hookbait! Similar to when using a groundbait feeder, i’ll throw a couple of handfuls of mixed sized pellets into a few swims, before i start fishing. This way i can leapfrog down the river and should have less time to wait for the fish to switch onto the feed.

a big lump of paste provides a very visual hookbait when there is a lot of competition for food. Sometimes, the lump of paste can have the opposite effect, and three

8mm pellets glued to the hair will be the most successful hookbait by matching to your feed.

mother nature can play a big part in what bait i use. When the rivers are swollen with lots of fast moving water, smell is the fish’s most important sense. The chocolate brown water cuts down the fishes vision, making them rely on their smell to find food. i can use this as an advantage, by adding Cheesy garlic Flavour Shaker to my dry groundbait i can boost the flavour levels and let the fish know where the feed is! after moulding a lump of Cheesy garlic barbel & Carp paste around a korum paste Cage, i’ll dip it in some Cheesy garlic Liquid. This oil based liquid gives the bait a coating allowing me to then roll the hookbait in the Flavour Shaker. This is the ultimate floodwater hookbait!

So now i’ve revealed my chub and barbel secrets – get out there and catch a few!

There’s something about the meaty smell of Spicy Sausage that barbel just cannot resist. The deep red baits simply ooze barbel and the fish definitely agree. For those that don’t know, i love barbel. i fish for them on many different rivers, at home and abroad.

my first choice of bait when targeting these hard fighting fish is pellets. i like to use what i call the ‘monkey mix,’ The monkey mix is basically a mix of different sized Spicy Sausage halibut pellets with a small

amount of Spicy meaty method mix added. by pouring the required amount of pellets

into a bowl, adding a bit of water from the river to the pellets and a

generous squirt of hemp & Spicy Sausage Oil, i can create a softened pellet mix, that when compressed hard into a feeder will leak off huge amounts of flavour.

along with the huge amount of flavour created by the pellet mixture and the slick created by the oil-based liquid there are also fine groundbait particles and the odd pellet passing down the river, but very little feed to fill the fish up.

When the river is low and clear and the fish are being finicky just packing the feeder

with groundbait can be the preferred tactic. it’s easily mixed, by adding 2 pints of water to a 2kg bag. That’s it! Simply pack it into a korum Combi Feeder, cast it out – and hold on to your rod!

in flood conditions you’ll need to use lots of bait. i still like to use the monkey mix, but just before casting i give my feeder and hookbait a dunk in some Spicy Sausage Liquid to further enhance the attraction in the water.

When the water is low, an 8mm pellet O is a great hookbait. The barbel can see more, and will be more wary of a great big pellet waving in front of them. These small pellets are easily sniffed out by the barbel.

For floodwater conditions, two 8mm pellets or a 12mm pellet O will be used. The colour in the water will make the fish rely much more on their sense of smell and taste so the bigger pellets are used.

When the river is really chocolate coloured, often a big piece of meat will be the best bait to get bites. i like to further boost my meat by coating it in Spicy Sausage Flavour Shaker. along with increasing the pulling power of the meat, it also gives a slightly tougher coating, to withstand the powerful flood conditions.
