Disney’s Most Magical Treasuresby Hector Cantu

NothingHollywoodhas createdmatchesthecollectibleallure of Walt Disney’s magical universe and its colorful residents. From 1928’s Plane CrazyfeaturingMickeyMouseto Princess Anna of 2013’s Frozen,WaltDisneyandhissuccessors have created not only a multinational media corporation but perhaps the largest universe of entertainment memorabilia. For decades, theme parks and retailers have sold millions of Disney pins, dolls, toys, watches, mugs, plates and figurines. But truly unique Disney pieces – such as original art, movie posters and animation cels – stand atop the Disneyana summit, commandingtoppricesfromcollectorsworldwide. “There aren’t many Disneyana items that reach those super high prices these days,” notes David Tosh, comics and animation art specialist at Heritage Auctions. “It has to be something extremely well-known and historic. Having said that,therestillremainsahealthymarketforhigh-gradeDisneycomic books from the early 1940s. And the better Carl Barks’ paintings still have plenty of appeal, especially those featuring his most famous creation, Uncle Scrooge. It comes down to two things when dealing in vintage Disney material – quality and condition.” Another factor in Disneyana’s popularity – its never-ending supply of fans – won’t fade anytime soon. “Certainly, no one is in a better position of creating collectors than Disney,” says Tom Tumbusch, editor of Tomart’s Disneyana Updatemagazine. “They are still producing popular movies, and they run 60 million people through their theme parks every year. The happiness and magic associated with Disney characters will touch hearts for a long time to come.” The following lots represent some of the top prices realized atHeritageAuctionsforDisneyitemssoldatauctionwithinthepasteightyears.

There's an old saying about St. Petersburg, Fla.; People who live there love it; businesses that located there stay; and visitors who go there to shop and play want to come back again and again. How true! St. Petersburg and Pinellas Coun-ty offer an unequaled environment for work and play. Wonderful weather and miles of sandy beaches make it a magnet for people worldwide.

St. Petersburg's two strongest selling points are sunshine and shopping. The former can be enjoyed virtually year-round; the latter comes in the form of malls, factory outlet stores, discount chains, specialty shops, membership warehouses, and —oh, yes— a cavalcade of wonderful antiques and collectibles stores. The advertisers on this page offer a taste of what we mean.

Getting to St. Petersburg isn't hard to do. The city's major thoroughfare is I-275, which runs north and south and connects to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and Man-atee County (another mecca for shoppers on the antique trail). I-275 also connects with 1-4 going east to Orlando from Tampa and I-75 heading north. U.S. 19 is an important north-south link that runs the length of the county.

A visit to St. Petersburg will leave you wanting more, no matter how long you stay. And it's easy to fan out and explore. Tampa — a city with it's own identity, cultural pulse and antiques and collectibles shops—is right next door. And Orlando, with its many theme parks, is a short drive away. Don't you think it's time to visit, vacation and shop in St. Petersburg? It's truly the Jewel of Florida's Gulf Coast!

“It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to

them. They went out and happened to things.” In the Year 1550, Giorgio Vasaripublishedabookcalled,Lives of the Most Eminent Painters, Sculptors and Architects. In it, he describesthegreatmasterthusly:

“The greatest gifts are often seen, inthecourseofnature, rained by celestial influences on human creatures; and sometimes, insupernaturalfashion, beauty, grace, andtalentareunitedbeyondmeasurein one single person, in a manner that to whatever such an one turns his attention, his every action is so divine, that, surpassing allothermen, itmakesitselfclearlyknownasathingbestowedby God (as it is), and not acquired by human art. This was seenbyallmankindinLeonardodaVinci, inwhom, besidesabeauty of body never sufficiently extolled, there was an infinite grace in all his actions; and so great was his genius…that to whatever difficulties he turned his mind, he solved them with ease. In him was great bodily strength, joined to dexterity, with a spirit and courage ever royal and magnanimous; and the fame ofhisnamesoincreased, thatnotonlyinhislifetimewasheheld in esteem, but his reputation became even greater among posterity after his death.”

It is said that Vasari was somewhat biased toward the painters,

Leonardo da Vinci by his last apprentice, Franceso

Melzi (1493-1570).

Sarasota County -- which includes Venice, Northport, Longboat and Siesta Keys -- is alive with culture, sports, affordable homes, a brisk job market and great schools.

The Mona LisaandThe Last Supperarehismostfamousworks. LeonardodaVinciwasalsoagreatprocrastinator, andheoften did not finish his artwork, or it took him years to do so. The Mona Lisa was painted over four years and was still not completed on time. It never made it into the hands of Francesco delGiocondowhocommissionedthepaintingofhiswife2.Lisadel Giocondo may have seen her portrait in the early stages, but she probably never saw it completed. However, millions of people view it each year, and it is the most popular work of art in the Louvre. Leonardo was never paid for it, the most famous painting—and probably the most valuable—in the world today. The nearly 30-foot-long The Last Supper in the Convent of SantaMariadellaGrazieinMilanspannedaboutthreeyearsofinterrupted work before completion. In his book, Vasari related astoryaboutLeonardobeingperplexedbywhosefacetouseforJudas. After the convent’s Prior repeatedly hounded the great painter to hurry up and finish the masterpiece, Leonard is said to have told the Duke of Milan (his benefactor for the work) that he would use the Prior’s head for Judas’ if he did not find a suitable model. The Duke found this hilarious, and the Priorbackedoffonhisdemands.

Since 1976, Jere’s Antiques has catered to, and sold to, a wholesale trade of antiques dealers, designers and auction houses. We maintain our own warehouse in England and buy throughout all of

Britain and on the continent, in Belgium, Holland and France. We continue to import a 40-foot container of furniture every 10-12 days. We

inventory an incredible range of furniture, in all ages, styles and woods, in our33,000 square foot warehouse in Savannah.

All of our merchandise is truly priced for the wholesale trade. Whether you seek a period linen press or an Art Deco Vanity, we have it all. Looking for a

home or commercial bar? We have it all. Whether you deal in oak, mahogany, walnut or pine,

we have it all. There are very few importers left and even fewer still who can sell at a

true wholesale price. And not many maintain a large inventory of good, clean, saleable merchandise. There are very few that have a large turn-over of merchandise. There are very few that unload on a regular basis.

There is no one like Jere’s Antiques.

DBA: Favrile is a type of iridescent glass first patented in 1894. Tiffany’s Favrile glass is different from other types in that the color is embedded in the glass itself. Tiffany is frequently given the credit for producing the first Jack in the Pulpit vases, but that is not true. The British were the first to make the style, but they did not call it “Jack in the Pulpit.” The poisonous plant also grows in Britain, but it is called, “Lords and Ladies.” The British gave the vase model

numbers, not names. The first Jack in the Pulpit-type vase wasproducedinGreatBritainin1854. This is more a retail price butfairtobothsellerandbuyer.

DBA: This is a high price for an antique telephone. The key to the high value is the original condition, and that this one is so old. It is getting harder to find one in original condition. (They did not say working condition.) I have seen these selling in the $400 range; however, condition was not the same as this one. There are many collectors of telephones, so while I believe this has sold at the higher end of the market, I feel that there willcontinuetobetelephonecollectorsandastrongmarketfor telephone collecting. COLLECTORI’ve been asked to research this sword to find out if it’s authentic.Canyouhelp?

JS: This particular sword is a foot officer’s pattern sword, most typicallyassociatedwithConfederatemanufacturersinMemphis,Tennessee, and Mobile, Alabama. The reproductions of this particular pattern are extremely convincing. Yoursword, inmyopinion, isnodoubtoriginalandmostlikely made by Louis Bissonnet of Mobile, Alabama. This is a

fairly common Confederate officer’s pattern sword made or agent-marked by several makers in the Deep South. The scrolls you see on the blade are part of a floral-etched pattern that originally covered the blade for 15 to 18 inches on either side, possibly with maker’s mark and sometimes even the soldier’s name. Unfortunately,inthisconditionthemirror-likeetchwillnotbediscernibletoanygreatdetail,butatleastitshowsussomedetailthathelpsattributeittothisparticularMobile,Alabama,maker. The hilt on your sword is extremely nice and would be hard to upgrade. It appears all original and typical of other Mobile-madeswordswithabulbous-shapedgrip. There is a pristine example of this sword being sold by Bonham’s auction, San Francisco on June 9 from the collection of Joseph Murphy. There could not be a better example with bright, frosted etching and accompanying scabbard. It will probably have a presale estimate minimum of $8,000-$10,000 and bring at least in that range. Your example in auction would probably have a presale estimate of $3,000-$5,000 and sell in that range. It is possible it would bring the high side of this estimate or even more as the hilt has such a fine “as found” attic patina.

A foot officer pattern sword, possibly by Louis Bissonneat of Mobile, Alabama, valued at $3,000-$5,000.

The faint etching that verified its authenticity.

I am in possession of what I understand to be the original 1889 Wilder’s Brigade sign-in roster for the 1889 GAR National Convention. The Historical Society in Indianapolis, Indiana, has askedmetobringtherostertothemtoexamine it. Could you give me any idea of what a book/roster like this might be worth? Thank you for your time and consideration.

JS: Wilder’s Brigade was a famous Union fighting unit during the Civil War. The unit is best known for the first use of Spencer rifles in combat (the Battle of Hoover’s Gap), and items associated with this unit are highly collectible. The reunionribbonsandprogramshownwill sell for about $200.
