In 2009, Fanny Bouyagui leaves for Agadez in Niger, the starting point of all African migrations. Who are those thousands of migrants? They come from Ghana, Togo, Niger, Burkina Faso, Senegal....
Their journey continues on a truck, heading through the desert to Libya and then in a boat to the European coasts.
Having come back from Agadez, the artist creates a monumental installation, a moving testimony and a comparison between two eras: that of her Senegalese father who came to France in 1957 and that of the XXIst century, with its closed borders.
One year later, Fanny Bouyagui goes to seek them in Castel Volturno, in Southern Italy in search of the migrants which she had met one year before.
Castel Volturno, a l itt le balnear town located 30km away from Naples, is just a stop in the migrants’ odyssey, just before theLampedusa camps.
It is the training center of the SSC club of Napol i and the headquarters of the Camorra. A lawless zone/ 23,000 inhabitants, 18 000 undocumented Africans waiting to leave again:An apartheid-l ike vision in the Ital ian Far West.
Every morning in this slum -prostitution, pollution, garbages, rubbish, ramshack led or unf in ished bu i ld ings, abandoned vil las- thousands of Africans take the bus in search of a job: from cleaning to sex via tomato fields and mozarella. Be very welcome in Europe…
