Ühel suvehommikul 2007 kirjeldas lehemees Otepääl suusataja Andrus Veerpalu tegemisi: „Kahekordne olümpiavõitja liigub koduõuel aeglaselt, kahe kargu toel. Kuid naeratus tema näolt ei kustu. Ta on kaljukindel, et pöördub suurele rajale tagasi.“

Hooaeg, tippspordi mõistes väga pikk, oli vahele jäänud. Seljataha jäi mitu lõikust. Jalg ei tahtnud isegi siis sõna kuulata, kui tuli pisitütre eest hoolt kanda.

Kes uskusid suvel 2007, et 36-aastane veteran Veerpalu, saavutanud kõik, mida võimalik saavutada, varsti jälle medaleid võidab? Imet võib ju loota, kuid imesse uskuda on raskem.

Treener Mati Alaver lootis parimat. Kirurg Toomas Tein lootis parimat. Abikaasa Angela Veerpalu lootis ehk ka, ent tema lootus tähendas pigem kalli kaasa jalavalu kadumist. Täiega uskus endasse Andrus Veerpalu: „Masendust ma peale ei lase. Unistan korras jalast ja nor-maalsetest treeningutest, aga unistan rahulikult.“

Veerpalu tuli tagasi kõrgeimal tasemel – teenis talvel 2009 Liberecist oma teise MM-tiitli. Olümpiaaladel Eesti sel aastal enamat ei saavutanudki.

* * *Gerd Kanter valitses kettaheitemaailma juba paar aastat. Kodus oli ta mööda astunud Alek-sander Tammertist ja rahvusvahelisel areenil leedulasest Virgilijus Aleknast. Maailmameistri ja olümpiavõitja arvel oli 28 järjestikust võitu, kui Berliini MM-il tuli leppida pronksiga.

MM-pronks on eestlasele kah kõva saavutus, aga miks lohutada Kanterit, tugevaimat! Saab tappa, ajab pea jälle püsti ja jaksab kodupubliku rõõmuks veel hulk aastaid võidelda! Kanter tegi uue sammu kohe ära, pannes koos Tammertiga kodustel Ergo maailmamängu-del muud kettaheiteriigid korralikult paika.

Kanter valitseb edasi.

* * *Mööda Euroopat on vuranud buss, küljel teatis Killing Team. Isegi politsei on uurinud, miks nii sõjakat sõnapaari – killing tähendab inglise keeles „tapmist“ – vaja läheb ja kas selle sõi-duki liikumist ei tasuks piirata. Eesti sõudetreener Matti Killing on esitanud isikut tõendava dokumendi, millest nähtub: mis teha, kui mu nimi on tõesti Killing.

Suvel-sügisel 2009 leidis sõuderingkond, et Killing Teami saab tõlgendada teiselgi moel. Killingu õpilased Allar Raja ja Kaspar Taimsoo tõusid paariskahesel sõudepaadil maailma paremikku, tõid MM-ilt pronksi ja Euroopa meistrivõistlustelt kulla. Vastased varisesid nende ees.

Aastaid maailmakuulsust kogunud Eesti sõudmine liikus Raja ja Taimsoo väel edasi. Vana meister Jüri Jaanson – jah, „vana meister“, mitte „vanameister“ – jäi tagaplaanile. Mullu koos Tõnu Endreksoniga olümpiahõbeda võitnud Jaanson ei suutnud Endreksoni isapuhkuse aegu maailmaareenil üksi läbi lüüa, aga Eesti meistrivõistlustel tegi auhinnalaua ikka armu-tult puhtaks. Näis, kuidas 44aastane korüfee jätkab!

* * *Raskekaalujudoka Martin Padar tuli Euroopa meistriks, kuid MM-i viies koht ei tähendanud väärilist jätku. Mitmevõistleja Mikk Pahapill ja kaugushüppaja Ksenija Balta tulid talvel Euroo pa sisemeistriks. Muidugi, pärast seda nende medalita õue-MM ju kurvastas.

Kokku tuli üsna tavaline spordiaasta. Polnud kestvat pidu nagu 2006, aga säilis kindlus, et pöidlapidamise põhjust jätkub tükiks ajaks.

Noor ema, suusataja Kristina !migun-Vähi, muide, harjutab edasi. Kui ta hangib Vancou-verist senistele olümpiamedalitele lisaks veel mõne, lööme käsi kokku. Kui ta unistus jääb püüdluseks, anname talle ikka au!

On one fi ne summer morning in Otepää back in 2007, a journalist described skier Andrus Veerpalu with the fol-lowing words: “Our double Olympic gold medal winner is meandering slowly in his back yard with the help of two crouches. But his smile remains intact. He is convinced he will return to the great tracks.”

He had missed a season – a very long period in terms of professional sports. Having been through several op-erations, his leg would still play up even when caring for his baby girl.

Who would have believed back then that the 36-year old veteran Veerpalu, having achieved all there is to be achieved would be winning medals again? You may hope for miracles, but to believe in them is harder.

Coach Mati Alaver hoped for the best. Surgeon Dr Toomas Tein hoped for the best. Wife Angela Veerpalu hoped for the best too, although her “best” may have rather meant no more aches and pain for her beloved hus-band. But the one to fully believe in Andrus Veerpalu was the man himself: “I will not let depressive thoughts creep in. I dream of a fi t leg and my normal training routine, but I dream patiently.”

Veerpalu returned at the highest level – in the winter of 2009 he won his second World Championship title in Liberec. This remained Estonia’s only golden achievement at Olympic events in 2009.

Gerd Kanter had been ruling the discuss World for a good few years before 2009. At home he had overtaken Aleksander Tammert and on the international arena surpassed legendary Lithuanian Virgilijus Alekna. The World champion and Olympic winner had 28 consecutive victories to his name, yet at Berlin World Championships he had to accept a bronze medal.

Sure, bronze is also a great achievement for Estonia, but why comfort Kanter – our number one! He will take the blow, pick himself up and continue to fi ght for the joy of his home crowd for many years to come! To prove this point, as the next step Tammert and Kanter went on to put all other discuss nations to their place at ERGO World games at home in Estonia.

For a while now European roads have been carrying a bus that reads “Killing Team” on it. Amongst other wonderers, also the police have had to ask about the aggressive title, questioning if the “Killing Team” should in fact be allowed to roam around this freely. Estonian rowing coach Matti Killing has had to display his personal ID to get out of the sticky situations: after all the man cannot help being called Killing!

During summer and autumn 2009 the “Killing Team” name has however received a whole new meaning. Kill-ing’s apprentices Allar Raja and Kaspar Taimsoo joined the World’s elite, bringing home World Championship bronze and European Championship gold medals. Opponents were crashed.

Raja and Taimsoo enabled Estonia’s long-standing international rowing success story to continue. Our Grand old Champion Jüri Jaanson – indeed Grand old Champion and not grand old champion – could step down for chan-ge. Having won the double sculls Olympic silver medal last year with teammate Tõnu Endrekson, Jaanson could not match these achievements on his own, with Endrekson taking time out for paternal duties. Yet at Estonian Cham-pionships he cleared the award table without mercy. We will wait and see what the 44-year old legend will do next!

Heavy weight judoka Martin Padar won the European Champion title, but his fi fth place from World Champion-ships meant failure. Decathlonist Mikk Pahapill and our long jump hope Ksenija Balta became European indoor champi-ons in the winter. Naturally, medal-less performance at the outdoor games thereafter was a disappointment.

All in all it was a pretty ordinary year. There was no rea-son for continuous ovation like in 2006, but we maintained the confi dence in our upcoming exciting sports’ years.

At the same time fresh mother Kristina !migun-Vähi has resumed to professional training. Should our skier manage to complement her existing Olympic medal col-lection at Vancouver games, we will no doubt applaud. Should her dream remain an attempt, we will salute her never the less! Kettaheite olümpiavõitja Gerd Kanter leppis eelmise MM-i kulla asemel Berliinis pronksiga. See oli pettumus, kuid optimistid meenutasid: just pronksi Kanteril varasematelt suurvõistlustelt polnudki!

Mae manages to catch the tailwind and fi nishes fi fth. This allows him to be the fi rst to congratulate his teammate, and to thank him at the same time. The winner then tucks away his face in the snow as to apologise for aggravating his competitors yet again. Veerpalu now holds two gold medals from both the Olympics and the World Championships.

Berliini MM-i eel oli Kanter kõndinud, kaunis kaa-sa Liina käevangus, Eesti presidendi vastuvõtul vabariigi aastapäeval, esitlenud Raul Rebasega kahasse kirjutatud raamatut ja juba Saksamaale jõudnuna omanimelist ketast. Mis tähtsam – ta oli võitnud 28 võistlust järjest, püstitanud ka maailma sisetippmargi 69.51.

By the opening of Berlin World Championships, Kanter had already managed a lot. He had walked down the red carpet with his beautiful wife Liina at the Annual Ball hosted by Estonia’s President, presented a jointly released book with manager Raul Rebane and demonstrated his custom-made discus when arriving in Germany. But most impor-tantly – he had already won 28 competitions in a row and set up World’s all time greatest indoor result of 69.51.

Märtsis tegid Torinos sisekergej õustiku EM-il imet Mikk Pahapill ja Ksenija Balta. Mõlemad võitsid kulla, kus-juures Pahapilli 6362 punkti seitsmevõistluses ja Balta 6.87 kaugushüppes jäid maailma sisehooaja parimateks.

At the European Indoor Cham-pionships in March, our athle-tes Mikk Pahapill and Ksenija Balta performed miracles. They both won a gold medal, with Pahapill’s 6362 at heptathlon and Balta’s 6.87 at long jump remaining World indoor records in 2009.

Esikümnekohti tuli Torinost veel. 400 m jooksus oli seitsmes Maris Mägi ja kolmikhüppes Jaanus Uudmäe. Seejuures kandus Uudmäe teise eestlasena 17 m joone taha, tõsi, isa Jaagu 17.35-ni annab 17.06-lt veel minna.

More athletes fi nished in top ten in Torino. Maris Mägi at 400 m and Jaanus Uudmäe at triple jump fi nished seventh. At the same time Uudmäe was only the second Estonian to ever cross the 17 m line. With his 17.06 father Jaak’s 17.35 is still out of reach.

Kolmikhüppaja Kaire Leibak, keda siin näeme hoopis presidendi vastuvõtul, leppis Torinos 13.99 ja 9. kohaga. Anna Ilju"t"enkole, kes lendas veebruaris kõrgemale kui ükski Eesti naine enne teda – 1.93-ni –, jäi see ka aasta laeks. EM-il oli ta kümnes.

Berliini MM-il oli Torino EM-i kangelastest edukaim Ksenija Balta, aga 8. koht teda ei rõõmustanud. Mikk Pahapill astus kümnevõistlejate kaugushüppes kolmel katsel üle. MM-i järel said mõlemad lohutust, kui Balta koduse Kuldliiga tugevas konkurentsis võitis ja Paha-pill Talence’i mainekal võistlusel isikliku tippmargiga teiseks tuli.

Out of Estonia’s Torino European Championship stars, Ksenija Balta was our most successful athlete at the Berlin World Championships, but the 8th place did not satisfy. At the same time Mikk Pahapill ended up step-ping over the line three times at decathlon long jump. Some comfort was received after Berlin though. Balta beat tough competition to win at home at Kuldliiga and Pahapill came second at the prominent Talance games with a new personal best result.

Viieteistkümnendana lõpetasid MM-i vigastuste-ga maadlev kuulitõukaja Taavi Peetre ja kümne-võistleja Andres Raja, koht tagapool oli odavis-kaja Mihkel Kukk.

Suve ühed meeldivamad üllatused serveeris kol-mikhüppaja Liane Pintsaar. Ta tuli Euroopa U 20 meistriks, seejärel alistas Eesti meistrivõistlustel põhialal treeningukaaslase Kaire Leibaku ja kaugushüppes Sirkka-Liisa Kivise. Tõsi, mõlemat kogenumat segas vigastus.

Some of the fi nest summer surprises were delive-red by triple jumper Liane Pintsaar. She won the European U20 Championships and at the Estonian Championships beat training companion Kaire Leibak at her main event, as well as Sirkka-Liisa Kivine in the long jump. In their defence, the two more senior athletes were both troubled by injuries at the time.

Kettaheitja Aleksander Tammert (vasakul), kes osales MM-il juba kaheksandat korda, jäi esimesena lõppvõistluselt välja. Raske suve lõpuks aga võitis ta koos Gerd Kanteriga Eestile Ergo maailmamän-gud. Tabelites Tammertist möödunud Märt Israeli MM läks vigastuse nahka.

Raja ja Taimsoo aastaMullusel Pekingi olümpial koos sõude legend Jüri Jaansoniga kahe-paadihõbeda võitnud Tõnu Endrek-son otsustas suve esimese poole puhata. Paatkondade koostamise kevadise katsevõistluse võitis tol päeval 25-aastane Allar Raja (pa-remal). Ta valis kaaslaseks veel neli aastat noorema Kaspar Taimsoo (vasakul). Algas uhke tõus. Luzerni MK-eta-pilt ja kogu MK-sarjast toodi kolmas koht, siis jõuti Poznani MM-il pronk-sile ja lõpuks Bresti EM-il kullale. Mõni ime siis, et treener Matti Killing rõõmuhoos vette visati.

A fi ne ascend was set into motion. Star-ting with the third place at the Luzern World Cup race, the pair fi nished third overall at the World Cup series. They went on to win Poz-nan World Championship bronze, followed by Brest European Championship gold. No wonder coach Matti Killing was thrown into the water in celebration spirits.

At the European Championships the team fi nished fourth.

Kaisa Pajusalu võitis kuni 23-aastas-te MM-il hõbemedali ja tegi ilusaid sõite ka täiskasvanute tippkonku-rentsis.

Kaisa Pajusalu won a silver medal at the U23 World Championships and displayed great form also against World’s best at the adult class races.

Jüri Jaanson istus olude sunnil taas ühepaati, millel on võitnud MM-kulla ja olümpiahõbeda. Taastutvust mõjutasid treeningueksperimendid ja puusavalu, MM jäi pooleli. Aga Eesti kulla korjas Jaanson kindlalt.

With Endrekson taking time o! , Jüri Jaanson moved back to the single-sculls, where he has won a World Championship gold and an Olympic silver in the past. Reunion was shattered by training experiments and hip problems, forcing to Jaanson to quit the World Championship series. Nevertheless, Estonian Champions-hip gold was won uncontested.

Martin Padar lõpuks kullal!Kunagine judo lapstäht Martin Padar rassis maa-ilma tatamidel pikki aastaid, tasuks EM-i hõbe ja pronksid. Sel kevadel jõudis 30-aastane ligi 140 kg kaaluv vägilane esimese täistabamuseni: Gruusia EM-ilt tuli kuld. 2006. aasta EM-pronksi Künter Rothbergi peeti vahepeal vaat et ravimatult haigeks, aga nüüd tuli ta – siin soomlast Antti Rintamäkit kaela riputades – Tallinna MK-l teiseks. Rotterdami MM-iks kolis Rothberg tulevikku arvestades kaalukategooria jagu kõrgemale ja jagas17. kohta.

2006 European Championship bronze Künter Rothberg was considered incurably injured for a long while, yet he returned – attempting to decorate his neck with Finnish Antti Rintamäki in the picture, he fi nished second at the Tallinn World Cup. At the Rotterdam World Championships Rothberg mo-ved up in the weight category for the future perspective, and fi nished on a shared 17th place.

Maanteel kindlustas Eesti esinumbri mainet Rein Taaramäe. Cofi dise rattur krooniti Baski tuuri mägede kuningaks, ta kolis paremate treeninguvõimaluste leidmiseks Nice’i, võitis Prantsusmaal elu esimese profi tuuri Tour de l’Ain, tuli Eesti meistriks nii aja- kui ka grupisõidus. Hispaania suurelt velotuurilt Vuel-ta ja MM-ilt veel kõrget kohta ei tulnud, kuid puhuti upitas noormees end pildile sealgi.

He did not yet reach the top at the re-nowned Spanish tour Vuelta or the World Championships, but still made it to the picture a few times there too.

Ujumise MM-il Roomas jõudsid poolfi naali kaks meie sportlast. 50 m liblikas andis Eesti rekord 26,16 Triin Aljandile 14. koha.

At the World Championships in Rome, two of our swimmers reached the semi-fi nals. 50 m butterfl y Estonian record 26.16 gave Triin Aljand the 14th place.

Kaks pügalat jäi Aljandile alla Martin Liivamägi. Ta alistas 200 m kompleksi eelujumises esimese eestlasena kaks minutit (1.59,95), ent fi naalis sama ei suutnud.

Martin Liivamägi fi nished two places lower than Aljand. In the fi rst round he swam the 200 m med-ley with 1.59,95, being the fi rst Estonian to ever conquer the 2 minute mark, but could not repeat the result in the fi nals.

Koondise kolmandaks numbriks võis pidada Jane Treppi, kes pärast vahepealset vigastust taas hoogsalt edeneb ja 50 m rinnuliujumises suure-pärase Eesti rekordiga 31,32 poolfi naalist vaid 17 sajandiksekundi kaugusele jäi.

Jane Trepp could be considered our National team’s third number. After interim injury, she is recovering fast and with a superb new Estonian record of 31,32 at the 50 m breaststroke, she missed out on a place in the fi nals by just 0,17 seconds.

Estonian men’s fencing has not displayed great results in the recent years. With this in mind, association chief Nikolai Novosjolov (left) has risen to the challenge and assumed leader’s role. Last year he passed the Olympic qualifi cations, this year he won the epée World Cup leg in Bogota. At the Bogota fi nals, he successfully beat World table leader French Gauthier Grumier´.

Eesti meistri karika võitis neljandat aastat järjest FC Levadia. Ühtlasi tegi meeskond ajalugu, jõudes esimese Eesti klubina Euroopa meistrite liiga kolman-dasse eelringi. Seal tuli alla vanduda Debrecenile. Pil-dil aga lüüakse rõõmutantsu pärast nimeka Krakowi Wisla alistamist.

For the fourth year running Estonian Champion’s cup was won by FC Levadia. The team also made history by being the fi rst Estonian club to make it to the European Champions League third round qualifi ers, where they lost to Debrecen. Federation Cupi üleminekumat!is alistasid Kaia Kanepi ja Maret Ani, kes siin koos kapten Rene Buschiga rõõmustavad, Iisraeli mängudega 3 : 2. Koos sedapuhku varusse jäänud Margit Rüütli ja Anett Schut-tinguga viidi Eesti maailmaliigasse, 16 tugevama riigi hulka.

Eesti käsipalli uhkeim kordaminek oli kuni 21-aastaste noormeeste pääs MM-i fi naalturniirile Egiptusse, kus kolme võiduga jõuti vahegruppi ja lõpetati 12. kohaga. Finaalturniiri resultatiiv-seim väravaviskaja ja sööduandja oli ülekaalu-kalt eestlane Mait Patrail. Rahvuskoondis jäi EM-i alagrupis neljandaks, kuigi lõpetas väärt viigiga olümpiahõbeda Islan-di vastu. Ka täismeeste seas oli vastaste peamine ohuallikas Patrail, keda pildil püüab kammitseda hõbedamees Ingimundur Ingimundarson.

The most notable achievement for Estonia’s handball was the U21 men’s qualifi cation for the U21 World Championships in Egypt, where the team won three matches, made it to B fi nals and fi nished on 12th place. At the same time, the entire tournament’s overwhelming top-scorer, with also the most assists to his name, was Estonian Mait Patrail. Our national team came 4th in their European Championship qualifi er group, but fi nished with a notable draw against Iceland’s Olympic silver medal team. Patrail was again the main source of danger for opposition, here being confronted by silver medallist Ingimundur Ingimundarson.

Eesti sulgpallitähtedest juhtus Kati Tolmo" l hooaja hakul autoavarii – maailma edetabelis 44. kohale tõusnu käis Taani kiirteel kolm tiiru üle katuse. Suisa hulle vigastusi siiski polnud ja peagi hakkasid auhinnad jälle kogunema.

Eesti esimene elukutseline golfi mängija Mari Suursalu tuli Soome heatasemelistel meistrivõistlus-tel kolmandaks.

Estonia’s fi rst pro-fessional golfer Mari Suursalu came third at the Finnish high-class tourna-ment.

Võistkondliku MM-i valikturniiril Jõelähtmel said Martin Toom (paremal) ja Mark Suursalu uskumatult kõrge 7. koha.

Veemotospordi MM-il võitis Eesti kaks kulda. Erko Aabrams, kes kihutab ülemisel pildil, oli parim klassis O-125 ja Art Raudva klassis T-550. EM-ilt hankis kumbki hõbeda.

Best rally result was delivered by Ott Tänak. Having won the European youth trials, Marko Märtin’s trainee made it into Pirelli team for the 2010 season and will be participating at the World Cham-pionships in an N-class car.

Motokrossi klassis MX1 võitis Tanel Leok aasta avaetapi, lõpuks oli ta seitsmes. Aigar Leok sai 12. ja Gert Krestinov 23. koha. Maailmameistriks tuli itaallane Antonio Cairoli. Siin näeme Cairolit (222) Sõmerpalu motokrossi stardis, külgedel Tanel Leok (8) ja Aigar Leok (111). Cairoli võitis Taneli ja Aigari ees onupoegade vanaisa Väino Leoki rändkarika.

Preili Mäe Eesti maadlust päästmasKaugelt enam kui sajandi vältel on eesti soost me-hed maadlusmatil võimu näidanud ja sõjasaagina suurel hulgal aumärke kodumaale kandnud. Nüüd jäi vastaste tuuseldamine naiste tööks. 17-aastane Epp Mäe teenis maadluses juunioride MM-i pronksi ja nii juunioride kui ka noorte EM-i hõbeda. Lisaks võitis ta sumos maailmamängud ja kogus muudelt tiitlivõist-lustelt veel kolm medalit.

Miss Mäe saving Estonian wrestlingFor well over a century, Estonian men have wrestled on tatamis around the World and brought home a number of trophies as a result. This time the task of taking down the enemy was left for women. 17-year-old Epp Mäe won a bronze at the Junior World Championships, and silver medals from both the Junior and Youth European Cham-pionships. In addition, she won sumo world games and collected three other medals from title competitions.

Kehakaalus kuni 96 kg kolm aastat tagasi maailmameist-riks tulnud Heiki Nabi pole tollast lennukust leidnud. Tänavu jäid laeks grand prix’i fi naalis Bakuus saavutatud viies koht ja Põhjamaade meistritiitel.

Iluuisutaja Jelena Glebova tiitlivõistlustelt eriti kõrgeid kohti ei saanud. Universiaadil tuli ta aga neljandaks ja muudelt tähtsatelt võistlustelt tõi auhindugi.

Figure skater Jelena Glebova did not achieve re-markable results at title competitions, but fi nished fourth at the Universiade, and collected a few more reputable awards.

Jäätantsija Kristjan Rand üllatas 2007. aasta juunioride MM-il hõbedaga, paariliseks Grethe Grünberg. Peagi aga lõpetas jalavigastus Grün-bergi karjääri. Samal ajal ja samal moel kaotas senise partneri ameeriklanna Caitlin Mallory. Tee viis Ranna ja Mallory kokku ning EM-il jõuti Eestit esindades 14. ja MM-il 20. kohani. Vancouveri olümpiaks tuli Malloryl Eesti kodakondsus saada ja ta saigi!

In 2007, ice dancer Kristjan Rand surprised with a Junior World Championship’s silver medal, then partnered by Grethe Grünberg. Shortly after, a foot injury fi nished Grünberg’s career. Roughly at the same time, American Caitlin Mallory lost her partner in the same way. Faith brought Rand and Mallory together and, representing Estonia, the team fi nished 14th at the European Champions-hips, and 20th at the World Championships. To be able to represent Estonia at the Vancouver Olym-pics, Mallory had to acquire Estonian citizenship, which she did!

Vaiko Vooremaa oli 20-aastane, kui ta DN-klassi jääpurjetamises esimest korda Euroopa meistriks krooniti. Nüüd, 46-aastasena pälvis ta neljanda kulla.

After a good couple of decades as one of Estonia’s basketball heroes, with a successful background also from a number of European clubs, Gert Kulla-mäe became the manager of Tartu Ülikool / Rock. He is keeping in good shape to coach players, in this instance Sven Kaldre (10), right there on the court.

ESTIL: „Veatu tehnikaga nagu Veerpalu ei sõida klassikat keegi teine. Ja tal on fantastiline mootor.“Norra suusataja Frode Estil, kahekordne olümpiavõitja ja maailmameister, lahkus suurest spordist kaks talve taga-si. Ta oli nüüdseks 38-aastase veterani Andrus Veerpaluga pidanud palju karme lahinguid ja jaganud korduvalt aujärge, tõsi, eestlaste rõõmuks on ta meile olulistel tundidel seisnud pisut madalamal.

„Olen Andrusest aasta noorem, aga mulle aitas võide-tud medalitest. Ei suutnud enam motivatsiooni leida ja teisest küljest sai mulle kergete rajaprofi ilidega mass-startidest tõepoolest kõrini. Imetlusväärne, et Andrus suudab jätkata ja ta MM-il võitis! Motivatsioon otsustab ju lõpuks kõik,“ arutles Estil.

„Tean, et Andrusel oli põlvega palju probleeme. Ta pidi ühe talve päris vahele jätma. Tean, kui raske on pärast hullu lõikust rajale tagasi tulla ja kui raske on leida selleks optimaalset teed: tahad metsikult treenida, aga ei tohi … Andrus suutis rabelemist vältides ja rahu säilita-des töötada, töötada, töötada ...“

Praegu suusakolled!is noori koolitav Estil väidab, et uskus Veerpalu naasmisse: „Tean ju ka, et veatu super-tehnikaga nagu Veerpalu ei sõida klassikat keegi teine ja võrdväärselt treenida on üsna võimatu. Ja tal on fan-tastiline mootor. Kahju vaid, et mass-stardi kergel rajal suudavad kehvemad, ent kiirete liigutustega mehed meiesuguste heale mootorile vastu hakata.“

ESTIL: „No one else has Veerpalu’s fl awless technique. And he has a fantastic engine.“Norwegian skier, double Olympic winner and World champion Frode Estil retired from professional sports two winters ago. During his career he had held countless of ruthless duels with our now 38-year-old veteran And-rus Veerpalu, sharing titles from competition to compe-tition. For Estonians’ joy, he ended up standing on lower pedestals than Veerpalu at hours of importance to us.

“I am a year younger than Andrus, but I was satisfi ed with my medal collection. I could not keep up the motiva-tion any more and on the other hand I also got bored of the mass start easy-profi le tracks. It is rather spectacular that Andrus can keep it up and that he won at the World Cham-pionships! At the end of the day – motivation is the key.”

“I know Andrus had lots of trouble with his knee. He had to skip an entire season. I know how hard it is to return to the tracks after major surgery and how di" cult it is to fi nd the optimal way for it – you want to train hard, but are not allowed to… Andrus managed to avoid rushing and to patiently work, work and work…”

Estil, who now coaches the young at ski academy claims that he always believed in Veerpalu’s return. “I also know that no one else has Veerpalu’s fl awless super-tech-nique and it is more or less impossible to train as hard. And he has a fantastic engine. It is a bit of a shame that at mass-start easy tracks our kind of strong engines can be over-powered by weaker yet faster skiers.

The Norwegian ace believes that Veerpalu can successfully continue to ski even after his 40th birthday. Himself he is claims to be missing Estonia and would like to return to compete here again some day. “Due to my work, I train with the boys at least fi ve times a week, and occasionally ski for fun too. I could not beat Veerpalu any more but I still love skiing.”

Estil admits that watching high-level classical races makes him long for the old times, but snaps: “When I see the newcomers bickering at the mass-start line, I feel extremely pleased to have quit. I would not return at that level even if physique enabled to do so. Otherwise I am happy to compete. I was invited to participate at your Suverull this summer too, but I declined to stay at home with my then pregnant wife, who in September gave birth to our third son Filip. Perhaps I can make it to Tartu Marathon… I just know that I have a few fi nal territories left to share with Andrus and Jaak!”

Harting peab pausi ja hüüatab: „Aga! See oli juuli kes-kel, kui raadiost öeldi, et Gerd alahindab mind, eelmise MM-i hõbedat, ning peab oma tugevaimateks vastas-teks Virgilijus Aleknat ja Piotr Malachowskit! Olin Gerdi hoiakust pettunud, aga täna tean, et mind alahinnates tegi Gerd vea! Sel päeval muutus minus kõik: sealtpeale treenisin kuni MM-ini seitse päeva nädalas ja seitse tundi päevas … Siin ma nüüd olen – vist esimene, kes 25. sünnipäeva eel 68 meetrist parema tulemusega maailma-meistriks on tulnud.“

Harting püstitas Berliinis isikliku tippmargi 69.43, ent maailmarekordist ta ei räägi: „Mina hoian unistused en-dale. Ometi arvan, et Kanteri võimsast seljatagusest Team 75+ on kasu kogu maailma kettaheitele.“

TAMMERT: „Gerdi närve krutiti kogu hooaja, meediamulli puhuti tema enda meeskonnast.“„Gerd Kanteri närve krutiti kogu hooaja, meediamulli pu-huti tema oma meeskonnast. Tal oli vaja aina võita ja tükk aega ta võitis ka,“ ütleb Aleksander Tammert, olümpia ja EM-i pronks.

„Mäletame, et noorena ei tulnud Gerd suure närvipin-gega toime. Ei tulnud nüüdki. Ta ei arvestanud, et vasta-sed EM-il nõnda kaugele heidavad ning kui see juhtus, ei suutnud enam enda jaoks tavalise 69 ja poole meetrini jõuda. Jalg läks mõne heite järel raskeks, tehnika lagunes ja võistlusrõõm kadus, algas punnitamine.“

Kolmekümnesest Kanterist seitse aastat vanem Tam-mert on siiski optimist: „Ma arvan, et uuel aastal pöördub kõik rööpasse, pigem lisab Berliinis juhtunu janu! Iseasi, kas Gerd kogu aeg võidab, sest Harting ja Malachowski on nooremad ning arenevad kindlasti.“

Norra äss leiab, et Veerpalu võib tulemuslikult suusa-tada ka pärast 40. eluaastat. Ta ise igatsevat Eesti järele ja tahtvat siia võistlema tulla. „Töö käigus suusatan poistega viis korda nädalas, lisaks sõidan vahel lusti. Veerpalule ma enam vastu ei saa, aga suusatamist armastan ikka.“

Estil tunnistab, et igatseb suurvõistluste klassikasõite jälgides kunagiste aegade järele, aga sajatab: „Kui näen neid uute meeste mass-stardi juurde kuuluvaid kraaklusi, olen loobumisotsusega ülimalt rahul. Ma ei tuleks suurde suusatamisse tagasi isegi siis, kui kehaline treenitus lubaks. Niisama tahan võistelda küll. Mind kutsuti tänavu teie Suverullile. Loobusin vaid seetõttu, et abikaasa ootas mu kolmandat poega, septembris sündinud Filipit. Ehk leian aega tulla Tartu maratonile. Igatahes tean, et mul on Andruse ja Jaaguga veel puid-maid jagada!“

Vancouveri olümpia 50 km ühisstardiklassika kulla-soosikuks Estil Veerpalu ei pea: „Kiired lõpetajad, nagu Norra Petter Northug, Eldar Rönning ja Oddbjörn Hjelme-set ning sakslane Axel Teichmann, jäävad favoriitideks. Kui on raske ilm, võib Veerpalu saada võimaluse ja ka Jaak Mae jõuda heale kohale.“

MAE: „See on sisemine põlemine. Andrus jaksab rohkem tahta kui teised.“„Motivatsioon tuleb Andruse hingest, see on sisemine põlemine. Andrus jaksab rohkem tahta kui teised ja põlveveast tingitud paus kasvatas tahet veelgi,“ arutleb Veerpalu treeningukaaslane, olümpiapronks ja MM-hõbe Jaak Mae.

„Andrus ei anna endale iial armu. Tundub, et mida rohkem tekib raskusi, seda enam koguneb talle energiat. Ta alustab trenni eel soojendusega siis, kui meie veel kodus haigutame, ja lõpetab trennijärgsed venitused siis, kui meie kodus tagasi oleme. Olen püüdnud sarnaselt tegutseda, aga erinevalt Andrusest ei oska ma sealt kasu saada. Treener Mati Alaver teeb ju tööplaanid ja analüü-sid, aga lõpuks tuleb sportlasel ikkagi ise lahendused leida – ning Andrus tunnetab end jube hästi.

Kui lisada laitmatu võistlejanärv ja suurepärased tausta jõud, tulebki midagi ideaalset välja …“

HARTING: „Olin Gerdi hoiakust pettunud, aga täna tean, et mind alahinnates tegi Gerd vea!“„Kui Gerd Kanter hooaega ülipikkade heidete ja võitude-ga alustas, olin üsna kindel, et ta alistab mu kaasmaalase Jürgen Schulti maailmarekordi 74.08,“ räägib Saksamaa kettamees, nüüdne valitsev maailmameister Robert Har-ting. „Ootasin aina, millal kuulen uudist „Kanter püstitas maailmarekordi!“. Ent rekordit ei tulnud. Samal ajal ei uskunud minu edusse keegi, sest heitsin 64 ja 66 meetri vahele. Ka ise arvasin, et seljavalu ei lase mul MM-il kau-gele heita. Olin kurb.“

At the upcoming Vancouver Olympics Estil does not consider Veerpalu a favourite to win the 50 km mass-start classical style race. “Fast fi nishers like Norwegian Petter Northug, Eldar Rönning and Oddbjörn Hjelmeset as well as German Axel Teichmann are favourites. Veerpalu will have a chance, and if the weather is tough, even Jaak Mae will fi nish in a good place.”.

MAE: „It’s an internal fl ame. Andrus has the strength to want more than all the others.“„For Andrus motivation comes from his soul, it’s an internal fl ame. He has the strength to want more than all the others, and the problems with his knee only fed the fi re,” sais Veerpalu’s training companion Jaak Mae, who has an Olym-pic bronze and a World Championship silver to his name.

“Andrus never has mercy on himself. It seems the more problems he has, the more energy he will build up. He starts his warm up to trainings when most of us are still yawning at home, and fi nishes his after-stretc-hing when others are back at home. I have tried to work in this way, but unlike Andrus, I do not know how to benefi t from it. Coach Mati Alaver is the man to draw up schedules and analysis, but at the end of the day it is still the athlete who has to deliver upon them – and Andrus seems to know himself exceptionally well.

When you now add cold competitive nerves and a great support system to the mix, the outcome is bound to be something extremely close to perfection…”

HARTING: „Gerd’s attitude disappointed me at fi rst, but today I know undermining me was his mistake!“„When Gerd Kanter started the season with a series of outstandingly long throws and victories, I was sure he would go on to break my fellow German Jürgen Schult’s world record of 74.08,” says German discus thrower, now World Champion Robert Harting. “I kept waiting for the news “Kanter set up a new World record!” But the news never came. At the same time no one believed in me with my throws remaining between 64 and 66 meters. Due to continuous back pain, I did not expect to do well at the World Championships either. I was sad.”

Harting pauses for a moment before his face lights up: “But! It was in the middle of July when they said on the radio that Gerd does not consider me, the last World Championship silver medallist, a threat, and that he regards Virgilijus Alekna and Piotr Malachowski as his strongest rivals! Gerd’s outlook disappointed me at fi rst, but today I know undermining me was a mistake! Everyt-hing in me changed that day. From this moment until the World Championships I trained seven days a week, seven hours a day... And here I am today – probably the fi rst man ever to have become the World Champion with a longer throw than 68 meters before my 25th birthday.“

Harting’s result of 69.43 was his new personal best, yet he does not talk about the World record. „I keep my dreams to myself. But at the same time I do believe Kanter’s strong background, the Team 75+, is a benefi t to the entire discuss World.“

TAMMERT: „Gerd’s nerves were challenged throughout the season, with his own team responsible for blowing up the media bubble.“

With his 37 years of age Tammert is seven years older than Kanter, and remains optimistic: “I believe everything will be back on track for Kanter in the coming year. If anything, Berlin misfortune will add to his hunger! It is another matter whether he can win all the time. Harting and Malachowski are younger and will defi nitely continue to develop further.”

„Mina arvan, et väikese riigi koondisele pole kuigi kasulik, kui on kaks ägedalt konkureerivat kahepaati,“ manitseb Cop resoluutselt. „Eestil oleks ilmselt mõistlik moodustada noortest ja vanadest staaridest neljapaat, millele ei pruugi maailmas vastast ollagi.“

Cop on Raja ja Taimsoo askeldusi silmanurgast jälginud ning arvab: „Kehajõudu pole neil vist nii palju kui Jüril ja Tõnul, aga see ei ole ainuke näitaja. Kui nad toovad MM-ilt pronksi ja EM-ilt kulla, siis peab sõudeteh-nika neile sobima. Jõudu, kogemusi ja koostööd lisandub aastatega. Huvitav paar igal juhul!“

Alekna loodab, et saab Kanterile veel mõnegi lahingu anda. „Suurtel võistlustel näeb mind vaid siis, kui tunnen jõudu vähemalt esikaheksasse mahtuda. Siis olen kõbus vanamees, kes loomulikult tahab märksa enamat.“

Alekna on Tammertiga sama meelt: „Suurt sportlast tugevdab iga samm, ka altminek viib edasi. Treenib rohkem, sätib vaimu. Pinged jäävad, aga eks favoriidi-pingetega peab nüüd toime tulema ka maailmameister Harting. Meid ootab huvitav kettaheiteaasta!“

COP: „Eestil oleks mõistlik moodustada noortest ja vanadest staaridest neljapaat.“Sloveenia sõudja Iztok Cop sai MM-il 1990 roolijata neljapaadil seitsmenda koha. Ta oli 18-aastane. Sealsamas Barringtoni järvel võitis seitse aastat vanem Jüri Jaanson ühepaadil kulla. Ent Cop jätkas karjääri sedavõrd võim-salt, et pääses tänavuseni igal aastal tippvõistluse A-fi naa-li. Paariskahesel on ta olümpiavõitja (2000) ja kolmekord-ne maailmameister.

Even a failure takes you forward.“37-year-old Lithuanian Virgilijus Alekna has won two gold medals and a bronze from Olympics, two gold and two silver medals from World Championships and a gold, silver and bronze medal from the European Champions-hips. In the World’s all time greatest table he ranks on a second place with 73.88, in between World record holder Schult (74.08) and our Kanter (73.38).

“Bronze in not a bad achievement even for a great at-hlete and I have learned to feel delight over these medals too,” sais the former longstanding World leader, whose rule was ended by Kanter a few years ago. “I suppose only Kanter himself knows best, why he did not fully succeed at the World Championships. Harting and Malachowski were in top form, Gerd was unsure of himself. But unlike me, Gerd is still young and has time left for more victories and records!”

Alekna is hoping to have a few more battles ahead with Kanter. “You will see me at great competitions when I feel strong enough to fi nish at least within top 8. I will then be that jolly old man, who of course wants a lot more.”

Alekna agrees with Tammert: “Great athletes gain strength from every experience. Even a failure takes you forward. He will train harder, prepare mentally. The pressure will remain, but also Harting will now be coping with the weight of being a favourite to win. We are in for a very interesting discus year!“

COP: „Estonia should form a four-sculls team of young and senior rowers.“Slovenian rower Iztok Cop fi nished seventh at the 1990 World Championship four-sculls race. He was 18. At the same time, on the very same Lake Barrington seven years older Jüri Jaanson won a single sculls gold. Yet Cop went on to continue his career with such supremacy that he made it to the A-fi nals every single year until now. He is a double-sculls Olympic winner (2000) and a triple World champion.

“Unbelievable stability!” praises Jaanson to give credit to his long-standing rival, who in the summer of 2009 moved to a four-boat in order to coach the young, thus won no medals. Cop admits that he and long-time partner Luka !pik needed a break from each other for the time being. He does not believe that he would be sharing a double-boat with !pik again in the future, but admits that it is not comp-letely impossible. Should this happen, the two would be up against our now World Championship bronze team Allar Raja and Kaspar Taimsoo as well as Olympic silver medallists Jüri Jaanson and Tõnu Endrekson.

“I personally believe that it is not very good for a small country like yours to have two this strong double-sculls competing against each other,” disapproves Cop radically. “It would probably be more sensible to form a four-boat with the young and the senior stars, which might even be unbeatable by any team in the World.”

Cop has kept an eye on Raja’s and Taimsoo’s progress and comments: “They might not have quite the physical power like Jüri and Tõnu, but this is not the only indicator in rowing. If they can bring home a bronze from World Championships and a gold from European Champions-hips, they must feel comfortable with the technique. Strength, experience and co-operation ability will come with the years. A very promising team without doubt!”

JAANSON: „Raja’s and Taimsoo’s strengths are their young age, freshness and the desire to conquer the World.“„Raja-Taimsoo double-sculls team’s strengths are defi ni-tely their young age, freshness and the desire to conquer the World. Their development is further advanced by well matched personalities and capacity as well as a very good support system,“ analyses Jüri Jaanson, who a year earlier won an Olympic silver medal with Tõnu Endrekson in the same double-sculls event. “All there is to be added to these young athletes will now come with years.”

When asked if he and Tõnu would like to beat the two youngsters in a great duel, Jaanson says: “I am happy that Tõnu and I got the boat into motion and that we won some great races. We did not win the brightest of all medals, but this does not spoil the overall picture. Right now the double-sculls are a past era for me…”

But in that case perhaps a four-sculls with Raja, Taim-soo, Jaanson and Endrekson? Just like Cop suggested.

“These thoughts have come about here too. We do have great talents,” admits Jaanson.

TMENOV: „To fi ght Padar, you always need maximum composure.“Russian judoka Tamerlan Tmenov is a jolly chap just like our “part-time TV- comedian” Martin Padar – only so far more accomplished. Tmenov is a seven-time European Champion and has six Olympic and World Championship medals. This year he had to skip the European Cham-pionships due to foot injury, allowing Padar, who has lost all four previous matches to him, to win the gold.

Lebedeva ei usu, et ta ise suudaks isiklikku tippmarki 7.33 veel uuen-dada, kuid on veendunud, et Baltale pole see tulemus piir. „Aga kõigepealt tuleb seitse meetrit täis saada, see viib vaimselt uuele tasemele,“ ütleb venelanna elutargalt. Siiski ei usu ta, et ukrainlanna Galina T"istjakova 21 aastat vana maailma-rekord 7.52 ohus oleks: „Igatahes ei näe ma praegu hüp-pajat, kes tänase tiheda kontrolli tingimustes sinnakanti võiks jõuda.“

Tänavuse EM-i kaotus Pahapillile ja ukrainlasele Aleksei Kasjanovile hinge suurt mõra ei jätnud. Ta on ikkagi kümnevõistleja …

„Pahapill on 26 aastat vana. Selleks, et kümnevõistlu-ses kuhugi jõuda, vajab ta arenguhüpet,“ jätkab !ebrle

soniga just paariskahesel olümpiahõbeda võitis. „Kõik see, mida noortele meestele lisanduda võib, tuleb aastatega.“

Küsimusele, kas talle ja Tõnule meeldiks noorhärra-dele suures duellis koht kätte näidata, vastab Jaanson: „Mulle teeb heameelt, et saime Tõnuga paadi jooksma ja võitsime häid sõite. Kirkaim jäi saavutamata, aga see ei riku üldpilti. Praegu on kahene minu jaoks pigem läbitud etapp ...“

Siis ehk neljane, kus sõuavad Raja, Taimsoo, Jaanson ja Endrekson? Nagu soovitab Cop.

„Selliseid mõtteid liigub ka siinmail. Häid mehi meil on,“ tähendab Jaanson.

TMENOV: „Padariga võitlemiseks tuleb end alati maksimaalselt kokku võtta.“Venemaa judoka Tamerlan Tmenov on muhe mees nagu „poole kohaga telekoomik“ Martin Padargi – seni küll edukam. Tmenovil on seitse EM-kulda, olümpialt ja MM-ilt on ta kogunud kuus medalit. Tänavu jäi ta jalavigastuse tõttu EM-ist kõrvale ja Padar, kes on seni Tmenovile kõik neli kohtumist kaotanud, teenis kulla.

„4 : 0 ei tähenda üksi midagi. Padariga võitlemiseks tu-leb end alati maksimaalselt kokku võtta. Need olid rasked võidud väärika vastase üle. Ega muud, kui et ma olen kogenum. Jõudu Martinil jätkub, altminekud on olnud peas kinni. Mul on olnud rohkem võiduusku, aga iga mat" algab otsast ja ma ei tea, millal Martin mulle tuule alla võib teha. Tal on ka tehnikas arenguvaru.“

Tmenov on 185 cm pikk ehk Padarist üheksa senti-meetrit lühem. Kas annab see eestlasele eelise?

„Palju meil see seis oligi? 4 : 0? No ju siis suurt eelist ei anna,“ itsitab venelane. „Ja kümme kilo tasuks tal oma 140-st alla võtta, siis lisandub kiirust.“

Treener Aavo Põhjala vaidleb vastu: „Kui Martin end 140 kiloga hästi tunneb, tuleb just selle kaaluga ka töö-tada!“

TÖLZER: „Padarit ja mind ootab palju mõlemale raskeid kohtumisi.“Miks Tmenov Padarist vaid kaks aastat vanema-na tunduvalt kogenum on? Miks ütleb ka Padarist aasta noorem sakslane Andreas Tölzer, et on kogenum?

„Aga seepärast, et meie Tmenoviga oleme kauem raskekaalus võistelnud. Martin ei pääsenud raskekaallasena areenile, sest Indrek Pertelson oli ees. Raskekaal on ikka midagi muud: aegla-sem, jõulisem,“ vastab Euroopa eksmeister Tölzer, Padari klubikaaslane Abensbergist.

„Martin on minuga väga sarnane, ründa-me mõlemad vasakult. Praegu, pakun, oleme

will fi nally beat me. He also has some technical gaps left to fi x.”

Tmenov is 185 cm tall, which makes him 9 cm shorter than Padar. Does this give an advantage for the Estonian?

“Now what was the score between us again? 4 : 0? I suppose not really then,” chuckles the Russian. “And he should loose 10 kg from his 140 kg weight. This would make him faster.”

Coach Aavo Põhjala retaliates: “If Martin feels in good shape with the 140 kg, he should be working at that weight!”

TÖLZER: „Padar and I have a lot of matches ahead that will be tough for both.“Why is Tmenov, just two years older than Padar, a lot more experienced than him? Why does German Andreas Tölzer, a year younger than Padar, also consider himself more experienced?

“It’s because Tmenov and I have competed in heavy-weight category longer. Martin did not make it into lime-light in heavy-weight because Indrek Pertelson already stood there. Heavy-weight is something else – slower, more powerful,” answers former European champion, Padar’s fellow club member at Abensberg.

“Martin and I are very alike - we both attack from the left. Right now I think we are fairly

equal, but Martin’s recent overwhelming vic-tory over me at the World Championships displayed his faster development.”

Tölzer does not emphasise much on the fact that he has won four out of fi ve matches between the two: “I have had

luck on my side… Martin says he will con-tinue to fi ght after London Olympics, and

I can say the same about myself. Padar and I have a lot of matches ahead that will be tough for both.“

LEBEDEVA: „Ksenija Balta has a number of strengths. She is light and springy.”33-year-old Russian long- and triple jump star, with gold medals from the Olympics, European and World Cham-pionships considers ten years younger Ksenija Balta a great talent.

“Ksenija Balta has a number of strengths. She is light and springy, has heptathlons’ strong preparation, she can put up with wind and bad weather, and can interact with

the audience. And Andrei Nazarov is an experienced coach,” lists Lebede-va. “I think this is only the beginning of Ksenija’s career as an athlete. If she builds up self-confi dence, learns to cope with failure, traumas and disappointment, and to time her form, she will be in for a great future!”

Lebedeva does not believe she herself could improve her personal best of 7.33, but is confi dent that Balta will. “However, fi rst the 7-meter line has to be conquered. This takes you to the next level,” explains the Russian wisely. At the same time she does not consider Ukrainian Galina T"istjakova’s 21-year-old World record of 7.52 to be in jeopardy: “At least I cannot see any athletes achieve this in today’s tough testing conditions.”

!EBRLE: „Pahapill has to train hard, extre-mely hard even, in order to develop further.“„Mikk Pahapill is a talent. He has the prerequisites for a lot more in decathlon than the current 8255 points,” says Check Roman !ebrle with confi dence. „I will have to bare this in mind for the next three years, because I have decided to stay on board until the 2012 London Olympics.“

!ebrle tunnistab, et ei tea täpselt Euroopa sisemeistri tänavuse suve ebaõnne põhjuseid, kuid kaitseb teda: „Olen oma nahal tundnud, kuidas üks vigastus võib kogu ilusa ettevalmistusmudeli uppi lüüa.“

NOOL: „Mikul on eeldusi pikemate jooksude mahajäämus tasa teha.“„Polnud inimest, keda ei üllatanuks Mikk Pahapilli talvine EM-kuld.“ Nii sõnab Erki Nool, kümnevõistluse olümpia-võitja aastast 2000. „Mikk ise üllatus ka.“Nool, kelle Eesti seitsmevõistluse rekordist 6374 Paha pill vaid tosin punkti vähem kogus, jätkab talle omase kriiti-kaga: „Seitsmevõistlusega võrreldes jäi Miku suvi loomuli-kult nõrgaks. 8400 tulnuks igal juhul täis saada, aga Mikk ei läinud ühelgi üksikalal edasi. Kümnevõistluse esimene päev lõpeb 400 meetri jooksuga ja kui sa punnimisele vaatamata saad aja üle 50 sekundi, näitab see kehva üldt-reenitust! See ei vasta tippkümnevõistleja omale. Nii ongi jalad teiseks päevaks pehmed.“

„Paberil on kümnevõistlus lihtne, liida vaid alad kokku,“ jätkab 8815 punkti kogunud Nool 8255 punkti omaniku Pahapilli armutut hindamist. „See pole raketi-teadus, et üldtreenitus otsustab kõik. Ainult tahtejõud edasi ei vii ja kõva teivashüppetrenn 400 meetri jooksu ei arenda. Mikul on kõik võimalused kõrgele jõuda, kuid ta peab aega arvestama – ta pole lootustandev poisike, vaid 26-aastane täismees.“

Nool provotseerib veel: „Tegelikult ei tea ma ju Paha-pilli eesmärki. Ehk ongi talle 8255-st küll. Eestis juhtub tihti, et unistus ja eesmärk aetakse segamini. Kuid Mikul on eeldusi pikemate jooksude – 400 meetrit ja 1500 meetrit arenevad ka koos! – mahajäämus tasa teha ja kümnevõistluses kõrgele tõusta.“

“Pahapill is 26 years old. To get somewhere in decathlon he needs a development leap,” continues !ebrle, referring mostly to the 400 and 1,500 m running. “Pahapill needs to train hard, extremely hard even, in order to develop further. You have to improve your weaker events with the help of mental strength. If you want great medals, you cannot a# ord to have weak events or instability at the strong ones.”

!ebrle admits that he does not fully comprehend why our European indoor champion’s performances failed this summer, but speaks in his defence: “I know it from own experience how one injury can reduce your entire preparation module to rubble.”

NOOL: „Mikk has the potential to make up for his long distance defi ciency.“„There was not a man alive who would not have been surprised over Mikk Pahapill’s European Championship gold this winter.” The latter comes from Erki Nool, our decathlon Olympic winner from 2000. “Even Mikk himself was surprised.”

Regardless of his own heptathlon personal best being only 12 points better than Pahapill’s winning 6,374, Nool continues with his classical censure: “Of course, com-pared to his heptathlon success Mikk’s summer was a failure. He should at least have achieved 8,400 points, but Mikk did not surpass any of his old personal bests on any individual event. The fi rst day in decathlon fi nishes with 400 m. If you cannot do better than 50 seconds at it even if you try, it displays a bad overall form! It simply does not comply with what is vital for great athletes in decathlon. So you will end up with feeble feet for the second day.”

“On the paper decathlon is easy – just add up the event scores,” continues 8,815 point holder Nool with his merciless judgement of the 8,255 point holder Pahapill. “It’s no rocket science that overall fi tness decides everyt-hing. Willpower is not enough, and training hard for pole-vault does not improve your 400 m fi tness level. Mikk has all the opportunities to fl y high, but he has to consider the time factor – he is no longer a promising kid but a 26-year-old mature man.”

Nool continues to provoke: “But in all fairness I do not know Pahapill’s ultimate goals. In Estonia, it is often the case that dreams and goals get mixed up. But Mikk has the potential to make up for his longer distances’ defi ciency – 400 m and 1,500 m can be developed simul-taneously – and to raise to the top in decathlon.”

Koos Erika Kirpu, Katerina Lehise ja Gaia-Marianna Siimuga teenis ta ka võistkonnakulla. Hõbeda tõi Epp Mäe maadluses (–70 kg), pronksile tulid Martti Keel ja Rauno Liivrand rannavõrkpallis. Lisagem, et olümpiajahtideni viival purjekal Zoom 8 teenis Anna Pohlak kulla ja Aksel Artus pronksi.
