    Anuradhapura

This city is hailed to be the birth place of Sinhala civilization. It was used as the capital of this island from

4th century B.C according to epic of Sinhala history Mahawansa. Until 11th century A.D this was the

capital of Sri Lanka and it is regarded as one of the most stable and durable centers of political power in

South East Asia during its existence. City of Anuradhapura is highly regarded highly sacred by Buddhists

all around the world. A unique feature about this city is that it is surrounded by Buddhist monasteries

which are built by the ancient kings who ruled the land from this capital.

Anuradhapura was the capital of this island from 4th B.C to 11th A.D. But as the protecting

wilderness round it diminished with prosperity, and ever growing hunger for the royal succession was an

apparent, it became a common target of South Indian expansion. The finale came when the Chola King

Rajaraja I invaded Sri Lanka, looted and burnt the city to ashes. Anuradhapura was finally abandoned

and the Capital withdrawn to more Immune Polonnaruwa.

But the monuments of its glory days survive, giving everyone a chance re imagine its wonder days.
