QUOTE OF THE

DAYGender & growthInternational Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Christine Lagarde is more than right. It is indeed an “economic no-brainer” that if wom-en participate in the same numbers as men in the workforce, it would have dramatic growth out-comes in national economies. For example, the 50:50 men-women participation would boost the growth of India’s economy by 27 per cent, of Tur-key’s by 22 per cent, of the United States’ by 5 per cent and of Japan’s by 9 per cent. It should have been apparent from a theoretical perspective that this would be the case. Making allowances for exaggeration, it can be seen from the Indian numbers the impact it would have. According to the 2011 Census figures, only 33 per cent of the women in the working age group are part of the work force. That is, 125 million out of the total female workforce of 388 million are working. The global average for women’s participation in the advanced economies is 50 per cent. It is 63 per cent in East Asian economies. The situa-tion, of course, is more complicated than it would appear. The Indian situation reflects the issue in all its complexity. An IMF working paper shows that there is a greater participation of women in the rural workforce because of low incomes and higher poverty levels. When incomes rise in rural and urban households, women’s participation in the workforce goes down. That is, women work in poorer households to supplement and boost earnings. Higher incomes earned by male workers of the family leads to women dropping out of the workforce. It is a sociological phenomenon based on traditional biases as well as work choices. That is, women are willing to work and men willing to consent to it if the economic situation is bad. Once economic conditions improve, old biases about gender roles reassert themselves. There is also the fact that women who are not part of the formal and informal sectors of the economy are still engaged in household work and bringing up children. Many women withdraw from the work-force in order to bring up children. Lack of educa-tion is another key factor that inhibits greater par-ticipation of women in the workforce. There has been much debate about women and economic development. There is a consensus that econom-ic development would be incomplete if half the population is left out or left behind. Now comes the argument that gender equality, which includes participation of women in economic activities, is an imperative for economic growth.

Bangladesh police said on Monday they are seeking to arrest national cricket-er Shahadat Hossain and his wife for allegedly beating their 11-year-old maid who works in their home. Police raided the house of the pace bowler and his wife Nritto Sha-hadat on Sunday night after officers found the injured and crying maid on a street in the capital Dhaka. “She had injury marks on her eyes and some other parts of the

body. She was crying when we rescued her,” police inspector Anwar Hossain. “She told us that she was working as a maid in cricketer Shaha-dat’s house and alleged that he and his wife tor-tured her,” he said. The maid, Mahfuza Akter Happy, who appeared to have a swollen black eye, alleged to private televi-sion Channel 24 on Sun-day night that the couple beat her. Police have sent the girl to a Dhaka hospi-tal for treatment and filed a case against the couple

accusing them of child repression, local police officer Tanvir, who uses one name, said. “We raid-ed the house of Shaha-dat on Sunday night but did not find them. This morning we continued our efforts to arrest the couple,” Tanvir. Shaha-dat, who played 38 Tests and 51 one-day interna-tionals for Bangladesh, missed out on the recent series against India and South Africa after twist-ing his ankle during a Test match against Paki-stan in May.

Barcelona were crowned kings of Europe for the fifth time after beating Juventus 3-1 in a superb Champions League final at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday, capping their magnificent season with a treble of titles. Goals from Ivan Rakitic in the fourth minute, Luis Su-arez in the 68th and Bra-zilian Neymar at the end of stoppage time sealed the Catalans’ second tre-ble, following their feat in 2009, after they also won the La Liga title and Spanish King’s Cup. “It’s incredible, a dream, some-thing unique,” Suarez told Spanish television. “To win these competitions you have to suffer, if not it’s not worth it, and to-day( on Saturday) we had to suffer to win the match.” It was the Ital-ians’ who had the bitter taste, though, as Juve, who became the first team in the history of the com-petition to lose six finals in total, having also now been defeated in their last

four. “We believed we had a chance of pulling off this great feat but we didn’t manage it and the best team won,” said Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. “In football that doesn’t always happen but this time that was the case.” Barca overcame a nervous start when a sublime combination, in which all 10 outfield players touched the ball, eventually saw Neymar feed captain Andres Inies-ta, who picked out Rakitic to score the fourth fastest goal in a European Cup final. Juve goalkeeper Gi-anluigi Buffon, who won the World Cup in Berlin’s Olympic stadium in 2006 with Italy, denied Barce-lona a second goal in the 13th minute with a superb one-handed save to keep out a Dani Alves shot. The 38-year-old stopper again came to the rescue three minutes after the restart and Juve then grabbed an equaliser against the run of play through former Real Madrid striker Alva-ro Morata. Ben Stokes has insisted he did not wilfully ob-struct the field during the second ODI at Lord’s on Saturday after he suf-fered one of cricket’s rarest forms of dismiss-al. England’s 64-run de-feat by world champions Australia was overshad-owed by the controversy that ensued early in the 26th over of their run chase. Stokes, went down

the pitch and played a Mitchell Starc delivery back to the left-arm fast bowler, who then aimed a powerful throw back in his direction as he tried for a run-out. As Stokes leaned back and turned to make his ground, the ball hit the Durham all-rounder’s arm. Aus-tralia appealed and, after lengthy deliberation in-volving the third umpire, Stokes was given out,

much to the anger of En-gland captain Eoin Mor-gan, who tried to take the matter up with opposing skipper Steven Smith.

Batsmen are allowed to protect themselves but they must not, under the Laws of Cricket, “wilful-ly” obstruct the field.

Ahmed is a family friend of mine, a few days back he discussed his upcom-ing movie Meeruthiya Gangsters and insisted that I sing a song for it.” “Priyanka further con-vinced me to utilise this opportunity for trying my hand in singing. On Sunday we recorded this melodious track and I really enjoyed it. I hope listeners and fans will appreciate my effort as they have all this while supported me whenever I am playing the game for my country,” he added. Meeruthiya Gangsters is Zeishan Quadri’s direc-torial debut and is set to be released along with Kangana Ranaut-Imran Khan starrer ‘Katti Batti’ on September 18.

Dahod tense after authorities raze wall of Muslim cemetery

companied by those from the district administration and police, arrived at the Godhra road to bulldoze a green boundary wall lead-ing to the cemetery. The wall, authorities said, was pulled down as per a 2010 order of the Gujarat High Court. This came after a long-drawn legal battle with those in-charge of the cemetery which went

in favour of the authori-ties. District Collector M A Gandhi said, “The wall was an encroachment and in contravention of the Supreme Court verdict on conservation of water bodies as it also blocked the passage to the Chhab Talav, the historical wa-ter reservoir of Dahod. In 2008, the cemetery was informed that a road was

proposed in the area to ease traffic. They went to court, challenging that the land belonged to them. Around three months ago, they extended their orig-inal boundary wall and covered the lake, despite the 2010 HC verdict di-recting the municipality to measure the land of the cemetery and construct a road in public interest.”

The DNA report of the bones retrieved from the Raigad forest has estab-lished that they belonged to Indrani Mukerjea’s “female child“, burying her claims of her daugh-ter, Sheena Bora, being in the US. The Foren-sic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Kalina has also confirmed that Mikhail Bora is Indrani’s son. Coming as it does within days of the digital match-ing of the skull found in Raigad with Sheena’s facial image, the police and the prosecution will no longer need to depend solely on circumstantial evidence and witness statements to build their

case against Indrani, said legal experts. The scien-tific evidence buttresses their case, they added. Forensic scientists said the DNA extracted from the femur (thigh bone) of the skeletal remains showed a 100% match with that of Indrani’s DNA. “It is proved be-yond doubt now that the person, whose remains were found in Raigad, was Indrani’s biological child. As many as 15 of the 16 genetic markers have matched in this case. The 16th marker, which determines the gender of an in dividual, established that the re-mains were of a female,“ a fo rensic expert said.
