they were an unlikely pair. C. s. Lewis:

oxford don, middle-aged bachelor, scholar,

writer, and popular theologian. Joy Davidman: a

Jewish woman from the Bronx, somewhat brash

ex-communist, divorcée, poet and novelist. yet

theirs would become a relationship marked by

intellectual vitality, enthusiastic camaraderie,

Lyle Dorsett’s classic biography of Joy Davidman

offers a fresh look at the life of the woman who

became Mrs. Lewis and on the marriage of two

remarkable people. And God Came In chronicles

God’s hand on their lives apart and their life

together, a compelling account of faith and love.

Many people have wondered over the years about

what it was in my mother’s personality that so

attracted my stepfather, C. S. Lewis. Here in this

thorough and well-presented biography, one can

find the answers. Lyle Dorsett has investigated my

mother’s background and her academic career and

presents an accurate and dispassionate portrayal

of this remarkable lady. So much has been written

about Jack (C. S. Lewis) that people tend to

overlook the staggering intellect and sharpness

of mind of the lady he chose to be his wife. This

valuable book redresses that situation.

J. I. Packer

One of the most important theologians of the modern era, J. I. Packer sets out

his beliefs about the authority of Scripture and the principles that should be

applied when interpreting it. He addresses important topics such as responding to

present-day views of Scripture, upholding the unity of the Bible, and addressing

challenges in biblical interpretation. Pastoral leaders and those looking to engage

more deeply with God’s Word will appreciate the writings of this man whose

practical wisdom and shrewd observations reinforce his significance in christian

thought and apologetics.

Men spoke from God, being borne along by the Holy Spirit. Their word was and

is the word of God, because of its divine origin. It is so before ever God uses it to

communicate to us today. And because it is God’s own word, it is universal in its

relevance, even though it is particular in its form. The Bible is a set of particular

writings from the ancient world just as Jesus Christ is a particular Jew of the first

century A.D. But just as Jesus Christ is God’s Son and Saviour for the world, so

Holy Scripture is God’s word And wisdom for the world. In this particular reality

there is the universality of God. Because the Bible is the Word of God, it is utterly

trustworthy and utterly authoritative for our lives—not just relatively so, as being

the best source we have, but absolutely so, as being God’s pure word of address

to all mankind which stands for all eternity.

Charles spurgeoN

Charles spurgeon wrote these classic, one-page daily devotions to be read each morning and evening to encourage his fellow believers. over one hundred years later, spurgeon’s devotions continue to

encourage Christians with the message of god’s love. each meditation is founded on a single verse of scripture, inspiring and exhorting readers to trust in god’s care for people and to respond to that love with ever deeper service. with attractive, easy-to-read typesetting, this edition features Bible verses in a modern translation and adapts spurgeon’s beautiful but sometimes difficult nineteenth-century prose for today’s reader.

Special Features:

• Uses the New International Version and gently adapts Spurgeon’s language for the modern reader

• Each day’s devotions are attractively presented on facing pages

• 732 devotions—one for every morning and evening of the year—are drawn from every book of the Bible

• A topical index helps readers discover Spurgeon’s thoughts on various topics important to Christian life

• An index of texts helps readers find what Spurgeon had to say about a particular Bible verse

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834–1892) is one of the most beloved preachers in the history of the english-speaking world. as a celebrated Baptist preacher, he served for thirty years at the metropolitan tabernacle in london, which seated six thousand people. It is estimated that early in his career, his sermons sold twenty-five thousand copies per week and that throughout his lifetime, he preached to ten million people. his collected sermons during his ministry with the New park street Church and the metropolitan tabernacle fill sixty-three volumes. with influence reaching across the globe in his day, spurgeon’s wisdom is still alive over a hundred years after his death through the legacy of his writings.

“A fresh approach to setting the New Testament and early Christianity in context”

“Warren Carter has done a service to biblical studies. It is easy to pass over the period covered by these seven events because it is difficult to find a text that does it justice. No longer will that deficiency hinder study from the death of alexander to the writing and closing of the New Testament canon. Carter’s approach is different and refreshing, and he is in control of a wide range of materials. If this study had been available when I was teaching New Testament, it would have been a must-read for my students. professors, students, and pastors alike will benefit from this work, which is well conceived, well designed, well researched, and well written.” —William R. Herzog II, andover Newton Theological School

“Warren Carter is a skilled writer. Organized around seven key events and their effects, this book provides a fresh approach to setting the New Testament and early Christianity in context. Though scholars lack unanimity on some debated matters that introductions must treat, readers will find the book enjoyable, thought provoking, and full of fascinating information and perspectives.” —Craig Keener, asbury Theological Seminary

“Brilliantly conceived and accessibly written. Carter’s seven events serve as doors through which to enter into and explore the cultural complexities of the early church. This book will be an excellent secondary text for courses on New Testament introduction, but it should also find its way into the hands of any reader interested in the sociocultural context of early Christianity.” —David A. deSilva, ashland Theological Seminary

“how did rank-and-file Jesus followers negotiate the complex cultural nettle—a right admixture of Greek, Roman, and Jewish worlds—into which the early Jesus movement was birthed? In this slender yet substantive volume, seasoned scholar and accomplished author Warren Carter turns his learned attention to this fascinating question. From a ‘people’s history perspective,’ Carter explores seven salient events that enable student and teacher alike to understand better the social milieu in which nascent Christianity ‘lived and moved and had its being.’ For those who have been searching for a succinct, authoritative ‘New Testament history,’ look no further. Take up and read!” —Todd D. Still, Truett Seminary, Baylor University

Warren Carter (phd, princeton Theological Seminary) is professor of New Testament at Brite divinity School, Texas Christian University, and the author of many books.

“A must-read for all who are interested in the truly big questions of our day”

“This is vintage Keener—exhaustive research, expert command of and thoughtful interaction with both ancient and modern sources, impeccable analyses of all sides of the argument, and deft handling of the controversial issues—plus some! it will undoubtedly henceforth be the first stop for all serious researchers on this topic.”

—Amos Yong, Regent University School of Divinity

“This monumental study combines historical inquiry into late antiquity, philosophical and existential criticism of antisupernaturalism and the legacy of David Hume’s epistemological skepticism, and ethnographic study of the phenomenon of the miraculous throughout the Majority World. The result is a book that is important not only for the historical study of Jesus and the New Testament but also for our understanding of our contemporary world beyond the boundaries of our social location and its worldview.”

—David A. deSilva, Ashland Theological Seminary

“craig Keener has written arguably the best book ever on the subject of miracles. He places the miracles of Jesus and his followers in a full and rich context that includes philosophy, history, theology, exegesis, comparative religion, cultural anthropology, and firsthand observation and testimony. There is nothing like it. Keener’s monumental work shifts the burden of proof heavily onto skeptics. This book is a must-read for all who are interested in the truly big questions of our day.”

—Craig A. Evans, Acadia Divinity College

“in an age of a global church, the time has come for Bible scholarship to be enriched by considering the way christians read and understand scripture in non-Western countries and cultures. in Miracles, craig Keener offers an invaluable example of how that enrichment can take place through hard scholarly work and a passion for integrity. He gives us an exhaustive wealth of historical understanding, anthropological richness, and missiological savvy.”

Two-volume set–New Testament

Most modern prejudice against biblical miracle reports depends on David Hume’s

argument that uniform human experience precludes miracles. Yet current research shows that human experience is far from uniform. in fact, hundreds of millions of people today claim to have experienced miracles. in this wide-ranging and meticulously researched study, craig Keener argues that it is time to rethink Hume’s argument in light of the contemporary evidence available to us.

“seldom does a book take one’s breath away, but Keener’s magisterial Miracles is such a book. it is an extremely sophisticated, completely thorough treatment of its subject matter, and, in my opinion, it is now the best text available on the topic. The uniqueness of Keener’s treatment lies in his location of the biblical miracles in the trajectory of ongoing, documented miracles in the name of Jesus and his kingdom throughout church history, up to and including the present. From now on, no one who deals with the credibility of biblical miracles can do so responsibly without interacting with this book.”

— J. P. Moreland, Talbot School of Theology, Biola University

“From the very beginning of the modern approach to the Gospels, the question of miracles brought controversy. Over the last few centuries, most historical-critical scholars have dismissed them out of hand. However, in recent years, the tide has turned for a growing number of Gospel scholars. it is within this context that craig Keener’s new two-volume work can be fully appreciated. Those familiar with Keener’s previous work will not be surprised by the remarkable level of scholarship in these volumes. The depth and breadth of research is stunning. The interdisciplinary synthesis is as careful as it is brilliant. The arguments are evenhanded and nuanced. in short, this work takes scholarship on miracles to a new level of sophistication and depth. a truly amazing set of books.”

— Paul Rhodes Eddy, Bethel University

Craig S. Keener (PhD, Duke University) is professor of New Testament at asbury Theological seminary. He is the author of many books, including The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament, The Historical Jesus of the Gospels, Gift and Giver, and commentaries on Matthew, John, romans, 1–2 corinthians, and revelation.

“this is a book that could transform many people’s reading of the gospels. Jonathan Pennington has a wide knowledge of the specialist literature, and he skillfully distills what matters most for the task of reading the gospels wisely. he is especially concerned that we read the gospels in ways that are appropriate to the sort of texts they are. What comes across is a powerful sense that the gospels are not only historical but also life-changing.” —Richard Bauckham, University of St. Andrews; Ridley Hall, Cambridge

“Reading the gospels can be tricky, but it is important to read them with a full appreciation of their theology. Jonathan Pennington’s study helps you get there—and get there well, as well as wisely.” —Darrell Bock, Dallas Theological Seminary

“Many books on the gospels slog through source criticism, form criticism, and redaction criticism—important topics to be sure. how refreshing it is, however, to find a book with a new approach, one that reads the gospels as literature and sees their importance theologically. this book is like a cool drink of water in what is too often the desert of gospel studies. While i don’t agree with every-thing Pennington says, his arguments must be reckoned with, and they further the conversation in productive and stimulating ways. i believe this is the best introductory book on the gospels. Both students and professors will find it to be invaluable.” —Thomas R. Schreiner, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

“Few academic enterprises of recent generations have been as chaotic and contradictory as the study of Jesus and the gospels. Bultmann, Bornkamm, Borg, Burridge, Blomberg, Bauckham—and those are just some Bs—whom to believe? this learned yet lively volume attempts to transcend past miscues and cash in on lasting insights going back to patristic times. Pennington shows how the fourfold canonical gospel ought to be read: as the proper entrée to becoming Jesus’s disciple for the sake of loving god by the work of the Spirit. Few works explain more.” —Robert W. Yarbrough, Covenant Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri

“Our work at Habitat is both a privilege and a blessing as we witness God’s presence at work in the lives of our Habitat families, volunteers and sponsoring partners. The heartfelt effort and dedication that goes into building each home is living testimony to Christ’s grace and love at work in our community.”

— Kathy Forzley and Cheryl Molhoek, Faith Relations

Habitat for Humanity of Kent County Annual Report 2007

“Following a recent home dedication, I found myself reflecting about what a great time it is to be working at Habitat for Humanity of Kent County. There is always such great excitement in the air when people stop for a moment to consider the beauty of what just happened and what is yet to come!”

—Ivor Thomas, Director of Operations

“Knowing that the work of Habitat improves the chances for families of all sizes and situations to have a better and more productive future drew me to Habitat. Through my work, I have a sense of being a part of something much bigger than my own neighborhood and community, knowing that we are among the many affiliates working to end substandard housing; and even helping in crisis situations throughout the world. The global aspect means a great deal to me. It’s a way of being connected to both basic needs and yet the entire world.”

—Colleen Mahon-VanDoren, Volunteer Coordinator

“After seven years with Habitat for Humanity of Kent County, I am constantly amazed by the generosity of our community—especially when considering the state of Michigan’s economy. People here make it happen. They give of their time, resources, and talents, and it reinforces in my mind what a great community we live in. I am so lucky to work with and meet such great and generous people every day.”

—Roger Peterman, Land and Resource Development Manager

Annual Report 2007 Habitat for Humanity of Kent County

“I gain the greatest fulfillment working with volunteers, empowering them by teaching them something they never thought they could do. And then, to see the excitement in their eyes at the end of the day when they realize just how much we have accomplished—it is truly amazing. …There is not a pair of hands that can’t be helpful on a Habitat job site. We have a job for everyone.”

—Dave Zimmerman, Site Supervisor

“I love my job as Director of ReStore because I can help raise the unrestricted funds that our affiliate needs to help families, and also provide building materials for those that may not be able to afford to upgrade or repair their homes otherwise.”

—Tom Hyde, Habitat ReStore Director

“I love my job as Habitat’s Homeownership Coordinator because of all the families I am able to meet and get to know. It is such a blessing to work with this diverse group of families—some with different languages and cultures…and food! Little did I know when I started an internship here 9 years ago, that I would grow to love this agency and its mission, and all the families we serve.”

—Libby Kuipers, Homeownership Coordinator

“Working at Habitat is completely engaging and stretches my skills every day. We have built our organization over the past several years in exciting ways: LEED Certification of Habitat houses, Educational Partnerships with building students, and increased support and interest from donors. We have also built the number of people we reach with our services each year. What a satisfying way to spend the day.”

In this spirit and in keeping with our

collaborative successes to date, we are

asking the seven financial institutions

represented on our Board—and

others throughout our community—

to join us for a commemorative Bank

Build for Habitat’s 25th Anniversary.

This campaign will recognize the

collaborative achievement of financial institutions

working with Habitat on affordable housing, while at the

same time shine a light on the community need for

affordable housing.

We also hope to take care of some internal housekeeping

—namely, after 10 years in our current location, we’re

bursting at the seams and need to investigate new or

expanded headquarters.

It is with this energy we move forward, knowing that our

efforts have provided a home—and hope—to hundreds in

our community. We are extremely excited to have the

backing of community leaders like Steelcase and Spartan

Stores stepping up to assist us. Such support—combined

with that of like-minded businesses, individual donors and

volunteers like yourself—are the true fabric of our success.

On this note, we thank you for all you have done, and we

hope you will continue to be a part of our efforts to

eradicate substandard housing in our community.

Best wishes for a bright new year,

By the end of the month, Spartan had raised more than $50,000. In January, 2007, Spartan

representatives from the board room to the loading docks joined the Barreras to continue work on

their new home. Over the course of the coming months, Spartan employees will work side by side

with Dave and Norma to complete their home.

Craig Sturken, Chairman, President and CEO of Spartan Stores, notes: “Spartan Stores is thrilled to be

working with Habitat and the community to address the need for affordable housing. We recognize

the importance of corporate leadership, fully understanding the power of smaller contributions from

generous individuals. Our financial backing—along with our Spartan employees volunteering on the

job site—builds not only a home—but hope—for the Barreras. This temporary boost—along with

their zero percent interest mortgage—is what makes dreams come true.”

On behalf of Habitat and the Barreras—thank you Spartan for stepping up.

It is a gratifying to see a vacant lot and foundation

become a home through the efforts of the Barrera family

and our volunteers. The Barrera family shares the same

values as Spartan Stores’ employees: hard work, dedication, and community service. There is something really fulfilling in building a home together for a hardworking West Michigan

family, and Spartan Stores is privileged to be able to do this.

A SPECIAL THANKS TO:

All those who contribute money, materials, skilled labor, and volunteer hours to keep our Operating Expenses to

the bare minimum. Without the generous contributions of supporters such as Universal Forest Products—who

donated trusses for 35 homes—we could not ensure that $.84 on every dollar goes directly to home construction

and homeowner programs.

“Padnos chose to partner with Habitat for Humanity because truthfully, it justseemed like a good fit. We wanted to celebrate our 100th anniversary by giving back to the communities who have been such a vital part of our success. We formed acommittee to review a number of organizations to partner with. A lot of people don’trealize recycling plays a big roll in construction materials, so for starters, Habitat was a good match. But more importantly, we connected with Habitat’s values; theircommitment to strengthening families and neighborhoods through partnership, house building, and affordable ownership. Habitat’s ReStore also is committed torecycling and deconstruction services.

My grandparents’ came to this country from Russia and Poland and founded thecompany in 1905. They were able to achieve the “American Dream” through hardwork, treating people fairly, and remaining committed to recycling valuable resources. At Padnos, our commitment to recycling extends to our family of employees andmaking sure we never squander their human potential.

By providing the funds and volunteer labor to build the Padnos Centennial House, employees from the board room to the loading dock witnessed the importance ofbelieving in their fellow man, supporting their community and environment, andutilizing their talents and resources to make West Michigan a better place to live.

We didn’t realize the full potential of our partnership with Habitat when this started. We truly went on gut instinct. But as we grew to understand Habitat’s operation andmission more intimately, we have discovered additional partnership opportunities. For example, we recently established a relationship with Nu-Wool Corporation toprovide recycled newspaper for Habitat home insulation…

…and this is just the beginning.”

• The WoodSave Heat treatment System has been approved for use

under the global ISPM-15 program for wood packaging.

• The programmable controls are equally capable of monitoring core

probe based charges, or more detailed time/temperature schedules

such as Canada’s PI-07.

• The system is designed to be as energy efficient

as possible. Modulating elements and variable

frequency drives on the fans are designed to

conserve energy while maximizing productivity

and minimizing treatment times.

• Portability also increases efficiency as the unit

can be used in your company’s loading dock area

minimizing costly extra product movement.

• Non permanent installation means no increased

taxes, permits or leasehold improvements are

required for your location.

• Portability affords the potential for multi site

usage. (Consult a WoodSave representative for

further details)

• Robust internal construction and custom made components set the

highest quality standard.

• Recent studies and research show that the uncontrolled movement

of firewood poses the largest threat to the spread of invasive pests

domestically. Numerous states already provide rigid constraints

where firewood is concerned.

• The WoodSave Heat Treatment System has been tested and

approved in the State of Michigan by the USDA to treat firewood.

• Similar to pallets and wood packaging, the firewood is core probed

and monitored for a specific treatment length as prescribed by

government authorities.

• Our units are available for purchase, lease or rental and we also

have a line of safe pest free certified firewood available.

Rendering of chamber capacities

During developmental stages of the WoodSave Heat Treatment Chamber,

it was determined that the most efficient method of thermal heat transfer

of energy to air was accomplished by means of an electric heat source.

The use of electric energy also supports true mobility for the WoodSave

Heat Treatment Chamber with the aid of a generator.

WoodSave was born from a collaborative effort by a group that could

pool their knowledge of wood pallets, wood pallet equipment, forestry

and lumber industries to develop and manufacture an effective and

efficient heat treatment system tailored to specific industry needs.

• The WoodSave system uses the most efficient heat source needing

no outside air make up. There is no open flame and therefore no

internal by-products of combustion are generated. The system

maximizes the transfer of heat energy to air and subsequently to

wood and only requires a fraction of the BTU’s associated with most

heat treatment units currently marketed. This results in a more

efficient system, a small carbon footprint and low cost operations

• The single most advanced control system in the industry ensures

compliance with all international and industry regulations. The control

system can be custom tailored to your specific needs and product

types for foolproof operations and is fully programmable to allow for

future changes in treatment protocol.

• Engineered and constructed to meet the demands of our tough

environment. Wood core probes are mounted using “quick detach”

devices on retractable “pig tails” for ease of placement and to facilitate

location changes for variance in product. This is also a fail safe

ensuring the probes will not be compromised against an operator

neglecting to remove the probe from the product before unloading.

• Safety is paramount in our design. From the lack of internal

combustion emissions to pre programmed computer controls and

manual overrides the WoodSave system will meet the strictest of

safety protocols. All electronics are UL, CE and CSA approved.

GLOBAL RESPONSIBILITY

Globalization has brought a massive threat to our forest resources and significant challenges to the forest products industries. One of the greatest issues we face today is the movement of invasive insects within Wood Packaging

Material (WPM), pallets, crates, containers, lumber, firewood and other wood products.

The WoodSave Mobile Heat Treatment System provides efficient and effective treatment for wood products literally at your doorstep. Fully portable—all units are Department of Transportation (DOT) approved—the system allows wood product users the local capability to pre- or post-treat new wood, providing a responsible “low cost”

method of meeting regulatory requirements.

Van Morrison

Van Morrison has a great deal to say to the modern world both in his music and his message that has been missed in the deluge of pop-culture. He is the ultimate cross-over artist, which makes it difficult for the consumer market needing quick and easing categories. However, even a quick survey of his musical catalog will make it abundantly clear that he has elevated the theme of “Soul” to one pointing to the ultimate purpose behind his work.

“A paragon of blue-eyed soul, Van Morrison has been following his muse for four decades. His travels have led him down pathways where he has explored soul, jazz, blues, rhythm & blues, rock and roll, Celtic folk, pop balladry and more, forging a distinctive amalgam that has Morrison’s passionate self-expression at its core. With a minimum of hype or fanfare, working with a craftsman’s discipline and an artist/mystic’s creativity, Morrison has steadily amassed one of the great bodies of recorded work in the 20th century. His discography numbers roughly forty albums, among them the deeply poetic song cycle Astral Weeks, the warm, pop-soul classic Moondance and such spiritually-minded later works as the ambitious double-disc set Hymns to the Silence. At one extreme, Morrison has made raw, angry blues-rock with the British invasion-era group Them. At the other, he has produced some of the most transcendent, even-toned soul music of the modern era.…” — from his introduction to the Rock ’n Roll Hall of Fame

Morrison struck out on his own in 1967, quickly launching himself with the evocative Brown Eyed Girl. Back-to-back album releases in the early 1970’s established Morrison as a potent singer, songwriter, band leader and visionary. Although he proved capable of tapping into the singles market with hooky R&B pop fare such as Domino, Wild Night and Wavelength, Morrison’s sweet spot has been album-length meditations filled with (and about) soul. His soulful delivery, mystical world view and gift for marrying the casual, intimate panoramas of jazz with the succinct, soulful impact of R&B makes him an icon of individuality in world of popular music.

Over the ensuing decades, his career has been a model of artistic consistency and devotion. Heedless of trends and immune to fashion, Morrison has never bowed to commercial

demands and always created his music with an almost defiant purity of intent. More recently, Morrison has returned to his R&B roots without forsaking the ongoing quest for spiritual enlightenment. An obvious influence on fellow musicians ranging from Bruce Springsteen and Bob Seger to Sinead O’Connor and U2, Morrison remains a beacon of artistic integrity, soulful conviction and musical excellence.

Mark VandenBerge

Grand Rapids-native and East coast sojourner, Mark VandenBerge is a vocal artist of incredible range, musical style and delivery. From the classical stage of solos at the opera to symphony/oratorio and then to the pubs as an Irish balladeer and ranging again over to rock and R&B, Mark has made a significant mark on the local scene In addition, he had an extensive earlier career experience with national opera groups in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere. He has been showcased in recent appearances with Todd Rundgren, singing backup with him last year in Muskegon and the Grand Rapids Symphony, as a principal soloist with the Final Fantasy video presentation. Other notable appearances on stage with have occurred with Kenny Rogers, Placido Domingo and other opera luminaries.

In bringing Van Morrison to the stage in this way, Mark is harnessing his musical talents to present Morrison in song and displaying a rare artistic vision, by scoring to orchestral arrangements, more than a dozen of his iconic tunes in a way never before heard. Mark believes Van Morrison is one of the greatest living musical artists; however, he has been more obscured in recent decades because of his dedication to a mix of genres and his intellectual depth of his writing begs for the more reflective listener. The symphonic context of this concert is the perfect treatment for giving music listeners a chance to see Van in an elevated light. The prolific skills of the orchestra arranger, Ed Clifford—who also plays flute for the Grand Rapids Symphony—will bring the perfect enhancements to the great songs so many have come to recognize and love.
