Roderick. K. West ’86 received the Allen J. Ellender Award as the 2016 Alumnus of the Year in March at the New Orleans Marriott. Rod was joined by his wife Madeline, their daughter Simone and members of his extended family. Presenting Rod’s award was John Devlin, President of Brother Martin, and Judge Bob Burns ’62 SA, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

In celebration of this prestigious honor, Rod, along with previous recipients of the Ellender Award, attended other events during the weekend including a gentlemen’s breakfast, Mass celebrated in the James B. Branton Chapel by Archbishop Gregory Aymond ’67 CJ and a cocktail reception. Special guests included Bro. Mark Hilton, Provincial Superior of the United States Province, Bro. Ivy Leblanc, Bro. Francis David and Coach Emile “Chubby” Marks ’54 SA. Among the alumni in attendance were members of the class of 1986.

Rod is the executive vice president and chief administrative officer for Entergy. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame where he lettered three years and was a member of the 1988 National Championship football team. He received his Juris Doctor from the Tulane University School of Law in 1993 and his MBA from Tulane University in 2005. Rod remains close to Brother Martin having served on the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni Board of Directors, guest judge at the Crusader Cook-off, Crimson & Gold

Network speaker and he is an annual supporter of the Celebration of the Crest. While at Brother Martin, he was a Golden Crusader and a James B. Branton Award recipient.

The Marriott Convention Center hosted the 25th annual Brother More Schaefer Faculty Award Lunch in February. Jill A. Gomez received The Brother More Schaefer Faculty Award. Jill earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education in 1990 and a Masters of Education in Counselor Education with a concentration in school and human services counseling in 1997, both at the University of New Orleans. In her nineteenth year at Brother Martin High School, she has chaired the Guidance Department for twelve years. Jill holds

a national certification and state license in counseling, as well as, certification as a counselor supervisor. Beyond the counseling office, Jill has served as National Honor Society moderator and Standardized Test Preparation Coordinator. This past year, she was appointed Formation Director where she coordinates a number of programs designed to implement strategies that help every student find academic success and obtain personal growth.

David Pecot ’76 received the Founders

Medal for his continuing support of Brother Martin High School. He is an Alumni Board member, Fishing Rodeo Committee member and is assistant coach of the Brother Martin 8th grade baseball team. David is a fixture at school events and remains active in our community.

Also recognized were 30 year faculty members, Lyn Greco and David Rhodes. Those faculty members recognized for 20 years of service were Bill Gallagher ’71, Terry Necaise and Stephen Tucker.

David Falati teaches an elective “Street Law” course to seniors interested in the judiciary system and the law. The following alumni served as guest speakers.

Nolan Lambert ’79, Chief Deputy City Attorney for the City of New Orleans, and a few of his colleagues spoke to the class. A NOPD detective, two other city attorneys and an FBI agent educated the class on underage drinking, criminal statutes and other facets of the legal process. The session ended with a round of “Jeopardy Law”.

Bob Masson ’63 CJ, a retired Jefferson Parish Sergeant, spoke to the class about cases he investigated in the ’70s and early ’80s. He educated the class on procedures of issuing search and arrest warrants, investigating crime scenes and preparing for trial. Bob ended with his personal involvement in the Kenner plane crash in 1982.

Sean Cursain ’85, a Jefferson Parish Sheriff ’s Office Detective, and his trusty canine partner visited. Sean advised students of the dangers of drug use, the consequences of poor decisions and shared stories about his experience in law enforcement.

Judge Joe Landry ’74, Judge at Municipal Court City of New Orleans, spoke to the class about gun laws, sexual misconduct, drug and alcohol ordinances and vehicular crimes and responsibilities.

Ben Lambert ’03 and Christopher Couch ’92, attorneys at Couch Conville & Blitt, informed the class how to make sound financial decisions and the consequences of bad financial decisions.

Mike Fulham ’87, a local law enforcement agent, told stories of personal encounters with criminals and the consequences of criminal acts. He warned students of the dangers on making poor decisions and encouraged them to think before they act.

Judge Steven Jupiter ’86, New Orleans Traffic Court Judge, spoke about court procedure, violations and consequences and gave advice.

Grady Hurley ’72, a lawyer and senior partner with Jones Walker, presented the students with a possible question from the Law Exam that he grades. Students were asked to evaluate a possible tort case scenario to determine how tort law is applied in Louisiana.

Alumni Speak to “Street Law” Class

The 2015 “Celebration of the Crest”- Brother Martin Extravaganza, sponsored by the Parents Club, was held on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at the New Orleans Marriott Hotel on Canal Street. There were over 850 Crusader friends who partied in grand style, complete with an ice carving of the school crest, all to the benefit of the Brother Martin student body. Parents, friends, alumni of St. Aloysius, Cor Jesu, and Brother Martin, as well as faculty and staff enjoyed an evening of great food and drink, music, and a selection of almost 300 silent and verbal auction items at one of the premiere hotels in New Orleans.

“It was truly a great night for Brother Martin and everyone associated with the school,” said Development Director Tommy Mitchell ’79. “There is nothing more gratifying than to see our alumni, parents, and friends come together as a family and enjoy a great evening in a wonderful setting for the benefit of our young men. I really believe this was one of the best auctions that we have ever had, not only in terms of attendance and financially, but from the community building aspect.”

Crusader Jazz Band members directed by Chris Bailey ’86 led off the evening at a memorable Patron Party and The Benchwarmers provided the entertainment in the Grand Ballroom for the main event. “Our Patron Party has gotten larger each year and it has become one of the high points of the night. The Jazz Band adds to what is already a great atmosphere”, commented Mr. Mitchell.

Chaircouple Mia and Scott Corrente ’83 along with Co-Chaircouples Jodi and Lindsey Williams ’83 and Missy and Mark Hildreth galvanized a huge contingent of parent and alumni volunteers to insure the most successful auction in the over 30-year history of the event. A large number of businesses and individuals served as sponsors giving the event a solid start before the doors opened.

Holiday Home TourHoliday Home Tour

On Saturday, December 5th, the Ladies of the Shield hosted their 9th annual Holiday Home Tour. This year’s event featured four homes in the Metairie – Bridgedale neighborhood. Proceeds from the home tour are dedicated to the Brother Jean Sobert, S.C. Student Activities Endowment at Brother Martin.The Patron Party was hosted at the home of Lisa and Sal Brocato III ’88 (Dominic ’17). The other homes on tour were Nancy and Joey O’Connor, Jr., (Joseph III ’85, Darrin ’89, Christopher Flynn ’17, Andrew Flynn ’19, and Ryan O’Connor ’19), Kara and Troy Pigeon (Edwin ’16), and Lainie & Patrick Stant ’87 (Jason ’18). The holiday boutique was held at Green Acres Country Club.

Spring SocialThe Ladies of the Shield celebrated 10 years with a complimentary spring social at the beautiful home of Chad and Danielle Guidry (Alex ’18). There was also the Dream Vacation Raffle won by Paul Centanni ’53 SA and the Sader Surprise Raffle, which included Saints and Pelicans tickets along with signed balls by Sean Payton and Anthony Davis.

A record crowd attended the annual “Brother Martin Day at the Races” at the New Orleans Fair Grounds in February. Patrons were treated to a private party in the Black Gold Room with a balcony to view the races, private betting windows, a lunch buffet and beverages. Lucky winners of the “Winners Circle” raffle participated in a Race Trophy Presentation and a hefty 50/50 prize was awarded.

The Brother Martin Wrestling community gathered on December 23rd for the Trey Culotta Invitational and Wrestling Reunion. Alumni wrestlers who have gone on to wrestle in college were introduced before the finals. The Crusaders won the tournament for the fifth consecutive year as the defeated teams from the state and region. After the tournament, alumni and friends enjoyed food and drinks at The Bayou Beer Garden in Mid-City.

Crimson Shield Social

The 2016 Brother Martin Lacrosse season kicked- off on January 9th, at Farley Field with the annual Alumni/Varsity Game. Twenty alumni played against the Varsity as Donald Davis ’12 led the Alumni with two goals. However, the Varsity Team won 9-5 to avenge last year’s overtime loss. After, members of the Lacrosse community enjoyed a “Jambalaya Feast.”

The Basketball Letterman Reunion and Alumni Tournament took place on Saturday, December 19th in the Conlin Gym. “Injured Reserved” won the championship by finishing undefeated in the round-robin tournament. Players then competed in the 3-point contest and John Lally ’92 was crowned champion. The 2nd annual Marty Gras Concert to benefit the Marty Hurley Endowment moved to Rock ‘n Bowl in March. Former Hurley students, local artists, their friends and The Brother Martin Drumline and Stage Band entertained the crowd. Robbie Dauterive ’84, Arthur Hardy and Keith Spera ’85 emceed and a Silent Auction helped raise funds for the cause. Josh Olivier ’13 created a “mentor tree” of Mr. Hurley’s teachers that was given to VIP guest and sold to the general public.

The second annual Alumni Dance revisited the 1970s as members of the Brother Martin community dressed in ’70s attire and gathered in The Benson Mall for a night of merriment. The Brother Martin Class of 1973 presented a check to President John Devlin and Assistant to President for

Alumni and Development Tommy Mitchell ’79 for $60,000 for the “Johnny LeBourgeois ’73 Crusader Spirit

Scholarship”. Prior to the presentation, Joe Exnicios ’73 addressed the Brother Martin community about the fully endowed scholarship and Johnny LeBourgeois ’73. Johnny exemplifies the “Crusader Spirit” and carries out the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart along with his 1973 classmates. According to his fellow classmates, he has kept his class together for the past 42 years continuing the tradition of brotherhood. The scholarship helps ensure that each year a deserving student will receive an opportunity to be educated at Brother Martin High School. Afterward, guests were treated to a social at the home of 2014 Alumnus of the Year Joe Exnicios ’73.

2nd Quarter Senior LunchThe Alumni Association and Student Services hosted the 2nd Quarter Senior Lunch in the Bro. Mark Thornton Terrace. Seniors enjoyed brisket, pulled pork and mac’n cheese from Saucy’s (4200 Magazine St.). Volunteer senior moms provided dessert and served the meal to the Crusader seniors. Brother Martin Food Services provided salad and assistance with the event. Alumni Director Kenny Spellman ’84 reminded seniors about President John Devlin’s message at Ring Mass. Mr. Devlin told the seniors “Hope is a good thing”. Halfway through their senior year, the class was asked, “What have you done to maintain your hope and achieve your goals?”

Crimson & Gold Network Finance Professionals BreakfastMembers of the Crimson & Gold Network’s “Finance Professionals” group met for breakfast and business in March at Another Broken Egg Café in Lakeview. Agenda items included student presentation evaluation, Economics class presentation review, mentor projects and our current state economic challenges. The mission of the CGN Financial Professionals is to bring alumni together to expand their professional networks, discuss current topics in the finance industry and give back to the Brother Martin community by sharing their expertise. This group is not limited to financial professionals. It is open to all alumni interested in participating or in learning about the industry.

This past year, the NFL embarked on their 50th Super Bowl season. They celebrated various players, coaches and their high schools. 3,000 players and head coaches, and more than 2,000 high schools were recognized for their positive impact towards the game. The NFL has recognized Brother Martin High School as one of those schools. A commemorative Golden Football was bestowed to the school in honor of a football player or head coach who was on an active roster in a Super Bowl. Our football was given to us in honor of Eddie Robinson, Jr. ’88.

The Golden Football was presented to Brother Martin at an afternoon assembly in March in front of members of the Brother Martin Football program. Eddie

discussed his football career from Brother Martin to Alabama St. and the NFL. He encouraged students to strive for greatness both in academics and athletics. The assembly ended with a Q & A session.Upon graduation from Brother Martin, Eddie played for Alabama State as a linebacker. After graduating in 1992, he was drafted in the second round by the Houston Oilers. He played in the NFL for 11 years as a member of the Houston Oilers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans and the Buffalo Bills.

In 2000, he played in Super Bowl XXXIV with the Tennessee Titans. Currently, Eddie resides in Houston with his three children.

2016 Crusader Football Schedule

Brother Martin High School celebrated its 10th annual President’s Dinner at the Windsor Court Hotel. The evening began with a reception prior to the five course meal. President’s Dinner Committee member, Sal Brocato ’88 led the prayer before the meal and committee chair P. Lindsey Williams ’83, welcomed guests and introduced John Devlin, President of Brother Martin. Mr. Devlin thanked the President’s Dinner main sponsors – The Gootee Family - represented by Kathy and Ken Gootee ’70, Ben Gootee ’01 and Ryan and Sara Gootee. He also thanked chairman P. Lindsey Williams ’83 and his wife Jodi for initiating this annual event. He introduced those Brothers in attendance, Bro. Mark Hilton, Provincial of the United States Province, Bro. Ronald Hingle ’78, Councilor, Brother Ivy LeBlanc, Councilor, and Bro. Francis David, former Provincial of the New Orleans Province. Mr. Devlin reflected back to 2007 to highlight all of Brother Martin’s achievements since the first President’s Dinner - the completion of the Meyer Building and the Branton Chapel, courtyard improvements, addition of a main campus sign, the naming of the Alumni and Development Office for Brother Jean Sobert and the completion of Phase II. During Phase II, fundraising efforts surpassed $16 million dollars and the school’s endowment grew to $13 million. He continued as he highlighted the many athletic, extracurricular and academic achievements of the past 10 years - 10 state athletic championships, rising PSAT and ACT scores, our distinguished NJROTC unit, and the many excellent and superior ratings earned by our Crusader Band and Chorus. His closing remarks explained the re-visioning of Phase III of the Master Plan. Mr. Devlin then asked those who have attended every dinner for the last 10 years to stand and be acknowledged. Lakewood Golf Club hosted the 34th annual Brother Martin Golf Classic on April 15th. Threatening weather didn’t deter over 200 golfers from enjoying a day of golf, food, drinks and Crusader comraderies. The morning round featured a record 69 golfers who were treated to donuts, breakfast croissant sandwiches and beverages. The Class of ’74 Cooking Team prepared and served sausages and potato salad for lunch along with Brisbi’s white beans. Burgers from The Swamp Room, charbroiled oysters from Mato’s Oysters and served by Pigeon’s Caterers and jambalaya by Frank Viola ’67 SA and Conn Regan ’66 CJ kept the players going on the course. After, Johnny’s Seafood served boiled crawfish along with jambalaya from Cook me Somethin’ Mr. Team champions were recognized, prizes were given away and players with the “longest drive” and “closest to the hole” were rewarded. The event committee along with an army of volunteers ensured a successful event.

The 1996 Brother Martin State Baseball Champions reunited for their 20th anniversary in April. Teammates, family and friends gathered at The Bulldog-Mid City for a reception on Friday night. Some members of the team played in the alumni softball game on Saturday afternoon. Saturday evening the team was recognized before the Brother Martin vs. Holy Cross game at U.N.O. Members of the team were introduced and met with the current team before 1996 head coach Barry Hebert ’74 threw out the first pitch.

1996 State Champs Reunion

The Brother Martin Baseball community gathered for the annual reunion and softball game in April at Farley Field. Captain Stephen Carroll ’03 and the “gold team” defeated the “white team”9-5. This is Stephen’s 2nd consecutive victory as team captain. Dr. James “Argo” Meza ’66 SA threw out the first pitch. The game was dedicated to Emmanuel “Tookie” Spann ’84. Members of the Meza and Spann families attended the game. The Brother Martin 8th Grade Team took a photo with the team before they departed for the District Tournament, which they won. The 1996 State Championship Team was recognized on the 20th anniversary of their championship season. After the game, festivities continued at Lakeview Harbor where alumni, family and friends enjoyed burgers, jambalaya and drinks.

1957Kenneth Perret CJ has been re-elected as president of the Louisiana Good Roads and Transportation Association for 2016. He is a retired administrator with the Federal Highway Administration and the Louisiana

Department of Transportation and Development. He also serves as a commissioner for Baton Rouge’s Capital Area Transit System.

1967Danny Hare has retired from Procter & Gamble after 33 years. He worked as an Account Executive with several roles in both sales and management. He began his career working for 20 years with Clairol Beauty Care and Bristol Myers Medicines. Danny and his wife Susie now live in Fleming Island, FL and enjoy an active lifestyle traveling, doing home renovation projects and socializing with friends and neighbors.

Warde Manuel ’86 has been named athletic director at his alma mater, the University of Michigan. He has had a distinguished career in intercollegiate athletics that ranges from being a student-athlete to a director of athletics. He previously served as athletic director at the University of Connecticut and the University at Buffalo. Prior to his time at Buffalo, he was the assistant and associate director of athletics for the University of Michigan, where he oversaw that school’s football and men’s basketball programs

Warde was a high school All-American football player while at Brother Martin and played for the University of Michigan under its legendary coach, Bo Schembechler. In the course of working on a PhD in social work and psychology at Michigan, he earned a master’s degree in social work in 1993 and an MBA from Michigan’s Ross School of Business in April 2005. Warde and his wife, Chrislan, have a daughter, Emma, and a son, Evan.

Michael Gulotta ’98 of MoPho in New Orleans is a 2016 F&W Best New Chef. Mike serves Delta-inspired Vietnamese food in a casual restaurant that explores the seafood traditions around both Southeast Asia and the American South. He has worked at August and Marisol in New Orleans and has served in guest chef roles in Germany at Spielweg and in Liguria, Italy. He studied at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux.

Sleep Out for HomelessBusiness and community leaders in New Orleans slept out on the street in solidarity with homeless and at-risk youths in November. Dr. Sidney Fauria ’69 CJ, Joe Exnicios ’73, co-chair, Tony Melito ’76 and Judge Steven Jupiter ’86 spent a night on the sidewalk with nothing but a sleeping bag and a cardboard box. The Sleep Out raised funds and awareness, sending a clear message to homeless kids that we stand with them in their struggles and we celebrate their courage and resiliency, and support their promises and dreams.

Kevin Caparotta was recently elected president of the Louisiana American Choral Directors Association. At the 2015 National In-Service Conference of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME),

his work with the Brother Martin Chorus was recognized in a poster demonstrating how NAfME members empower creativity in their classrooms. Kevin frequently serves as keyboardist for national touring musicals, including shows such as Wicked, The Book of Mormon, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, The Addams Family, Shrek, West Side Story, Beauty and the Beast, Grease, Peter Pan, Evita, The Wiz, and many others. He is currently an on-call keyboard sub for the national tour of Jersey Boys, traveling to theaters across the country to perform onstage as keyboardist and vocalist in the Four Seasons band.

in Biology. He then moved on to Flinders University School of Medicine in Australia, where we received his doctorate. He came back to the states and completed his residency in pediatrics at Albany Medical center. He finished a fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at Louisiana State University Health Science Center-Tulane University. Alfonso served in the US Air Force, where he traveled to Costa Rica for Humanitarian Medical Readiness Deployment to provide primary care to infants and children. His passion for helping others can also be seen in his trip to Colombia for Operation Smile International. He now provides exceptional service as a Neonatologist at St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital (SJWH), leading their therapeutic hypothermia program. 2013Jalen Gray, Loyola (N.O.) junior point guard, was named to the Southern States Athletic Conference All-Academic team for this season, an accolade reserved for those student-athletes who have attained a 3.25 GPA or

higher. He is majoring in finance.

2014Will Clapp was named to USA Today’s Freshman All-America Team and to the 2015 Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America Team.

Josh Tapia, a sophomore majoring in Kinesiology at Briar Cliff University in Iowa, has been named a starter on the wrestling team.

In this issue, we set aside our trips down memory lane to discuss the crisis brewing in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA). Our guide will be Brother Martin principal Greg Rando (’77) who has been on the School Relations Committee (SRC) of the LHSAA since 2012 and reports to the state Catholic Schools Principals Association (CSPA) on athletic matters.

First, let’s recap what has happened to create the crisis.

At their annual meeting in January 2013, the state principals voted 206-119 to split the football playoffs into two divisions: “Non-Select” (public) and “Select” (all private schools and any public school that draws more than 25% of its enrollment from outside its attendance zone). Winnfield principal Jane Griffin, who spearheaded the legislation, said: “I certainly don’t want to hurt the LHSAA or our schools. This doesn’t take championships away from Select schools. It just makes my kids and other kids at public schools know they’ve got a chance. Every kid should believe they can be a champion. That can’t happen the way things are. Things are not fair and equitable. We’ll see what happens. If it doesn’t work, we can go back, and I’ll be leading the charge. But I think it will.”

So starting with the 2013 season, Brother Martin and eleven other 5A Select schools - including the entire Catholic League as well as John Curtis and Evangel, both playing above their enrollment levels - competed in “Division I” playoffs. In 2014, with “Select” redefined, Byrd and Scotlandville moved to the Non-Select division, leaving only 10 teams in the Division I playoffs. For 2015, Byrd and Scotlandville returned to Division I after another change in criteria to give 12 schools again with seven from the Catholic League.

After the 2013 vote, the School Relations Committee, composed of 15 principals from both public and private schools, tried to develop proposals that would repair the split and bring the schools back together for football. Greg recalls, “Recruitment was always the issue. The public schools were asking for a level playing field. They perceived the private schools as recruiting any kid they wanted from any place because they had the funds to do that. So the public school principals had a real concern that things were going on that were out of their control but that were in LHSAA’s control. But the LHSAA wasn’t doing enough to control it. That’s when the ball started rolling for the split playoffs. Their thinking was, ‘If the LHSAA leadership is not going to level the playing field, we’re going to change the structure.’”

The School Relations Committee submitted a proposal for the January 2016 principals meeting to reunite all 5A and 4A schools for the football playoffs but continue the split in 3A, 2A, and 1A. However, the first proposal voted on at the meeting, which came from Many High School principal Norman Booker, called for the split playoffs to be extended to boys’ and girls’ basketball, baseball, and softball in all classifications. When that passed by a margin of 182-120, the SRC’s proposal and several others dealing with playoffs were rendered moot.

Greg was disappointed but not surprised. “Six to eight months after the football split, I actually thought that the concept of Select and Non-Select was losing momentum. The SCR discussed other options and solutions that would hopefully take care of the real concerns around the state to avoid a split in other sports. The SRC was even trying to develop a plan to get principals interested in voting to go back to the original five classifications in football. At that time, I truly believed that a split in other sports was not a possibility.” Another reason for optimism was the hiring of a new commissioner, Eddie Bonine, in December 2014. Greg: “When Eddie came in, he did his very best to get us back to an association that was unified because he thought that was what he was hired to do. But he found out that was not the case. In some ways, he was at an unfair disadvantage. He learned that the thinking above I-10 was

a lot different from the thinking below I-10. He realized that the LHSAA office, the SRC, and the Executive Committee were not all working together with unification as a common goal.”

With some public school principals making no secret of the fact they will propose split playoffs across all sports in January 2017, private schools were forced to consider their options sooner rather than later. Greg was appointed to a subcommittee of the CSPA to develop options for the future. The committee came up with four scenarios. (1) Retain a lawyer to see if there were any loopholes in the vote that took place so it becomes null and void. (2) Hire a consultant to do a feasibility study on forming a separate private school association. (3) Develop a proposal to split the LHSAA into two divisions – private and public. (4) Wait and see what happens, particularly with the state legislature.

Greg attended a meeting of private school representatives in Baton Rouge February 29. As soon as he walked in the door, he had to sign a confidentiality agreement. Eventually, a news release revealed what was presented at the meeting. Paul Rainwater, who had been a member of Governor Bobby Jindal’s staff, had developed a plan to form a new athletic “cooperative” that any school, public or private, could join. A minimum of 60 members was required at $15,000 per school. However, the cooperative would sponsor only eight sports: football, basketball, baseball, and track for boys and volleyball, basketball, softball, and track for girls.

Concerned that many people assumed the Catholic schools were on board with the Rainwater proposal, the Bishops of Louisiana issued this statement March 23: “The Bishops of Louisiana have approved the formation of a task force to continue looking into all options when it comes to the future of Catholic high school athletics. The recent news reports are inaccurate as they state that a decision has been made. The Catholic school superintendents will convene the task force in the coming months and it will be comprised of members from each of the dioceses of the state. By no means does this mean the Catholic schools of Louisiana have closed the door on LHSAA membership, nor has there been a commitment to any one future plan. The task force will be working for what is in the best interest of the student-athletes in Catholic schools throughout the state. We must examine all options in order to make a wise decision.”

Commissioner Bonine hopes the legislature will solve LHSAA’s problem. Rep. Kirk Talbot (R – River Ridge) has submitted a bill that prohibits public and private schools that receive public funds from belonging to an athletic organization that splits its playoffs into separate divisions. The bill cleared the House committee March 23 but still has many hurdles to jump in a crowded legislative session before it becomes law. Greg: “At the last SRC meeting, Eddie spoke for approximately 30 minutes on what was happening in the legislature. I asked him, ‘Are you waiting to see what happens with the legislature before we start planning for the expanded playoffs, and are there other options that we should be considering to eliminate the split?’ He said, ‘I’m confident the legislature will step in.’”

Nevertheless, Bonine asked Representative Talbot to table his bill until the Executive Committee has a chance to discuss the matter at its April 14 meeting. Talbot said that, if the Executive Committee fails to come up with a solution that can be passed by the LHSAA, he could reintroduce the bill later this session.

Greg continues to explore other options. “One consideration is to go back to the proposal that we didn’t even get to at the January meeting because of the vote to split in four more sports - the idea of the higher classes staying together and the lower classes splitting. The 5A schools broke dead even on the expanded split, and some schools, including private schools, didn’t even vote on the proposal. A vote that close indicates to me there might be interest in 5A, 4A, and 3A getting back together if certain schools play up to a higher classification. If several schools in 2A that shall remain nameless would play up, then schools like Many might be open to a playoff system that would support the classification proposal which seems like a much easier solution than the one we had to go through. I’ve had conversations with public school principals who are really concerned about this (the expansion of the split playoffs). They also felt like that momentum was shifting away from that idea but all of a sudden took a real turn.”

Greg considers Norman Booker a friend ever since Norman joined the SRC a year ago. “He’s starting to see the bigger picture. I think he had a number of public

school principals above I-10 counting on him to keep the momentum rolling for a Select and Non-Select playoff system. ‘We got football. Let’s see what else we can get.’ I’ve met with Norman privately about this. ‘Where do you think we can go from here without you feeling that Many High School is at a real disadvantage?’ If the legislature doesn’t come through, I will probably meet with Norman to develop a another proposal to bring back to the SRC.’”

If the legislature does not intervene, Greg, speaking only for himself, favors the option of dividing the LHSAA into public and private divisions. “We would still operate under the general guidelines put out by LHSAA and offer all sports but, for example, we would have separate hardship committees – four private school principals voting on private school hardship cases, four public school principals voting on public school cases. At the annual meeting, the private school principals would vote on items of interest to them, and the public school principals would do the same. Then we’d have a general meeting to consider proposals that affect all of us.”

Alumni met with Thomas Mavor, Ryan Gallagher ’00 and Kenny Spellman ’84 on the campus of UL-Lafayette in March. Young alums filled out a brief survey, shared stories of their college experiences and picked up some alumni items.

Memphis Chapter

Alumni dined at Owen Brennan’s for the “restart” of the Memphis Chapter. Kenny Spellman ’84 updated the group on campus activity and Phase III. The group began planning future chapter events such as Saints parties, a Mardi Gras party and crawfish boils. Brian Barbeito ’98 and Henry Gerosa ’62 SA helped sponsor the event.

San Antonio Chapter

Alumni gathered at River City Seafood & Grill in San Antonio for a Chapter Dinner in late February. Assistant to the President Nick Lagattuta ’71 updated the group on campus activities and discussed the future school plans and chapter events. Dr. Joe Macaluso ’71 sponsored the dinner. There are approximately 120 alumni living in the San Antonio/Austin area.

In MemoriamRoland H. Meyer Jr. ’45 SA passed away on April 8, 2016 at the age of 88. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on June 20, 1927 to Roland H. Meyer, Sr. and Louise Wall Meyer. Roland is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 70 years, Eunice Paton Meyer (Masie), four children: Stanley Meyer, Bishopville, SC, ( Janet), Carmen Meyer, Washington DC (Richard Amdur), Barbara Meyer Jarosz, Belleair Shore, Florida (Edward), Corinne Meyer Driver, Lake Toxaway, NC (Randall). He was a devoted and proud Grandfather to his grandchildren: Kelly Meyer, Stanley Meyer, Jr., Natasha Meyer Buchanan, Denise Meyer, John Jarosz, Charles Jarosz, Kenneth Winterschladen, Rachel Driver Tritt, and Emma Driver. He was predeceased by his sisters, Carmen Meyer Cauthen and Gail Meyer Alverson.

A lifelong Catholic, Roland was an active volunteer at St. Jerome’s in Largo, Florida. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a Knight Grand Cross in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre. Following service in the Navy during WWII and a brief career in his father’s construction business, he had a distinguished career in the packaging industry. Roland LIVED his personal philosophy; “Work hard, Play hard, Sleep fast”. As a 20 year old, he landed a temporary job with Continental Can Corporation in Harvey, Louisiana. What began as a two week stint ended 45 years later with Roland retiring as President, Chief Operating Officer, and Vice Chairman of The American National Can Corporation, the world’s largest packaging and container company. He believed his success was largely due to the education and religious foundation he received from the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Roland never forgot their generosity to him and his family. A lifelong supporter of Brother Martin High School, Roland was named Alumnus of the Year in 2002. Following the devastation of the Gulf Coast by Hurricane Katrina, Roland was the driving force in building a new science and math building for Brother Martin High school. In 2007, the school unveiled the Roland H. and Macy Paton Meyer Science and Mathematics Building. Visitation will be held at Serenity Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 from 5pm to 8pm. The funeral mass will be held at St. Jerome Catholic Church on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 11am. His final resting place will be at the Meyer Family Cemetery in Lake Toxaway, NC. Roland was known for his generosity, charity, and willingness to help those in need and requested that, in lieu of flowers, gifts be made to Brother Martin High School, 4401 Elysian Field Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana 70122.

Brother Warren Laudumiey, S.C. ’36 died at St. Clare Manor Nursing Home in Baton Rouge, November 28, 2015. Ninety-five years old, he was the third of five children born to his parents, Fernand Laudumiey and Stella Anna Oehmichen. He used his baptismal name of Louis until he joined the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, making first vows at Metuchen, N.J., in 1937. Louis first met the Brothers as a student at St. Aloysius in New Orleans where he grew up on Rampart Street, speaking both French and English at home. Throughout his life, he frequently used the expression, "C'est la vie" to comment on life's ups and downs, all of which he took in stride. Brother Warren ministered in the Brothers' schools in six states as well as in Canada and Africa. He taught in Far Rockaway and Brooklyn, N.Y.; Metuchen,

N.J.; Mobile and Daphne, AL; Houma and New Orleans, LA; Muskogee, OK; Bay St. Louis, MS; and Verdun, Canada. He also served five years as a missionary in Okaru in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, Africa. For 12 years from 1976-1984, he held the position of provincial secretary for the New Orleans Province when its headquarters were in Bay St. Louis, MS. Brother Warren was preceded in death by his parents and his four siblings: two brothers Fernand Jr. and Paul Louis Laudumiey; and two sisters Marie Emma Laudumiey Grace and Claire Marie Laudumiey. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. Since Brother Warren donated his body to science, there was no regular wake or funeral services. A Memorial Mass in the Brothers' chapel in Baton Rouge took place Saturday, December 5, at 5:00 p.m. for Brothers and friends. A similar service will take place in New Orleans at a time to be announced later. When his body is returned, his remains will be interred in the Brothers' Cemetery in Bay St. Louis through arrangements with Edmond Fahey Funeral Home there. Memorial donations in honor of Br. Warren may be sent to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Foundation, 4600 Elysian Fields Ave., New Orleans, LA 70122.

Wrestling State ChampionsThe Brother Martin Crusaders captured its fifth consecutive Division I wrestling team title at the 2016 LHSAA State Wrestling Championships at Bossier City’s CenturyLink Center. They finished the tournament with 304.5 points over Catholic league rivals Jesuit (268) and Holy Cross (228.5). Crusaders had seven wrestlers in the finals, with four bringing home state titles. Among the individual state champions were Luke Cotton ’16, the top seed at 106 pounds; defending state champ Steven Shields ’17 (120), Pierce Williams ’16, and Jacob Clapp ’16 (220). On Thursday, February 18th, a school-wide assembly recognizing the 2016 Wrestling

State Championship team was held in the Conlin Gymnasium. Asst. Athletic Director Mark Wisniewski ’81 introduced Head Wrestling Coach Robbie Dauterive ’84 to the Brother Martin community. Coach Dauterive highlighted individual and team accomplishments for the season before awarding starters with medals presented by wrestling alumni. The assembly concluded with a presentation of the state trophy by Principal Greg Rando ’77.

Bowling wins 2nd Consecutive State ChampionshipThe Crusader Bowling Team won their 2nd consecutive State Championship by defeating Vanderbilt Catholic of Houma in the LHSAA State Finals by a score of 17-10. Crusader bowlers knocked off previously undefeated Lafayette High 21-6 in the semifinals. Max Oertling ’12 claimed the gold medal, the highest individual award, after posting a 676 series. Jonathan Fernandez’s 202-190 victory in the 10th frame clinched the title. The team finished the season with a record of 17-0. In three years the Crusaders’ have compile a record of 50-1 under the leadership of Coach Bruce Himbert ’78.

Academics

Crusaders in Mr. Dossaji’s Chemistry classes used the PhET Simulation program to help learn and gain an understanding of how molecules are formed using covalent bonding.

The Behavioral Ecology and Environmental Science Research Team (BEERST) announced their collaboration with the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas to raise

and house the endangered species Zoogoneticus tequila.

Eight students from Brother Martin have earned recognition by the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for their work in creative writing. In addition to seven regional

award recipients, a story written by Sam Lucio ’16 titled “The New Me” has earned a Gold Key Award, meaning it will represent Brother Martin at the national competition.

Vice Principal for Academics Thomas Mavor has accepted a position at St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis. Stanislaus is one of our partners in mission institutions in the United

States Province of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.Thomas will embark on his

new endeavor with the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.Debbie Broussard will serve as the Academic Assistant Principal for the 2016-2017 school year. Chris Biehl will transfer to the Math department assuming Debbie’s responsibilities teaching Advanced Math so that she is free to concentrate on her new role. In addition, Ian Supak will continue in his role as a staff development team member and Junior High Curriculum Coordinator, with his continued focus on observing classes and working with individual teachers to improve instruction and assessment. Ian will be joined by Melanie Williams in the Staff Development Office.

The Brother Martin Cheerleaders placed 4th at the UCA National Cheer Competition in Disney World. Jessica Fresina is head coach and Wesley Smith ’12 serves as assistant.

The Brother Martin Cheerleaders took 1st place in the Large Varsity Co-Ed division in the UCA Dixie Regional Championship in Jackson, MS. This qualified the team for the National Competition at Disney.

Cross-CountryThe Cross-Country Team won four events this past season including the New Orleans Metro Championships. They placed 5th at State.

Niels Dickson ’16 has been named to the Composite and Class All-Academic Teams for Cross Country.

Brother Martin hosted National Signing Day on Wednesday, February 3rd in the Brother Mark Thornton Terrace. Peyton Aucoin ’16, Irv Smith, Jr. ’16, and Andre’ Walker ’16 signed their letters of intent in front of media, coaches, families and friends. Peyton signed his letter to play football at the University of Texas, Irv signed with the University of Alabama and Andre signed to play at Houston Baptist.

SoccerMiles Francis ’16 and Marc Alvendia ’16 were named to the 2016 Boys’ East All-Star Soccer Team and played in the 2016 Boys’ East vs. West All-Star Soccer Game. Both signed their letters of intent to play collegiate. Marc signed his letter to play at Eckerd College in Florida while Miles signed his to play at Barry University in Florida.

Head Coach Stephen McAnespie along with the assistance of coaches, David Wright, Marcello Pigna ’06, and Nico Bereciartua ’11 led the Soccer Team to a 13-5-1 record and they reached the 2nd round of the playoffs. Team Captains were Marc Alvendia ’16 and Miles Francis ’16, the Players’ Player Award went to Marc Alvendia ’16, the Most Valuable Player was Miles Francis ’16 and the Coaches’ Award went to Nick Foster ’16.

Miles Francis ’16 was named to the 2016 Nola.com & Times Picayune All-Metro Soccer team. Miles will play soccer at Barry University in Florida next season.

Senior/Dad Celebration

The Class of 2016 and their dads gathered together for prayer, dinner and fun. From the Dad Senior Photo Contest, to a volleyball tournament, ping pong matches and open-court basketball, there was a lot of energy, camaraderie and sincere happiness throughout the evening.

Application DayBrother Martin welcomed rising 8th and 9th graders to campus on Saturday, January 9th, for the Archdiocesan High School Application Day. In addition to completing all elements of their written application, students also took a placement test.

Feast of the Immaculate Conception

During this season of Advent, the Brother Martin community gathered in celebration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in December. Celebrating this school- wide liturgy was Pastor Tony Rigoli of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church located on Rampart Street in New Orleans.

Senior RetreatAs part of the Brother Martin Senior Retreat experience, students had the opportunity to visit various places of worship. Among those places visited were Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Congregation Beth Israel Jewish Synagogue, and the Islamic Message Foundation.

Lenten Liturgy

The Brother Martin community gathered together for a school-wide Lenten Liturgy celebrated by Fr. Joseph Tregre, who is stationed at St. Joseph’s Church in Galliano, in South Lafourche.

Brenten ’17 and Chandler Dupuy ’17 participated in in this year’s New York City Thanksgiving Day Parade as members of a multi-school marching band, the Macy’s All American Marching Band.

Kehoe-France Band Director, Michael Hotstream ’90, and students from Kehoe-France visited school to observe the Crusader Band preparing for the 2016 Mardi Gras parades.

Best Buddies

The Best Buddies club spent an afternoon at St. Michael Special School. This was the Crusaders first outing and another is scheduled in later in the year.

Chorus

Members of the Crusader Chorus performed their annual Christmas Concert in the James B. Branton Chapel.

NJROTCToy Drive for Children’s HospitalCadets hosted a toy drive benefiting Children’s Hospital this Christmas season.

Trey Andrews ’17, Antonio Domino ’17, and Nader Masoud ’16 participated in the Louisiana Music Educators Association All-State Choir.

The Chorus participated in the 2016 LMEA District Music Performance Assessment at UNO and received the Sweepstakes award for straight superior ratings in concert performance and in sight reading. Kevin Caparotta ’88 directs the Chorus.

Crusaders for Life

Crusaders for Life and four faculty members attended the 17th Annual Proudly Pro-Life Award Dinner at Chateau Country Club in Kenner with the help of a generous donor.

Cyberpatriot Team

The CyberPatriot Team recently completed an exceptional season. The All Service Division team—comprised of students in our NJROTC program—finished 49th in their division in a field

of 328 teams from across the globe. The Open Division team—public, private, and home school teams—was seeded in the Gold Tier and took 3rd Place in their classification of the Regional Round. This team also took 2nd Place at the State Round.

Lacrosse

The Lacrosse Team won the 2016 Allstate Sugar Bowl Lacrosse Classic. The Crusaders defeated the Northshore Spartans 7-2 to claim the tournament championship. The team finished as State Runner-Up.

First Tech Challenge Team

Our FIRST Tech Challenge team competed in the first ever Louisiana State FTC Championship at Woodlawn High School. The state tournament provided a setting to test the team’s robot against robots made by teams from all over the state. Our “Tech Titans” were selected by a panel of judges for the Motivate Award recognizing their ability to demonstrate respect and Gracious Professionalism toward all competitors and for their ability to articulate individual team member’s contributions to the overall success of the team.

Mu Alpha Theta

The Mu Alpha Theta Club placed 2nd in Div. I in the Catholic High Mu Alpha Theta Tournament. The team traveled to Baton Rouge to compete with over 500 students from across Louisiana.

Student Council

Student Council Executive Board members Marvin Hudson ’16, Patrick Newburger ’17, Brandon Hebert ’17 and Joseph Porche’ III ’16 travelled to Alexandria, Louisiana to attend a conference sponsored by the Louisiana Association of Student Councils.

StudentsJoey Michel ’16 and Christian Roche ’16 participated in London’s New Year’s Day Parade as part of the 2015-2016 London Varsity Cheerleading Tour over the Christmas holiday.

Over the Mardi Gras break, Alex Lucas ’16 travelled to New York City to participate in the Carnegie Hall Honors Concert Series.

Kevin Casey ’16 was sworn into the Louisiana Air National Guard by John Wisniewski ’79.

Dylan Walker ’17 participated in the LSU School of Art, in conjunction with the LSU College of Art & Design, 2nd Annual Statewide Juried Art Exhibition.

Brother Martin Scores Above AverageEvery five years, as part of the school accreditation process, AdvancEd, the umbrella organization that works with SACS, sends an external review team to visit our school. Their job is to validate a self-assessment in which the school identifies strengths and areas for improvements in its programs, organizational structure, and resources. In preparation for this visit, Brother Martin began a self-evaluation process starting in the spring of 2015. This included the formation of committees, each centered on rating ourselves by each AdvancEd standard and its accompanying indicators. In addition, electronic surveys were sent to students, teachers, and parents, asking for their opinions on a wide variety of school aspects. An additional survey explicitly focused on the Catholic identity of our school was also given to these three groups of stakeholders. Finally, these committees collected “evidence” of our self-assessment: copies of manuals, meeting minutes, curricula, and so on.When the visiting teams arrived (one team focused on our junior high program, one on our senior high program), they observed over forty classes, met with panels of students, faculty, and parents, and examined the evidence the committees collected. At the end of their visit, they provided their “exit reports,” indicating their findings and making their recommendation for our re-accreditation. They noted the “powerful practices” of our strong school culture linked to the educational charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and to the extensive resource programs available to all students. For “Priorities for Improvement,” they charged us to expand our classroom instructional strategies to allow for more differentiated instruction and asked us to further refine our action plan for the next three years.Finally, we were given scores in three main areas: Teaching and Learning Impact, Leadership Capacity, and Resource Utilization. You can see from the chart below that we scored significantly higher in each category than the national AdvancEd averages. Of particular note is the almost unheard of perfect 400.00 score for our junior high program in resource utilization. Brother Martin will complete a “progress report” in 2018, indicating the progress we have made to the date in the areas that we and the visiting team identified as areas for improvement.
